1:00Right now and most likely into the near future, there's no way to know what every single college football team is spending like you can in the NFL or the MLB, whatever. But the athletic did a really, really good job reporting, anonymously finding behind the scenes a rough estimate to what each team is spending. And as you can see by this chart that is on your screen right now, Ohio State is the biggest spender spending an average or an estimate of between 49 and $54 million a year. Boston College is on the low end spending between 8 and 13 million a year as an estimate. Then you can see the cyclones. The fourth lowest would be the second lowest in the big 12. As we move this graph to be big 12 only where it is I was staying down there towards the bottom with Cincinnati as the lowest but they are right there in essentially the same average or at least the same ballpark as

2:00Arizona and Kansas. And then Oklahoma State and Houston aren't too far ahead. They are on the low end of the big 12 average. So what does this all say about where I've stayed is now and into the future. I don't think anybody is surprised when we see that Iowa State is towards the bottom of the powerful ranks and spending on their football roster. It has been an up-help battle and we know from our friend Brent Bloom and the last staff who did a ton of work into building Iowa State's NIL to what it is now and it's in house now. You can use the TV revenue to do so and Iowa State is doing enough to try and be competitive but it clearly is still not enough to be in that mid to upper tier of all of college football. Now I'm not going to talk today if it's realistic if that'll ever happen because I don't have those answers I don't have that power but I do want to talk about what Iowa State football can look like if they are forced to be in that clump of teams on that graph and we're gonna do it all

4:05that to go up with President David Cook someone who was worked at North Dakota state and he is aware of the importance of athletics for admissions for keeping people in the state of Iowa and having that money spent here so I anticipate that that spending will go up but there is an element of it too where T. J. Altsberger wants money too and he's gotten an increase in his N. I. L. for roster building this year and that's a real thing where you can look on this graph does Ole Miss really care that much about basketball does Notre Dame care about basketball does the University of Miami care that much about basketball for the most part no and almost all of these schools at the top sure they can care about basketball and they can put money towards it but if they're given the option they're choosing football no matter what and I don't think it's that simple at Iowa State and it is an uphill battle for for cook in the next athletic director that'll be hired here in the next couple of months but that's not exactly what we're gonna talk about because unless and Iowa State

5:08alum finds a fortune 500 company in the next year or two and is gonna give a lot of that back or strikes oil and gives a lot of that back Iowa State will be competing with the bottom to middle tier not just of college football but in the big 12 as well you can look at the big 12 here Texas Tech at the top is so far out of range of everybody else there towards the top of the entire sport and then it's a couple different clusters TCU BYU in Baylor as well as Arizona State are all kind of spending the same in that lower 20s upper teens to mid-20s range and then you've got your Utah West Virginia Colorado they're all spending in that it's about 17 to 20 mil range and then you go down the list UCF Houston and Oklahoma State are all about identical in that 15 to 20 range and then there's Kansas Arizona Iowa State all right around 13 to 15 and

6:09Cincinnati is not far off there and last so that is the hierarchy in the big 12 but that is not the big 12 standings or at least I don't think it'll be the big 12 standings TCU has been disappointing really ever since they made the national championship game Baylor always pays players they've done it since the start of NIL and they have made everyone aware they've been spending towards the top of the big 12 most of that time and haven't exactly backed it up with the results and then there's a team like Arizona who's third to last in the conference they won nine games last year and it was a great coaching job the point to all of this is that there's more than one way to win football games in the big 12 in college football spending money absolutely helps because tech BYU Arizona State Utah they're all in that upper echelon of the conference and a lot of that has to do with good coaching with good players good crowd

9:21strive to be towards the bottom but they should strive to see how much they can do with less resources than others because like I just said unless a massive CEO who has billions and billions and billions of dollars wants to come and fund Iowa State football like Cody Campbell has helped fund Texas Tech football I would state will have to do more with less and so far what this Roger Staff has shown me is that they can and there's no attitude about it that okay well we got to do it with less than everybody else whoa is us whoa is me I haven't seen that at all out of them if anything I saw them get on the job and go put their put their head and pound it against the ceiling for six weeks watching tape and finding players that fit not only their system but what they wanted to do from a toughness and mindset perspective and what they were able to do in a near impossible circumstance and put together a roster that we think is

10:24pretty good and proved to be pretty good against Iowa they've got a lot to prove still over the course of the season but large and part I think you can say that Rogers and Ricky Saccone has done a really good job with less in the more that they win the more that they'll get and the more that their players will want and those will be problems that will present itself down the road but in this current setup I would prefer if Iowa State wasn't fourth to last of all the power four teams in the country but if they could even move up 15 spots because look where Iowa is I was right there in the bottom part of the power force spending as well if Iowa State can be even just in that ballpark or jump right around where pit in central Florida and Minnesota are and they can have that much more money to be able to retain talent and also go and find some talent that is wanting to come to Iowa State then I don't know how you can

11:28put a ceiling on what the Rogers Air is able to do but at the end of the day money does win out it wins out a lot of the time not all the time coaching talent development fan support atmosphere weather all of those things can help you win football games you have to lean into the right things and I think as of right now based off of everything I've seen Jimmy Rogers and his staff are leaning into the right things and are saying the right things and are recruiting the right way to try and win football games in Ames Iowa it's not just one big donation that has to do it it can be done with years and years of developing talent and rolling that over into next year's roster and then the following roster and at that point based off of everything Rogers said yesterday in his press conference you'll get to the point where you can feel great about who you

12:29have at every part of your depth chart and I don't expect this I was a depth chart in the 2026 season to be perfect at every single spot because I don't know they didn't bring an 82 new players you're not going to hit on every single one of those but you would expect as this staff is together longer and is in this spot longer and is able to see what works next to each other then I think they will get sharper and sharper and the key at that point is you hope that the government can maybe step in and help get Iowa State a little more help but that's a topic for another day that's a summer topic but I thought this was interesting just to see where Iowa State stacks up against the big 12 and the rest of the power for if you have any comments be sure to leave them right here in Psycho and Finatic we'll be back on the Thursday we will preview Bowling Green a little bit more but for the most part we're gonna focus on the big 12 basketball schedule that will be released tomorrow the women at 10am in the
