But let's get into it. Last night. Yeah. Last night I dreamt of San Pedro. Last night. Last night, Jesus. Last night. Can you think of a third? Ah. Last night. No. You got one last night.

7:30Last night, a DJ saved my life. Oh, Sam. I was Sam. Sam came through with the assist. Sammy Boy. That's how the game is played. Last night, I'm watching the Yankees and you said it rich. The only run that could score was a sacrifice fly against the Mariners. Cal Raleigh, who was like, over the season, comes up in a big situation, walks off the Yankees. But I'm sitting there watching the whole game, right? And throughout the game, the ABS system was put to use, bro. Yankees were five for five. Did you see that? Like, it was put to use. And it was like a grain of rice, as they say. They were getting it by this much, not this much, this much. Calls were turned over. I'm sitting there like, man, I don't know how I feel about this. Because it really could change the outcome of a game. Well, yesterday, Dan Byer brought up an umpire that started looked a little foolish. And yesterday, it was even worse for him, CB Buckner.

8:32CB Buckner is not having a good week. This guy is like, it's missing inside, outside. It's to the point now, inside, outside, come around. It's to the point now where some people are just looking a little foolish. Right. And that's not the point. It wasn't created to show up an umpire. It was created to get it right. They're calling them D minus Buckner now. Oh, not CB Buckner. D minus. I like that. I like that. I like that. It's just, you know, and you can see the look on his face too. There's a level of like embarrassment. I believe he rung up Trevor's story on a check swing without checking with the first phase umpire simply out of spite in my mind. Like, I feel like it was, there's like a spite level to this as well. I find it interesting. We talked about the theatrics of it. I get it. I'm not one of those haters. Let's make it very clear. I'm just one of those like, I don't know how I feel about it yet sort of guys. Right.

9:33Because I'm not used to the strategies involved like, man, that could have been a strikeout. But now he gets another chance and oh, wow, he hit a home run. Like, that would have happened if they didn't turn it over. Like, wow, that's crazy. So I'm sitting here just like pacing around my living room because the Yankees challenge five calls. Five for five. I'm like, dang, this is wild. And we're all experiencing this together. Unless you watch minor league baseball, right? We're all experiencing this together in the big leagues. So I'm sitting there and my girlfriend who watches casually. I mean, she watches me watching it. That's what she does. She watches me watching while scrolling on her phone. She sees me pacing around like scratching my nog and about it. Yes, it was March 30th. Relax. Relax. I don't get it. No, you have 159 games left. Like, you're pacing around. You're pacing around like it's postseason baseball. You're pacing around the March 30th and get my steps in, bro. Why? You don't do that? You cleaning your counters.

10:33I was seeing mirrors at 9500 steps. I wanted to get 500 more in my living room. Relax. It's March. Why the most hyper guy on the planet? We're talking meter relax. Relax. The guy who can't sit still for three seconds. But the stakes are low. Bro, I'm watching the game. I'm walking around a living room. You don't do that. I'm the only guy. I mean, you got to lay there and sit there the whole time. So anyway, I'm watching the game. It's a nail-biter. Five calls. I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about the ABS system. I think much like a lot of people. And my girlfriend, because again, she's a casual fan. She doesn't carry their way. She's like, why do they even have umpires? Like, what's the point then? And I can't think of one logical reason other than... ...and to move the game along? You know, it's always great to watch sometimes. Not only baseball. Any sport or something with someone that doesn't know anything about it. Because sometimes they will actually pose. Yeah. Really interesting questions. Like, why do they do that? And you're like, what?

11:33I don't know. I really don't know. Hey, why do they? Why do referees do this? Hey, what are the coaches? You know, like, I think I had an ex-ass me once. They were like, why did baseball managers wear uniforms? Like, they're on the team. I'm like, you know what? So I'm like... Tradition. I'm trying to explain, you know, the human element. She's like, yeah, but if they have the ability to get it right, what's the point? But they're like the challenges of an element, aren't they? Yeah. But, you know, human element, old school guys. You know, home pirates need jobs too. Next question. So I challenge you, Fox Sports Radio Nation. I do. Everybody. Can anyone give me a serious answer? Because I need to know. I'm like, Mark Anthony. I need to know for when my daughter slides into the kitchen. Ask me, hey, dad, if they have automatic balls of strikes, why do they have an upper? I need an answer to explain to someone else. The guy at the barbershop. Hey. Why don't they even have up buyers, man, if they got the automatic ball strike system? Can anyone give me a logical answer other than, well, you know,

12:35the human element, which could be challenged or, you know, to move the game along. And you know what's scary about that, Rich? I forget who was saying it recently, but like, oh, it's micro, micro of dirty jobs. I mean, that guy was right with all his blue collar stuff. He was saying those are the jobs that are safe. He's absolutely right. Because everything else is unnecessary. Like Rich and I, we also host a music channel, right? On Series XM. Do they need us? Don't say that alone. No, but it's the truth. Do they need me to say, hey, here's Metallica? Hey, by the way, here's God smack. But what do I do? I keep it moving, right? To move it along. And I really think that's the only real use of an umpire right now to keep it moving, to move it along. But you're also the narrator. You, you are part of the, the living organism, which, which for like a home played umpire, there's more than, there's more to the game situation than just calling balls and strikes. We're delaying the inevitable.

13:36It's as clear as the nose on my face. It really is. There's no logical explanation as to why we just don't go with the ABS system. Unless there's a, it's going to delay the game. And they're proving that it's not really. It's pretty automatic. It's hydromatic. Well, I said it yesterday. I, I compared it slightly to self checkout at a supermarket where you're going to opt for self checkout. But you're like, oh, look, there's a couple, you know, a couple of people in their retirement jobs. I don't want, I don't want Bob and, you know, Bob and Cindy's jobs to go away. They can do checkout. Well, you needed for alcohol, right? Alcohol. Yeah. So you need for a, for a play at the plate. Are you suggesting that an, um, a buyer, like sits in, in a chair, off to the side. And then when the balls in play, he ends up, he would then call the home plate plate. Play. I could see that. But you, you don't need all of those. I don't mind him standing. I don't mind him standing there just for the illusion. Yeah. Like I feel the umpire. Like some sort of someone in charge out there. How about they have a gate like in rodeo?

14:37And then when the balls in play, the gate busts open and the umpire runs out. Yes. Now you're talking. Yeah. That's some chevada banana stuff, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There are theatrics. There's things involved. I get it. There's a transition going on. Did anybody get trampled? But Mike Rowe recently said publicly, and Richie already said it. Like the only jobs that are really safe are trade jobs. You know, everyone's going to need a plumber and electrician of sorts. Like those are the jobs that are really going to, uh, means something in the future. They're, they're not going away. So when she's asking me, when the casual fan, my girlfriend is asking me, well, then why do you have umpires? What's the point? I don't have a real answer. So I'm asking for help. Does anyone have the answer? You know, it's like our video guy spot. There are sometimes, when we'll ask him a question. And we got very used to him rudely saying, Google it. Google it. Should I chat GPT this? Google it. Should I chat GPT? And, you know what? No, don't.

15:37Don't be honest though. Sam, let's use our brains. Sam, there are times. I know Sam, you're very anti this stuff. I mean, when I Google something, it's already using AI. So it is. I'm already involved in it. You know, it's like, uh, it's like the old time DJ. When you guys all started in radio, remember the old time DJ that was like, yeah, I don't want to play CDs or a computer. I want to play records. And it's like, yeah, it's not going to last my buddy. It's not going to last. And by the way, I found the list on the New York Post two days ago. Yeah. So I'm going to talk to you guys about this article about the jobs that are most exposed to AI that are going to be replaced. What's a job? A job. A job. A job talking. A web and digital designers. Web developers. Anything to do with databases, computer programmers, data scientists, all this stuff is going away. However though, even if you're using ABS and if you're using AI, you still need a human quality checker. That's fine. You need like somebody, like, let's say that you work in an official.

16:37So you work in some like, what do you call it? Those was warehouses. They're building like these data, data farms stuff. You still need like one person who is like growing a long silver beard to like go through with a list and check things off. Make sure everything's going as court plan. But it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. As lifelong fans, we've accepted the new system. We're like, all right, cool. All right. Yeah. It's been in development for years now. All right. Cool. So the answer is to why we have a whole plate umpire then. So I posed a question of Rich, maybe you should call an AI it. And while you do that, Marin Boone spoke about it recently too. And he was a guy that was completely against it at first. And much like it's sort of growing on him. Take a listen. I've definitely moved a little more in favor. In part, we've been good at it the first four things. I still think it's a little bit odd. So I'm still getting my opinion on it, which in the end now doesn't really matter. You know, it's like, you know, I kind of switched to this winter when we started really having zooms and stuff with coaches

17:39and people in our office to kind of go through strategies and learn about what we've learned about this to this point. Once I knew it was a reality, I shifted to kind of how do we exploit this and be the best we can be at this. That's another layer that a lot of us haven't really explored. We thought about it. Have you really explored like the best counts to challenge to put yourself in a better hitting situation? Oh, without a doubt. Like they have you figured out like, is it common knowledge? They as to when and when not do it. They've already talked about this. I've heard people and I've thought about it myself. Sometimes the first pitch of it at bat, they say when you analyze what what proceeds, not proceeds, what comes after that would be what proceeds is before. Let me use my head. Receives is your headline. So that's not how dare you. Well, how about what comes after? What follows? What follows? When you look at batting average in percentages,

18:40when you start 1 and 0 versus 0 and 1, drastically different. So they're saying in the beginning of account, if the first pitch is a ball, what 1 0 is? Right. Way different than the whole outcome of that. It's not just save it for 3 2 runners on base, bottom of the 7th. Aaron Boone even talked about that in the beginning of the season where. Have the players use it? Yeah, all the players have to be up on that. And some players are going to be better than others. But you know, there's so much strategy involved here that I am having a hard time figuring out like, well, why do we need umpires? Are we just, are we just delaying it? Dan Byer. I mean, to your point about the optics of having somebody there on a bunch, on whether it's fair, fall right in front of the catcher, you're going to need that certain point of view that you would like on an instant call. Any call can be reviewed and changed. But I think that that would be a reason why you would have an umpire in that spot, whether they're calling balls or strikes, would be separate of it, but you still would probably need a person at that spot for those sort of plays.

19:40Bunst on the line, fair, foul, did it, you know. That's that's a really fair answer. That's a good answer. I mean, there's going to be a home plate umpire on hand. It's just a matter of will they call or will that be different? Like maybe there's just a field umpire and maybe there's two umpires instead of one. Yeah. You know, like, I don't know. Cause I think that people would people think like let's get rid of the home plate umpire they just don't want anybody there. Like what's but you're going to need someone for that base to at least record it there. So why are there your models that just call balls and strikes as well? DB, I'm with you because Rich brought this up. I'll give credit to my guy here, to my left. Rich Davis. Rich Davis. I've never heard you do that before. I know. This is rare. I'm going to sit back and take it. I'm not hating on the ABS system. Let's get it right. But so many of these calls that they are challenging that they're missing are so on the edge of the strike zone. Like like I'm talking Greg Greg Maddox just right there hitting the corners but by this much there's only been a few calls

20:42where they were like drastically off. Like only a few. All the ones that they've that have challenged and they've been wrong about are so close that it's like they could have been a strike. If I if it was damn buyer, I apologize. I talked to someone about this. You showed me that chart. Yeah. No, the chart of the challenge call so far. There were only two obvious ones where there was a ball right down the middle that they called a ball. Yeah. So for something like that, there was like a challenge there. There was a low and outside one. But most of the balls that have been challenged good and bad like overturned or not are like literally. Like you know when you see a spray chart of shots in the NBA, the spray chart of ball. It was literally around the square except two exceptions. Sure. And with that said, then you're really taking away the intricacies of an umpire strike zone. Someone was saying how Greg Maddox fighting of the, you know, don't you like the human element of the, the managers and umpires fight. There was a there was a manager yesterday. It was at the twins where he was arguing. And the announcer was like, you can't argue umpire. You can't argue robots. Well, that's another reason you need them to handle the in-person disputes.

21:43Robots says it's a strike. But based on what I'll say with that chart, someone was saying like a guy like Greg Maddox would strategically work parts of the zone to get the call later in the game and slowly work around the zone. Right. That's over. And then the other layer too is we all got little kids. When does this start? So you use umpires until you get to the big. So like it's not like little league and pony ball and high school and college. Are they going to have ABS? No way. So baseball. They say no way. But I bet you it's it's probably going to be even more simple to figure out how to do this in the future. You think all of a sudden team sideline team sideline team sideline is going to get new new equipment. It'll be a stupid app that you can have in your phone and in a year and a half. The post seasons are are ruled differently than the regular season. We don't have right field and left field line umpires during the regular season. So what that tells me is that makes league baseball with whatever they want to do with the umpires association. But if you wanted to keep down costs and only pay three guys they already do it because if it's if it's that important

22:44for the post season where you need a guy down right and you need a guy down left. Then you probably should have them there in the regular season as well. It's not like the NFL adds three more guys in the playoffs or the NBA adds another official in the post season. But for whatever reason major league baseball does it that way. But yeah, so I I can see them subtracting if they ever needed to because if you look at the post season it doesn't matter on what they and they change it anyway for the post season. And by a really really interesting. I find this spray chart. Well, that was a problem with Buckner by the way because he had one inside one outside. What is it? But that's a size of Ohio. I want to try to find that picture though because it really is like you know what something is like well it wasn't designed for that. But that's what people are using it for. I feel like again most of the calls that were overturned or not are within inches of the of that square the case on only two or three so far the season are like wow that was a bad call. And I think it was designed for the bad call when it's you know

23:46when it's like oh three and one ball four and it's like note nicked it by like like a greater right. A grain of rice like is that was that what is designed for to get it right. Like in football when the shoe is like right on the white line. Yeah, it's it's been a fun sort of transition to be a part of to watch. Hey, by the way, Rich and I share something in common. Our very first paying jobs were little league umpires. Little league umpires. So not hating on the umpires just speculating on. Hey, if we have the ability to get it right. Give me a logical answer as to why there's a home played umpire. I modeled because we're taking it slow. Is that really it? Is that is that the real true? I mean, it's like it's a slow transition. By the way, I modeled my little league umpiring after Leslie Nielsen and they could gun. Yeah. By the way, what was it? Like $15 a game behind home play. $20 $10 in the field. I think is what I started out. He was 20 behind home play 10 or 15 in the field. I am tired little league for a good two three years. There was a great, great learning experience.

24:47You know, these guys under are under a lot of pressure. It's not meant to embarrass them. We established that yesterday is to get it right. But what's the point? What's the point of keeping them around if we have the ability. To get it right. In a really decent amount of time. It's a great question. So we'll get to that. Next right here. Kevin Enrich. I'm like, well, you can have like a field official, like a field umpire, one umpire. Do you really need the home played umpire? If we have the ability to get the calls right, are we doing it for the theatrics of it? Are we doing it to keep the game moving? Because you know, the umpire is going to get some wrong. I think in the Yankee game last night, and again, that's the one I was watching. So feel free to represent your team or whatever. 87799 on Fox. The Yankees Challenge five calls. They were five for five, right? There's a whole other stat that we're going to have to figure out too. Like, yo, how good is your team at getting these calls right versus the umpires? It's almost like, how's your team on fourth down? Exactly. Yeah. Well, I think the umpire had 12 missed calls or something like that. So like, there were still 12 calls that they didn't get. So, you know, there's so much confusion around it. But I ask you this question because my girlfriend asked to me yesterday. Why do they have home played umpires then?

32:58I don't have a real like honest answer. I don't know. What are you doing? You don't tell her about the rest of the rules that they have to enforce the rules. And then I brought up the disputes. What about the fights are fun, right? Yeah. The manager getting his shoes like dirt kicked on on his cleats. Yeah. The days of Lupinella and Tommy Lasorda and spark you. But there's still there's still in-person disputes though that a robot's not going to be able to fix. Sometimes you sometimes you like a good baseball fight and an ejection and these things. I like that too. I'm with you on it. I'm not hating. I'm just stating that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I have the answer. Yeah. And it's through sad analogy. But by the way, what would DB said? I agree that a home played umpire more as an administrator of sorts like almost overseeing the game like a home played umpire sort of the the crew chief that's sort of still. Yeah, I hate to say we're just in a weird transitional phase. This is not how it's going to remain permanent. Well, I'll tell you what. Can I give you a sad analogy? Sure. So we lost our dog in December.

33:58I mean, you're already making me sad. Piper waffles our little French bulldog. Oh. I was Sam. You would play with that dog every time you came over. Sam and my dog had a little bond. And spot two. Our buddy spot and Piper. You know, spot shed a tear at my house. I would expect it. Piper was a sweet little sausage roll. Can I tell you something? Not to get all said. You know, her dog ball is still out because my wife doesn't have the heart to officially put it away. Hmm. Sam. I used that said analogy. We're not ready to say goodbye to umpires because this is a part of us that's like, yeah, but it's like part of the game and like, you know, like the minute we say goodbye to the umpires, it's officially robots. Okay. We're keeping around, keeping them around for anyone over 70. And what we're keeping them around simply because we're almost scared to move on in a way. And think about like, I felt that way, Rich, remember when we fired our original producer, but we kept them around as a video guy until eventually faded away. Is that we do it all our producers make a video guy? And then get rid of them.

34:58I'm joking spot. No, but that's the truth, right? Wait, wait, what? Who? Our original original producer. Is this the pre-spot era? Yeah, the pre-spot era. It's like BC versus AD. We're not going to really get ready, dude. Like, you can make videos for us and stuff. And then eventually that went away. And that's what we're seeing here. I agree with you, Rich. Yeah, but sometimes you leave a company and they don't know or realize everything you did until you're gone. I don't know. There's a list of things. And like, wait. Oh, he did that. And he took care. Oh, and we got to cover that now. So you guys are not digging deep enough to what all the job responsibilities are for that home plate umpire. Yeah. You know what, Danny J. I hate to give you another sad analogy. I'm like, really bringing the sadness today. In your phone, do you have phone numbers of people that are no longer with us? Sure. Because deep down inside, you're never going to delete it because that's like a weird like, I'm removing them. You keep them around. Like some people will text a different relative as some type of like, uh, they're a therapeutic thing.

36:00Like, I'm just saying, we don't like to let things go. And I think umpires, we're really just going to hang around and see. And they're going to be their adventure. At one point, they're going to be they're just monitoring because you need someone. And I think we're like, Camino said, we're in a weird world where if you thought it was weird when social media and the internet took over, AI, people in that world will tell you, AI is going to dwarf the changes we saw with the internet. If we thought the internet and social media changed our lives, people are saying, AI. There's, there's people already talking about in our lifetime. Anytime you get a surgery or you're a doctor, it's going to be like a robot claw doing it. And there's going to be someone there so to monitoring it. I mean, we're, I mean, every industry is going to change with AI. Let's get a few phone calls, then Dan buyers update. So the question is, why do we even have umpires? Do you have a real logical answer for that?

37:01Feel sad to say goodbye to them. Danny, do you want to go rapid fire? Yeah, let's start with Randy and Kentucky. Randy, what's up, bud? How you doing? What's up, man? Hey, so I think I got four things. You got safe out calls at home plate. Yep. You got obstruction calls. Catchers interference. Randy, there's reasons. I think we're more asking like, why do we, why do we have them for like an app for balls and strikes? If we're committed to getting the call, right? Why not just get it right? I think we could all agree. And then I brought up the best point. Like, there's other calls a home plate umpires makes. But I'm saying, let's stick to the balls and strikes. Why we even, why are we like soft launching this just to make sure it's right? You think in a year from now, we're like, yeah, it works. Yeah, but they tested this. They've been doing it for I think through over three years. They've been using it and it's been in development for a long time. But with the pro level, I don't think they can just go cold turkey. Yeah, you're right. And people got to get used to, especially baseball fans.

38:01How much do you guys think that a baseball umpires reputation plays into this? They're really the only officials that confront teams. And I think that everyone is relishing in the fact that these umpires are being put in their place. Oh, yeah. You know, like there's something to that. You don't see. Jason Stewart. Jason Stewart. Excuse me. What's that? Jason Stewart. Oh, Jason Stewart. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. What did he say? What did Jason say? Jason explain your story. I thought Jason's relishing in the fact that he's umpires being buried. I thought we all saw his social media posts. I'm sorry. I shouldn't jump the gun there. Jason's kind of liking the fact they're getting a little bit, you know. Yeah. Like you don't see, you don't see Sean Hockuley, you know, getting in the face of Robert Salah. Yeah. On a holding call or anything like that. Like it would be. Yeah. It's these are the only officials that end up doing it in our arrogant and at times brash and sometimes start their own confrontations and now they're going to be putting their place. I know how sad it is for them though. You imagine there's still as arrogant as they may have been, right?

39:03And we all hated the empires. It brought a lot of fun. Danny, you say you love the Billy Martin umpire back. Yeah. It's a little kid. That was one of the things that drew us to the game. They were the guys that made the call. Now it's like they have no power. They have to go home to their wife all defeated. Like, what's wrong, honey? They're like, oh, nothing. It was embarrassed again at the field today. Like they are probably losing sleep at night. Like I love to hear an interview with one of these guys to hear the nightmare that they're living through right now. When you got the entire crowd. So you say they're in against them. They used to be big Mike who ran the police and now they don't run anything. I don't run anything. I'll give you a listen, man. I'm feeling like I'm rolling with the analogies. But you know, it's like a program director before Spotify and Apple and you know, I heart streaming before everything became more accessible on social media. Program directors used to have artists by the nuts. Like you want us to play your song. Well, you got blah, blah, blah, blah. Now it's like an artist is like, yeah, we don't need you as much. I feel a little bad for them. I do.

40:03Like a hot chick that's no longer hot. Like she was a hot. Like now she's like middle age fatty. When she used to be hot, she she thinks she could bust around guys. Not me more. Um, and you know, it's like, you know, the certain people that get out before the getting's good. I always say that you have never died before people were able to really point out how creepy he was.
