2:07Magic daily stops by. We talked about everything that has happened with the magic this off season. They fired mom mostly, higher Sean Swini. They're going to hope that Franz Wagner can be healthy this year. Hope that Paulo Bencaro can be healthy this year. These two teams just a couple of years ago. On the first round, Caves of Magic went seven games. And since then the magic is still not yet won a postseason series with that young core. The Cavs have had a 64 win season and went to the conference finals this past season. So two teams that have gone in different directions, but could potentially be in a similar place at the end of the season, depending on how things go. So without anything else from me, here's my conversation with Philip Rossmann Reich. We are back with the early opponent previews for your Cleveland Cavaliers. And on today's show, we are talking Orlando Magic basketball with Philip Rossmann Reich from Lockdown Magic. And I know that the Orlando Magic didn't maybe have the most exciting off season in the world. The off season is still going on. They could still maybe do something exciting, although I don't necessarily know if you were I see that in their futures.

3:09So Philip, we'll just start right here before we get into the coaching change, before we get into all of these other questions that I have written down to ask you just, how do you describe what this off season has been like for the Orlando Magic? Oh, man. A lot of blind faith. Like that is the way I would describe it because like Jeff Welton, the Magic's president of Aspen Operations pretty much said it like the day after they lost game seven. The whole thesis of this off season was when we were healthy, we were pretty good. Like when our team was healthy and we had our five best players on the floor together, they were pretty good together. They were pretty, they were really good in the playoffs. And we were up, we were one win away from getting out of the first round, if not for Franz Wagner injury, if not for the worst half of offensive basketball in the history of the

4:09NBA, or at least the bottom history of the NBA. And that seemed to be the animating thing of this off season is that it was just injuries. And I don't know if I buy that completely. I don't buy that completely. I think they needed to do more. I think there were things they needed to address. But there's a lot of faith in what they have. And numbers back it up a little bit, but there's a lot of faith in what they have and trying to see this project that they put together actually out on the court together for a more extended period of time and just hoping for better injury luck, which is probably something you can maybe count on, but also spend the problem the last two years. So maybe you shouldn't be betting on that. You mentioned the worst half of offensive basketball in modern NBA history. And that is, that's one I won't forget. Like I wasn't watching that live in game six that was in Orlando for the magic head of a big lead.

5:10I believe it was and had an opportunity to eliminate the Detroit pistons. But obviously if they would have won that series, they would have faced the calves in the second round. So I'm watching this live and I'm not watching it live. I'm following the score because the calves were playing the Raptors in their own game six. That was the game RJ Barrett hit that miraculous three pointer to win the game and overtime for Toronto. But I'm watching that score. And I'm like, the magic are really going to do this. And I'm sitting inside Scotia Bank Arena. I'm like, man, I've got a great hotel booked in Orlando. Like this is going to be awesome. I'm going to get to golf. Maybe the cat and I thought the calves were going to win at that point in game six. I'm like, I'm going to get a couple of days off. I'm going to get to go home, going to have days off at home. And then I'm going to get to go golf in Orlando. This is going to be great. And then I see the magic score. Like I don't know. It felt like three points in the third quarter. And then maybe five points. Plus four quarters. Like, let's go. They're not going to win this series. Like this. And of course, the calves lost that day too. I'm like, maybe it's going to be Raptor's pistons in the second round.

6:12When in an hour ago, I thought it was going to be calves magic, which I do think kind of speaks to how wild both those series were. But that was a really bad offense performance. And I do agree to some extent. Like I think that Hadfran's Wagner knock out in her. The Orlando Magic do win that series. Like that's a really, really big deal. And a big part of the reason why the pistons were able to come back from down three. One in that series. But you mentioned health and that this is running this team back. Is a bet on their health. But you also said you don't think that they did enough. Why do you think that's not the best bet that they could have made? You know, quite simply, like, just, you know, some of it is just payroll reality. Like the magic are, you know, and this is going to be crazy to people who don't, like who don't follow the payroll stuff as much. The magic are two and a half million dollars beneath the second apron right now. Like they've gotten very expensive very quickly. Palo's on his max, Francis on his max, Desmond Bain's on a $35 million, $38 million contract.

7:16Jalen Suggs is in the last year where he's above 30 million. They got four players that they're paying over $30 million. And the reality is when you're that expensive and Cousins can probably relate to this and probably ask themselves these questions too. When you're that expensive, you've got to be competing for championships. Like there's, there's, you know, the way it works now in the league, I feel like, is you're attacking and you're retreating. You know, you attack, you build up a lot of payroll, you get, you take your shot, and then you retreat back to the safety of below the first apron. Like maybe you're still a tax team, but you're below the first apron. And regardless of what the magic do with the anti-blocks contract, it feels like they're going to have to retreat here very, very soon. And so, yes, I think Franz Wagner playing only 35 games, I believe it was 34, 35 games during the regular season, he missed 47 to 51 games in the middle of the season with the high ankle sprain. And then missed the last three games.

8:17Like, yes, Franz Wagner's injury prevented this team from being the best version of itself. But I think you can't have watched that team and said, this is a championship team in waiting. And some of that is a development of their stars. Like, Palo Bancaro is a very, very good player. I think some of the conversations about him have kind of jumped a shark to where like, no, no, no, no, now you're going a little crazy on who he is as a player. But he's the player you're invested in to be a championship level player. And he's, he's got to take another step in this game. And then some of, and he's got to answer some of those criticisms that have a lot of people down on him right now. Franz Wagner's obviously got to be healthy. But, you know, we're here celebrating like a team that finished 18th and offensive rating is the best offensive team the magic have had since Dwight Howard left. Like, yes, they, they, they, they, there's, there's an evolution that needed to happen that I think the magic believed Desmond Bain would bring almost sort of by himself.

9:18I look, injuries, knock every injuries, major injuries like the magic face, knock everything down a peg. But it was just like, what happened in game six was an extreme. And in the playoffs, like your weaknesses become extreme. Like, there's more 30 point losses in the playoffs and you see in a regular season, just because like with things get bad, they snowball really, really quickly. But like if you watch the magic through the course of the 82 game season, what happened in game six wasn't that surprising. Like I was sitting next to it. Like I was at the key of center for that game. The pistons writers like we're all congratulating me saying, hey, have fun in the second round. You know, enjoy Cleveland, enjoy Toronto. Like there were, they were, they were slapping me on the back. And I was just sitting there like, it's a lot of time left in this game, guys. There's a lot of time left in this game because I watched the magic give up a 32 to nothing run to the rappers. I watched the magic on that floor give up a 17 oh run to the rockets that gave a game way. They lost to the piecers when they're on a 12 game losing street in that building.

10:23Like it was just like, there, you know, we'll talk about the new coach, obviously, but like there was a disconnect somewhere in this roster. And it's just like at the end of the day, like you've got to be able to put the ball in the basket. Like that feels like I feel like that part of what was successful was about playoffs. They played the pistons who struggled to do that outside of Cape Cunningham and were deeply flawed team. And so it's just like, if you're going to be serious about competing for a championship, you got to understand your team's weaknesses. And the fact that the magic or so one of the worst three point shooting teams in the league, the fact that the magic still had an offense that looked like it was stuck in number. They couldn't really optimize their best to players a lot of times. It just felt like you can't be satisfied with where this team is at. You know, you got to be willing to take a risk. You got to be willing to say like this player didn't deliver in the biggest moment. We need to get someone better in here. And it just felt like, and this has been a problem for Jeff Welman in his 10 years

11:25what the magic is, he tends to hold on to his own players and tends to believe in the players he's drafted, especially. And it's just like as a championship level team and like Cleveland did this last year, the game, just this Cleveland make the conference finals if they don't trade serious Garland for James Hart. You know, like sometimes you got to, you got to be willing to roll the dice and go for broke and let the magic did that getting Desmond Bay. And so I don't want to take, you know, take away all the credit, but you look at that, you look at that roster, look at that team. And it's just like, that's not a championship team yet. And some of that needs to come from internal development. But a lot of it needs to come from, we need more players who can do things. We'll get to the coaching change in a second, but I want you to put yourself in Jeff Welman's shoes because it's one thing to say that no different things should have been done. But like, let's say you were Jeff Welman, what would you have done differently this summer? I think I, and I know, I know before you answer that, I guess. I know it's difficult to do this exercise without knowing exactly what was available to the magic. So I don't necessarily need you to be like, oh, this trade could have been on the table and they could have made it and they did it. But like, where would you have changed things?

14:27I guess this may be a better way to freeze that. I think it was a little unfair. No, no, no, no, and I'm very against like speculation and like, look, a lot of these trades are just math equations and figuring out how do we balance the cap sheet and like, I did do that exercise and it is tough because of the Salary Sumangia cap. But I would have looked very seriously at trading Jalen Sugs. Look, Jalen Sugs is the heartbeat of this team. You know, CavS fans remember the 2024 series, you know, probably very, very well and he's a big reason why they were able to get back into that series. And at this stage, it is career just writing the waves of him dealing with, you know, wondering if he's going to be healthy. And understanding that you've got Anthony Black and his extension do up. I felt it really has always felt like the magic needed like a more clear like game manager point car. And it's not that Jalen Sugs hasn't taken steps in that direction. But his attention to detail

15:33and his precision on those matters, especially are really inconsistent. And it was one thing when he had like a very up and down playoff series in 2024. You know, everyone remembers like Franz going one for one for 17 or one for 16, whatever it was in game seven. I would always point to it wasn't just Franz. Jalen Sugs was two for 15 in that game too. Like he really struggled in that critical game. And I entered game seven this this past season against the piston saying Jalen Sugs is playing for his job. Like his future on the Orlando magic is dependent on him showing up because palos showed up in that game. He had what 30 that just like in game seven in Cleveland. He showed up in game seven in Detroit. And you were searching for someone else to help pick up the slack a little bit and help him out. And Jalen Sugs shots sub 30% from three for that entire series. That's two playoffs. And he didn't play in 2025 against Celtics because he's hurt. So that's two playoffs where he didn't show up. And at the end of the day, like playoff performance

16:38matters. Like that's where you need to win games. And now you have two series where one of your key players really gets too emotional honestly. Like he took game six hard. Like Jalen, like I'm comfortable sharing the story. Like Jalen Sugs is usually very open with the media even after bad games. Like he'll talk and and he's you know, he's a heartbeat of the team. He hit in the back after game six. He did not he did not come out of the come out of the showers or come out of the back areas of the locker room to talk to the media after game six. And you could tell like that loss was a little bit traumatic. Like it we had to we had to wait him out a little bit after you know to talk to him after game seven. And and then ultimately like this tells you kind of how bad that series went. Magic didn't do exit interviews or they didn't make players available during exit interviews. Like they you know, I'll give Jeff Altman credit. I think he was trying to protect young players so that they wouldn't have to answer questions about firing Jamal Mosley. And and like answer some of those questions. But like you could tell there's like a C change with

17:42the team. And so just kind of felt like look if we're going to be serious like Palo Bankero said after the 2024 series like we need a table center. We need like a true point guard. And you think about the magic when they've been at their most successful and these are flawed players. But when they were at the most successful in 2024 is because Mark Elfoltz was the point guard leaving the way kind of like managing the team a little bit in 2025 people laughed at this but Corey Joseph was really valuable just as a guy that calmed everyone down and and gotta have got them into the offense and just like kind of stayed out of the way in a lot in some ways. Jalen sucks is still young enough that he can grow and and I don't think it's necessarily the wrong decision. But I I think that it's just very clear like to improve the offense you need better shooting and success is really inconsistent when he's when he's on the magic are unbeatable like when he's on like the magic are very different team but shooting thirty thirty thirty-three percent for whole season you're only on so many games. So it felt like there are clear needs that can take the magic to a championship level that they needed to explore and whether

18:45they did or not we don't know. But I think it was very clear that the magic were kind of like satisfied with their roster and saying like this was just injuries guys like let's let's try this again. Well it's injuries in betting that a coaching change is going to change things and listen that does happen at times like the calves they fired JB Bikerstaff you brought up 2024 after the calves to eat the magic in seven games in that series they lose the Celtics in five games next series which was a postseason series I think there was no shame in losing like that Celtics team was awesome and went on to win the title the calves were not in the same league as them but then they fired JB Bikerstaff and they hire Kenny Ackinson and they win 64 games the next year and some of it is they were much healthier the year after so that's kind of a similar bet and maybe these two teams are in or the magic I should say are in a similar spot that the calves weren't at that point but I do want it to talk about what do you expect to be different now that Jamal Mosley is the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans and that Sean Sweeney is the head coach a first time head coach in Orlando with the magic. I think the biggest thing that I'm

19:46expecting to be different is there to be a little bit more structure offensively. I think it's a first off like a coach lasting five years is very rare in the NBA today and so I think there is a little bit of like the voice just kind of lost its its juice and lost its mojo and you know the magic traded very hard on effort and I think that effort you know like if that's what you're trading on eventually like the same words over and over again from the same voice kind of where on you especially if you're still struggling with a lot of things. I think but I think it's important remember that the magic originally hired Jamal Mosley to get them out of a rebuild like he took over the team when they traded all their stars at the very very sort of rebuild they didn't have that you know Jalen Sugs and Franz Wagner were rookies. His job was to instill a foundation keep everybody positive happy you know sell them on a future and and get them to the playoffs and kind of get them there and then we'll see if he could take them the next

20:49step and obviously he could and so the offense that they ran was sort of very much about we're going to teach you what to read and and how to think through the game and so the offense was a little bit unstructured it was it was very much you know we're going to run pick and roll and you're going to make a read off of this and just react to what you're seeing and learn how to react to what you're seeing and I think that served them in that rebuilding phase and I think the hope with Sean Sweeney and look a lot of offenses are the same in the NBA it's just it comes down to execution and maybe how you disguise some things. I think what the hope is with Sean Sweeney is that he's going to be a little bit more purposeful with with what he's what he's running and what he wants the team to do and put up some more guardrails so that you know yeah I don't want to bring you know that's a bang on Jaylen Suggs too much but you know Jaylen Suggs is out in transition like he's not just going to drive wildly into the paint like he's going to be like okay I'm going to be here this player is going to be here I'm going to wait for this action to develop and and that's how

23:59smarter with square and get started today now there's a world where the magic become a different team and I don't know if I should say this out loud maybe top half of the league offensively maybe top 15 like they got out of the bottom third of the middle it's a dream maybe that's that's like a dream like select a whole thing to think about and I know that like it's a lot and you might have to calm yourself down there's a world where that happens with Sean tweening there's also a world where things don't really look that much different if and I don't want to necessarily like take a negative point of you here but if the coaching change doesn't make that much of a difference what do you think the next change for Orlando might be if the coaching change doesn't make much of a difference and I think the like as much as everyone wants to talk about the offense I think the more immediate thing the magic are expecting from Sean Sweeney is a return to the defense because the magic slipped a thirteenth in the league or twelfth in the league in defense of rating last year and and they just they just looked off defensively all season like my favorite factoid is they gave up more than

25:04120 points for what under sessions this eight times in the 2025 season last year they gave up more than 120 points for what under one of the processions 22 times which is just such a mass like there was something something didn't click last year and so the more immediate thing the magic are expecting is Sean Sweeney who was obviously like the architect of the Spurs defense which Victor Wembe and Yama helps a lot with that he brings him he's not bringing him but they're expecting a little bit more like ball pressure and trapping on the perimeter like that's that was a big staple of what the Spurs did but like they're expecting to be back in the top top five you know they were top five defense two years ago but there's a lot of really good defenses this year so they're expecting to be in the mix to be a top five defense again that's the more immediate thing but if it just feels like the same thing over and over again I do you know not only are they going to look to like move a guy like Jaylen Suggs or guy like Wendell Carter they'll probably

26:05listen to offers or begin fishing around for like for one of their stars for one of their bigger players you know Palo Frons and Des I think those are the three core players I think those are the players they'd least like to trade but if it just becomes clear like well like Palo is racking up a lot of stats and he's not really getting us anywhere you know yes it'll be the second year of a massive extension but they they're gonna have to find a way to to get a star player that fits more of what they're doing or you know I know everyone wants to pit the two against each other but they might just have to pick between Palo and Frons which guy are they really building around and do they actually complement and help each other and that's you know that's that's always a question for groups of players until they actually win and currently a couple years after they win it's still it's still a question but that's sort of where they're heading if they can't make that breakthrough they're trying to make I think it'll be an interesting thing to follow along

27:06because we've seen teams get to this point and be able to pop in fine success we've seen teams get to this point say okay we have to reimagine what this core looks like because we don't necessarily have the core or the ceiling I guess maybe it would be a better way to phrase it that we thought we might have I'll get you out here with this and this is a question that I've been asking everybody throughout this series and you can kind of go a number of different ways with it it's meant to be open ended but how would you define what success looks like for the 2026 2027 Orlando Magic? I think success to me is the thing that they haven't been able to accomplish the last two years so you know 2024 they played the seven game series with the Cavs I think as as disappointing as that loss in game seven was you know leading by what 17 in the first half on the road everybody felt like that was found money the fact that they had a competitive series against an experienced Cleveland team and it was just like it felt like the sky was the limit for this group

28:07and it was just like this was our first taste we took our lump and we're going to be back next year better than ever and they were to some extent until the until the Pallow injury and you know who knows who knows what would happen if Pallow didn't get hurt and then Franz and get hurt and then Jalen Suggs got hurt like they just they had whatever the injuries they had last year they were much worse than 2025 but the goal in 2025 for me was obviously you got to a game seven the next step is win a playoffs series but it was more to go up against a championship level team like they did in the Boston Celtics and figure out how close you really are and figure out what you really needed and last year I felt like the goal was this team I don't know the last year I felt like they could win a playoffs series and I wanted to see them pointing toward a championship like they didn't need to be a championship team last year even without how open the east was but they just needed to be like okay we see the path toward winning the big prize going to conference finals winning the big prize it's obviously like always a very narrow pathway it you know it's it you get you know

29:09you don't know how many shots you got at it but you need to be like okay we see a pathway to get there it still feels like that is the goal and and I know to people outside of Orlando that probably feels like super ambitious and and the cap stuff is a big reason why this has to be the goal but the goal for the magic I think is win a playoffs series and see a pathway to get to title whether that is palo van caro made the leap he's an all NBA level player now and it's like okay we have a star we can build around fronze vognor is his right hand man made his first all star game which he should have made the last two years if not for those injuries he's clearly these two we can build around these players we were still maybe figuring out exactly what we need around them but these two guys are the anchors for title contention for the next for the rest of their contracts at least for the next three four years which again windows are shrinking very much in the apron era so

30:09so you know maybe maybe it is we're taking a step back because we have to reconfigure some salary cap stuff but we're we got as long as we have palo fronze and desmond bane were were contenders in the east like that's that's I think what the conclusion needs to be after the season for the Orlando magic and again that is ambitious that is a big task but if you're going to pay these players that much in this era that's what it's got to be and and so I think that's what successes for the magic and that that is asking a lot of this team but I think that's what they that's where they got to be I'll tell you what the apron system does not discriminate it comes for everybody whether you get to a championship caliber roster whether you come up short it does not matter the apron comes for everybody and it could come for the Orlando magic in the next 12 months or or so we'll have to wait and see we'll have to see how this year goes I think there were more interesting teams in the eastern conference I think they have a high ceiling I also think given their injury history for some of their main guys I think they're pretty low floor too so they're an interesting team to see they'll be an interesting team to watch the regular season and they're an interesting team to hear about and
