CRUCIAL: Oklahoma State's TE Room Could Have MASSIVE Implications For Drew Mestemaker & Co.

About this episode

Oklahoma State's TE position hasn't had much to get excited about since basically 2016. Aside from Josiah Johnson's quick run in Stillwater the last big time Cowboy TE was Blake Jarwin. The days of a Brandon Pettigrew could finally be alive again at Oklahoma State with the help of several new additions including LSU transfer Donovan Green and the sleeper pick of Bodie Boydstun emerging. Eric Morris and Oklahoma State have seemingly rebuilt the strong DFW pipeline that helped make Mike Gundy so successful in his early years as head ball coach. Cowgirl basketball is in great hands, even if a couple are leaving.

It has been exactly an entire decade since Oklahoma State had an NFL level tied in, but all early signs seem to indicate that finally could change this year. You are a locked on Oklahoma State, your daily podcast on the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. Shout out to the big 12 every dayers. Welcome back to lock on Oklahoma State, your top stop for all things. Cowboy and Calgary related. My name is Cody Stovall. We get to slide right into this football tied in conversation. It not really being a prevalent position since Blake Jarwin left in 2016 to go be a Dallas Cowboy and eventually take over for Jason Witten. We did see Jolani Woods come as a quarterback leaves the tied in becoming all American and then go to the NFL.

We also had Josiah Johnson who probably could have been this level of dude if he'd gotten more targets, more film, etc. But now through Mestermaker has a tied in or a few tight ends to throw two that could be NFL level dudes. Everyone's going to continuously talk about Donovan green. So will we. This former consensus four star all American number one tied in in the country under armor all American went to Texas A&M at six foot four 240 pounds. He started immediately as a freshman started a handful of games, played in over 10 games, had almost 300 yards receiving, had a couple touchdowns then he has a massive injury has an ACL tear. And then he was rehabbing come in into 2024 season. Primarily was a special teamer. Then they have a transition period where they change coaches, change staffs. He goes to LSU. Why? Because they have Garrett Nussmire. And they typically use 12 13 personnel. So if you're a tied in, that's a perfect spot. But Nussmire didn't quite do what everyone thought he was going to do. Obviously coach Kelly didn't live up to expectations. And he didn't utilize tied ends like he had previously,

which is why Donovan green is likely a cowboy now him going from 240 to 165 pounds could indicate that he has the versatility to block well enough to become an offensive tackle. But that's not what he wants to do. He wants to continuously be that tied in that he was coming out of high school. That dude is freshman year at Texas A&M. An Oklahoma state might be the spot that allows him to showcase that once again. Then you have Bodie Boydston. Bodie might also be a potential NFL level guy who's the definition of a hidden gem by way of a unit Oklahoma OBA and Southwestern Oklahoma state. We did hire their tied in coach to be an assistant offensive line coach. So it seems as though Bodie had the capabilities to follow that coach to Oklahoma state. And we're happy to have the six foot five 240 pounder. This previous season at Swassu had 14 catches for 192 yards three touchdowns. He transitioned to tied in the year previous coming from quarterback where we recorded three catches for 49 yards. And the best of it is I got to reach out to some of the peeps down in

the needed Oklahoma. His conversion from 11 man to 8 man was probably the biggest disparagement in his recruiting. He was a shortstop a six foot five 220 pound shortstop that hit over 21 22 home runs in his last two years at OBA. But that transition from 11 man to 8 man which had nothing to do with him was probably one of the biggest limitations for him getting the recruiting that he deserved. Then he goes to Swassu and convert him to tied in. He has the cerebral side of the game to understand things at a completely different level. You know, I love when quarterbacks play defense because they typically see the field a little bit differently. Same concept is applicable for the tied in spot. Could he have kept getting bigger, stayed at LSU possibly becoming offensive tackle. Sure. But does that athlete that inner athlete in him still want to shine? Probably like that's what Donna McGreen is looking at. Now you get Bodie who has the capability to likely become one of those next NFL level dudes.

And then we got to talk about Oscar Hammond who unfortunately was banged up last year. So we didn't get to see him a lot. But this dude coming in at six foot three two and 40 pounds. If we're about production, this Collinsville Oklahoma product has it over 1,000 yards receiving as a tied in between this time at UCO down the road in Edmond, Oklahoma and of course at North Texas before coming to Oklahoma State. The beauty of Oscar is he decided that he wanted to come to Oklahoma State before his entire coaching staff, you know, joined the fold the very following season. So I don't think we've seen anything out of what we could potentially get out of Oscar Hammond. Then we had to, you know, kind of beefen up the position, go into the transfer portal. We go get Carson Cole out of Oregon State who a lot of people thought was going to play defense because he was a linebacker primarily coming out of high school. He goes to Oregon State. They decide, you know what, we're going to explore this tied in thing. But this strength was already off the charts before he went to Oregon State when they were contemplating whether he was going to play tied in, linebacker, whatever the case may be. He was already squatting 515, benching 275, dead

lifting 415 and had a 265 clean. So athleticism is there. The strength is there. Oh, and by the way, he was a track and field dude. He ran the 100 meter, the 400 meter, the long jump, the javelin, and he has a handful of tackles while at Oregon State. So I think whenever you're looking at that. And let's also talk about Luke Logan. Luke Logan is an individual that was playing a lot of positions in high school, went to Memphis this previous year as a tied in. Didn't get to, didn't get a lot of opportunities. So now he's coming to Oklahoma State. He has a lot of time. He has a lot of room to improve and a lot of room to grow. And what we're going to talk about another tied in that will be visiting Oklahoma State this weekend in second two. But I say all this to say. I think that you're getting the dawn of ingredients. You're getting the booties. You're getting the Luke Logan's because there's a sales pitch. And sales pitch is we're going to utilize tied ends. Everybody knows what we have on the outside. Everybody knows about why young Miles Coleman. I think you throw Justin Boeck into that conversation. You could throw Chris Barnes into that

conversation. Everybody knows about Caleb Hawkins, Katie Batman Jones. But what people do not know is whether the tied in position is going to be utilized at Oklahoma State because the better part of the last decade it hasn't been the only way you get these these these booties and these Donovan Greens of the world is if you have a clear and concise plan as to why they need to be at Oklahoma State and why their position is going to be utilized again. Because again, if you go back and look at Donovan Greens film from even Texas A&M, the dude wanted the football. Like he visibly showed a little bit of frustration at times when he would do things the right way and he would get the chip and he would get the five yard out and he'd be wide open and the quarterback would sail one way over his head. Donovan Green wants to be a difference maker. If he wanted to grow into a blocking tied end, he probably would have stayed at LSU. This is a big opportunity for Oklahoma State because you have to have that safety blanket. You have to have that guy that you can rely on not only in the goal line for blocking, but in the red zone to get touchdowns and short yardage scenarios.

And it seemed as though finally, Oklahoma State has the capability to operate with 12-13 personnel. You could easily put Donovan Green, Oscar Hammond, and Bodie on the field at the same time. And that is why I'm excited about Oklahoma State's tied-in room moving forward. We haven't seen this since 2016. If you take out your side Johnson, it's been a decade since we've had this level of talent and you're seeing some of the clips. Not only is it the physicality upticked, these dudes got hands. They got hands. They got athletic capabilities. And I think they have an offense that's going to be able to showcase mostly all of them. I'm Clea Butler, host of Lockdown Women's Basketball. And this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot, celebrating the work No Highlight Real can ever capture. All four number one seeds UConN, UCLA, Texas, and South Carolina have completely dominated the opening rounds of the NCAA. Tournament. UConN rolled with a 98-45 victory over Syracuse behind AZ-5 who had a 34-point

explosion while South Carolina has been led by Joyce Edwards coming up a 23-point game. UCLA leaned on Lauren Bats with a 35-point performance in an 87-68 win over Oklahoma State. And Texas advanced comfortably with a 40-point show from Madison Booker. And now we're headed to the sweet 16. These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on, the sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time. Mazda puts the same drive into every detail, wins to find the moment putting in the work that defines you. There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you. Hilton for this day. All right, segment two here. I don't have a due to crack, but we do get to talk about a bunch of juniors that'll be visiting Oklahoma State this weekend. And we're not going to break down all of them yet. Right. We're going to filter that in. But I do want to talk about in totality the fact that we're getting so many guys from the DFW area. Now this isn't going to be

completely off the radar because it's about relationships. And it's the same reason that I think we're kind of not hitting a lot of massive home runs in Oklahoma State recruiting in state recruiting at the moment. It's because Eric Morris had a lot of established relationships with a lot of these DFW dudes. So it's not a big surprise that we're getting a lot of Dallas Fort Worth level guys and Texans in general. They're going to be making their way up once again for a junior day at Oklahoma State. But it does accentuate the point that I think Eric Morris is so good at building relationships. Eric Morris is so good about unearthing some of the talent that not everybody is looking at. That once that kind of gets validated in the state of Oklahoma as well, that we'll see a decent size uptick from the Cowboys in recruiting. However, there are going to be some oakies that are going to be featured this weekend. So let's bring a couple of them fellers up. How about the running game? I think that Javion Jones Priests would be a phenomenal addition. But after that, you got to keep this thing rocking and rolling. I'm a big fan

of Elijah Matthews from Carl Albert who we do have some connections with. So if you're going to kind of build the in-state recruiting and establish those relationships with coaches, places like Carl Albert and Del City and Edmund Santa Fe might be really good places to start because those are places that Oklahoma State has historically done pretty well at. We already got some recruits coming in from O'Also. We got a couple of recruits coming in from Jinx. Perhaps that could be some other avenues of exploration. But you do have Lan and Griffith from Tuliana coming to make a visit this weekend. You got a ton of Texas dudes. And that's what we're going to get to. But you also have Dwayne Jones from Booker T. Washington. He's going to be there this upcoming weekend. You have brazen Williams from Mustang, Oklahoma. He'll be up there this weekend. And then the rest, primarily it's all Texas dudes. So Oklahoma State back in the day. This is how we used to recruit, which is why I'm not entirely mad at it. Do I want more

oakies? Yes. Do I want to experience that sliver that we got this previous season right before my gun. You got fired. We had the best recruiting class in the state of Oklahoma. We had all of the top guys in the state of Oklahoma committed to the Cowboys. Obviously, when you fire a coach, especially somebody of the stature of my gun. You are going to have some guys that take that the wrong way and they're going to view opportunities elsewhere. And that is precisely what happened. But that brief moment where we had Taj Overton. We had Katie Batman Jones. We had McLaughlin. When we had all of those guys lined out, it felt like this was a turning of the tide that Oklahoma state was going to start finally out recruiting OU for the top talent in the state of Oklahoma on a regular basis. And if you look at some of the OU commits right now, Brentville's took that to heart. Brentville's and their staff seemingly said, we're not going to let that happen again. And Eric Morris, a lot of his staff has relationships with these DFW. So you got almost 30 guys coming

and literally like 24 of them are going to be from the state of Texas. And maybe even like 20 of them are going to be from the DFW area. Where I do appreciate this is this is the building blocks of Oklahoma state. And my gun is beginning time less miles time. This is where we went. We didn't really recruit the state of Oklahoma all that heavily because we didn't have a lot of cash A built up. So where did we go and went to the DFW area? We would dip down into Houston occasionally. We dip over to East Texas, West Texas occasionally. And that was the building blocks of my gundies success at Oklahoma state. And I think that's exactly what Eric Morris is doing. The difference being my gundy was an oaky. So in the beginning of him having to go get all those DFW guys to build a roster was slightly concerning because you would think that an Oklahoma guy would have some Oklahoma connections for some Oklahoma dudes. But it took my gundy a little bit to kind of get that rocking and rolling before you're able to start grabbing the Germany Smith of the world. The four stars that everybody wants. It took some time to establish that. I don't think it's going to take Eric

Morris as much time even though he's not an Oklahoma native because as he mentioned relationships do in fact matter as unfortunately we see a couple of our Trotten true dudes leave Oklahoma state this previous season to jump in the transfer portal. It was primarily about relationships. So some of those guys Oklahoma state wanted them to stay. Rajmurthy, Eric Morris. There's a couple dudes that Oklahoma state really wanted to stay. But the relationships with the aid with the agents just were not worth the headache or the combative nature of negotiations. Eric Morris is so much about relationships. I'm okay with this. Do I do I love it? Not exactly. I loved owning the state of Oklahoma. But you could have the best class in the state of Oklahoma and still have to dip on over to the DFW area. Another important factor is there's a decent number of these guys that have several big 12 offers that you know are kind of waiting to see what Oklahoma state does this

upcoming season. But this is why this this junior day weekend is so big. They need to see the inner workings of it first. They need to see the guts right the foundation the brick and more the meat and taters call what you want to call it. They need to see the daily operation of Oklahoma state before they see how the season shakes out. There's probably going to be a little bit of a wait and see approach. But you have to kind of you know begin the relationships now and I'm insanely excited to see these guys hit still order because everything is different the lifting is different the plometrics are different the RSI quit twitch stuff is different the way that they do their strength and conditioning and their nutrition they're eating the way they conduct their meetings everything is light years different than at any point in past or at least the last 20 years for the most part. And these recruits need to see that. Oklahoma state does still carry a cache. Our facilities are still at the very very very top of the big 12 even without a bunch of renovations.

I mean heck if you go even look at our friends down the road. Oklahoma states facilities definitely are better than our brethren 71 miles south of us. So we have a lot of things going in our favor. We always talked about wide receivers and running backs being a plethora of options at Oklahoma because there is that expectation. And now we hear about the tied-in stuff all right so let's mix in another one of these individuals that will be here this upcoming weekend is from Melissa Texas. How would you not get excited about a potential six foot seven two hundred fifty pound tied-in name Wyatt Harry from Melissa Texas. And this is another one of those athletes that can do a multitude of things that has done a multitude of things. You know you'd probably like to see a little bit more of a nasty street out of Wyatt Harry but when you're six foot seven two fifty and you're coming from a emerging powerhouse like a Melissa well you know the development is going to

be there. The comprehension of X's and O's and spatial relations and where they should be all of that is already going to be up there. I think whenever you see a school like Melissa getting to the playoffs though you have to be able to depend on somebody like a Wyatt Harry to grab the guy next to next across from him. I know words are still hard for me and just shove his face into the turf or the dirt or the grass repeatedly and that may be the only thing this big body six seven two hundred fifty pound beast from Melissa Texas is missing but he won't be the only tied-in there'll be four tied-ins at least four visiting this weekend. So once again we opened up with this tied-in conversation because we've got some tight-ins coming in this weekend and they need to see that Oklahoma State is not a place to write off anymore as a tied-in. Oklahoma State traditionally has been a place where we convert guys from defensive end to tied-in or linebackers to a tied-in. We haven't been a true tied-in recruiting place in years even Josiah Johnson

we grabbed out of the portal. So I think these junior day kids coming in especially these four tied-ins coming in they need to see that Donovan Green is different, Bodie Boyznan is different Luke Logan, Oscar him and this group can be different. If that happens and we're able to showcase some of that this weekend then I would expect some of these DFW Texas tied-ins to start gravitating more more towards Oklahoma State because if we do anything comparable to what North Texas did from a yard's component we are going to get the top talent once again and I think the in-state guys are going to be crucial moving forward but this upcoming class being DFW dudes it kind of brings us back to the Mike Gundy roots and how he got this thing off the ground. So if you're looking for you know connecting of the dots there's there's some similarities between what Eric Morse is doing and what Mike Gunny did to get this place as successful as it was for so long.

in a moment away from the kids to feel like and your reward status to feel like thank you for being a hilton honors gold member enjoy your daily food and beverage credit and now that night cap in the lounge can feel like it matters where you stay with hilton honors earn the most valuable gold status faster and unlock benefits at over 9,000 locations worldwide hilton for this day cowgirl hoops did get absolute decimated by UCLA and I don't want to say it was to be expected but when you got an all-american six seven center that can operate up and down the floor and fast break scenarios that's already going to be problematic when your tallest player is realistically six two we had a couple six five girls we don't anymore um but you know they weren't major contributors this season and then you follow this news up with macy hewert entering the transfer portal not going to say that that is a killer move uh but it definitely hurts the heart

I think everybody could agree that macy hewert was likely to be a main contributor of this upcoming season because you know you have mica gray moving on you know what leaner jarardi provides you know what jaden wootin provides you don't have a hailey timber anymore so it seemed like automatic that she was going to slide in and macy hewert was going to fulfill that same role as a mica gray as a hailey timber so to see her enter the transfer portal is equal parts disappointing saddening call what you want to call it but it might open up for something big um we had speaking of bigs we had six five favor oana she just came here this previous year from overseas is she's in her in the transfer portal and she was in six foot fiber so we're down to one six foot five prospect left here's what i wanted to caveat with though if we're willing to let these these girls walk away it's probably because jacy hoey has a good indication on what she can bring in

right and that's not even counting addison ballinger right the five eleven sharp shooter that was an absolute savage averaging over sixteen points of game right it doesn't even factor her in to this equation it doesn't even factor braille impact another individual average over sixteen points of game who is the t a b c for a player of the year and letter team to a six type state title she's six foot two that's definitely going to be beneficial but if we're willing to let these girls go i think it's because jacy hoey knows she has something coming because the nil is not a problem it has been to some degree in the past but all indications i've heard that jace what's going to get more than enough nil this upcoming season like the last two seasons have been a little bit difficult but she's going to get more than enough potentially up in like the four maybe in five ish mill range uh it is a possibility or at least that seems to be something floated around and you have to have that right you did get any uh cabiti a six foot tour from bell

gym and and again braille impact six one six two so at first when i saw macy hoey are in on the portal i was like that's that's the disaster like after using ucla and then jacy hoey talking about one of the biggest reasons that ucla has been so successful because they kept the roster together for three years and then immediately we lose macy here it hurts and then to lose uh ona as well who at six to five you would have assumed what a better major contributor to this upcoming season but again i'm taking this with a grain of salt because we have the financial capability to keep these girls so the nil is probably not a major contributing factor here this is likely macy hoeyard sees the that there's somebody else coming in that that may very well take the spot that she's likely lined up for that's the only thing i can think of for us to allow somebody like macy hoeyard to bounce knowing that we have some series backing

behind jacy hoeyard right now it leads me to believe that that either something happened in the relationship or macy hoeyard just knows that she's not going to have a guaranteed spot next season so she's not going to have a guaranteed path to minutes next season that's that's the silver lining i'm hoping for that jacy hoeyard knows that she's got some money in the bank she already has some relationships built and she already has some individuals that could potentially be coming to okal mistake to get us over the top we're going to need another big because not only did betts that the six seven lady absolutely kill us but then they had another six six girls start stroking threes in the second half like that's when you knew yeah it was already a very deep hole that we were probably not even going to get out of but when there are other six six six seven girls start hitting threes it's like oh well what do we do here and then we would have boxed outs we just couldn't get rebounds we played decent ball we just got we got out physical we got out athleticed by UCLA

so i'm with jacy them keeping the same roster together for the most part for a few seasons is a major reason why they're on their way to potentially playing for a national title they're definitely good enough to win it um it's about learning moments last year jacy knew we had to efficient season rebounding so she went out and she got helly timber out of the team that out rebounded us um you get it a chola caught chola caught is going to be massive moving forward she progressed a ton this season but she ain't six six six seven so when you start playing these girls that are six six six six seven six eight again in the insulated tournament next year you're gonna have to be prepared for that so i think jacy white knows that you're going to get another big time shooter in here because if you're allowing macy hewer to leave that that means you probably already have something in the works and you know you got to get another big in here i think praisega reba is awesome and she's a great story she provides crucial minutes for the cowgirls but the combination of praisega reba and a chola caught is not going to beat you a game against

UCLA or south carolina it may be great in the big 12 it may be good enough for top three in the big 12 it may be even put us in contention to run for a big 12 title but we just saw that we don't have the size to match up with the UCLA's of the world but i think we have the coaching i think we have the nil the budget we have the staff we have the facilities so i think it's only just a matter of time anybody who uh before we get out of here make sure you go check out the every day or club ladies and gentlemen this is your way to stay tapped in 24-7 talk about march madness talk about some of the recruits look at some of the statistics milesbrow or things that nature and you get this show ad free so go get squared away today the every day or club locked on oklahoma state dot super cast dot com anybody who i reckon that's all we're going to have or this one right here as always you know i love you god bless go pokes thank you for tuning in to make this your first listen here in locked on oklahoma state you could be anywhere so happy you choose to be here do me
