Born of the Virgin Mary

The Apostles’ Creed boldly declares the personal faith of every believer: “I believe… in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary.” This Virgin Birth is no mere detail it is the miracle of a new creation. In Christ, the second Adam, God begins a new humanity, free from the sin and death inherited from the first Adam, born instead to righteousness and everlasting life. While the world pins its hopes for a better age on politics, education, science, or social reform hoping to remake man by remaking his environment the gospel proclaims the only true path: Jesus Christ remakes the heart. “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God… which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12–13). The Virgin Birth guarantees that the Savior is both truly God and truly man, able to regenerate us, preserve us from darkness, and bring history to its glorious climax: “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever” (Rev. 11:15).
