About this episode

Locked On Oklahoma State - Daily Podcast On Oklahoma State Cowboys Football & Basketball is made possible by:

Oklahoma State's star QB Drew Mestemaker came into the season as a borderline Top 10 NFL draft projection by several outlets (not just my loud face hole) yet put up a regrettable performance against Tulsa. Dante Moore did exactly what he was supposed to do against Boise State while looking impressive doing it. Drew Mestemaker IS still that good, he everything around him holds up better we might just get to see the epic match up we all anticipated in the heat of Boone Pickens Stadium! Connor Knight from Night Vision-Media and Oklahoma State broadcast journalism school joins us to break down the QB battle, key's to a massive victory and the new age strength & conditioning changes.

This was supposed to be one of the biggest quarterback battles of the year with two potential top 10 top 15-ish level picks. Of course, the first game in Tulsa didn't necessarily show that. So now we get an opportunity to see it against a bona fide certified top 10 top 15 pick. And ladies and gentlemen, we have a friend to help us on the show today from night vision and media. Hunter night. How are we feeling today, brother, man? It's Friday. We got our orange on. I'm feeling pretty good, given the circumstances. How about yourself, sir? Yeah, one to 24 hours into kickoff. You know, I'm driving around campus Wednesday, all the tailgatings already set up. So you know, all the vibes are really high. You know, they just want to see a win over here. So everything is good this way. So this again was setting up in the off season to be one of the most epic quarterback battles in the country. And then after the week one, dud laid by Drew Mestemaker to some degree, it becomes a little bit more of a question now.

So there is still a way that we can turn this into the epic quarterback battle that it was supposed to be, but I don't know, color me crazy. I feel like we're probably going to have to get a little bit creative to provide enough time for Drew Mestemaker because I mean, let's do a tail of the tape, right? Both he and Dante Moore ride around that, but six foot four range, right? They're both right around that 215 pound range. Dante Moore had almost 3600 yards last year through Mestemaker at 4400 yards. I know it's at a different level. Dante Moore had like 30 passing touchdowns to 34 Drew Mestemakers. Interceptions was like 10 to 9, so almost dead even. I think Dante Moore was like 71% completions percentage. Drew Mestemaker was right around 69%. So there is a lot of commonality. Oh, and then EA sports, I think they gave Dante Moore like an 87, 86 overall speed. And they gave like an 84 to Drew Mestemaker. So they know that Mestee can at least get out there and get a little zesty if he can, you know, find an opening and make life interesting.

Whenever you're looking at the tail of the tape and these two guys, what do you think are some creative ways offensively that we can find a way to give to Mestemaker some time because at 6 foot four, 215 pounds, you need to step into your throws, right? You need a little bit of area of operation to work with. And we didn't give him that against Tulsa. You could tell that he was short stepping a lot of things. Maybe the nerves cause some of the high throws, but you know, good and darn well. Some of that is just not being able to set your feet properly to be able to get the full extension on the ball. There are some ways that you think Mestemaker can match Dante Moore in this game. And what are some ways we could potentially give him some more time in the pocket to try to do that because pushing it ball, pushing the ball down the field is something we did not show on film against Tulsa. So we have that going for us. You know, for one, just being at home, being at an environment, not that he's too familiar with yet, but being at home somewhere, he's the least comfortable with, will just help like settle him in. You know, getting a running game going early can definitely be a factor as well.

Just not letting him go out there be Superman. But I mean, Drew Mestemaker, I mean, he has the weapons. I just feel like a bad offensive line can give him some time. If that's sliding the protection certain ways, doing things you didn't do last week, just to give Oregon maybe a different look because I mean, we both know Oregon has all the talent in the world on their decent side of the ball. So I mean, I'm not saying you had that out physical them, but maybe out smarter. I'm not saying go out there doing trick plays and the fleeflickers like that, but maybe do some things with the protection to mix some things up at Oregon. Didn't see last week versus Tulsa. And you know, I think, you know, the physicality part of it, that's what I've been stressing all week that they're going to be bigger and stronger and faster and deeper. But we're a bunch of Oklahoma Texas boys, man. We should be able to fist fight them in a phone booth the same way we would jump on a rodeo ball. That is something that we should be able to bring to this game, but you mentioned adding different layers. I think that there is a fun little component here that isn't necessarily giving talks

about enough and that you already mentioned, it is a home game, right? When you travel on the road, you're limited to how many people you can take, right? Whether it be 65, 70, whatever the case may be. I think we took 77. 70. There you go. So you are limited on what you can do on the road as opposed to being at home. But naturally, if you're good enough to make the travel roster, that usually means you're going to play quite a darn bit. If you're not on the travel roster, you're not typically viewed as a piece that's going to utilize a lot. However, I want to hope that the depth chart we put out the other day was a little bit of gamesmanship because it was essentially the exact same depth chart that we put out against Tulsa, obviously minus the horrific injury to Jacob Sexton. And it being a home game, we're not going to have to have limitations on who can play, right? So like perfect example, Katie Batman Jones. He wasn't on the travel roster to go to Tulsa. So obviously we didn't get to get eyeballs on him. We did get to see trade page.

We did get to see Iowa Day. We also got to see Willie Mason from UCO as well. But I believe I think Mason had a fumble if I recall correctly. I could be wrong. Any but who? We got to see the other backs and it was it was concerning. So I'm not necessarily saying that we have to see Katie Batman Jones at this game. But if you are looking for different layers, different looks, different things that Oregon cannot necessarily even be prepared for, that would be one of them. And another thing is I do think that we need to have a little bit of fun in the backfield because it can't be Hawkins all darned. But we've got to have somebody back there that is helping in protection for Drew Mestemecker, even if it's just, you know, given the old shoulder chip before you get out to the flat, we're going to need some assistance for the offensive line. So maybe we get created, right? Maybe we go some ace formations, right? Double tied in, 12 per personnel. I don't think we'd go 13 personnel, but you know what? On those fourth and ones that we couldn't do against also, maybe that is the right key to get more tight ends involved, to get more linemen involved essentially, to get more

running backs involved. I mean, heck, you've got Justin Boock, six foot five, 230 pounds. Do you really want him, you know, creeping into help block? No, not necessarily. You would like that weapon down the field, but it's a creative wrinkle that we can add that can make life complicated for Oregon. You feel like that's a fair assessment. And what would you like to add to that? Because you played the game at a much higher level than I did for a long, longer than I did. So you've seen different iterations of what coordinators do try to do to play chess with the other team before the game starts. Yeah, you know, college football is so weird. You know, you can go on the road when we lose your in-state team Tulsa and then next week, you can play Oregon down to the wire. So I mean, all this stuff is really, you know, like you said, chess. Drew Messamekert, when you look at like the details from outside on of you, you see a team lose their in-state G5 team, then you see them, you know, 23 and a half point underdog.

You see, okay, they must just be bad. But that's just not the case. Like Oklahoma, like we know they have talent. They have first bonds. They have white, you know, Justin Boyack, 65 mismatch. You have the weapons. You have Caleb Hopkins, Messamekert. I got his projector to first round pit. So I mean, Oregon's going to, I think Oregon's going to probably try and play base early, see what Oklahoma state wants to do. And then I think you start seeing around a second position. What they really want to do is they want to blitz, they want to, how they really want to play it after that first position. So I think it is very important in this game. Oklahoma state starts fast, offense in defensively, because you don't want to, you know, defensively let Oregon start to get high. And then you're in a shootout with Oregon. I mean, I don't think Oklahoma state wants to be in that type of game. I think you're 100% right. And there are some things that do play into our advantage to some degree. One of them being that it's a morning game, right? Nobody can underestimate the fact that there is a travel component to some degree to this.

And sometimes when you get out on the road and you've traveled a couple thousand miles, essentially, it takes you a little bit to get in the rhythm, to get in the flow. So you're right. If we do start fast and we're able to make things interesting, a very, very early and make Oregon play catch up, will it be a big problem for them to try to play catch up? No, because you mentioned they have all the horses in the stable. You're not only run with Oklahoma state, but potentially maybe possibly run us down. But if you flip into reverse, right, if Oregon gets up 14, 17, three or something to that effect, it could be another long day for the Cowboys. So speaking of it being a potential long day, let's break into segment two here and talk about some of the potential ways that we as a team can sneak our way into a massive victory. What are the keys going to be? What what wrinkles can we add to make life chaotic? Four of the Oregon ducks, but before we do that, I have to remind the fun folks out here that if you're going to a game day, whether you're traveling or driving home after the game day,

you've got to stay energized. You've got to be ready to rock and roll and run through a brick wall. Five hour energy is here to help you start your day in your day. Stay engaged during the entire game from an energetic perspective. We need Oregon to feel every single fan, every ounce of energy that we're bringing to boon. So maybe kick it up a notch with some five hour energy. If you've got a sweet tooth like I definitely do, you know how tough it is to find a perfect free without all of the sugar. This is why cotton candy five hour energy brings the most nostalgic flavor back in a whole new way. Cotton candy five hour energy is here to help you reconnect with your younger days. This is that classic cotton candy taste that you remember, but with a tasty caffeine boost and zero sugar, it is quick, easy and it'll satisfy that sweet craving while keeping things very simplistic while you're on the go on the move or dialed into the game. I think a lot of us grew up with cotton candy, enjoying it at festivals and fairs and

things of that nature. It is that classic old school flavor that we all kind of yearn for. So get with this opportunity. It's a flavor that really brings that throwback. You're going to love how convenient it is. Obviously it's a small, horrible shot that you can grab wherever, whenever to get a little pick me up. It's become an absolute go to for everyone in the country to stay dialed in before, during and after big games. All right, brother, man, we can just slide right into segment two here. I do think that there are some creative ways that we can, you know, make life interesting for Oregon, whether it be blitzes for multiple layers or extra stunts and extra twist, right? We have to make things complicated. So I'll let you hammer on the defensive side of the ball on the offensive side of the ball. We did cover some of that, right? I do think that we need to add some components in the backfield to give to a messmaker a little bit time to help with chipping, to help with the offensive line, to help establish some pass plays down field. Like if we try to do what we did against Tulsa and just stay on the sidelines and stay on the line of scrimmage, they're going to, they're going to eat our lunch. So we've got to get Dremessmaker enough time to be able to launch the ball deep.

You mentioned it already earlier, we have to find a way to get the running game established. I would imagine what most teams do from a defensive perspective is they're going to try to shut down the running game first because that is what Tulsa was largely able to do outside of, you know, Caleb Hawkins in the ballgame. If that does become a component, then again, we have to be able to rely on Dremessmaker, Chris Barnes, wide young, Justin Boett, Terrence Lewis, to be able to stretch the field. I do think that we need to get more creative with the tight ends. I also think that we should probably maybe make some things interesting on special teams. Like perhaps you should send out a bunch of the starters, right? Kick off, punch something to that effect. So you send a message and show Oregon from the get go that we are here to match you in physicality, to beat you in physicality. You might be that's in a lot of other categories, but we're going to show up and we're going to punch you in the mouth from the very, very get go. We're going to try to turn the heat up as much as physically possible. The fan base is going to have to be a part of that.

So I think from offensive and special teams component, we've got an ability. I mean, heck, dude, we got a six foot five, 230 pound Australian punter that can roll right and kick, roll left and kick. And I'd imagine he's got some athleticism to him because a lot of those dudes grew up playing rugby, right? These are some extra wrinkles that I think we could add to this ballgame to at least make things more difficult for Oregon. Now you flip to the defensive side of the ball. You saw what happened. You saw how little push we got against Tulsa's offensive line. Coach Morris has already come out and said that we got to find ways to get back there because if you give first round NFL Braff pick four or five seconds to throw the ball, he's going to complete them, right? Like the wide receiver always has the advantage in the route tree and they always definitely have the advantage when the route, when the play breaks down, right? Because they're coming back to the ball and they've practiced it. You've got to get to the quarterback. How do we get to the quarterback corner? Because we couldn't against Tulsa.

Yeah, you got to just do stuff like twist, blitz and linebackers. Maybe even corner blitzers sometimes. I mean, he had 378 yards as we, if you don't get against respectable boys in state team. So if you don't play against him. Boys in state has a very good defensive backfield. They're known for having that component carry on my apologies. So if you don't get pressure on Dante Moore, he's going to, with all the receivers he has over there at his disposal, it's going to be a long day that the passers can't hit home. I mean versus Tulsa, you just see they struggled to get pressure. So I mean, this game, I don't know, you don't, you can't just play it straight up in your base and get pressure. You might have to get creative. Like if it's the linebackers, the safeties, I'm not saying what's everybody. I'm like using things like zone, which is on your in a zone sitting in the nickel, Mike blitz. You just had to get creators to just get Dante Moore out of his flow. You can't just let him sit back down, pick you apart all day. You nailed it. And again, going back to that component of it being a home game, which potentially adds

some extra wrinkles and layers that Oregon cannot be prepared for. You know, a name that, both of us heard a lot during fall camp was Marquise Williams. Obviously, he did not get to make the travel roster to Tulsa. I'd be really interested to see if Marquise gets in this ballgame because again, you go back and see what he did at Miami. There's a reason he played in so many ball games, right? He does, and he comes at six foot two over 200 pounds. That is somebody that I think we do need to see on the field to match the athleticism, the physicality of what the Oregon ducks bring to the fold because you already mentioned it. That what I'd receive record is nasty, right? Steven Stewart, DeCorean Moore, I mean, help McLellan just went through for 150 yards last week against Boise State, which we already mentioned. Arvisa Hooks is a disciplined secondary, right? Boise State is a disciplined secondary that prides themselves on keeping their secondary pieces more often than not. From OASU side, we saw last week, Kristen Baudnar, he had some nice plays.

He had some plays where you know, things could have been a little bit better. I think that the depth of the safety room is about to get tested, right? We talk about the heat component. I mean, we could we could do an entire segment on how crazy it is to hear your head coach say that we weren't prepared for the heat in the middle of Oklahoma. That's wild, but that is another key to the victory here. Like we have to embrace the fact that it is going to be hot as all get out. And the longer that the game goes on, the more problematic that could become. I mean, you look at Tulsa. Yeah, we had some dudes throwing up on the sidelines, but as far as like eyes going down with cramps, it was Tulsa. Like they had a bunch of dudes going down and I'm not saying that we were, you know, matriculating the ball down the field very successfully to begin with. But there was a couple of times, right? We'd hit like a seven eight yard pass and then they'd have a player go down with a cramp. And then we'd have to go stand on the sidelines for, you know, 90 seconds before we could restart

play. Being a rhythm tempo team, that was a bit of an issue, I think. Now we should have been able to overcome it. You know, I'd give some other things that are keys to victory. Their returner, Evan Stewart, former five star, all American, who is that good? If he gets the ball, he's going to be an issue. But he did have some problems with the special team's component when it went to the boys and the state ball game. We have to take advantage of that, right? I guess I've mentioned earlier, even if you got to put starters on the special teams to get down the field as fast as physically possible, we got to do it. I mean, you and I were talking a little bit off air about how Alabama was famous because they would put some of their five star wide receivers as gunners. I'm saying some Williams. Yeah. And it's like, you know, that's a good idea because you don't have to be an expert tackler. If you're the first guy down there, you can at least create some contain. So he can't bounce it outside. I think that is a layer that we have to get into.

You know, Gunnar Wilson was pretty close from a timing perspective, causing a foam recovery on that punt return from Tulsa last week. We need more of that, right? We need that to be timed up. Right. We need a couple turn of turnovers. That's scholar Cassidy's MO. Everywhere he's gone. Double in Christian Sam Houston and North Texas before here, their turnover margins were top 10, top 15, top 20, every stinking year. That is what he does. We did have that, you know, nice interception by ladenian against Tulsa, but we need more of that. Do I think we're going to run around picking Dante Moral Day every day? No, I don't. But we have to get creative. We have to add layers. We have to add wrinkles. But the bright side is, if they did overlook Tulsa, and they did spend the summer mentally and physically preparing for this big time Oregon matchup, now's a chance to put that on display, right? I think all of us would agree. You would easily take a Tulsa loss if it then equaled a top 10 Oregon W, right?

I think that's fair. I'd note a thing I wanted to mention. You talked about the Levena and kick. I think an underrated part of that that the normal fan doesn't understand. These guys are going to be eating pre-game meal around 8.38 a.m. to get ready for this ball game. Doing stuff that you wouldn't normally do, even pre-game meal that early, especially coming from the row team, that could definitely change up some routines. Because Oregon, I don't know what they usually play, what time they usually play, but the Levena, the Levena, and kick is nothing to play with. You're getting up a 7-6 in the morning to do walkthrough, stretch, eat pre-game meal, just to get ready for the Levena and kick. That can be a big on-the-vantage as well for Oakland State. Whenever you were at UAB, did you ever see some things like that cause issues, whether it be a morning game or the heat? Did you have games where some of those things were what derailed some of y'all success or

the other team's success? Did you physically see that when Rock and Roll and at UAB? None at all remember at the top of my head, but I remember I used to like the Levena games personally because we used to get it out the way and how to rest of that data to L.A. night time. I feel like for the home team is more fun compared to the row team. As long as you have fans that are going to be out there at the Levena, which Oklahoma State will have tomorrow, that game is going to be packed. I know that for a fact. It's going to be packed. Yeah, getting tickets for this one is not easy. It's by any stretch of the imagination and you could have maybe thought that after that Tulsa game that some of the excitement to come to the Oregon game would die down a little bit and it did a little bit, but it is still Oregon and they are still coming to Stillwater America and we did just have Alabama canceled their trip to Stillwater, Oklahoma. So this is a massive, massive matchup for Oklahoma State and I certainly expect the fans to be out there.

It's going to be hot as I'll get out. So stay hydrated and hopefully actually let's get to that in segment three because last week the heat was an issue for us. This week it needs to be a weapon for us. We need to find a way to turn the heat that Oregon is not going to be used to. Yes, I know that they practice today at Westmore High School. So they're going to be somewhat acclimated, but not enough to make a massive difference if we show up and we punch them in the mouth from the get go and the tip off. But hopefully we are more prepared for the heat because the strength and conditioning department is going to catch more heat if we are not. Alright, brother man, we will put a nice little quick style bow on this here.

Our strength coach is these catch some heat right now because we were not prepared for the heat. And it is an outlandish thing. You can sexually think that Oklahoma and Texas players in the middle of Oklahoma were not prepared for the heat against Tulsa, but Tulsa was, I don't know, one of the biggest differences they played outside every day. Maybe the the Sherman East Smith Center. It's amazing for a lot of things, but while you're preparing to get banked in the sun, may not be one of them. Surely that's something that will change this week. And so much so you've seen on social media, people are clamoring to bring Rob Glassback. And while Rob Glass is the goat of strength and conditioning, he was the only strength and conditioning coach in America to make $1.1 million. That's how good he was for over 21 plus years. He kind of came up with Gundie. But I think that there is something applicable here to being in the same conversation with Gundie in regards to not necessarily adapting to the NIL, Transyl-Portal Era. There's some components, I believe, with Rob Glass that were all about, you know, the

meat and taters getting massive muscle and weight on dudes, making people faster. But the plyometrics, right, the dexterity, the side to side, the lateral movement, the hip flexors and things of that nature, that is something that the new staff is far more focused on. Going back to your days at UAB, I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, they were kind of beginning that transition to go more towards this plyometrics, dexterity, you know, catapult, RSI, quick, twitch kind of information as opposed to just banging out white, slight crazy. What do you think that this is applicable? And do you think that the new strength coach is supposed to be catching this much flack for not being prepared? Yeah, the strength coach of UAB has survived three head coaches now. And I think the reason why is because of the stuff he does on with us. So he had a good mix of strength and condition and an ink and like the weight room stuff and the outside stuff. So I feel like a good mix of it was, okay, we're going to get stronger, bigger, we're

going to have creatine if you need it for those receivers and DBS if they really needed it. We're also going to do the stuff outside in the heat that we're going to condition, we're going to do speed training. Speed training is real different. Like it's not just straight conditioning. It's stuff like, you know, box jumps, hurdle jumps, like all this weird type of stuff that like regular fans wouldn't understand, but it's stuff that helps you on the field. So I mean, a good mix is what you really would like. And then at the SES level, you know, you get sort of smaller guys. So maybe a debt level, that's when you try to put more weight on guys, more straight weights instead of more to speed stuff. So it really varies where you are. But yeah, at the bigger level like where Oklahoma State is, you would want like a good mix, probably like a 60, 40 or 50, 50 type of deal. Well, and a couple things, you know, I feel like it's fair to mention, right? Again, the last few years being Oklahoma State fan, you have a lot of things just, you

know, go down and down and down and down and there's just, there's so many things that go into it. But you know, Rob Glass was in charge of a lot of things whenever, you know, my gundy was, I don't know, making the adjustments in the NIL world. And he had other things outside of football that potentially were, you know, being complicated for preparing on game days. And you know, Rob Glass was instrumental in keeping things afloat to some degree during that. But he still unfortunately was, you know, a part of the downfall and it's hard not to look at all of it in totality and say, okay, there's probably a decent number of issues that caused all of us some angst. But I also would like to point out that for everyone out there, you know, saying that we need to fire Brian Kiggins and bring back Rob Glass, correct me if I'm wrong, but he's still the boss, right? He's in charge of all of the strength coaches. So it's not like he's sitting at home eating Cheetos, hoping Oklahoma State does well.

He's essentially available, right? If Brian Kiggins wanted to walk up to the Galgrabba offices, right? And if he wanted to nail down the strength and conditioning capabilities of Rob Glass and say, listen, I'm good at this, I'm good at speed, I'm good at dexterity and plyometrics and lateral side to side movement, I'm good of all that. But I need to pack on 35 pounds on this dude, really quick. Rob Glass is going to give him the old school tools of the trade to get that. So as you mentioned, you want a decent blend. I do think it's kind of fair that Brian Kiggins is getting some heat for not having the team prepared for the heat. But on the other side of the coin, it's not like, you know, he doesn't have access to Rob Glass. It's not like Rob Glass is not still involved. He is. He's also got to remember replacing a goat, the goat, it's hard. It takes time. We need to give a little bit of grace, a little bit of leeway and we need to see what this game looks like because it hopefully will look significantly better.

And then people can see that there is a convergence of the Rob Glass model and then the Brian Kiggins model. What do you say before we get on out of here by the man? Last thing I got to what he said a lot of, I don't know a lot of people noticed. The shirt and the condition of the coach is really like the head coach at times, like the summer from, let's say May, June, July, leading up to fall camp, you're with the shirt and the condition and coach. Morning, you are even the head coach. You have your head coach, the position coaches. That's really when they take time with their family and go on vacations in the summer. So you're really with that shirt and the condition and coach, even from January, February, March before spring ball. So it's good to have a good shirt and the condition and coach that knows a good blend I would say. So yeah, that's really all I had on that part. Very fair brother, man. All right, like I said, Lance Friday, I got my orange on, I'm fired up, feeling good. We're not undefeated anymore like we were last week before the Tulsa game, but this is

an epic opportunity. Hopefully we get to see an epic quarterback battle. Hopefully we get to see some new wrinkles that Oregon was not capable of preparing for. Hopefully the heat is such a factor that we are so prepared for it that it shows up in the fourth quarter because they're deaths, they're skilled, they're speed, they're size, it's going to be an issue, but there's ways that we can kind of mitigate that and hopefully the strength and conditioning coaches are very well aware that that Tulsa performance can happen again. Give us a hand, please let the fine folks out here know how they can track you down and find you while you're still navigating classes, grad degree classes at Oklahoma State.
