Marc Polymeropoulos and Michael Weiss give their takes on the ProPublica report that a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin secretly bankrolled Donald Trump Jr.’s lavish Bahamas wedding. They examine the counterintelligence implications of a Putin-connected figure giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to the president’s son, including the potential for leverage, access, compromise and influence inside Trump’s inner circle.

They also discuss the oligarch’s connections to Russian ultra-nationalist groups and the war in Ukraine, including ties to an organization accused of helping abduct Ukrainian children. Plus, Mark and Michael explore what the FBI, Congress and national security-minded Republicans should do with the revelations and why the growing normalization of Russian influence could pose an even bigger threat.

A quick note: We know Russian counterintelligence isn’t exactly algorithm bait. But when a story like this breaks, we want to be able to call up people who have spent their careers inside this world and give them the time to explain what everyone else is missing. Paid Bulwark members make that kind of work possible: not just chasing the biggest audience, but putting real expertise behind stories that deserve serious attention.

My name is Mark Polymeropolis, former CIA officer of 26 years and I'm joined by my good friend, brother and arms, podcaster and arms, Michael Weiss, my favorite journalist and someone who I've been coming very friendly with over the years just because he has a lot more goddamn hair than I do. Look at that. It's looking good today, Michael. Welcome to Bullwork Takes. You tell me he's getting shaggy and I started to get my back up. I did more stuff for you. I started talking about my hair. I do, but I swear I suffer PTSD. I wore a slipknot shirt for you today too. I see that.

We've got to talk about my favorite band, but this is an incredible opportunity because a story just broke over the last several hours that blew my mind. I think it probably yours as well as a former intelligence officer and Michael U is someone who's chronicled Russian intelligence and is writing a book that's going to be a best seller, which I will promise the audience they will love. This is a little crazy. Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch, someone who is very close to Vladimir Putin, seems to have bankrolled Don Trump Jr.'s wedding in the Bahamas. Pro-Publica broke this story. It is now exploded all over social media when I first saw this and in fact we were going to talk about something perhaps even different, maybe in the Middle East or Russian Ukraine, but this is too much because this is now so brazen and so open. Just the sound bite that a oligarch connected to Putin, close to Putin, perhaps with ties to Russian security services. A bankrolled Don Trump Jr.'s wedding, what, several hundred thousand dollars.

Other Kremlins, other Russian officials, other Russians were there at the wedding. This is intelligence operations 101. Let me first hear your thoughts on this. Then we can kind of dissect why, really from both of our perspectives, this is so important because you and I both know Russian intelligence modus Eparandai and this is just like, you know, it's like, you know, chumming in the water for a shark. So yeah, I mean it is, it's a huge disclosure and hats off to Pro-Publica for getting the scoop. The things that jumped out to me the most here were, so Don Jr. claims that he met this guy. Kremlev is part of the Russian sort of boxing world, so he's big into international sporting competitions. He's into hunting. So all, you know, that kind of macho, macho man stuff that Don Jr. likes to lean into. He claims that that's how he, they became friends. They ran in the same circles. But Kremlev, there are two very important connections here that I think that, well, number one, and the reason why the Ukrainian government sanctioned him, we have sanctioned him in the US and I don't think the EU has.

The first is his wife. I think his wife's twin sister is involved in an organization that's basically stealing or kidnapping Ukrainian children from the, from the war zone. Now, this has become a huge scandal. In fact, it's one of the reasons that the ICC indicted Vladimir Putin and the woman in charge of this whole program. So that's one. The other, and I have to say, I think Pro-Publica buried the Leo a little bit on this, is that Kremlev is a big figure in the Nightwolves, which is, you know, the, the, the, the Koy way of describing the Nightwolves is though they're a Russian biker gang like Hell's Angels. Not quite. The Nightwolves is an arm of Russian ultra-nationalist foreign policy. They took part in military operations in Ukraine in 2014. They, they, they stormed. They think Naval headquarters in Crimea. These guys are not some, you know, kind of pop up a civil organization. I mean, they're an arm of the state.

And so you have here two very clear connections between this oligarch who, not just friends with the, the son of the President of the United States, but as you pointed out, bank roll is, you know, Bahamas wedding, but is also very deeply connected to the ongoing war in Ukraine. So I don't think you need a degree in intelligence studies. I don't think you need to have been a practitioner, either in your former shop or the FBI to see this for what it is, a very transparent influence operation. And one that certainly has succeeded already in that because money has changed hands, because there's a transactional nature to this. I mean, Donald Trump Jr. has already been compromised, right? Yeah. The guy has paid for this man's wedding, right? They're not just acquaintances. They're not just friends. They don't just go hunting together. The guy has given money to the son of the President of the United States. So I know we're kind of, we're a little disensitized to this stuff because of the first term, right? We have to rush a gig and all that, but this is not, you could write this one in Krayon.

This is not a hard one to figure out. I think you put it perfectly. I mean, this is intelligence operations 101. And if you look at this, well, let's just dissect one key point when intelligence organization or anyone for that matter bankroll, something like this, you know, you have to ask, what is the benefactor expect in return? And so, so, Kremlin is going to expect something. The Russians are going to expect something in return. It might not be tomorrow. It might not be next week. It might not be next month. But you don't do this without that, that kind of that, that, that, that, that the nature of that hanging over you. This message is brought to you by Zibiotics. I have to tell you about this game changing product I drink before a night out with friends. It's called Pre-alcohol by Zibiotics. So as you may have known, I'm a dad. And I love being able to go out my friends on a Saturday night, even on Russia, Shana. And then get up in the next morning and actually be present with my kids. Do I love it? Yeah, I do. Is it tough? Yeah, it's tough. Whether that means getting outside, playing baseball in the yard or just running around

with those kiddos, times really important to me. So I've become pretty intentional about thinking ahead in Zibiotics, fits right into that routine. Zibiotics pre-alcohol probiotic drink is the world's first genetically engineered probiotic. It was engineered by PhD microbiologists to break down the acetaldehydes. I got that right. And unwanted byproducts of alcohol metabolism make pre-alcohol your first drink of the night. Seriously, it's actually kind of good because if you're going to have a bunch of wine, which is occasionally what I do, this thing will help. So, you know, you can go to the blog responsibly, enjoy your next day activities. Zibiotics has sold more than 14 million bottles and earned the trust of thousands, including me. And I think some others at the Bullwark too if I'm thinking correctly, try for yourself today. And if you are unsatisfied, they will refund your entire order. No questions asked. And that's the leverage. And so, all of a sudden, a Russian oligarch has leverage over the son of the president of the United States. I mean, that's a scandal, by the way, that should take down, you know, a president of the past, particularly when Don Juner is so influential in the president's life and in Republican party circles. I mean, it's one of those things in which a couple of things came to mind. One is they're not even denying it. I mean, the pro-publica article was interesting because Don Juner's people are saying, yeah, this happened. And so they don't even bother him. He's a friend, denying it. There's another piece of this, though, that I think that I saw in the article and maybe you can comment on too, that there were other Russians who were there at the wedding. And so what does that do? So think of it in my old job. Think of it you as a journalist. If Kremlin shows up with other Russians, whoever there may be, Don Juner's wedding, Chair, Kushner was there, lots of other people surrounding the president of the United States is there. And to me, in my old world, and you looking for sources too, I mean, that's like, you

know, happy hunting 101. So there's a human intelligence aspect in terms of access to the president's inner circle that all of a sudden the Russians now enjoy. Now they may have before, if you talk about, you know, the whole Russia gate, Russia hoax thing, which I, of course, don't believe it's a hoax, I think it was very real. But that was the, you know, that was contacts, hundreds of contacts between the Russians and the Trump campaign many years ago. Well, now you have more Russian contacts with the son of the president. And you know, again, that's something that an intelligence organization only dreams of having that. It's like, it's like if you get an invite to a party and you have all of the most lucrative targets right there. And by the way, it's a three day, it was a multi day affair. And so on that notion of the access, drinking, yep, drinking, who do all the other substances? So it's it's it's fertile ground for catching people doing a lot of things and then using it against them in a future date, right? Blackmail compromise. Um, the other thing I would say is this, look, what do you expect in return?

It could be something sort of, you know, large scale or grandiose like a policy decision, you know, cut off arms to Ukraine, cut off intelligence Ukraine. It could be something more minuscule or but still significant, for instance, you know, somebody is going to put the bill for your wedding hundreds of thousands of dollars. Suddenly you feel beholden to them in such a way that you begin to not only trust them, but want to confide in them, bring them into your inner circle, they become a confidant. And suddenly you're telling them things that you shouldn't be telling them. I mean, Don Jr., you said he's he's significant in Republican party circles. Let's be very clear. If he didn't exist, JD Vance wouldn't be Vice President. He had selected Vance and he is deeply responsible for grooming JD Vance as Donald Trump's chosen successor, which I think is now quite clear that that's what he is. This is a breach, you know, I mean, I don't know any other way to say it. This is a this is a breach. And again, I mean, if we had an actual counterintelligence program at the FBI or one that was allowed

to do its job, I mean, there are good law enforcement agents, there are good CI agents, but there's no political will to go after anything Russian because this administration doesn't want to hear it, right? Obviously now there's a vested interest in them not wanting to go after anything Russian because it's too lucrative to to the first family. Yeah, I mean, not look, it's it's funny that this is happening now. I mean, just at the weekend, there was a video I posted it to Twitter. The former deputy permanent representative to the UN here in New York from the Russian side, Demetri Poliansky. This guy is also an SVR agent under diplomatic cover, right? So he's been running around doing all kinds of influence operations in New York, bringing useful idiots Americans to the UN to testify and give bullshit evidence about, oh, Syrian chemical weapons didn't exist. It was a hoax. Here's why we should norm Ukraine. Yadiyah. His ex-girlfriend, a Sputnik journalist, a check national called Lenka White.

Where did Lenka White turn up recently? Errol Must's 80th birthday party in South Africa. There's a video of this show on YouTube. And Must's like, oh, and here is Lenka come all the way from New York. How the hell did they meet? You know, what's going on here? You know, the former side piece of a Russian spook travels to South Africa to cultivate, befriend, and God knows what else the son, I'm sorry, the father of one of the biggest industrial defense tech, all the garks in the United States, who was also part of the Trump administration up until a few months ago. By the way, White comes back to the US and gets who she interviews next, Anna Paulina you know, the new Dana Rorobacher of Congress couldn't find somebody more willing to do the Kremlin's bidding than her. It's all of these things are happening in plain sight. There's no artfulness, there's no clandestinity anymore. It's all happening in the open on social media. And I guess just supposed to sit back and say, well, what are you going to do? You know, we already had the Mueller report. Like, it did work out so well. I guess we just have to let these things roll off like water off a duck's back.

Ordinarily, you know, my head would blow off here as a former CEO officer. I ran counterintelligence cases. I'm very well versed in this world. I work closely with the FBI in this. But I think we're also exhausted by the kind of incredible corruption. And frankly, the failure of the Mueller report to get anywhere where they should have. I mean, that's a whole separate issue that you know, you want to generate the outrage. There should be outrage, but I do wonder. And it has exploded on social media. But, you know, ordinarily, this should be one of those moments when anybody. And I don't care if you're a Democratic or a Republican lawmaker, certainly if you're in the law enforcement intelligence community, you like. The president's son cannot be accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Russian old guard close to Putin. That is so beyond the pale. So I guess two questions on this for you. One is, what will be the Republican Party reaction to this? Because I mean, and I would hope that let's see if Fox News covers this. They should ask the Republican members of the House and the Senate their thoughts on this.

And number two, what about the FBI? And let me say that there are men and women in the FBI who are outstanding patriots who put their nose to the ground every day, whether it's on counterterrorism, on counterintelligence. I have no problem with that whatsoever. Something like this though is a leadership question for the FBI. And how do you ignore this? Because if this is ignored, then all norms are out the window. You know, then nothing is sacred anymore. Because again, this is so brazen. And now I want to kind of get myself worked up here a little bit because it's so utterly preposterous what happened. But again, I fear sometimes that everyone's going to be like, well, it's so goddamn corrupt. Everyone is on the take here. Sure, Don Trump is hanging out with Russians. But we have to keep up kind of not the outrage, but the pressure to say, this is not right. This is not America. This is not what should be happening to our political system. No, and I mean, there's a bizarre irony to all of this, which is, you have members of this administration and you have Congress people like Luna herself, who's railing against foreign money and foreign

influence operations in the United States. She herself is the target of a foreign influence operation. Perhaps not bright enough to realize it. But look, you know, the State Department, Marco Rubio State Department put out this lengthy report just a few weeks ago on Cuban intelligence operations and Cuban influence operations. It was a decent report that kind of tried to tie the room together, also linking them to Iranian operations, Russian operations, Chinese operations, and so on. There isn't awareness that this is a problem, that this is a national security crisis. But there is not only no appetite to go after the malign actors. We have gutted the federal government. All of the bodies, all of the agencies responsible for this. Staff has been fired for politicized reasons. Oh, sorry, you did your job investigating a CI issue that fell afoul of the president. You're out. Right. It doesn't matter if you have decades of experience and you know where all the bodies are buried. In fact, that's the incentive to get you out. The global engagement center, which was stood up.

The first term in Trump's first term State Department to counter foreign disinformation and influence operations. So what the Russians are doing, the Chinese are doing, the Iranians are doing. Could have come in handy in the last couple of months when we were at war with Iran, and they were eating our lunch for us in terms of propaganda and online influence peddling, especially on TikTok and Twitter where Americans were cheering the IRGC because they saw these cool Lego videos. All of these institutions have been destroyed. And now we find ourselves sitting here naked, open to foreign money, foreign intelligence. And yeah, I mean, if we allow this to happen, how do you then bring anybody to book in future? Yeah. Oh, you're working for Chinese military intelligence. So what? Whatever. The president's son took money from whatever, you know. This is the thing. I think it's deteriorating our resolve and also our capacity to be scandalized or shocked by it. And that's the real danger because this becomes normalized. It becomes normalized and there's a sense of exhaustion. But there is an election coming up. And with what I think everyone expects is the Democrats.

So at least when control the House and perhaps the Senate, that means an oversight role is something that will be taken a bit more seriously. Now will the Trump administration listen or adhere to subpoenas? Remains to be seen. But I think that if I was sitting, if I was Jim Himes, who right now is the minority member of the House of Permit and Select Committee Intelligence, presumably or he could be, I'm not sure if he actually can be now could he be, and end up being a ranking member if the Democrats win. But if things like this, which have to be front and center, I mean, you can't allow this to occur without any kind of oversight. Now maybe the pro-publica reporting is not correct. Maybe there's a plausible explanation somewhere, but I'd like to see really a deep dive on this. And the other part of this too is I'm also interested to see how kind of more mainstream media covers this. Obviously we're talking about it in the bull work. Pro-publica deserves huge credit.

But what will the Washington Post and New York Times Wall Street Journal do on this? I mean, I would imagine their national security team should be all over this. Probably wondering why they didn't get this scoop to begin with. I mean, good on pro-publica. But this should be something, and then of course, what about Fox News? What about other organizations from the right? Because again, there are national security-minded Republicans. You and I know them, the Don Bacon's of the world. I mean, there are people in the Republican Party who could look at this and say, this is insane. Now, will they speak up about it is one thing, is one big question. But this is one of those things that I don't think you can let stand. One other piece, too. Let's not forget. Marco Rubio, when he was vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, when they put out the report on Russian interference in the elections in 2016. And it was a report which he probably, well, he should be proud of it, but he may wish now that his name was not on it. But it basically said that there was enormous counterintelligence concerns about the contacts between the Russians and the Trump campaign.

There's no way Marco Rubio, who is a cold warrior, is looking at this and thinking this is okay. So what does he do when he is asked about this? I would love to see the press ask kind of national security-minded Republicans who know better about this and what are they going to do. And I think that's going to be a testament to their character. Because if they brush this aside, the game's up and then really there's no hope. Yeah, I mean, unfortunately, the ones who are sort of your classic national security hawk called warrior types, they keep their head well below the parapet because they don't want to fall afoul of the president. And again, as I said, there's this exhaustion, this fatigue about the Russians are doing X, Y, and Z. I mean, the Russians, as we speak, are literally blowing up factories and buildings all across Europe. An airport in Leipzig, a derailment of a train in France, which has been allegedly an active sabotage, the M.Co, a Bulgarian arms dealers factory blown up twice,

in the last, I think, six weeks. This is what they're doing, but we have become so inert to it. Or it's been so much in the news cycle that, as I say, our capacity to be shocked by this or impressed in any way has been diminished. And you know, it's funny. I've noticed in recent, I would say the last year, maybe two, within Magu itself, there's a kind of civil war, or there are fault lines being drawn. Why are there fault lines being drawn? Probably because of October 7th and then all of the knock on wars and the sort of anti-Israel and stroke anti-Semitic sentiment that's being inculcated by some of the mega-rights, the woke right, whatever they're called, led by Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens in that lot. And then on the other side, you have like, you know, the Ben Shapiro's and to some extent, Laura Lumer, who went to Ukraine and all of this, who are now suddenly caughting on to Russia as a menace, Russia as a hostile adversary, looking to undermine the United States and her interest,

looking to cultivate and recruit Americans, looking to push influence operations on the American electorate. But even though the camp that's now got religion, so to speak, on Russia, is more aligned with Donald Trump and the Tucker Carlson wing is more of an insurgency looking to, basically, I mean Carlson is called for Trump's impeachment. He wants to see JD Vance as president now today, right? Where are the, this civil war has yet to actually bleed out, materially at the policy level. The Trump loyalists, who now say, wait a minute, Russia is a bad actor, look what they're doing in Ukraine, look what they're doing here. They don't seem to have much buy-in with the president. They're not, they're not actually pushing him in a direction that we would like to see him go, which is clean fucking house. You know, I mean, you have the, the, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, a, a, a bat shit conspiratorial, you know, kimchi eating lunatic, who should be nowhere near a hospital as an administrator, much less than some kind of medical expert.

He was literally dining out with Scott Ritter, who is a fully recruited Russian agent and a pedophile, by the way. And he was posting this photo on, on social media after his appointment. You know, Scott Ritter, Tucker Carlson, Jeffrey Sachs, all of these people have been targeted by the Russians. And in fact, Tucker Carlson, I would say, you're going to see evidence come to light very soon of his enlistment in an organization that is staffed from start to finish by Russian Spooks, including GRU and FSB officers who have been sanctioned in some cases. So what, what are we doing? You know, either, either this is suddenly now all okay and we're fine with it and, but them's the brakes or somebody somewhere is going to have to say, hang on a minute, we can't allow this to happen. You know, I think back to my old, my old, my old, my old job and, you know, if, if I was handling, for example, a penetration of the Russian government right now, and I'm doing a, a, a clandestine meeting at a dark alley somewhere. And the Russian penetration, who I have,

we have recruited, the CIA has recruited with the promise that we are trying to make Russia a better place. We want to understand Russia more. We want better US policy. And this Russian is doing it for the right reasons. I geologically hates Putin. But then he sees the president's son hanging out with a friend of Putin. I think it makes my old job harder. I think it makes it very difficult to recruit a source within Russia just because, because there is going to be a question on the loyalties of those around the president. And this has to do with the president's family. And the next part of it is, okay, well, wait a second. If I, if you, CIA, if I'm going to entrust my security to you, how are you going to keep my name out of the books that would filter up to the White House? And especially if the president's son is hanging out with a friend of Putin who, who, and we didn't really touch on this, in the pro-publica piece, they did a bit. I'm, you know, I'm low to kind of make any kind of accusations. But there are also the Ukrainians certainly have in the past

have talked about Kremlin being tied to the FSB, the Russian internal service. And so I think this makes it really difficult for my old job in recruiting sources. Again, this is, this is damaging in so many ways. I think the last piece to kind of cover here is, I think a question on where does this, and this is getting a little more complicated because Don Jr. has actually invested in companies that are helping with, you know, helping making drones in Ukraine. Yet he is also now hanging out with a Ukrainian, I'm sorry, a friend of Putin who has been integral in really doing some horrible things towards Ukraine. How does that make sense? Explain that. Or is that just the transactional mercantilist nature of the Trump family will make money. We don't give a shit. We believe in nothing. Who cares? Correct. Yeah, I think you said it. He sees the drone industry boom for what it is. It's a cash cow. The Ukrainians do this better than anybody. So let's invest in

the Ukrainian drone company. It doesn't mean he wants to help Ukraine. He doesn't have a geopolitical imperative or moral imperative here. He'll lie down with the Russians too at the same time. You know, I mean, for the same reason, the Ukrainians went to Donald Trump and said, we're offering you our rare earths and our mineral deposits of which, by the way, there aren't as much, as many as the Ukrainians would like the Americans to believe. Because, you know, oh, okay, we're going to take over your country. We're going to make money. We're going to build minds and so on. And we don't care if you control it or if the Russians come in and they conquer you and then they control it because we still get rich. Another kind of what the fuck moment in the history of kind of US and Russian intelligence, I think this actually has some legs. I think that many of my old world, my friends of my old world, are going to look at this even if they are, you know, of the more kind of conservative minded nature, even if they are a little bit pro-magga. There's some, you know, I have some friends who are kind of mega curious who used to work at the agency, but I can't see them condoning this. And I think the really the things to look out for in the future is,

you know, what's the reaction to the FBI? What's the reaction of kind of members of Congress on the GOP side who are going to be very hard pressed to justify? I would love to see someone for the press, go right up to Mike Johnson and say, please explain how this is okay and watch him kind of tap dance or dance to the raindrops on this. There is no shame attached to any of this anymore. So here's my guess as to what the response is going to be. Well, the US government didn't sanction this guy, so how can you say he's a bad actor? This is Rousseffobia, you know, this is McCarthyism, not every Russian is bad, blah, blah, blah, blah, this is going to be the line, right? And if he wanted to give money to Don Jr., as a gift, well, that's just a sign of the intimacy of their friendship. Wow. Nothing to see here. Let's move on. That would be a sign, by the way. You can write this in crayon. This is exactly what they did the first time. They're going to do it again. Now, the US government officials, by the way, a US government official taking about a penny from a Russian old gark gets you fired and the FBI is knocking at your door. So I mean, come on, all those financial disclosure forms that

I filled, I talked to European services all the time. They're of rules or even more draconian than ours. And, you know, one, one Polish intelligence officer told me once, you know, if my daughter were to date a Serbian guy, I could be fired. Fire, yeah. Because that's the level of security paranoia here. So taking money, are you kidding? I mean, it's that's, as I say, this is this is paint by numbers kind of stuff. This isn't even complicated. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, look, my hope and I admit it's a dimming one. If the Democrats take the house and they get their shit together and they hold hearings or inquiries at the congressional level into corruption. I mean, Ann Applebaum has a cover story in the Atlantic. I haven't read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it about the sort of runaway mega corruption. I think that there should be a deep dive investigation with the power of subpoena into everybody in this administration, Whitcough, Kushner, the kids.

I mean, you know, where are you making money? And, you know, in what countries with what contributors, participants, and how have you leveraged any kind of diplomatic, either officially diplomatic or unofficially diplomatic role to enrich yourself? Just gum them up for the next two years in corruption hearings. You know, I mean, obviously just pure counterintelligence doesn't seem to do the trick and people their eyes glaze over. But if you show just how much money is being made, I mean, Whitcough, over a hundred million dollars in returns on crypto investments with the UAE behind him, right? And what is he doing running around the Middle East trying to cut deals, cut one over Gaza, cutting one now over to end the Iran war with Emirati participation all the way. All right. Well, I think we've expressed our appropriate outrage. I hope this story has some legs. Again, from an old spook like myself, this is distressing. It is outrageous. It is infuriating. But I
