Open AI says it has built an automated research intern and the United Nations Human Rights Chief warns that advanced AI could pose an existential risk to humanity. Let's get into it. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang declared on Sunday that artificial general intelligence has arrived. In a post on X, Huang credited Open AI's newly released GPT-6 astramodel, which he said was trained on more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell systems. He congratulated the Open AI team and added that 400,000 more graphics processors are coming online next. It is a striking claim from the man whose company sells the hard we're underpinning that training run. Open AI itself has not declared that artificial general intelligence has been achieved.
And its president has stopped short of the term. Independent researchers were quick to note that no agreed benchmark exists for the milestone Huang says has now been passed. From the chipmaker to the lab. Open AI says it has reached an internal milestone. It calls the automated research intern. In a research acceleration update published Sunday, the company described a system able to carry out well-defined research tasks under human direction, running experiments and reporting results without step-by-step supervision. Open AI framed it as a waypoint, rather than a destination. Saying its target is a fully automated AI researcher by March of 2028. The company was careful to note the system works within human set problems and does not choose its own research agenda. The claim is self-measured with no external evaluation attached and it lands the same weekend
the company's own chief scientist warned publicly that safety work is falling behind capability. Redmond makes its own move. Microsoft Chief Executive, Satya Nadella, announced a new wave of in-house AI models heading into co-pilot. The company unveiled seven new models in its MAI family, built internally rather than licensed. Alongside an autopilot experience, powered by an internal effort, codenamed Project Opal, Microsoft framed the release as hill climbing, a steady march of incremental gains rather than one leap. The strategic subtext is hard to miss. Microsoft has leaned heavily on open AI's models inside co-pilot and every model it builds itself reduces that dependence. Coverage so far has been thin outside a handful of outlets and Microsoft has not published benchmark comparisons against the frontier systems its own products currently rely on, now to Geneva. The United Nations Human Rights Chief told the Human Rights Council on Monday
that advanced artificial intelligence could pose an existential risk to humanity. Volkerturk said he shares the concerns voiced by people inside the industry itself and called for stringent safety guarantees before the most capable systems are deployed more widely. It is unusually direct language from the office, which has more often framed AI through the lens of privacy, surveillance, and discrimination. Turk tied the warning to a broader argument that human rights law already provides the framework regulators need and that governments have been slow to apply it. The remarks carry no binding force but they set the tone for the council's current session. Beijing sets new rules. China's Supreme People's Court issued new judicial guidelines on Monday covering artificial intelligence disputes. State news agency Shinhua reported the rules address deepfakes, voice cloning, algorithmic price discrimination, and AI-generated false information. Among the provisions, courts are directed
to treat the use of AI to create or distribute a recognizable likeness of a person without consent as an infringement of personality rights. The guidelines also take aim at platforms that use algorithms to charge different customers different prices for the same product. Chinese courts have been handling AI likeness cases individually for two years. This is the first attempt to give the lower courts a single consistent framework to apply. And a sovereign chip decision. Malaysia is seriously evaluating Huawei artificial intelligence chips for its national sovereign AI program, according to a Bloomberg report published Monday. The initiative carries a budget of roughly two billion ringgit. In officials are weighing Huawei's ascended accelerators despite explicit warnings from the United States about using Chinese hardware. Nothing has been finalized. And Malaysia has previously distanced itself from an earlier Huawei chip project after Washington objected. The calculation is a familiar one for middle powers.
American export controls limit what Malaysia can buy from Nvidia, while Chinese suppliers are willing and available. Kuala Lumpur has said it wants domestic control of the compute its government agencies run on. The chip story continues. A New York Times investigation published Sunday reports that a blacklisted Chinese server maker kept buying advanced American technology through an American subsidiary. In Spur was placed on the United States entity list, but its subsidiary, Eves, was not. According to the report, Eves exported at least $5.6 billion in advanced technology between April of 2024 and February of this year, including more than $3 billion in computers built around Nvidia Blackwell chips. The reporting points at a structural gap in export controls. Blacklisting a parent company does not automatically capture its differently named subsidiaries. An enforcement has depended on regulators
noticing the relationship. Neither company had commented publicly at the time of publication. Canberra takes a different route. Australia announced plans on Sunday for legislation that would let social media users switch off personalized recommendation algorithms. The proposal sits inside a broader digital duty of care framework aimed at protecting children from harmful content. Under the plan, platforms would have to offer an opt-out from algorithmic ranking, giving users a chronological or unranked feed instead. It is draft policy, not law. Legislation is expected later, and the detail of what counts as an algorithm will decide how much it actually changes. Australia has become the most aggressive regulator of social platforms in the English-speaking world after its under-16 social media ban, and the algorithm proposal extends that approach from access to design to the funding desk. Indian space technology startup Pixel closed a $100 million series C-Round, announced Sunday.
Temasek and Serifim led the round, bringing the company's total funding to $195 million. Pixel builds hyper-spectral imaging satellites, which capture hundreds of narrow bands of light, rather than the handful, a conventional imaging satellite records. That extra spectral detail is what makes the data useful to machine learning models, tracking crop health, mineral deposits, methane leaks, and water quality. The money goes toward expanding satellite manufacturing capacity and building out operations in both India and the United States. It is one of the largest rounds an Indian space company has raised. Next, AI in the sky. Google and Cathay Pacific expanded a joint trial using artificial intelligence to cut the climate impact of aircraft contrails, announced Monday. Contrails, the thin white lines aircraft leave behind, trap heat in the atmosphere, and account for a meaningful share of aviation's warming effect.
Google's models combine satellite imagery, weather data, and flight plans to predict which routes will produce persistent contrails and pilots then make slight altitude adjustments to avoid those layers. The expansion moves the trial onto ultra long haul flights. More than 80 flights have flown avoidance routes so far with an estimated 40% reduction in contrail warming impact. The open question is the fuel cost of flying higher or lower. From the air to the ground. A Reuters investigation published Monday reports that Chinese military institutions are actively researching battlefield applications for humanoid robots. The reporting draws on procurement documents, patents, and academic papers, and describes military linked buyers acquiring humanoid platforms and running training programs around them. Reuters was explicit about the limits of what it found. There is no evidence of an armed humanoid robot deployed with an operational unit. And much of the work sits at the research
and evaluation stage. Chinese manufacturers have spent the past two years demonstrating humanoids on stage at trade shows and dancing at televised gallows. The same platforms are now being assessed for logistics, reconnaissance, and eventually combat support roles. One retreat to close on. Japanese electronics maker, NEC, has ended development of gate-based quantum computing hardware, according to reporting that surface Sunday. The company will concentrate instead on quantum annealing. A narrower approach suited to optimization problems rather than the general purpose machines its rivals are chasing. NEC continues to sell annealing services and software. So this is a redirection rather than an exit from quantum altogether. The decision is a useful marker of where the money is going. Building gate-based quantum hardware is extraordinarily capital intensive. And the capital that once flowed toward it
