Following baseball means following it to new cities new ball parks new neighborhoods new restaurants and new spots to hit before the very first pitch Sometimes that's a hotel right in the heart of Boston or a weekend in San Diego booking.com makes it easy for every baseball fan to find the right stay Wherever the game is taking you next from where you are to where you want to be that's booking.com booking dot yeah an official travel partner of MLB major league baseball trademarks used with permission. It is Tuesday, September 8th, 2026. This is another edition of baseball today presented you by T mobile that Is my man Trevor Plut? I'm Chris Rose producer day and along for the ride as well. I hope everybody out there had a happy healthy labor day weekend Including my dear friend T Plut. How are you? I'm doing great. Yeah, I had a you know besides the rain Which took over Southern California at a great time, you know, we had some family overs spent some time back yard barbecue and it up So yeah, good times for sure. Did you how was the weekend celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary?
Yeah, that was very nice. We actually went out with Another couple who also celebrated a wedding anniversary that night Happens to be Josh's best friends parents. So the six of us went out and And how do you like this for the shock of all shocks the bill comes the boys paid for it? My face look bill Somebody's growing up proud pop a moment. That was nice. That was nice. Thank you Brewers No, not Brady Josh. Okay. Yeah, Josh. He's actually a working man. Not a college kid. He's a working guy So that was pretty cool. What Josh? We'll step up. Yeah, typically cap to Josh and his Best friend Cole boulding Different apt took center stage It was a minor league affair that came up major and perfect The left hand or lips the leg pitches home swing and bounce him on a short. This should do it. Garcia's try to first It's a perfect game for Thomas Pannon
Yeah, the fifth time in the internationally in 142 years. We had a nine inning perfect game from a pitcher 142 years that leagues been around the fifth time that's insane. I mean, I played in that league Yeah, and I know how old it is. I can't believe that's only the fifth time because I understand like nowadays We don't let our minor league guys pitch nine innings, but back in the day. I think they did all the time Yeah, and the interesting thing is this is a 32 year old journeyman those drafted in 2013 He's pitched 51 games with big league level between Toronto and Milwaukee Also did get pop for PDs back in the day um, so his journey has Not been linear at all it has had its highs. It has had its lows But this one Cool moment overall. Yeah, cool moment to be the cap. Okay Uh, so we're gonna start off with this uh, I don't Josh Donaldson I do not know where John Boyz gonna pencil Aaron judge into the starting lineup tonight
But I am happy to let everybody know that Aaron judge has been activated for the first time since late May He has missed more than three months because of a broken rib high up in the rib cage So the three time MVP is back does that mean that New York is the front runner to represent the American league in the world series Uh, I Some clothes I'd say I still say no. I think the team that gets the the buy in the American the east will be the front runner Because you don't got to go through a three game set that you know how that goes and then you're able to line your pitching up So as of right now the four games back at Tampa Bay. I believe The Tampa has the tiebreaker as well. So Add that on to I would still put Tampa Bay as the favor just because of that like you're gonna have to go up and either be in Boston for a three game set or host Boston Uh, and again The calling card for the Yankees this year has definitely not been the offense. They played still very well 81 and 62 today
Without judge, but the pitching has been great if you're not able to line your pitching up for that five game series I do think that puts you in a little bit of a hole. So I think it'd be like the scariest team like I think they might even be the best roster When it comes down to it, but I'll still put the team that has the buy in front as The favorite if that makes sense Well, it does But let's remember that the Dodgers did not need the right I'm talking about this year, Chris and and the fact that they're pitching is the reason they win games and they're not going to line it up for that five game set Well, we have talked a ton this year that there's basically three teams in the American League and they all reside in the American League East So you're right. I mean if Tampa ends up holding on to the vision and they've got a four game lead and they're this close to making It a tiebreaker on top of the Yankees. They do have one more series left and I believe that Tampa Bay already has six victories in the season series So they're very very close to solidifying that That really important tiebreaker. So here's the deal the Yankees were only six games over 500 without Aaron judge
More importantly, they were only 26th and run scored during his absence You'd have to be a complete moron to not understand How just his arrival Changes things now it might take him a little while to get going He did not have a minor league rehab assignment. We have even seen years where Aaron judge started slowly out of the gate in late March And early April that sort of stuff can happen, but just the threat of having him back in the lineup hitting second, I guess Jimmy. I'm assuming that's where you'll put him tonight that It just changes everything it changes the thought process for the pitcher It changes the thought process for the manager and for the pitching coach and how you're going to utilize your bullpen and everything else So the threat of him there in my opinion would make them the favorite Not by a ton because yeah, I do believe that they're going to have to go through Boston in a three game set and that can get really really hairy
I'm fine with you saying that I have no problem. I do think those teams are all pretty damn close You're right the ten to ten has a six three series lead in during the year. So you add Aaron judge to You know one of the best rotations in baseball and clearly that's going to make your team a lot better Best hitter in baseball one of the best rotations of baseball. I like the mash up there I just I just think the wild card thing is interesting man Well, of course it is because Boston now that it's gotten Roman Anthony and Trevor story back Anthony's obviously the bigger bat of the two but you know they've got More than just a decent pitching staff they can go toe-to-toe with the Yankees in the playoffs I mean, let's remember you know sunny gray has been as good as virtually any pitcher in the American league this year Ranger Suarez is a playoff demon Peyton toley has pitched exceptionally well if they have to go to a third game They have plenty of arms that they can put back in the bullpen in addition to the guys that have already done it
Plus the oldest Chapman whom we'll talk about a little bit later. It's that can be a mess I mean it cost the Yankees last year. They just got smacked around by Toronto in that divisional series And I guess I have to say this I had the twins beat in the Yankees in the playoffs series This year and now that doesn't seem like it's gonna happen No, I don't we don't need to bring that up So let us know um What do you expect out of Aaron Judges return Yankee fans that are out there and we know that there's a few that listen to our media company Uh, how much does it change your confidence level? Do you think it does make you the front runner? Are you still terrified if you have to have a three game series against your art rival in the wild card round Which will not be easy? In fact, we really have to go through the full 26 man roster to break that one down What to see Lot to get to with that but it's great to have an injured back Very important very important go All right today's episode it is sponsored by amazon this back to school season spend less on your kids with amazon
You want to give your kids a great start to the year we get that but back to school as a way of absolutely thrashing your budget the supply list keeps growing your kids keep growing What does that mean the close stop fitting and somehow there's always one more thing on the teachers list you got to get Well, amazon helps you handle all of it without losing your mind or your wallet. Here's a great thing Uh, my youngest son Brady is in college He needed this that the other thing. I was like good go on the amazon account It'll show up right at the fraternity house no problem in less than 24 hours. It was there for Trevor Teddy and ila They're middle school or an elementary school usually in years pass That would mean zigzag and all across the laws and jails because they got to get 10 different things on 10 different teachers list No, we're talking about one stop shopping. They sit down at the computer or driver's phone They figure it out and voila everything appears at the door that's amazon for you during the back to school year We're talking about everything backpacks lunchboxes notebooks headphones clothes
Computer gadgets great prices huge selection and once again, it shows up at your friendly confines before you know it So remember with amazon's low back school prices just spend less on your kids because every dollar You don't spend on them is a dollar you haven't spent on them All right everybody Make the adjustment Thank you According to the athletic Major league baseball over the weekend ruled it umpire dug eddings overstepped his boundaries During a series in colorado We're gonna take you back to friday night when the veteran umpire Doug eddings told the cardinal sketcher hey clean it up out there He's talking about a rookie pitcher Hansel rinkone wondering what fix his hat So allie marmalz like what are you doing then they get called for a time violation because of that And eventually marmalz like what are you doing dude you're taking over this game So marmalz comes out he gets the old hevo and he really gotten dug eddings face
I the old with you get out of here well here is marmalz on what happened Some words exchanged air quite honestly. I thought it was pretty embarrassing on his end um We have a kid making his debut and In between in that bat He tells him that he needs to fix his hat and the kids not gonna wear his hat like that on my field So last I checked this was coarse field um, so I took issues with it Um, and then the pitch violation while I'm out there having a discussion That's also steep in my opinion. So there's a lot of moving parts to that one at the end of the day I thought they handled it poorly and I'd like an explanation at some point Good news for the cardinals is they actually won that game on a heroic home run in the late going So then we fast forward to saturday and The cardinals in a show of solidarity all show up with their hats tilted In fact a few of the Colorado Rockies reportedly did the same thing Okay, so they got to dug eddings and I'm talking about the league and you saw that rinkone actually was walking out to his spot in the bullpen
After the first inning and edding stops him shakes hands with him reportedly told him look I'm sorry that happened have a great career young man And rinkone didn't make a big deal of it to his credit now once again The athletic is reporting it's still unclear whether eddings has or will face further discipline should he in your opinion? I mean What are they gonna do? I don't even know what that means for the umpire's association The only thing I can think of is like the he just doesn't get to To umpire in October or maybe his assignment gets knocked down a little bit. What else can they do like this is We talk about this all the time umpires never getting trouble. If you're talking about is it my league? I mean he's he gets a stern talking to and and what is you doing baby and don't ever do that again? Doug I mean, I don't know what there is we can do with this guy. I think it was completely ridiculous For him to tell that you didn't even mention the fact that he blamed it on hunter goodness
And then hunter goodness like what I didn't say any of those things Doug So I I don't know where to go with this I usually have like a good memory of umpires in my mind Doug was surely around when I was playing I don't really remember Doug good or bad. So that's you know, that's my take on him, but um I in my opinion yes, they should I just don't know what they're going to do About it this whole thing is ridiculous and I love alley marmal in the way he handled it I love the fact that they came out in the crooked hats You know what and give credit to Doug here's one thing I'll say give credit to Doug for going and making sure that he said Sorry face to face. I mean that counts for something I think but the whole thing was handled so ridiculously And this is like a pattern for Doug because you know after this happened all these articles came out Okay, what about what he did with Paul schemes a couple years ago And he just kind of has a track record of it so
You know, you got to clean it up Doug. We can't be having this happen all the time Okay, so the thing you're talking about with hunter goodman Was that eddings after friday's incident did speak with two reporters, okay He intimated that one of the Colorado Rockies batters Asked him hey, can that dude wear his hat like that and eddings said I don't really know it's kind of an unwritten rule, but you know what catcher go tell your pitcher to Not wears hat tilted. This is a big league field and that's not gonna happen on my field now It sounded like it came from hunter goodman on Saturday goodman came out and said no I don't give his shit how he wears his hat. I'm trying to find the ball out of his hand That was not me the other guy it possibly could have been was cold carry It based on where they were hitting in the order Carreg has not come out and said it was me Nobody on Colorado said it was one of their players
In fact, I checked with Kelsey and Kelsey said cold carreg is as new schools it gets Let's remember this is the guy that was flipping off the fans in Atlanta So I can't imagine he gives a shit whether a guy wears a tilted cap or not So if I'm major league baseball there's a major source of concern. This is more than a guy Just having an up show we have up shows all the time we've talked about it for years and years and years decades to be honest It was worse when I was a kid But this is a lack of trust from fans out there and teams because after Marmal was ejected There was a play at the plate that was not even close Troy Johnston who was the runner on a bunch attempt Mouth the words I'm out You're gonna see it very clearly Live and on replay that Johnston is tagged out and Doug Eddings is in perfect position You would assume and it's not even close And he calls him safe The Cardinals did not have any reviews the problem with this play is A lot of baseball fans think that Eddings had it out for the Cardinals based on what trust transpired
A kid showing up with a cook a hat him having to talk to his catcher about it Marmal coming out and getting the time violation and then getting ejected So the perception is that the umpires holding a grudge against the team We cannot live in sports where we think that our officials are umpiring with a grudge or repping with a grudge That's where there's a major problem That's why major league baseball should have sat Doug Eddings until there was a full investigation this weekend Investigation to what? In investigation and to possibly line When you are saying that a player on a team Told me to go look at this That's a Trevor you don't have a problem with that if you lie about it Do have a problem with it Chris we're talking about this has been going on since the beginning of baseball umpires holding grudges Just recently became not a thing with the ABS challenge system With as much This is the only this is the only year we're hasn't been Apronise you dude
So you you played at a time where umpires you felt like the umpires had it out 14 100% if you're a rookie you were not getting any calls you couldn't even look at them if you did something wrong If you if you kicked the dirt in the in the batter's box and said something like there was just This has been going on forever Forever now it was a that play was so egregious. It was ridiculous So I think Doug Eddings like you know did hold a grudge and took it out on the car No, yeah, I do. I don't think he was there and and was like uh He got his hand in there. I think he was like if this is a close play. I'm going rockies here screw you Marmal stuff like that I do think I have that's but but that's been going on forever Well, you don't have a problem with it. Do I have a problem with yeah, I do but like I mean again I I'm I'm here with you. I get it like umpires I've I've said on the show many times. I wish umpires could be held accountable
I just don't know what they're gonna do because they it just has never happened and until something happens You know, I'm just gonna be like all right I don't know carry on because that's the way bastion players have had to do the like the entirety of baseball Would you feel better if major league? We've talked we talk about this several times a year how baseball sweep shit under the rug And they just hope it goes away like that's how they pair it. It's terrible Would you feel better if they came out today and said we have done an investigation We've talked to all the parties we talked to Doug Eding's we talked to the Colorado Rockies players that he said May have said something and we found the Doug Eding's lied I'm not saying he did but let's say their investigation came out and said that In the meantime, we are going to suspend Doug Eding's he is not allowed to work any postseason because of this and He's going to be suspended just like a player when they it doesn't mean they're fired It doesn't mean that they can't come back. It just means that you are going to be penalized We see it every year when guys throw at people or do something that's wrong on the field you they they get suspended
And we don't make a big deal about it Why is it we can't do that here it makes so much sense to have an investigation Okay, if there was like if you or somehow you could find facts out Yes, I'd be I'd be okay with it I just don't think you're going to be able to find facts with an investigation because an umpires Can just say especially if you're talking about that call at home you can't there's no facts there You're just talking about did he lie and did a Colorado player tell him that's the only thing That's pretty big and again don't know how you can prove that that's a he said she said thing So I This is what's going to happen because this is what always happens Majority baseball is going to play the 24 hour news cycle and just get the hell away from this situation because I mean the whole league is embedded into gambling they don't want to have any of this surface and for it to be a problem You suspend somebody because you think that they're Not calling games the right way that affects that entire industry. So they're gonna say
I mean whatever just play on hey, did you guys see what happened in Atlanta? You know like with the or like they're gonna move on that's what they do I agree that that's how they should do it. It doesn't make me feel any better I mean The cardinals saved dug-eddings if they lose that game. I mean there are in a playoff hunt They're they're still a bunch of games back, but they're still in it at least I mean come we have we have in my opinion we have to be better as human beings. I don't know dug-eddings Maybe he was just having a bad day I don't know I'd have to take your judgment and Players who play today and guys who retired recently have to take your judgment on that. So it is possibly at a bad day But we have to demand to be better. Come on and what like why the hat thing everyone wears their hat crooked It's ridiculous. I can name like off the top of my head. I'm gonna go right now um CC sabathea. Yeah
um Fernando Rodney's big with don trail willis my guy D train Pedro strape So he grays doing it right now Every lefty that's ever pitched in the big leagues like I don't know what are we doing because he's a rookie That's what happens these guys man. It's so funny if you watch an umpire uh, let's just go at manager side Managers that like are new managers watch the way an umpire talks to them Watch the way an umpire argues with them They have this like senior rory fucking thing. It's crazy. They'll let somebody who's been in the big leagues for Some time come out and argue and they'll have the discussion. They'll do all this But if you're if you're a rookie, they'll say you just got here. That's like this Well, I don't know. I have a pro you know, you know me and umpires dude like they're just They're untouchable. What are they gonna do with them? Well, I would like to have um accountability and it is A lot of good ones out there though. We can't can't yeah, I'll tell you this if I were to rise them all in one spot here
If I were good umpire, I wouldn't protect them. I'd be embarrassed by that behavior I would be and I'd say we need to be better like we do we we need to be better um Two other things I know that we have we have gambling sponsorships on these shows so you don't have to write in the comments like right We We do I mean yeah, I got it. I got it. We're not umpires. We have no effect on the game What do you mean? What's the exactly? It's just people think that because There are gambling sponsorships on the show that you can't talk about gambling and the effects that it has on pro sports totally can you can um Number two you talked about the incident with Paul schemes when he was a rookie from 2024 here it is I Don't know get back here young man outside don't be walking off See
Yeah You talked to on dead Shalty That's what I'm talking about though Chris it's it's if he would you think he would do that this year of paul scheme He wouldn't But because paul is a rookie it's like this weird thing with them Yeah, this is a real problem This was a real problem Doug adding man to get in here getting in a lot today and he should yeah, you don't think he should Uh, I think yeah, I mean yes, I do um, he's had like again a littered history a past of all this um I think we can go down and look at a lot of umpires Do the same thing Well, I think it's shitty. I mean I get the missed calls miss calls happen bad strike zones happen Hopefully it's less and less with ABS bad calls do happen He's not the first guy to have a play at the plate where it was totally botched But because of what happened if you're connecting dots
You got you got to talk to guys like They played in the 90s or before and to early 2000s and talked to them about umpires and the grudges and like it's I know and I don't know I I like to live in a world where I think we can make progress Instead of the answer being well, that's the way it's always been But there's just no answer for it. There's there's no answer for it There is an answer for it if you're a league And you want answers you can go find them the lead to the order of ABS The ABS doesn't help plays at the plate bro. There's there's challenges all these things are now Implemented to try to make sure the call gets right that's that's In the absolutely you're right. All that stuff is and it couldn't be in play. Oh, yes. Hello, Ila off to school Bye, bye, Ila bye Hopefully dug-edding doesn't umpening your games in the near future
just saying Time right now for our segment made it look easy presented by bookin.com bookin. Yeah An official travel partner of MLB and we're talking about a guy who certainly made it look easy Like that great four game set that just wrapped up between Philadelphia and Atlanta. There was some great stuff Hey, Zuzalosardo congratulations to him not only was he pitching in the ninth inning for the first time ever on Monday A two-hit shutout that was pretty damn impressive Kyle Schwarber not Carl Schwarber as I called him on Friday show Because I had a little marble mouth working. It's another home run Dude's gonna have back-to-back 50 Homer seasons. I think god. That's great But the Atlanta Braves walk in there and they say just fine with us We'll take a split of a four game series no problem and guess who took center stage Ronald a cunya how about this on Sunday Muscle on muscle one two It's a high fly ball. It's deep black field. It's way back and we are tied
Ronald a cunya junior lays in the one and Philadelphia You have as a game the Braves won and even took a curtain call on the road and afterward talk smack Well, I know you never miss. I love it when they boom me every time So that's motivation for me and my and my thing you know, I can show in today and there's going to be How much did you love the weekend between Ronald a cunya and the Phillies fans? I love this series For a plethora of reasons Ronald was obviously a huge part of it The abat like was incredible. I was at seven straight heaters finally gets to the last one Thousand couple off gets the pitch that he wants and goes yard. I think that was awesome. I mean he's been a menace To the Phillies his entire career. He just absolutely rakes against them And I look I love when guys show up in rivalry games But specifically when they show up on the road that to me
That means you got some dog in you. It's not easy man You feel the energy especially in Philadelphia one of the hardest places to play as a visitor that there is and then you show up Against a really good pitching staff A teen that's hot and you And you make it happen you know essentially you save the series for For the braze. I thought it was awesome man It's great It's great because he loves being the heel in this series some guys hide from it or they try and play it off like Yeah, you know what I was just trying to help the team win he went into that series We played a sound bite on Friday show where he was like yeah, I get booed and I love every minute of it What does he do in the first three games of the series? He has multi hits in every game ended up going seven for 15 in the four game set including Now he did hit a home or what was it on Saturday Where they were way behind to hit one off of Zach Wheeler and he does his little fly in the plane thing Is he's running around the bases and you can see Wheeler fish on him. What are you shaking your head about?
I just I don't why is everyone mad at that like dude this is How how it's been now 10 years right guys being able to do whatever the hell they want around the bases So what what are we still getting that about? We're not and they did ask Wheeler about it afterward He did say when I struck him out later. Yeah, basically I had the red ass going and we have a guy in Kyle Schwerber Who hits 50 bombs a year and he just puts his head down and Schwerber was asked about he said look Yeah, I've been doing that my whole career. He goes some guys like to Run around the bases and they're a little more emphatic about he goes That's what makes our game great is that I'll put my head down and another guy won't and it's perfectly fine You could see when when Wheeler was talking in the post game press conference He was pissed and I I'm here for that I want guys who are on the other side who are pissed off about it and I want guys on the brave side like Ronald Acun you to be celebrating and do with freaking back flips around second base
I'm just like in that transitional era where I saw both sides of it I saw guys who you weren't even allowed to do a damn thing around the bases and now it's just a freaking free for all I I've land in between like if it's a If it's a big Homer Do what you got to do if it is a Homer that you know doesn't really do anything then He kind of just or should be more muted But again like that's that's old guy talking like do what you got this is today is game They they got to shout the boys out in the bullpen. You got to do your thing It actually to be honest with you at this point with hitters. It's not it's just like a What it was the word I'm looking for They're just used to doing it. It's just it's like muscle memory And you feel like if you don't do it you're not you go you messed up so like it's We're at that point now chris for nobody should have a problem with it unless it's directed towards the picture Again, I'll always say that if you're celebrating with your team with the boys in the bullpen your dog
I'll do what you got to do if you start popping off towards the picture then yeah, of course that's a problem Yeah, I think most people can see a different Side of that, but I do like it that knew I want it like how bad do you want to see Wheeler Acuni in the playoffs now Sign me up. Yeah, I mean I want to see it with the game on the line Dan. Did you ever get that that Vio He's still with us there it is no the one where he hits off a Wheeler Hey guys sent that do we get that Well, I think that was the homeroff in Wheeler that was the home run against you. That was the homeroff of Wheeler Yeah, okay, maybe let's see. Let's see if we can watch him fly around the bases here. Yeah, he you know That's what what's wrong with this what are we complaining about Well, he's about to do there we go nothing. There's zero wrong with that. He does it every time That's what makes be whoever you are this is you can't be mad at this. This is this is crazy
That's the Miguel Cabrera like come on man But you can sit look I mean you can see what's looking at him the whole time He followed him. Yeah, that's Not a big deal, but I want to tell you man like it's I like it that Wheeler's got the ass too because I don't want everybody seeing the game the same Yeah, but he's got the ass of what's he gonna do about it. He's not gonna hit him. No, he's so well, you know just Well, I'm not next time. I don't know. That's what he did. Yeah, that's great. It's a fun All right, so it's a four game lead for Atlanta technically it's five because they won the season series over the weekend as well Are you declaring this division the national league east on Tuesday, September 8th over They don't play each other again, right? Yeah, they do my next week. Oh, they do Hmm
No, it's not over then No, I thought they were done. Okay, no, it's not over Um So it's close, but not quite Atlanta. I got their next four series Tampa Philly the Cubs and Astros. Yeah That's all teams that hold playoff spots and you know My ammy at the end of the season. You know, they're just gonna be the little piranhas out there Yeah, maybe they've kind of let things slide through their fingers a little bit You never know Griffin Cohen. I see you later I would say it's 93% done I would say 93% of the precincts have reported in the national league east. I mean, too They they the Philly's could be leading this division by the end of The week good They could there's yeah, I can't I can't say that by the way I don't want to go back to something you said the Cardinals were still in the playoff hunt You said that those words came out of your mouth. Okay, well We came out of your mouth Chris
There five games back that mean who's still in the playoff hunt them my twins four and a half games Sure, I mean, I'm willing to say But I said I believe barely was also with a word used I think I think my guardians are so bad. They're so bad All right, so a lot to get to did the akunya celebrations bother you did wheelers response bother you Is this division over a lot of stuff to get on the comments section if you don't mind place a lot of stuff And a quick shout out to our partners also at booking.com making it easy for baseball fans to get where they want to be booking.com booking. Yeah, an official travel partner of major league baseball major league baseball trademarks used with permission All right the brewers Clinch the season series with a win over the cubs and what a ninth inning it was Monday
I drive into deep right center field Lark going back This is a star He makes another great play That is Right feel that one back down its way Here In the air to let feel trio over Slides Jackson trio Makes the catch to end the game The council's got his hands up. Yes, he did catch it. Great. Sorry about that. What a fun filled Top of the ninth of Laura's catch how many times has he done that? I'm sick of larried it to the twins a couple different times in that series hurt my hurt my soul. So Yeah, he's fun though. He like I don't know how to explain it's like he's He gets to the he gets to the wall where you think he's gonna take another step and study just like jumps and but he's somehow able
He's got the springs to go up and get it. It's crazy Yeah, pretty impressive for a little dude out there. He's been great defensively. So magic number for Milwaukee is officially At four so that they could clinch any day remember a few years ago former brewers manager and current cubs skipper Craig council said There is a pretty wide margin between these teams then last year they played that awesome five game set in the division around one by milwaki As we approach October Does it feel like there is a sizable gap between these teams or is the margin pretty narrow It feels like there's a gap and you know, I've watched a lot of these games and really For the most part I think I think the season series is seven to four And in those seven wins like the cubs just don't score runs You know like that's that's been the kind of the overarching theme is Milwaukee's pitching staff just does the job you know, they get some timely hitting and they do it so I think A lot has to go right for the cubs to be a better team than the brewers like somebody's got to dominate the game
For them to be a better team than the brewers the brewers on the other hand they just got to play their game like they're going to To defend and I know that the cubs can too, but for some reason it seems like milwaki comes up with the big play more often than the cubs Even though overall they're probably pretty damn similar as far as defensive teams. I mean the cubs can go do that as well too But then it's like the moving the runners the pressure they put on the base pass The again the timely hitting and then the back end the bullpen I think right now the brewers are doing it better than anybody else. Yeah, so like when they have the lead it's over So again like can the cubs beat the brewers of course they can they have the players to do it But they need to have some sort of like big Someone needs to take the game over right don't think the brewers need that to happen Yeah, I'll be fascinated Look the cubs they're going to be penciled in it as a wildcard team whether it's as the top wildcard or a team that's got to go on the road That's where they're going to end up and milwaki's going to be able to set their pitching rotation
So it'll go miss Then it could go Logan Henderson and then Harrison They'll figure it out from there The cubs like I'll be I'll be fascinated to watch tomorrow's game I want to see Gossman go against the brewers in milwaki He seems to have kind of rediscovered his stuff there I mean, I think he can be a little bit of a game changer Obviously the lineup I do think favors Chicago when we get to October not during the regular season because of the way the games played But we know the brewers bottom of baseball in terms of homers The cubs have four guys who have at least 20 two more guys that have 18 Milwaki's got two guys who have 20 and nobody else who has more than 17. What are you looking at? I was the first one to mention the Homer thing but they're third and run scored second Second OBP I wouldn't say that the offense swings the cubs way But I wouldn't you agree that the way we
The way oh, okay hold on I didn't even know this I'm fine out this in real time people Is this right? Playoffs first and runs first and OBP okay there you go We're talking on the two best teams in baseball right now offensively how they score their runs is very different Holy schnake we know based on the numbers oh particularly over the last few years the percentage of runs scored in October Viola most run Is much more substantial in October than it is during the rest of the season that's all I know I agree. I'm just shocked. I didn't know the cubs were running that hot on offense right now. Yeah Holy crap really really good and part of that is because of PCA Who over the weekend in Miami before he clubbed his 41st off of McGill on Monday became part of the cubs 40 home run club which is a pretty distinct group It hadn't happened since 2005 when former Marlon and cub Derek Lee
Hit that plateau I mean we're looking at one of the greatest Seasons in Chicago Cubs franchise history like we can stop the MVP talk for a second Let's just talk about where it is in the pantheon of one of the oldest franchises in the sport Okay, uh three things number one directly love him yeah Um didn't know he had the swipes like there's a big dude Oh, yeah, he was a and a great defensive first basement Great. Yeah, I mean that's insane to think he's like okay like a first base spin who it's tanks like you can sneak 20 out Maybe he gets 30 30 40s a different ballgame So okay shout out d the number two the MVP race is over Show hey done pitching for the year His offense has dragged behind PCAs so look I I've been a staunch Otani supporter because I do believe we set the pedestal into
crazy new heights with him Uh, but you and so someone's got to come snatch it from him No matter what and PCAs done that this year he's been so damn good as far as like the cubs All-time seasons. I mean that's more urlain than mine But when when you're watching PCA this year Uh, you feel like something specialist happening Uh-huh Incredible any made another ridiculous catch in Miami as well. Oh, yeah, when you're talking about dyrically you weren't talking about the steals You were talking about home runs, right? What At least you went 40 40. No, I didn't say you went 40 40. I said he went 40 home. Okay. That's what I was like He could no he had over a hundred career steals. He did not have 40 in a season. Sorry I was shot dude No great athlete great defensive first baseman could run for a guy his size, but not He's on Malibu or he was at some place to see him all the time That's why when you said 40 stolen bases. I said that's doesn't track with me and he's a massive dude. That's crazy
Yeah, as far as the cubs go and obviously I know go ahead you can throw the jokes whatever direction you want Uh, did not see Ernie Banks play So his back-to-back MVP's in the 50's do not register But for me we're talking about Rhino in 84 then obviously the Sammy years with Do come with an asterisk there's no question about it So PCA's year based on offense and defense To me, it's unparalleled. I mean, it's better than Rhino's year in in 84 We're just saying something because I don't take that lightly the year he had Which is insane To say him To say him that's where we are um All right Time right now for our blasts of the week. It's presented to you by mountain dew baha blast where we take a look at the 420 foot plus home runs from this past week It's always my favorite time because we get to see how many times Course field pops in there. So we'll start off with
Kyle Stowers. Oh, no, that's in Miami. Hmm PCA is not gonna get that one. No, not that one woo When you turn around on the ball like that, that means yeah, I got it. Yeah Go celebrate that was good Ivan her there we go. There's Colorado. We've on her era 443 I love it when we hit it. Yeah, that was not great to me By the way, they got to wear those on the road every time those are such a beautiful swing Yeah Just mash that thing not impressed Ben Rice at pet go for 444 the Moses Malone Well, fofo. Oh, that's big. You know, I think what it is for me Chris is going to dead center They never look as long as the ones you pull Good call even though it's deeper there. I understand that Oh, look who showed up Turn away 449 on this one for Ronald Akuni Jr
Oh That's a bomb what wait is it that made it a 3-1 game? I guess so yeah, what are we talking about then do what you got to do around the base pass? It's a big homer. Yeah woo That's a tank and hey your buddy Josh Bell on the south side 460 when he gets into him Trev He can I believe that's only as the second farthest homer in his career. He's got one that's 470 Plus Yeah, he's a big boy talking about a big boy and remember for this MLBC season keep a close eye on the 420 foot plus foot home runs at unlock your free Bob last Yeah Okay Chohe O'Conning was back in the lineup last night for the first time after missing four games Dodgers end up up ending the reds Um, it was just good to see Chohe back and then afterward he spoke to the media for the first time in quite some time Came out and said yeah, I'm shutting it down pitching wise for the year. How big a deal is this?
For many other teams it'd be the biggest deal ever but for the Dodgers We've mentioned on this show. I mean they they have the rotation they have Enough guys in the bullpen were like they can skirt by and and still be a very dominant team So I think it's the right call if you're trying to Make sure we talked about this have Chohe's bat. That's that that's gonna make a bigger difference Him if you're to say you get to pick one show Hey in the rotation But him not in the lineup or him in the lineup and not in the rotation I think every single Dodger fans say I want him in the lineup. So that's to me the big part of this I am just thankful because we can stop talking about it and stop guessing And we'll see you hopefully next year back on the game seven when he runs out to the bullpen And freaking puts his glove on Okay, now that I'd be good for favor. Yeah, that would be fun But I think it's good he just uh They got to get him right. I mean they're running out of time He just even last night he had a swing where he looked awkward Let's say he goes on a run and hits 12 homers to end the season still done
Yeah, I think it's over okay Don't you I think PCA sealed it I think it's done. Yeah, I mean yeah, I do I do I'm just I'm just playing like you know little devil's advocate here little yep Uh red socks of one five in a row They are only two back of the Yankees for the top wild card spot in the a all though really it's three because New York one the season series Anyway, Boston had an individual achievement over the weekend Chat a little one two home Swing in the mask talking about 101 One away to end it the red sock sweep the series. He picks up his four hundredth career save It means a lot to me it means a lot to me that was one of my personal goals for this season And when I look back Throughout my career the worst moments that I thought I wasn't able I wasn't going to be able to to get to these goal and and then Scott I was able to to do it today And of course the oldest Chapman four hundredth career save and you heard from him through an interpreter Closers over the last 30 years. Where does he rank?
You know, this is a you question. Okay, we got mo we got trev And then after that it all gets jumbled up for me. I would say like it's He's maybe next or like close with Kimberl Trying to think who else you put in there. I mean Billy Wagner is he in the last 30 years Yeah, right he just got into the Hall of Fame. So he's got to be right there. I would say something like that Like he's from third through fifth Is that okay? I've got him third because of the way he's bounced back Okay, like unfortunately Kimberl The way that his career is is That's that's that's very that's typical. I know it is I'm just saying that there are people that forget and I'm trying to make this point is that they forget how good he was like he in Chapman Chapman's over 14k's per nine Kimberls like mid 13 so it is right there Billy at Wagner. I think was slightly under 12
Kenley I think it's kind of in between there a little bit. So can we still doing it at his age? He's gonna get to 500 saves I know I know it's pretty remarkable. I think he got one yesterday, which is awesome Yeah, he's got I think so right. I think based on Chapman's resurgence. I would have him slightly ahead Of Kenley I would go 345 I think I'd go Chapman I think I'd go Chapman Kenley because of his longevity Kimberl Wagner and then Kimberl, but it is a tight four it is a tight three through six For me really tight what is K rod not he's not cracking anything. I don't think so. I don't think so
Pretty good pretty good career pretty incredible. What do you have 62 one year 437 total. Yeah, but I think he had 62 one season. Isn't that the record? Let me find this for you He had 62 in 2008 Yeah, let the league and let the league and saves three different times Dude when he came up in in 2002 he wasn't even the angels closer that was Troy Percival and K rod was coming out and just Throwing a heat and had that hook It was for it was really pretty good That's a good one. Where do you where do you put Chapman? I think the fact that he went three seasons where he just was kind of invisible in the save department Let's remember and now he has come back and still blowing cheese. It's pretty good Nick Paveira welcome back to San Diego their opening day starter made his first start since mid-April that happened on Monday tossed five shutout innings In the Padres win meanwhile Arizona a winner in extras in canned city So the debacks lead San Diego for the last wildcard by half game does Paveira's return to the rotation swing the pendulum toward the the Padres
Over the debacks. Yeah I think everything swings the pendulum over the debacks but the debacks keep finding ways to win Do like will they run in bullpen games Dalton fielis texting every second about the diamond bags bullpen So like it's just a weird thing. They're very similar to your guardians where they freaking find ways to win baseball games, dude They just do um It's nice for it's nice for the Padres um as far as you kind of like getting their rotation whole I guess again You bring in mice you bring in robby ray now you got paveira that's great for you I think more when you watch the podres. It's like We need the bottom of the order. They're kind of step it up more than anything um, but I still think the podres are a better team than the nine backs, but What do I know I do too and I can't wait for the final series that yeah, I think that's gonna be Incredible. Yeah, the playoffs will start early hopefully. Let's just have it be you know like a one game difference when we get to that weekend That could be sensational Yeah, I give the slight edge to the Padres, but really paveira's return if they're able to stretch him out and if he's it because he's pitched great in a podres uniform to me
It's got People like our buddy Ryan Cone thinking can we upset somebody in the first round If we have him back here Right you go Michael King Then you go paveira and then you go whoever's throwing best out of the for game three if you need it All of a sudden not bad Add it with that bullpen. Yeah, if some of your five give me five guys Give me five what innings. Oh, I think though. I think those guys could give you more than that who Michael King and Nick paveira Michael King sure Nick paveira like coming off elbow stuff give me five and get the hell out of there I'm not you think I'm letting that hang around hell no I think he could give you six. Okay, sure. It depends how those first five go. All right We got two more fun things still to come your way, but quick reminder that this episode is sponsored by T-Mobile
Baseball it's always been a game of inches now.
