The Washington Wizards are the subject of today's show. We talk with Ben Strober about Anthony Davis, Trey Young, AJ DeBanza, and so much more.

You're listening to the latest edition of Lockdown Caves where on today's show, I'm joined by Ben Strober of Lockdown Wizards because the early Eastern Conference of Point of Preview series, which I told you guys, I think there are 11 teams in the Eastern Conference that believe they can make the postseason some way, shape or form. Some of those teams could be winning the Eastern, winning the championship, other teams it could be just, hey, happy to be here. 2:05Now just from lyrics. Between 2010 to 2017, the Washington Wizards certainly fall into that ladder category because I do think that the Wizards are a team that believes they can be in the plan, maybe the bottom of the playoffs. Ben Strober thinks the same. This is a wizard's team that is not going to be the pushover they have been. look like there's a lot to break down. There's a lot that I've into and how these two teams compare. I think the calves should still be considerably better than the Wizards. But Washington is a team that calves might need to keep an eye on because they might not be a great team this year, but they could be pretty good. We'll talk about it right now with Ben Schrober. And joining me now is a guy wearing number five in Solidarity with Jane Daniels. And that would be Ben Schrober from Lockdown Wizards. The Washington Wizards been where the last team to make this cut in the early preview series of opponents. I think that the Wizards maybe have some postseason expectations. I don't know that they're going to be top six team in the East, but I definitely see a world where they could be a top 10 team in the East and find themselves in a play in spot. And we will

3:05talk about that coming up in a little bit. But I just kind of want to begin here with what's up with the Wizards? How would you describe what their off seasons been like? Well, first of all, Danny, I just want to say I'm honored that the Wizards were included on this list. It feels like I finally got invited to the kids birthday party. And you know, now the Wizards are part of the cool kids club, even though it's just top 10, but you know, it's good to see some recognition. But it's been an interesting offseason to say the least we expected that a deal would get done with Trayong. He ended up opting out of the final year of the player option, which was expected. Did we expect the deal to be four years, two or 12 million? Probably not based on a lot of the reporting that existed beforehand, not really sure where that came from. But it turned out to be a max contract for Trayong. And there was a lot of the sticker shock effect initially when you saw that number. But when you think about where the Wizards are at financially, not really having to pay any of their young players for still a couple of more seasons, it's not truly the most backbreaking contract that a lot of people made it out to be initially. But

4:08then the attention shifted to what would happen with Anthony Davis, who was eligible to sign a four year 275 million dollar contract and you go, OK, that would that would not be a good decision whatsoever. But thankfully, the report came out pretty quickly that the Wizards and Davis wouldn't have substantial conversations regarding an extension until at least the regular season, which made all the sense of the world is only played 71 games across his last two seasons. So they'll get to see what that fit looks like early on in the season with Davis playing with Trayong number one overall pick in AJ DeBots, who of course was the dominant headline after the draft in June. But a lot of intriguing storyline still an open roster spot as it stands right now, they tried to sign Russell Westbrook that didn't happen. They've been linked to potentially being interested into Marga DeRosen. But we can get all into what I think they might do with that roster spot if they even bother filling it at this point. It's been a fun off season. And I think there's a good amount of optimism about what 2026 will bring as a stepping stone year for the Wizards. So there's a bunch there that I want to follow up on and you brought up Trayy brought up the contract

5:10extension, you brought up the number one overall pick in AJ Bansa. And I'm curious if you think that those two things are linked at all. Kind of before we get into each of those guys and what we expect from them this upcoming season, do you think that maybe the narrative around Trayy's contract extension would be a little bit different if the Wizards didn't have lottery luck. If they're bright future, maybe wasn't as bright because let's say they would have landed the number five overall selection in the draft as opposed to number one overall, do you think that changes the way that Trayy's contract extension gets looked that probably because it seemed like acquiring Trayy young in Anthony Davis. I understand that Trayy was part of their plan because they felt they needed a floor general on this roster, but it also served as a pretty viable backup plan in order to maybe grow your roster a little bit and improve your win total of things went south in the lottery, which was possible. There was nearly a 50% chance that we're going to end up with a fifth pick and no disrespect to Keaton Wogler. He's not the same prospect is AJ DeBonso would completely change maybe the outlook for the

6:12Wizards over the next couple of seasons here. Anthony Davis kind of seemed like found money. They just saw an opportunity to buy really well. Still a little bit unsure of what the plan is going to be for that. Maybe they do end up moving them at the deadline if they keep him healthy and he plays well, depending on how interested he is in being here without a contract extension. But that'll be a storyline to follow in the regular season. I think they always had their eyes on Trayy young Michael Wenger, the president of monumental basketball said as much multiple occasions that young was going to be their number one free agent on the board. So they're clearly was interested. They have the connection with Travis Schlenk who drafted Trayy young back in 2018 now part of their front office is one of their leads scouting guys. So it always seemed like something that was going to be on their radar. At some point in time. And of course, they got lucky enough to land a player like DeBonso. But they did say early on the reporting before the draft that acquiring Trayy young did not impede them from potentially taking Darren Peterson. So if they landed the number two pick and whoever else was picking one

7:15took DeBonso. I think Peterson still could have been a wizard boozard still could have been a wizard. I don't think any of these things would have impacted what they done draft night. Do you think even though they landed number one, do you think that there was discussion about maybe taking Darren Peterson or can Boozard number one overall instead of AJ DeBonso? I think Peterson was in play. I do believe there were some some discussions about that. I know they brought him in and they had publicly announced that it was down to those two. I'm sure Boozard was in plenty of consideration as well given what he is as a prospect. But at the end of the day, the way that Will Dawkins, the general manager has talked about what they envisioned for DeBonso. And just that the local ties as well DeBonso from Brockton, Massachusetts, Will Dawkins grew up in the Boston area as well. He's known about the DeBonso family and in this kid for a very long time. They've had close connections with him and his family. So it seemed like that was always going to be the play. And I don't know at the end of the day how close this race

8:16truly was. But I think from a talent perspective, it absolutely was a very, very close race. I think DeBonso on paper seemed maybe just a little bit safer of a pick at the end of the day. When you're picking first overall and you need it to change your franchise, that makes the most sense to me. That's why I was in the camp of DeBonso over Peterson. But I'm sure the other two were plenty in consideration. They did their due diligence on this. So after the Wizards acquired tray before the trade deadline, I believe that one was that acquisition was in January, obviously. Anthony Davis was closer to the trade deadline. I'm not exactly sure what day it was done, but it was closer to the trade deadline. Those two combined play five games for the Wizards and all five of those games were played by Troy Young. So because of that, I am curious, what are your expectations for that duo on the court together for the first time wearing a Wizard's uniform? Like, what do you think we're going to see out of them this season? It's interesting because I'm trying to quantify what I think

9:18the match up or the duo of Alex Sarr, anything Davis will look like because the Wizards never ran double big lineups whatsoever last year. It's just not something they did because they wanted to be bad enough defensively. They didn't want to rebound well enough because they wanted to lose plenty of games. So it's going to be interesting because Davis is not really like what I know what it's it's insane. But you know, no, no more of that. That's that's not what we're talking about on this channel anymore. But Davis has this gotten worse as a three point shooter pretty much every single year of his career. The last couple of years of the injury stuff is probably a big reason why is this hasn't been able to stay on the floor. So I wonder if they're going to be stretching the floor out with Sarr a little bit. But to go back to your point with Trey young a lot of the off season dialogue has been about the usage that they'd see from him because he's typically been one of the highest usage players in the NBA. I think he's been the highest usage player in the league at least two years of his career. And then you bring in DeBonza, who's a high usage player was an extremely high usage

10:18player in college. What would that look like? But we saw in just a very small sample size five games. As you mentioned before, Trey young had a higher assist percentage, but a lower usage rate. So they're working on him being a little bit more efficient in his touches, truly trying to set people up in play make. So you'd hope you could see some of that stuff, whether you're working out of a pick and roll with Davis or just having him download roaming on the dunker spot. We've seen some of the footage in the offseason here of Davis working on the mid-range shot that he's been pretty good with throughout his career. I think the duo is good and they can make each other work better because obviously Davis is going to help anchor the low post. And when you have Trey young on the floor, defensively, that's one big deficiency you have right there. So you need all to help you can get in the painted area and saw in Davis anchoring that can be very, very helpful for the perimeter that might struggle with him out there. I don't know that there's going to be a ton of push back there when you have the number one overall pick. What did you think of debances performance at summer league? And really just, what are you expecting to see from him as a rookie this year? Given the fact that he didn't shoot well from the outside at all, one for 11 in the summer league and I think in his first summer league game that he played against you taught two for 13 on shots outside of the paint, he still looked the part and he was as advertised because he was this prolific rim scoring player eight

13:23of nine on his looks at the rim in the summer league. He's going to get downhill with the best of them who get to the free throw line a ton like and I mean a ton. Then he shot 15 free throws in the summer league, but they were doing like the two for one thing to speed up the process. So it would have been closer to 25 to 30 free throws if they're playing in a normal setting and maybe that's going to make people annoyed at him like kind of the way that the same way it is with Shay Gilders Alexander, we'll have to see how that goes, but I was very, very impressed with his intensity that he played with, especially on the defensive side of the ball because for a guy at six foot nine and a half, he generated virtually no stocks in his freshman season at BYU. And I think he had eight in the two games that he played in the summer league. He had really good activity on that end of the floor, which is encouraging to see in the offensive stuff. If he can get the jump down, he's going to be one of the better offensive players, I think a couple years into his career. So everyone is very excited about the development they're going to see from him. And what kind of impact can he have as a rookie? Because I think he'll be a pretty impactful player day one.

14:25I know that there's there's never really a perfect comp for guys, right? Like everybody is themselves, right? Like Ajita Bans is not another player. He's Ajita Bans, but I am going to ask you if you have like a favorite comp of a guy that isn't established talent in the NBA that you think like if Ajita Bans's career becomes blank, it's a success. That's that's a great question. And it's hard to quantify this because like you could easily just start naming all NBA MVP level players, but like it is that would not be totally unfair considering he was the number one overall pick and what everybody wants to call an incredible draft, right? Like it that's not an unfair thing to do to put him. I'm not saying that you should say, yeah, if this guy is a little brawn, it's a success. But I think that like putting him with all NBA players is not an unfair expectations for his career for his rookie or sure not his career though. His favorite player, he's mentioned this so many times and I almost see it a little bit like a hybrid of it that he's not

15:27quite the same player. He's not as good as a shooter. But the Kevin Durant cop like is very interesting to me because like they are these tall slender dudes that can handle the ball. They love to operate out of the mid range, can knock down that that shot with the best of them. Katie obviously is one of the best scores ever. So that is a big time shoes to fill when it comes down to it. But I kind of like that one. I see the Jalen Brown one a little bit. I've heard the Jason Tatum ones at the end of the day, like those don't really matter a whole lot because there are different skill sets for all these players that will set them apart one way or another. But if he ends up having a career like any of those players, that's that's a very, very good career. The Wizards I think would be in business for many, many years to come. How do you think debancet changes the way that the Wizards will build the roster out in the future? Because no rosters ever a finished product really. And I do think that getting that number one overall pick maybe makes you change the way that you look at the future. Absolutely. And the one thing that is reassuring to hear and based on people I've talked to

16:27in the organization, I understand that this is the plan is they're going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that AJ Devonza becomes their number one player, their franchise cornerstone player. And they want to build this roster catered around him. So whether or not that takes a year or two years and other three years to mold into form, that's kind of like the timeline you're looking at here because they see debonza as the guy that they've been missing throughout the entirety of this rebuild because they found buildable pieces in the draft over the years. Keeshaan George, Alex Sartre, Tray Johnson, the year ago, Blokkool Bolly, who they really like as a defensive guy at this point in time in his career, but they were still lacking that number one player face the franchise player, which you arguably need to be within contention of winning in the title in the NBA right now. I'm sure you know that firsthand you've seen it over the years here in Cleveland. But the wizards feel like they have that guy. So they're going to build the roster around him. They're going to do a lot of evaluating this season. Obviously, the expectation is to be much better,

17:28because of who you have on the roster and Tray young and Anthony Davis, but they're still very much, I believe, going to be in evaluation mode, seeing who is really best suited to stick around long term around debonza. Maybe they consolidate in some point in time in the next off season, thinking they need this role. They need this type of player on the team instead of somebody else they have at this time. That's what I find fascinating about this upcoming season. Along those lines, who do you think the wizards consider to be their young core of players? Like obviously, it abances part of it. I trade young in Anthony Davis are part of the core. I think they're certainly not young. I would not characterize them as that. But like, who do you think that the wizards value as part of the core? Obviously, Alex are in Kishon George, be the top two names, I would say that that is absolutely their established young core players. The way they talk about these guys, the vision they have for both of these players as well. I think they have the highest belief in those two players. Then you got if you want

18:30to get into the weeds a little bit and say like, who's taking that third spot? Could it be trade Johnson? It's a very dependent on where they're going to find minutes for all these players. Blockhole, Bolly as well, who could end up being their starting to guard because they feel like they need his defense out of the perimeter next to tray young like that could be a possibility. If he can shoot the ball better, then maybe he sticks around the lineup a lot longer. They have a very crowded group of young players on this team. I think they've drafted players and the seven they've drafted seven players in the first round over the last three years. So it's not going to be like everybody can make it out on the other side. And well, Dawkins has said as much, not not everyone is going to make it to the other side of the rebuild and in competing. But I would have to say, so are George are probably the two safest players. Balls up for a contract extension. I'm interested to see if they get that done on a relatively team friendly deal to see what that potentially looks like that probably gets done before the regular season at some point that's typically when this group has got those type of deals done. But then what also they

19:30envision for trade Johnson, Bob Carrington, Will Riley, who had an impressive second half of the season after they drafted him in the first round last year as well. There's a lot of different options, but so are in Georgia, the two that I look at right now and say like, those are their guys. What are the expectations for those two this year? Like, where do you expect them to both grow as basketball players? I think Saur is going to have a really, really good year. And a lot of people probably wouldn't have noticed it because of the situation. He was put into but Alex or had a really, really strong second season in the NBA, a massive leap, completely transforming the way he was in terms of his physicality playing down low, living a little bit more at the rim, changing up his shot diet to feature a lot more shots, right? At the rim, you saw better efficiency from Alex Arden, of course, the block stuff. He was very, very good at defending the rim despite defending more shots, right at the rim than anybody in the entire NBA by a massively large margin. And that's because they were willing to put him on an island down there by himself with virtually no

20:34help all the time. That that was just the type of situation they're playing. But now that you do have Anthony Davis on the floor, if he is healthy and depending on how long he is playing, here in DC, that is going to be a massive weight off the shoulders of Alex. So I think that helps him out of time. He shot George just grew in basically every department as a player. He kind of became their de facto point guard at one point just because they didn't really have anybody to run the offense. But caring to net struggled a little bit within that role. So George got better as a ball handler, you saw him improve the way he was able to operate himself offensively attacking, getting downhill, facilitating the one thing I think that he needs to work on the most is defending without fouling because he is a capable defender and he's aggressive. He's willing to do it. But he would defend, he would foul too much and get himself into trouble. So if that's an area that he can clean up, I think he could also could have a really big year. But overall, like those two players both grew the most, I'd say in their second season, which is why I would pinpoint them as the two guys.

And this is a question that I've been asking of every other person that I've had on locked on calves throughout this series. But it's a simple one. It's one that you can kind of take wherever you want to go, because I don't know if there's like a way to quantify it. But how would you been defined success for the Washington Wizards in the

23:392026, 2027 season? The continued development of their young core of players and then also a relatively substantial improved win total. And I know the expectations are kind of like hit or miss. There are some wizards fans out there that are convinced that this team can win 50 games. My guys team is in 150 games in 47 years. Like you didn't stain by the way. Like that is it. It's insane stat and streak. Like that's nuts. The calves have won 50 games. I can't even tell you how many times they've won 50 games in my lifetime. That's nuts. Yet yet yet to do it in mind. So for the Wizards. So I'm like, guys, you haven't even seen a 50 win season. So let's let's take a big step forward first before that. But I think the play is within reach, whether or not that leaves you within the range of somewhere right around 500. If you can win anywhere from 39 to 42 games, that would be a very, very good season for them, considering that they won 17 last year, albeit kind of manufactured

24:40obviously because of what they were doing. But still, let's say they didn't can't as much as they did. And they won, I don't know, 25 games that they wouldn't have won 30 games or anything like that. They still were very, very behind as roster. Okay, if you go from 25 to 40 wins of a 15 win total increase is a very, very strong step forward. So that's kind of what I'm envisioning for this team going forward. It's going to be a big step forward, I believe in some way. And least like that is what dictates a successful season to me that you see guys like Saur and George take another step forward. Dabatsa have a strong rookie season leaving you with the confidence that he is built a foundation that you can trust this guy to be who you're building around going forward. And then you see what happens obviously with Tre Young, if he shows that he is still worthy of the hefty price tag that you put on him, 53 million dollars annually, if he can live up to some of that money that he's going to be getting paid right there and he can distribute and elevate the roster around him, then you'd be looking pretty strongly forward toward 2027.

25:43And hopefully seeing them take another step and maybe expand the roster a little bit in a way that feels like gets them more in a competitive spot. All right, I lied. I have one more and this is because you brought it up. So the last time the Wizards won 50 games was 78 79 season. They were not called the Wizards. They were the Washington Bullets. They were in their fifth season of being called the Washington Bullets. That's how long ago this was they ended up losing the finals that year after they did win the finals year before just by only going 44 and 38. When is the next time that Washington's basketball franchise will win 50 games in a season? 50 games in a season. I think if they have a really strong 2026 here and they get to the postseason and win somewhere around 39 to 42 games, I think within the next two years after that is when you should be thinking about this team potentially winning 50 games. Hopefully you're in the third year of AJ DeBots and he has truly rounded himself into one of the better offensive players in the league as a 22 23 year old, whatever he'll be at that time.

26:46That's when you should be aspiring for something like that because the Eastern Conference is getting stronger every single year. And that's the one thing that gives me a little bit of pause of what the win total could be this year. It seems like almost everybody in the Eastern Conference has gotten better in some way right at the same time as the Wizards have done it. So you got to find a way to surpass some of those teams. It's it's not going to be a cake walk like maybe like if they were doing this last year with tray young and Anthony Davis, I'd have a lot more confidence that they be winning closer to 45 games because you're like a third of the league purposely losing every single game. That's obviously not going to be the cases here. So it's going to be a lot more competitive and I expect that to continue for the next couple of years as well. And that is the reason why this series is so long because there are a lot of teams in the Eastern Conference that I think have postseason aspirations of some sort. For the Wizards, it's probably make it to the play in and see what happens.
