Episode 748 - Mets Help Out the Yankees

0:00It's the amazing Rico Bronia podcast with your host, Evan Roberts. Welcome in to another edition. A happy edition. We have a few of those recently over Rico Bronia. Hi, I'm Evan Roberts on location because we decided to surprise our kids with a Disney World trip and no Disney World would not keep us from a live Rico after the Met Speed The Tampa Bay Rays 2 out of 3 games. I did notice something very weird while I was at Magic Kingdom on Wednesday afternoon. It's something I noticed. It's something I think jet noticed and that was there were a lot of Medhats. And look, when you're at Disney World, you see the hats and the apparel of like every team and all of sports. But I'm telling you and I'm not just saying this to blow smoke up the Met fans rear ends on a Rico. I probably counted like six or seven Medhats today at Magic Kingdom and maybe a Yankee Hat or a Red Sock Hat.

1:02And it was like, that's weird. We're having a terrible season with a mat. It's like, why? Why? There's so many Medhats at Disney World and it hit me. What a trip. The Mets were in Tampa. So no as pathetic as I am and I've got a story that will define my Met Fan Pathetic ness. I did not go to Tropicana Field. I did not pull off the Tampa Bay Disney Road Trip though. I do commend anyone that did and I'm pretty sure that there are people listening that did do it because the amount of Medhats at Disney World was not a coincidence. It was not the Mets are the happening team. It really had to do with the fact that they weren't playing that far away. I mean, Tampa Bay is not that long of a trip. Now I spent all day at Magic Kingdom from like 7.30am to 8am, the early entry until it closed with fireworks and before we get into this series, I probably topped the scoring the Met Game at an NBA Eastern Conference Finals game.

2:05I think I topped it because I don't know if anyone's ever done this off as a big Disney guy. So maybe he has, they've got this thing with the fireworks where you can have treats in fireworks. I think it's called. I probably know the official name of it. Treats in fireworks as I was called Pete, if you're familiar with it. I know the area that you're talking about, but I've never actually done it before. It's really cool. It's in tomorrow land at Magic Kingdom and you get to watch the fireworks from a deck with a great view and they give you all this cake and cookies and candy. Anyhow, the fireworks at 9.30, they open up the gate at about 8 and me and my wife are like, you know what, especially at the end of the day, if we're all tired, we should get there very early to get the best seat possible and just chill. And so I thought in the back of my mind, this is where I've topped it. I thought in the back of my mind, this is a perfect time to pack the tablets for the kids. They're not going to use it all day. And if we get to this pavilion to hang out and wait for the fireworks, I'll let them

3:09use their tablets, let them watch some videos. Makes sense, good fathering, I guess. And then I think to myself, well, shouldn't I bring my tablet and maybe my scorebook so that instead of watching the meds at 11 o'clock at night or midnight when we get back, maybe while they're chilling, I'll be chilling. And that's exactly what happened. After 11 hours of Disney rides, we get to this pavilion at like 7.30, we chill. I take the book out, start the Med Game on BVR and away we go. So yeah, this season, the 2026 season, which features a lot of losses and a lot of, you know, harbleness. I reach new levels of patheticness. I scored a Med Game at an Eastern Conference Finals, Nix Game. And now I can say I scored a Med Game at Disney World while waiting for fireworks. I didn't finish the game. I got through most of it and I would finish it at a time I showered and got back to our beautiful hotel.

4:09So that was, that was an interesting way to consume a Med Game. And my wife looked at me with loving eyes and said, you know, you don't have to score every Med Game. And I said, but I have a perfect season. It's September. Okay. How can I, how can I have an end? Either way, we'll get into game three. If you missed us talking about game one, that's one episode ago, 747. We did an instant reaction to the meds taking the opener, a really entertaining game against the Tampa Bay Rays that they almost blew and they didn't, and they won the opener. They obviously split these next two games. They win a series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Before we get into the specifics of the game, I honestly think if the meds would have won game two, the way they won game three and lost game three, the way they lost game two, I think more people would have been happy about what just happened. Look, they want a series. That's obviously a good thing. I know some are bothered by the helping of the Yankees aspect. That's really something you can't worry about.

5:09The meds are not in the business of screwing the New York Yankees. They're in the business of, you know, trying to finish this season strong, even if you don't think it matters. But getting shut down by Freddie Peralta, which I'm surprised by. I predicted it on the Rico. I did it on Evan and Tiki and I take my L. I thought they'd hit him. I really did. I thought that they would have success against Freddie Peralta. But if you take getting shut down in game two by Peralta and instead the meds do what they did in game three with all the offense that we saw and then vice versa it with Griffin jacks off the I.L. throwing like a hell of a game. I think that our emotions and feelings towards this series would be completely different. Because it sucked watching Freddie Peralta shove it down their throats. It did. It did on every level because and I said this at the trade deadline and I really believe this. If it turns out that the meds screwed up Freddie Peralta if that's the result and we're not there yet.

6:10The we have signs of it. I certainly listening to the Tampa Bay Ray announcer's go on and on about how basically the meds don't know what they're doing and the rays of fixed them. I don't think we have enough of a sample size to say that that's the case. But if it turns out to be the case if Freddie Peralta is dominating in the postseason and helping the raise win a championship. It's not about bitterness towards Peralta. Peralta means nothing to me and he should mean nothing to you. He was a mercenary that they acquired and he was a disappointment and I don't think he's a bad guy. I don't even think he wilted under the pressure of New York. But if it is truly that the meds got their hands on a guy who had a sub three ERA a year earlier and F the month and let him down this hard road and then he goes to Tampa and while having shaky starts he fixes himself. That makes me feel worse about the future. I don't see any good at that. It's not going to get David Stern's fired.

7:11It's not going to have them blow up the coaching staff again after they did it last year. So what positive would come out of that other than us just questioning even more about this organization. So to watch Freddie do what he did in game two of this series was incredibly frustrating especially with the way the game started. And the game starts with Francisco Lindor who offensively had his moments in this series. He continues to just but funnel defensively. We'll get to that a little bit later on but he has a really good first inning at bat. Hits a home run. Gives him an early lead and you see the meds in that first inning due to Freddie Peralta which it feels like a lot of teams did to him throughout this season. He threw a ton of pitches. He threw 25 pitches in the first thing. The meds had three hits against him and look unfortunately Jared Young and Brett Vady came up with guys on base and couldn't make it worse for Freddie. Could make it a crooked number. But I left that first inning. Not necessarily confident they were going to win the game because who knows what to expect

8:13from Sean Menaya which will focus moron in just a few minutes. But I thought well they're going to get to Freddie. They're going to get to him. This is going to be a typical Freddie Peralta outing. He's going to be already thrown 24 pitches in the first inning. His pitch count is going to be high and this will be good and it will be reminiscent of what we watched this season with such disappointment. And to the credit of Peralta man, he was probably more dominant from the second inning through the sixth when he came out of the game. Then I think at any moment we saw him this season. And what was crazy is that he was efficient. So it wasn't just Peralta's getting guys out and pitching incredibly well what you did. I mean he didn't give up another base hit after he gave up the back-to-back hits to Boa, Bashet and Carson Benz. Never give up another hit. But he was efficient. Which we never saw from him over the course of the season.

9:15So we can rip our guys which is totally fair. It's just what we normally do. We call it the LD offense around here. It's a cleaned up term to describe what happens when the offense goes limp. We could just put it on them. And if it wasn't Freddie Peralta we would. If it was Griffin Jacks we would. Honestly, I wouldn't be sitting here waxing poetic. We'd be crappin' on the offense. But Freddie Peralta looked like the guy that we had hoped they had acquired back in February or January whenever the hell they made that trade. And he dominated. Just going through the offense like Swiss cheese. And this was a full-lotted met offense with Soto back in the lineup. Soto hasn't played every every day but he played in this game. And Freddie Peralta made him look bad. Got him in a week ground out in the first inning. He flyed out in the third inning. And then Kevin Cash did what Kevin Cash does. He took Freddie Peralta out very early.

10:17His pitch count was 76. Through six innings. And was dominating. I was very surprised that he took him out unless they're handling him like a young pitcher and saying let's get him out with his confidence up. He just stuck it to his former team. So that was not fun. And that's probably the cloud that hangs above this series. Yes, the meds won two out of three against record wise the best team in the American league. But they got shut down by Freddie Peralta. And didn't mean the meds have to lose the game. Let's get to the other aspects of what cost them this game. Sean Meniah. Sean Meniah is pitching not like the $25 million man. Not like the guy from 2024 in which we fell in love with him and wanted him to be the opening day pitcher a year later. He's pitching like what his role probably is, which is a swing man.

11:17Now that's an expensive swing man. $25 million a year. But that's the way he's throwing the baseball. He's been very inconsistent after he had that good stretch when he entered the rotation. I feel like every Meniah start turns into this discussion like what is he? I mean, what he is is an overpaid pitcher. That's what he is. He's a guy that you can't rely on. And in this game, he instantly gave back the one nothing lead. When he gave up the lead off double the Yandhi Diaz and the RBI single to junior Kamenero. And then he gave up the lead. When he gave up in one out RBI single to Ryan Valade. But where Meniah deserves a little bit of credit is that Francisco Indor is incredibly shaky defense. It sure stopped continued in that third inning when it should have been an ening-ending ground out by Johnny DeLuca and Lindor just flat out and missed an easy ground ball.

12:17And we've seen that a lot over the last really this this season. He's had a bad defensive season. It isn't just the mental gaps which we'll do an entire Rico about during the off season. He's missing plays he should make. And we are going to have to have this discussion during the offseason about moving him off of the position. I'm sorry. I mean because he never great year last year defensively either. So this isn't it's not a complete anomaly the defense. And I say this almost as a like a compliment as a all right let's calm down especially the Lindor defenders that are going to get like really hot and bothered. They're going to accuse me of hating him and all that. Most guys don't play shortstop their entire career. And if they do Derek Cheater it's probably some selfishness involved. Is the truth. There will come a day over the life of this long-term contract that Lindor signed where he's

13:18just not the best option at shortstop. And unfortunately because of how bad his defense has been this year and there's no there's no arguing that. Like this is one of those cases where I don't need to look at his defensive metrics. I don't because I'm watching him every day as most people are if you're tuning into a Rico bronia in early September with the meds completely buried like you're the die hard right. I think this is more of the die hard Rico bronia at this point. I mean a lot of people have checked out which understand respect it. He's just been bad defensively. And I'd love to give you an answer. I'd love to explain it. I can't explain it. I'm sure if he could he'd love to too. But Manaya got out of it because that miscube by Lindor and the third inning of a two to one game could have made a two to one game five to one very very easily. And instead show him and I got Jorge Matayo to fly out. Same thing in the fourth inning got

14:19himself in a trouble and he got Yandhi Diaz to hit one deep to the warning track and left field that Nick Mordor Bito was able to make the play on. Who got the start was good to see Nick Mordor Bito in lineup. It's almost as if Andy Green was listening to the Rico when he formed the lineup in game two of this series. I had mentioned I think it was after game one. What I want to see over the final month and it included bit. Let's see Nick Mordor Bito. 15:22But it really all came crashing down for show Manaya in the sixth inning of this game and that again is a very kind of familiar tone of Manaya starts. It's a two to one game in the bottom of the sixth inning. We know the meds couldn't hit Freddie Peralta which I discussed and Manaya through five. Feel like I've said this a lot. It wasn't great but he kept the team in the game. He had allowed seven bass hits at that point. He had walked one so plenty of bass runners against him but he was able to make that big pitch and it all comes crushing down in the sixth inning against the bottom of the order and it was ugly. Bass hit the Chandler Simpson, RBI doubled a Nick Fortes, Sack Fly to Taylor Walls, home run the Yondi Diaz. It was just it came crashing down. I guess an argument could be made that Andy could have gone to the bullpen earlier but I don't know man his pitch count was low and I don't like to bring up that he makes $25 million a year but

16:26he makes $25 million a year. Can you get through the sixth inning? The close of Manaya's outing allowing the three runs in that sixth inning, the RBI double, the Sack Fly, the Homer, it runs his start. Five and two thirds innings, 11 hits, five runs is a crappy start. It is what it is. He kept them in the game until he collapsed. But the more you watch, Shamanaya, the more you realize A is untradable and B, just because a guy's overpaid doesn't mean he can't be on the team, doesn't mean you should just write a check to get rid of him. Use the player in the best way that they could help you and he has pitched like a swing man. He has pitched like Trevor Williams. He's, remember Trevor Williams? He's pitched like that kind of guy. A guy who can make a couple of starts and a guy who, if all things are going well, could be in the bullpen. Dylan Ross made his

17:28major league debut and look great. Dylan had a very bad year in the minor leagues. He's pitched better recently. Very disappointing because Ross was on all our radars for the last couple of years. Remember he was called up last year and never pitched during that final stretch of the season. So he's one of those names that you almost forgot about because of his struggles in the minor leagues. He came in, he was throwing hard, he was throwing strikes and he pitched a one, two, three in it. And you know what he got for that? I don't know if you guys realize this. He got sent down. That's his, thank you Dylan. Now go back to the minor leagues because we need just an hankin mint to come up so that we can give all our starters an extra day. So Dylan will see in two weeks or maybe not. Maybe we don't see you again. Remember these roster expansions. It's not 40 like it used to be. It's only one spot. So there's certainly no guarantee we're going to see Dylan Ross again. Jeffrey Jan was mediocre and he had

18:30that weird moment in the eighth inning when he had a chance to get through the inning and Ryan Velade hit that little ground ball back to the mound and Jan, I guess because his momentum was taking him to home plate. His immediate reaction was to throw home. Alvarez was surprised by it. It was a tag play and he didn't get the lead runner. Gives the raise and insurance run. He probably had time to throw to first base. A decision that if Jan makes differently, he gets through that inning and instead of the meds losing six to two, they lose five to two. I want to get back to the offense because I'm glad Wansoto's back. I got to do this though. I'm thrilled he's back the meds are a better team when Wansoto's in the lineup. Blah blah blah blah blah. It is amazing. How big moments find him and he comes up small like eight out of nine times. At least that's the

19:32way it feels. Big moments are tough to define. I don't even think there's necessarily a stat that's perfect to define that. I don't must have to go back on every Rico and find those Wansoto big moments but they're trailing five to two. You see that I guess it was Garrett Clevanger loses the strike zone. Tyler Wells comes into the game and after Lindor draws this really impressive walk that made it five to two because Freddie Peralta's added a game. Here comes Soto tying run on first. He's the lead run a chance for a moment. Now what is that moment when you're coming into a game 14 games under 500? It's it's forgettable. I admit that it maybe makes Meds Yearbook or the Rico Bronya offseason great victories but it was reminiscent of all the other big moments that finds Wansoto and instead of him hitting this majestic grand slam that changes again completely that felt

20:37dead. Wansoto pops up the third base and it kind of felt the way it's felt a lot over this two year period with Wansoto. He's a great hitter. The numbers do not lie but man these big moments they find him and he tends to come up small and once he popped up in a five to two game in the seventh ending with the bases loaded in two outs you could just you could feel it through the TV the game was over and the offense went down so meekly against Tyler Wells and eventually Kevin Kelly six up six down Soto at his moment and he missed it and the meds lose a very forgettable game six to two. This is from Adam from Florida who writes I'm at the race game in St. Petersburg watching the meds play and it's the bottom of the eighth inning hoping for a comeback

21:40but the meds didn't take advantage of a big opportunity. I know that Wansoto is coming back from injury and not fully recovered but I was hoping that Soto would hit a grand slam instead of popping up that was the turning point of the game also Peral that a quote quality star besides giving up the lead off from run to lendoor disappointed that the meds couldn't knock about in the first inning very disappointing Adam I'm sorry you had to see that live. John from Fresno writes it figures Freddie Peral this shuts down the mess after the lendoor lead off dinger Soto let another meds moment get away with an infield pop up. Manaya either needs to go to the pen or just stop pitching after five he has no place on this team next year as a starter. You could go back to that strategy of you got me five as good as you look I need to get you out because I know things are going to go bad. Fred writes it wasn't the worst loss of the year but it was definitely the most frustrating. Not that beating up Peral would have salvaged this miserable season but it would have felt satisfying. Instead we get six innings three hits all in the first

22:44one run no walks seven strikeouts on 74 pitches 74 that's usually a solid three inning effort for fastball Freddie. I got to think about that Fred does that loss game two of this series in a law season in a series that you won against the best team in the American league. Does that qualify as one of the worst losses of the year because it came to Freddie Peralda? I'm going to write it down on my little worst loss of the season list and I think we'll reevaluate it come December when we do a worst loss of the season Rico Bronya and see how we feel about it. I don't know I I could see the emotions of that game being like like really we face Freddie Peralda did we? I don't seem to remember that and maybe you didn't remember that because you had a good time and there's lots of ways to have good times you can watch fireworks at Disney

23:48or you can knock one out of the park and raise the apple with Takarachi High. It's a sparkling cocktail that blends real show two spirits with the delicious flavors of fruits locally grown in Japan available at city field and Fuji apple of course that's my favorite white peach and lemon. The finale of this series gained three against the Tampa Bay Rays feature Justin Hagenman. I understand the idea of being careful with Christian Scott specifically Christian Scott more so than Zach Fowett more so than Nolan McLean who I want to see continue to pitch but Christian is coming off of Tommy John's surgery. So you do have off days which the meds have on Thursday between the Tampa series and then coming back to city to take them on the lousy San Francisco giants. It's just frustrating when you're going to insert a starter to give Scott the extra day

24:49that the starter is Justin Hagenman. Bizarro Pete Hoffman making a start in September in a law season in which we are just evaluating all young players we can find. It's it's just something you don't want to watch like Wednesday's game and as I'm starting it at Walt Disney World and I'm seeing Justin Hagenman it's like come on. I know it wasn't Jonah Tongue's day but Jonah Tongue needs to be up here. How about you just go with a six man rotation? That's what you do if you're so in love with Robert Stock who was great in game one of the series I don't mean to knock them then give Scott his extra day give everybody an extra day and call up Tongue and put them in the rotation. Justin Hagenman making a start and he looked good for the first two and two thirds innings. He was great. I mean he came he retired the first day guys. I have a hell could I rip him and then he started to lose in a little bit but there's no redeeming qualities

25:55for us as fans to seeing Justin Hagenman. So you had Justin Hagenman against Griffin Jax the lineup was interesting. Brett Bady was playing left field which I don't mind because Bady needs to continue to play outfield. I have a level of confidence in Bady's athleticism not as offense but as athleticism that if you put him in a position enough he'll become good at it he's become a good third baseman he's become a good second baseman and he even made a great catch in this game. He made a couple of really good defense in place we got a hand at the Brett Bady third a second inning Chandler Simpson in a fly ball to left field he made a nice running catch and then in the fifth inning of this game this is before Nick Moore Bito made the catch will remember more a few weeks later. Brett Bady made like an unbelievable play. It was a line drive off the bat of Jonathan Oranda and Bady went back let up or leaped up whatever the grammar is and made this awesome play. He is growing as a left fielder and don't take that as I even loves

27:00Brett Bady. No no no he can't hit okay his offense sucks. I know that I acknowledge that though we did have a three run double in this game but I'm not getting lost by the big moment that Bady had. I'm just he is a great athlete and he is showing us that at least defensively you put him somewhere long enough he can become decent. They never put him at first base long enough for him to develop at that position but we've seen it at third we've seen it at second I think we've seen it a little bit now in left field but the Justin Hagenman starch has felt like a waste of time. Chris DeVensky was terrible when he came into the game the good news was the metal offense was great. The metal offense exploded a little bit go back to the first inning of this game. They did take advantage of the the I think they ended up calling it an error on Liam Hicks but it was the throw home that should have nailed Boba Shett Victor Mesa Jr. made a really

28:05good throw that was going to nail Boba Shett at the plate on the Jared Young base hit in the first inning but the ball bounced but still a good throw and Liam Hicks not the greatest defensive catcher just missed it and so not only does Bo's score but it allows Carson Bench who was on base to round third and score as well but great job by Jared Young that should not be forgotten that Jared Young continues to get clutch at RBI single against Griff and Jacks Marcus Simeon ripped an RBI double and then obviously the big play in this game was the Brett Beaty bases clearing double with two outs which I think is going to make him a candidate for the on the man right now award which is going to be very tough to hand out we'll get to that in just a little bit but we saw the offense a couple of big innings against Griff and Jacks to knock him out of the game in the third inning and then Nick Moore Bito and this really did turn in to Nick Moore Bito game and he didn't start this game this game was started by Brett Beaty and left field who got pinch

29:10with Mark Vientos once there was a lefty on the mound came Bo's or was on the mound so Andy Green responds hey thank him Brett but we're going to go to Mark Vientos and after Vientos singles that's when Moore Bito comes in he came in as a pinch runner and then stays in makes a play of the year catch against Victor Mesa Jr. in the eighth inning and of course hits his first majorly kid his first majorly Garbi I he got a bases clearing double so the eighth spot in the batting order featured two bases clearing doubles six of the ten runs were driven in by the guy playing left field and batting eighth but great to see from Nick Moore Bito Nick came up here earlier this season if you recall and had that horrible miscue in the Washington game where Nolan McClean was given a big lead and then imploded and he was partially imploding because of that play by Nick

30:11Moore Bito and it wasn't fair because Moore Bito is a really good defender who just didn't make a play and it turned into a significant play maybe one of the more significant defensive plays of this season when you look at where we were in the year and that kind of win turning into that kind of loss but he also hadn't had a lot had a lot of offensive opportunities this is the time of year for him to get those chances and at least on Wednesday against the raise in game three of this series he took advantage of it he took advantage of it defensively he took advantage of it with the bases clearing double really great effort by Nick Moore Bito wants Soto hit a solo home run with the match up by a lot that's far for the course I guess but a great effort by the bullpen dead nil nunez has been different since he's come off the iL when he first came off the iL I also didn't love the way Andy was using him he was using him for multiple innings he did use him to get the last out of the fourth

31:14inning with a man on base and then get three outs in the fifth inning so he did ask him to get more than three outs neat lavender again got five outs and was outstanding and a very important bounce back adding of Daniel Duarte whose last two performances were lousy he came in against junior commonero in the seventh inning fell behind three at all worked it back to three and to battle him and eventually struck him out so a really good effort outside of the vanski was sucked a really good effort by the met bullpen by the new look met bullpen it's been a month but it still feels new look but when de vanski was imploding I thought about this briefly like if the mets lose this game because they did have a six to one the six nothingly to became six to four it felt that when haganman gave up the one run and de vanski gave up the three and it became a six to four game in the fifth inning it did feel worth four thing felt like you're going to lose this game

32:16and I kept telling myself why should we care if they lose a game that is basically run by christ de vanski and just that haganman and luckily it was dead nail noon yes who could be a big part of the bullpen next year neat lavender who could be a big part of the bullpen next year daniel do our day who's making an effort to be a big part of this bullpen was those guys who really pitched well to hold the fort and have the mets win this game so really good effort by all of them it's is an aberration the way the met bullpen is pitched for a month it's enough of a sample size with so many different guys that just complimented and it's certainly making you think about what the options are for next year in terms of who are these guys or which of these guys are really pitching their way into roles next year and eight lavender is daniel do art day is dead nail noon yeses and it

33:18doesn't mean that david stern should sit on his hands in terms of building a bullpen next year but he's got more pieces than maybe we thought let me read some of your emails about game three the rico bgmail.com Joe writes one soda should never go back to left field young guy showing too much plus fielding even baby tonight put him in permanent first base or dh and save his legs Joe I think for this season you're right for 2026 why not just have him dh the rest of the way it allows you to chance to evaluate nick more bto the mets are going to need to add a bat this is my first like for ray into the off season again and I said this last year I'll say it again they didn't score enough runs they didn't you want to diagnose the 2026 mats there's a lot wrong with them absolutely Freddie Peralta being horrible was one of it they didn't score enough runs so you could just run it back and say yeah you know what the young guys the young guys

41:57Kodai Senga got a save in a close game but the two guys that jump out of any more than Kodai would actually be Nate Lavender and dead nail Nunez dead nail Nunez pitches in inning and a third scoreless baseball four up four down comes into the fourth inning when Davensky creates the mess and gets Yandhi Diaz to fly out and if you go back to the opener of this series dead nail Nunez comes in in the seventh inning right after the meds take the engage their lead from one nothing to three nothing and he pitches a one two three inning so seven outs from dead nail Nunez in the two wins Nate Lavender well Nate Lavender comes in in the sixth inning and gets two outs one of which was a base hit with an outfield assist by Christopher Moral but nevertheless Nate Lavender comes in faces two batters with a one nothing lead gets two outs Lavender comes in in the sixth inning of the finale of this series works past an infield hit gets two more outs in the seventh inning so he
