Coach Riz and Daryl Ruiter preview Browns-Jaguars Week 1 matchup

We are presented to you by Consumer Tire and just to give you guys an idea of what you can expect from Lance and I here on YouTube this season. We're going to try and do two of these per week during normal weeks, try and get you an episode every Tuesday to review everything that happened in the previous week's game and then try and come back with a game preview for you specific to the upcoming opponent, relevant matchups, etc. on Thursdays. And then obviously when the schedule bounces around similar to Thursday night football in week four when the the Browns will play the Steelers on Thursday night will adjust accordingly but just kind of want to give you folks an idea what to expect from Lance and I. Lance will join me on our post game YouTube specials for Brown's road games and of course Andy Baskin will join us for I should say

1:07join me for Brown's home games down at Huntington Bankfield. Okay Lance week one is finally here Halleluja. We finally made it. But it's been a long time Darryl. No question about it my friend. It is in the calendar a little wonky this year with everything starting late. I always I'm still amazed the Browns won't play a home game until the final weekend in September, September 27th. But Labor Day is behind us week one is here the Jacksonville Jaguars are first up on the old schedule but before we jump into them real quick just want to look back on training camp real quick and maybe one or two things that stood out for each of us and I'll go first here real quick. Number one the running game I think I think really stood out Quinshine Judkins Dylan Samson, Raheem Rocket Sanders those three guys all looked good but also understanding that

2:07it should look good turning camp because not a lot of live tackling and in fact this year zero live tackling for the Browns and the second thing that really stood out for me was the two rookie receivers Denzel Boston and Casey Concepcion I think both were the most consistent day in and day out. So those are the two things that stood out to me how about you coach. Well I'm going to start with a piggyback on your first one I think the idea of the competitive 11 on 11s that we saw there was a lot of 11 on 11 work there's very little of you know we're going to work on air even when they work routes on everything is worked against the person a coach a player a pad something like that nature and they and there was a lot of physicality within not necessarily always in team but within their drills and I'm looking forward to seeing does that carry over into early in games and early in season you know that acclimation that was that was the first thing

3:08I noticed and then the idea that not we all talked about the receivers and I agree with you they were as advertised I heard you say the other day they really were they were outstanding the defense has a lot of outstanding first level guys the thing that I was really impressed with it was the attention to detail especially and special teams and it was you know we I've always watched it and once again I'm always learning as a coach you know a lot of times we'll put special teams at the beginning put special teams at the end they did it throughout practice every single day with individual group and full teamwork so I think that's a that's a phase of the game they're going to be really good at and it kind of just the attention to details what was with everything and special teams is where really focused on making sure that phase maybe they don't always win it but I don't think it'll cost some games this year because they work so hard on it yeah it just wouldn't be the start of a brown season if the head coach regardless of who it is didn't throw a little wrinkle at us when it came to quarterbacks and Todd Monkin welcome to the party on Monday he teased a potential

4:10tail in green package but also at the same time he said he's having three quarterbacks active on game day entirely too much so in reality the only way you could actually execute a tail in green package is if you made him the backup quarterback now personally I think that Todd Monkin's just messing with all of us right now he knows it's the most talked about subject in town he knows that if he throws that out there he gives Jacksonville little something something to think about but I don't know about you coach but I'm just kind of like I don't know how you could make him the backup quarterback when he got the least amount of meaningful reps and just a couple of days prior to that when asked about a potential tail in green package Monkin had said that it's too late to try and convert him into catching footballs as a wide receiver what did you make of what Monkin had to say on Monday well you know there I'm gonna look at it from a coaching sprague I think what they're saying is that

5:12everything's on the table because you got to see what the Jags are doing defensively inside the red zone or on third and short and does that value having a plus one run game and at I look at it this way he's six foot six he's two thirty he's a big heavy guy do you add an extra guy because now the tailback because it becomes a fullback because defensive sometimes will bring that seventh eighth guy down in the box that would be the only thing so just the idea of everything's open I don't think he'll be the I don't think he'll be the backup quarterback I don't think he'll be that guy for a simple reason you and I have watched they've gotten quality reps for those top three guys and they've done a really nice job of getting him work with his footwork and individual on his footwork and timing and group sessions and seven on seven but they did a lot of 11 on 11 and it was the top three guys that got all the work in 11 on 11 now down the road you know you can see that plus one run game just because of what defenses do not necessarily cuts tail and green but the skill set of what tail and bring brings brings to the red zone with that big body especially if you get a cold

6:15weather game or a game that's going to be a torrential downpours you know there's some things that tie into that as well but no I have you know the top two guys have been the top two guys all all camp and they've gotten the work and before he got her Dylan Gabriel's in that mix as well and he did some really good things that being said that's what's kind of exciting about the quarterback play in my opinion right because those guys those last two Dylan and tail and they got a lot better to all these guys got better with their footwork processing let's see if it carries over to live games because it didn't prove from the beginning of spring all the way through training camp well according to last year's results the browns are going to play the easiest schedule this year in the NFL they have the 30 second toughest schedule out of 32 and again that's based on last year's results for their opponents their underdogs right now and just about every game though this week going into Jacksonville they're depending which line you're looking at there are any where from a 7 1 1 2 and 8 1 1 2 point dog to the jaguars not a lot of respect for the

7:19browns and this team this year and obviously I think a lot of that has to do with the quarterback situation it has to do with Todd Munkin being a first time head coach at the age of 60 it has to do with the fact that the browns won eight games in the last two years but nothing to do with the fact that this roster is actually better than we've seen the last two years but still not a lot of love for the browns well thanks they healthy especially on defense side of the ball this is going to be a good football team they'll be in a ton of games regardless winner lose but they'll be this defensive first level at the guy say healthy are is really good now you know the you when you say those things that's the that's the reality so for me the past never means anything to what this 2026 season is and all those things you're saying that's exactly right and that's exactly why those numbers are there so as football coach you go and you say we're going to prove him right or prove him wrong but we're going to do one of the two it's up to us to kind of make that happen it's up to us to make the the Patriots kind of thing happen where you just go in week to week you try to win week one and the thing at excite you for me anyway is that the offense has been so stagnant

8:26for the last couple of years because it's system based offense and that doesn't make it wrong and you know you and I have talked about offense in the past part of the reason you know Kevin suffance he's offense struggles because they didn't have a lot of pieces and when you run a system based offense all the spokes in the wheel have to be really good not so much in this munkin offense that's why I think one of the reasons to Sean as a starter just because he knows more because he's a veteran but now you're finding matchups and you know if you think about Travis Hunter well who's going who's the other corners and you know if that if he won't be forced because of the system to work out Travis Hunter he can work that a quarterback can work other ways and the matchups on the defensive line there you know we'll talk about that later in the week but I just get excited because this is a match up to players based kind of offense and defense and the Browns if they can stay healthy they have proven guys on defense and there there is a they have to prove themselves but they are dramatically drastically athletically better on offense it doesn't mean success yet they got to go out and do it but upfront skill receivers uh you know

9:29Juddkins-Lotelty the athleticism of this offense is night and day compared last year so there's room for there's room for excitement because of the the players they have especially if they can stay healthy well and uh one of the the keys for them and this isn't just offense or defense specifics is actually both sides of the ball they got to win on first down right you you can't play behind the sticks and have a second and long with regularity even though we listen I mean it it happens all the time right you're going to deal with second and third and longs uh just to through the the natural course of a game but you can't make that a regular habit and then defensively you can't give up the big plays uh the big chunk plays on first down as well right you want to force them into those uh you know second and long and third and long situations well yeah especially for this Brown team so you have a you let's start on the offense about side of the ball they're very very young and they have they have a quarterback who's either hasn't played well in a long time or a guy's second year guy still trying to learn the system and get up to speed so what you have to

10:31do is you you have to put yourself in manageable second and under five and what that does now you get to dictate what you do to the defense because you can run our pass when this when a defense gets to pin their ears back and be exact with their coverages and mix and match and bring overload and blitzes and all these things that defensive like to do well they can't do it if it's second five because you got to play base defense because you got to stop the run as well and that's when the big plays happen that's why kc conception is important that's why some of these these pieces they've had make it very important because now you can win on first down and maybe you can create some explosive because you have you've created some uh indecision on the defense and then you go to the defense of side of the ball if the one thing that you have to see is can they stop the run and if they can stop the run on first down and and get the second eight plus second you know third and eight now you turn these pass rushers loose and they don't have miles Garrett but I think Mason Graham is in much uh he's in physically good shape. Malik Collins looks like a shot. I've gone looks like yes fresh legs some of these other guys you know and they're gonna do some they're gonna do some

11:33different stuff with uh you know Root and Burgh as a defensive coordinator but you got two of the corners that can play man so maybe you have to bring pressure because you don't have miles but you can't do any of these adjustments unless you win on first down so obviously all teams are talking about winning on first down but if this Browns team is going to surprise this year which they can because they have some talent it comes down to winning first down for me because then they get to kind of use that talent that they've they've acquired and especially defensively that has been proven to be pretty good. It's Darryl Ryder joined by coach Lance Ryzen as we begin our previews for respective games throughout the upcoming season of course the Browns have the Jacksonville Jaguars on the docket Sunday in Florida all right all right coach I I got to ask you about two words that I have been hearing from coaches coordinators position coaches assistant coaches interns coffee getters the equipment staff the grounds crew the janitors

12:38complimentary football I have I have a vague I you know I'm pretty clear I deal what they mean when they're talking about playing complimentary football but I want you to give me the coach Riz break down in the true definition the coaching definition of complimentary football going beyond just hey special teams don't screw up so royally that you put your offense in a hole hey offense can you do more than just go three and out so you don't completely gas your defense and then defense can you I don't know get off the field in relatively good position for special teams to go out there and maybe flip the field and you know give your not either put you know your defense give them a you know nice hold the work with by you know pin in the opposing offense back or you know given your own offense some pretty good field position give me

13:39the real to the real of the the nonsense that we hear and I say that tongue in cheek about complimentary football and playing it on a weekly basis well you get a lot of things like the the service level stuff that we all hear so there's another couple terms right hidden yardage and protecting your your strongest unit is something that you know my dad taught me so I'm this unit with or without miles Garrett because of the experience the defense the defensive unit is still the best unit on this team of the three phases so you start the year off by saying all right we have to make sure at all costs we protect the defense it doesn't mean you don't take shots down field it just means in certain situations with certain matchups that are in your favor maybe run the ball in some passing situations or you do things that don't cause short fields for the defense so let's just give you a complimentary flip on how this browns team can do this year with and approved offense because really that's what the offense and special teams really hurt the defense in their part last year so let's say the jaguars kick off to the browns so many times

14:41the browns last year would get the ball and they would go three and out and when you go three and out you don't flip the field so now the you know the jags get they return the punt they get it to the 40 yard line well now the defense only has to protect six yards you know they only have to protect 60 so the offense only has to go 20 30 yards to be in field goal range so you have to play complimentary football it starts with the offense so if they get the if they get the ball they got to get a couple first downs it doesn't mean they have to score all the time but now you're playing complimentary football now core Bjorkas he's got to do his job put him inside the 10 yard line now that offense has to go 90 yards now sometimes they'll go good drives but you're assuming complimentary wise that you're going to be able to hold those guys get them a three and out now they have to punt now you've created a short field for your offense now how do you create that short field where you've pinned them back right you got a three and out with your best group because you protected them because I'm maybe on third nine you ran the ball because we got a couple first downs and we're going to punt it because we're going to trust our defense now you went out and get

15:42a case he conception and he gets you a 17 to 25 yard punt return now the balls on the other side of the 50 now you're worst unit right now right it without question going in just because it's on proven as your offensive unit now that offensive unit only has to go 10 to 15 yards you get three points now they built some momentum maybe they get a little they get you know they start to you know the defense has to take chances because they're already in the hole and maybe you create an explosive because you have better skill players right and then you put you know whatever it is you end every drive in a kick you're either kicking a field goal kick an extra point or you're punting it with the idea that you're never giving that offense because the only way that you feel is that if you give the offense the opposing offense a short field that's the only way they can consistently score against that defense if you consistently make them go 80 plus yards it's going to be hard to do at the brown stay healthy now that's your thought process of what complimentary football but if you think about what last year they they didn't punt they didn't cover well they didn't do all these things so they never got to play complimentary football that the offense went three

16:44and out so it's the idea Darrell that you're going to protect this defense you're gonna try to get first down so you could always flip the field you end every drive in a kick you you create short fields for your offense get them a little success build a little confidence and then they get it going because they're building confidence and then obviously things get rolling right momentum starts to go that's what complimentary football is all tying in with each other with the idea that hey we got to make sure the end result is that other team cannot go 80 plus yards five four five times against this defense and if they do then you're not going to win anyway because that's your best unit all right one one big note that actually happened just before we sat down to record this uh Baker Mayfield who the Browns will see next week and I know Trevor Lawrence first up got to get through him we're gonna we're gonna talk about him that Jacksonville offense and obviously that Jaguar defense and uh you know Travis Hunter and where we gonna see him uh on the football field

17:47because obviously he was the centerpiece of a big trade between these two teams last year but Baker Mayfield got a three year 165 million dollar contract today the Buckingers who say it's the largest in franchise history I'm guessing by annual value you're talking 55 million dollars a year yeah so Baker got paid just in time to uh play the Browns in week two well you know I you know I didn't really I wasn't with you I wasn't covering the Browns like I am now when Baker was here I just know I had him as my number one quarterback in 18 uh you know I I was wrong I kind of wrong on Josh Allen I was really wrong on Lamar Jackson so I had Baker because I loved his competitiveness now whatever happened that it's kind of a you know the thing that happened in Cleveland for me is that they just didn't win enough and when you don't win enough bad things happen and uh all the whatever you want to look at it it really comes down to that he's not here because the Browns couldn't win and they didn't think they could win enough with them whatever reason uh but I'll tell you what I'm not I don't root against uh Baker Mayfield that he's a kind of the guy that I I remember trying to

18:47get this Browns organization going so uh he's one of those guys that when he leaves your team or leaves the city you know I obviously you don't root against so uh root for him next you know in two weeks but he's a guy that I don't root against at all um for some of the success he had here in Cleveland and it was just uh it didn't end well for everybody in that situation yeah and uh I guess we just can't uh we're not going to be able to talk about the potential return of Baker Mayfield next off season he will not be a free agent he's staying in Tampa back well you don't have to talk about him going to the Steelers that's that's important too because you know that would have been something we had to that you and I would have been talking about a whole bunch so as much as you maybe thought he was going to come here or whatever it is at least we don't have to talk about him going to the Steelers well and he can play the fighting Falcons the fans he's there uh that's right at uh NFC South Division are you close at and hopefully that's where his anger goes right there he shouldn't be angry at all of us you know you could just play average against us uh you know and beat the Falcons down we'll talk about it next week but no he's made it very clear this one has been circled on his
