今天這句俗諺 「天頂天公，地下母舅公 」(Thinn-tíng Thinn-kong, tē-ē bú-kū-kong. )是什麼意思呢？
以早咱講神明，天公是上大的，人間是母舅上大，甚至有人滾耍笑，「母舅了聯無了錢」，頂下聯(母舅聯)，嫁娶的時陣，咱愛結綵，母舅會包紅包，毋過這个時陣，紅包橐仔會當提，錢愛退，所以講：「母舅了聯無了錢」，甚至母舅愛坐大位，有時閣會講：「母舅公較大三界公」。

在傳統習俗婚嫁喜事時，如果有舅舅出席的場合，通常會請他坐大位。傳統倫理上很尊重母舅，其實某程度上也反映出早期重男輕女社會所產生的觀念，為了保護家中女性，舅舅若有地位有威儀，嫁出去的姊妹也因為娘家尚有平輩的男性撐腰，而比較不容易被婆家欺負。
