Avalanche Complete Amazing Comeback Win Over Dallas to Cap A Wild Trade Deadline Day

Let's talk about it on an epic come from behind win for the Colorado avalanche on a new episode of Lockdown avalanche coming at you. Your first listen of the day in for making the Lockdown podcast network the number one sports podcast network in the country always appreciated what a game really nothing else you can say. Well, there's a lot you can say, but it starts with that is these are the fun games. If you knew this was going to be that type of game going into it, we talked about it

1:02yesterday. And it lived up to the hype and probably even exceeded it. And you know, I mean, it's sometimes these are the games that you wish didn't end in shootouts, but that's the system we have. And when the apps have not been very good in shootouts this year, really in over times or anything after regulation, it was nice to get this win. It was nice to get the win in Dallas. It was nice to get the win in come from behind fashion. Just that never say die, never quit attitude wrapped up a very entertaining day for the Colorado avalanche going back to the Nazum Country trade. So all in all, one of the more fun days of the season, if you're an avspam. I know a lot of people were saying this game is too stressful. They want to just get past it, get to the end of the game like we'd much rather just have it be a blowout. I would have loved to blow out the stars.

2:03There was zero chance. I thought that was happening. And I thought this game was one of the best hockey games we have had the pleasure of watching all season. It was so good from start to finish the first period. That was over in what felt like the blink of an eye. Both teams were fast back and forth. They were goal scored, but it was just like go, go, go, go, go, go, awesome. And I love that because that's what I want to see. I can't believe the avscore, not one, but two power play goals on the day on the same day that you pick up Nazum Cady, but he doesn't even play for your power play in this game. Yeah. It's like, it's over five overall. It's 40%. And it's not just this game, like since the return from the Olympic break, it's been improved. And that is all you're asking for right now.

3:03We're not sitting here saying like, oh, the power play is fixed. It is a small sample size, but in that small sample size, it has looked better. And you have multiple power play goals. This one, you have multiple power play goals in one game, and it's those are the things that you need to continue, you have a month and some change. And if you can keep doing that, you feel so much better about where the power play stands going into the playoffs without a doubt. And you hold the number one, number two power play in the league, number one at home in the league to one for four, which I think is a pretty impressive stat on its own too, because that power play looked dangerous, plus a five on three that you kill off. And that was probably some of the best penalty killing I have seen out of the avalanche ever. It was great. Yeah. I agree. I think that the killing that that five on three, which was for, it was like 30 seconds

4:05or something like that. Yeah. 30 second five on three, might as well be, you know, a two minute power play like that. That's a long time for a five on three. And I thought the way the abs handled that was was a little bit risky, because you did press at the blue line a little bit with a five on three. Usually you don't do that as heavy as the abs are doing that, but it worked. It worked. And the abs really did that after that first power play, after that, the, I thought that the penalty kill looked phenomenal. Like they were, they were pressing at the blue line. Abs don't like to do that a lot on their penalty kill. They usually, they'll give you a little bit of pressure, but they'll usually let you gain the zone and then just get themselves set up and they'll play a defensively sound penalty kill, but they were not doing it. So the, you know, I don't know, like just the, the scouting on, on what Dallas does was

5:13at the forefront, at least for the penalty kill, because they were making it difficult, after that first one, give them the first one, good job. After that, really made it difficult for, for Dallas on their power play, which like you said, is tough to do, especially in their home arena. Yeah. So, so that's, oh, there we go. I heard some, I don't know, my microphone did something weird, but, yeah, I don't know, like, so you do, you, you get, I mean, it wasn't the best start for the abs. I mean, you did get the, the first goal, which is, is great. That's, you know, what, what you wanted to do. And then Dallas just rips off three goals. And, you know, they, I don't want to call them fluke goals, because goals are goals, but, you know, you have, you go, Mackenzie Blackwood goes to clear the puck from behind the net, and it just hit was Devon takes, like right, and then, and then it's just

6:15he's flailing all over the place to try to get back into his net, and that doesn't work. And then you have Josh Manson, and who was with him that, you know, two of them behind the net, they kind of fumble the puck and, you know, Dallas guy, Ben, and Jamie Ben gets, so they were ugly goals, and, and, but it seemed like, you know, you can't do that against the team like Dallas, you can't have those moments. And Dallas had a lot of, you know, odd man rushes that just materialize that of nowhere. It was like, okay, they're just on a, on a transition, and then boom, like, where did the As players go? There's one guy back on defense, and there's a two on one. They shut them down for the most part on those, I mean, rushes, but you're, you're giving a very good team multiple opportunities, and you're, you're just screwing things up that lead to goals for them. And you're lucky, you're, you're like, you are a good team yourself, because a lot of other teams could not come back after those mistakes.

7:19So you give the avalanche a ton of credit for doing that, but at the same breath, like, you don't want to put yourself in no situations, because, you know, on a seven game series against a team like Dallas, like, you can't keep doing that stuff. Cannot keep. So they corrected it. I think, you know, pulling Mackenzie Blackwood was the right thing to do. You know, was the goal that Jamie Ben had his fault, not really, but, you know, he didn't look good in this game. And it was the, these are the type of games where you, you got to pull someone when they gave up, what was it, four goals on 11 shots, I think it was, you got to come out. And part of the reason you do that is to give your team a job, because your team feels horrible when, when they feel like they left their goalie out the dry, when you pull a goalie. So when you bring in the back up, it's like, okay, let's not do this to this guy either. And they didn't. Scott Wedge would came up huge in this game, massive in this game. I would like to touch on the Blackwood piece, because I don't think he looked right.

8:23Not like injured or anything like that. He just, it was an off game for him for sure. But of the four goals he let in, I really only think I fully, fully put one of them on him. And even that one might have just been a miscommunication when he played the puck behind the net and then lost his stick and was just out of position. It kind of sounds like somebody on the broadcast broke that down nicely saying, it is so stinkin loud in this place that it's very possible. Devon Tase said, do not go for it. Blackwood hear that goes for it. And then the puck ends up in the back of the net. I mean, it is what it is. Gotta admit, the Adreno was loud. So credit to credit to the Dallas stars fans for bringing in the noise. But then the other three goals, like I agree, Blackwood maybe could have made good saves, but him making those saves, we'd be sitting here talking about what an unbelievably otherworldly performance he had, because those were, those were a little rough. It was Manson and

9:27Val behind the net and Manson got checked. Yep. Manson got checked and did that over. And, but like Manson's, Manson's a big guy and Val's there with him. You gotta be able to control that. So again, like not the best game from Blackwood definitely was the right move to pull him, not putting this fully on Mackenzie Blackwood either. I expect him to bounce back just fine. Oh yeah, no, I don't have a long concern about that. It's just, you know, this happens. You don't want it to happen in games like this against good teams because these are kind of like what you compare yourself to. But I, you know, Mackenzie Blackwood is not going to be happy about it, and he'll be better because of it and still the guy that they're going to lean on. Yeah, he just looked, I don't know if uncomfortable is where I don't want to say that because he's a professional. He's done this thousands of times. It just was a game where maybe, you know,

10:33the moment got to him and he was just pressing too much and he just didn't look comfortable on any, any save. And, you know, and when Dallas is press, pressuring and pressing, it did not seem like in that first period. Once Dallas got going, it was one of those things and you don't get this in the sport of hockey. It was like every possession you felt like they could score. Yeah. Because of, of combination of their to having really good offensive possessions and anything that goes on net is an adventure. Yeah. Like you're not getting a clean save. You're not getting a clean puck stoppage. You're not, you know, you get rebounds all over the place. So it, it could have gotten way out of control. It was kind of going in that direction. You make the goalie change, wedge wood settle things down, and you just start getting back to your game, little by little. And you feel like for a while too, every single bounce was going directly to the stick of a Dallas stars player. The puck rolls up on edge and it scoots right over to a Dallas

11:34stars player for a shot or a pass to an open like to a backdoor player or something like that. At the beginning of the game, especially, it just felt like they had all of that. I still stand by you create your own luck. They were pressing. That's how you create those types of things happening. That's why it feels like you get every lucky bounce. It kind of evened out a little bit later. But yeah, I mean, I agree. I think wedge wood comes in and just sort of calms it all down. Everything becomes more manageable. And then the result speaks for itself. So let's talk about some individual players, individual moments. It was wild. Obviously, when you have a game like this, there's going to be things that you you you look at players you look at. We can go kind of towards like right to the end of the game because we we've been on valentine shoot for a little while. Don't think he's been playing so well since the return of the Olympic break. Maybe he was one of those guys that just needed a few games to shake the two and a half week rust off. Who knows?

13:41But he seems like he's getting back into the normal swing of things. And God, you got to feel good for him. He had that one shot that went post to post. And you're just like maybe maybe it's not our night tonight and games, you know, shots like that. And then you get the game the game tying goal with 13 seconds left and and it's by him. Yep. He always seems to have some pretty big moments against Dallas. I think I don't think there's any love lost there between him and the stars. And I think he's going to wear that on his sleeve for his entire career. And he should. They gave up on him and we don't have to go rehash all that. But every time he plays Dallas, he's got a chip on his shoulder. I was going to say you could tell from the jump he had a little bit extra of an edge. He was also in a couple of guys' faces, which I mean, Val does that, but not quite the same way. He's there's certainly a little bit more of an edge that he plays with when he plays the Dallas

14:46stars. And to get that game tying goal with 13 seconds left, by the way, I saw this too. Number 13, of course, is 13th goal of the season with 13 seconds left. So that's played a lot of. Played a lot. Yeah. But for him to get that and then to go on and make the move that he did in the shootout to secure the victory as well, everything about his game tonight, I agree. We've been rightfully so saying we'd like to see more because we needed to out of Val. This is the more we wanted to see. He lived up much more to his expectation there. I really thought that that was a triple joint, as they said on the broadcast. Yeah, it almost looked like it caught post crossbar post. And if he triple jointed it now, then he absolutely was carmically deserved that game tying goal. You know what that shot looked like? It was almost like that the DVD screensaver thing that almost goes exactly into the corner. So it's tough to know

15:51if it doubled in the corner or went perfectly into the corner like the DVD logo. So let's see, what else? Actually, you know, for the most part, I thought the third period, like the first two periods were fun, exciting. You had Dallas jumping out to that lead. They gained the lead. They're looking good, go all these pulled. Yeah, a lot of stuff going on in the first two periods. And then in the third period, I thought things slowed down a little bit. You had the penalties by the abs. They really couldn't get much going because of that. And then Dallas commits a penalty. And I think that's where things like, okay, they didn't score on it. The abs didn't score on that one. But it let them kind of take, I don't say take control of the third period, but get back to their game plan. And before that, it did. It did. But as you know, nothing is given especially when you're pulling going up against a team like Dallas. So, but it got back to like

16:53their normal flow after that penalty on Dallas. And then yeah, you get that last minute goal I mean, you got a last minute goal from Nathan McKinnon in the the first period. That one was with nine seconds left on the power play. And then you get the the Val one with 13 seconds left. And then yeah, what's up? The power play at the end of the first period. Yeah, if you see when they kind of huddle up before the face off there, somebody pointed this out and they zoomed in kind of on Gabe Landiscogg's face. Landiscogg is giving McKinnon a look that is just like you you better know what you're talking about right now because this sounds insane. And then they score. So I just say something like this better work or something like that. It's the look he gave definitely like this better work. I don't know if he actually said anything. I didn't see or hear that, but you could tell from the look he's like this is yeah. This is who just got

17:55told the heist plan and it is completely off the wall. They molded off. They did. They did. So you get those going over time. I thought it was a good good overtime. I actually thought the abs overtime was great. It was good. They held the puck for like the first half of overtime. Didn't really get exceptional looks, but okay. I mean, it was okay over time. So you go to the shootout, which we always call the coin flip and really is what it is. Sometimes you win them, sometimes you lose them. But it that is what it is. But the fact that it was Val again, who got the first one in a beautiful move to do that. Yeah. A version of the Forzberg that he pulled off. And then Marty natious gets one. He had a nice move. And then Wedgwood with two really nice saves. Especially that first one on Jason Robertson. That was a good shot. For Wedgwood to get back across like that. Yeah. I mean, the gloves like the little easy for me to say, the glove

19:00save on Matt douchein. I thought was like more flair because you're able to do the whole tuck the glove and everything. The save on Robertson was way, but it was such a good push to get back over and just stop that from coming in. Yeah. And that was that was just Wedgwood's night. It really was. To circle back to the power plays. I was talking about this with the people on Discord. That first one. That kill McCart scored. That what that seems to be a play that they like running now. Where it is Nathan McKinnon down on the wing, but low. Kind of almost in the corner. And if if they're giving kale McCart a lot of ice from the point on down on the right hand side, he just finds an area. He just scoots down slowly behind everybody and Nathan, if Nathan McKinnon can find him on that, he's going to have a shot every single time. Easier said than done, but they've scored on that twice now. Yeah. So and they really don't really try to make that pass all season

20:05long. They have all season long have just been making the easy pass and then just firing a shot on net and let's see what happens. But they're they're doing some designed plays making like stretching the defense, trying to make the defense play a little bit and maybe get out of position, which is great. You're not going to score every time on them, but it makes the defense think. So you got to feel good about the direction, the power plays heading there. And as you watch the goal visualizer on that one too, you can really see basically all four Dallas stars players are on the same side of the net with Nathan McKinnon and Marty Nages because they're both up against the boards there, which like you said, that's where kale McCarr just has essentially unlimited time and space for him to just move down and pick his corner. And if kale McCarr has the opportunity to pick his corner, you're probably allowing a goal. Exactly. And what do you what are you supposed to do as a defense that's down a man? You have to give

21:08credit, not credit, but you have to pay attention to Nathan McKinnon. You got to respect him. You have to respect for Martin Nagesis, who's usually all over the place. And you know, you're letting one of those three guys roam free. You can't you can't cover them all. So if you know, if that play is going to be there, that'll just increase the percentages. So. Well, and I think the other part of that too is you've got Landis Cog and Nelson both kind of net front. Nelson was more behind and up to the side, but you got Landis Cog right net front too. So they're they're having to block that because if there's a guy that knows how to score from directly in front of the net in a scrum like that, it's Gabe Landis guy. So you have to you can't leave anybody alone and you have to leave someone alone. Yeah. So it's a it's a good execution. I'd love to see this continue to work. But the guy we need to thank most of all. It could be Jamie Ben. What? Why don't we get our last break in here and then we come back? Is it is it?

26:25oh the game still happening dude I did this I went from same thing like okay there's an empty net to him missing it to me immediately going oh my god tie this thing up please yeah because then it's solely on Jamie Ben like every it was a complete shift in tone for me it was the same thing as you and the fact that they did it the fact they did even if they they lost this in overtime or the shootout and you still got the point yeah we still be sitting here talking about how Dallas could have taken two full points from you and thanks to Jamie Ben you only got the one yep but it's it's just glorious day that Jamie Ben cost them the extra point love just wild absolutely love it from resigned to defeat to just pure elation in about a minute and it was yeah it was fantastic beautiful did what is it just me though

27:27or did he look a little waxed asical moving all game well mostly that was the net miss yeah oh he totally was he was like I've done this since I was five years old this is this is easy that that was a a a for a baseball analogy that was a pop fly to an infielder that bobbles it once in a thousand pop flies you drop that was it that was Nathan McKinnon missing the open net and goal in the gold medal who he just had to bring that one back up too hopefully Nate's not listening to this podcast this episode he listens to the rest for sure but hopefully he missed that piece although he's chuckling about that I'm sure he is too we all are we're all having a nice laugh at that all right so other guy just want to bring up some some stats here let's see so you had Nate with the three point game one goal to assist for him Marty natures with a four point game

28:32we didn't we didn't really even talk about that enough one goal and three assists for him and and the overtime or excuse me the shootout uh yep he did get a shootout goal for that yeah defensive side kelman cars the only guy that put up points one goal one assist for him I wanted to bring up let's um yeah Ross Colton yeah you know he didn't get traded and I think I think you know when guys that are on the block remain those are guys I like to watch and you know he didn't have any points in this game but 10 hits 10 hits for us going row in the body he was and that's not really his game like he'll muck it up if he needs to like after post whistle scrum or something like that but he like Dallas is a big team Dallas plays a heavy game they are going to throw their weight around you know that going in you have to match it as best as

29:35you can the avalanche aren't going to but when you have guys like uh Ross Colton say like I'll I'll do my share uh you you you you respect stuff like that yes so good you know 10 hits for him 10 hits for that six coursey four events for him as well three scoring chances and two shots on so like yeah I mean not they're not numbers that are like otherworldly necessarily but they're good numbers he had a really solid game yeah I mean for your defenseman tapes had one hit Makara had one hit Kulak had one hit Manson had two hits Molinsky and Burns zero and your depth forward had 10 good job Ross Colin agreed proud of you yep all right let's get to some subtext people and then we'll get to our soundcheck

30:40and wrap this bad boy up so let's see here we got Adam says unreal game I believe it was Moser that had the quote steam has guts and they just left guts all over the ice I think it was Moser who said that um that's one of my favorite goals all time that was spend andregetto against the predators guts all over the place got all over the ice yeah that goal calls ever and I feel like that was very true for the abs and I it just had the feel that they were going to tie it up especially after Jamie Ben missed the open net and my goodness that power play looked insanely lethal tonight still to taking too many penalties for my liking and had quite a few turnovers then they will need to clean up but I'm over the moon with him to be an abs fan today what a day 100% 100% man it's so true this this like I said this is going to be a data remember

31:43uh in abs history yet it getting cadre back and then going out and playing this game it was great K what a thriller val and that tying goal and the first shootout goal was pure sweetness he's my first star what a move in the shootout this was a playoff game all the way and I'm so proud of their determination and grit to grind this out incredible penalty killing to start the third and keep them in it too yeah yeah thank you game yeah uh Craig says wow oh wow what a game I think the team's confidence is pretty high with the deadline acquisition val seems pretty motivated in this game I'm glad the potential trade rumors for him we're not in the books his team's record within without him is night and day I can't wait for the whole team to be assembled this season feels special yeah I don't I mean you don't really get a team that's as loaded as this team is

32:44not often and they just loaded up even more yep so um that yeah so loaded up even more is something I was going to say like we just did all of this without lacking in without Logan O'Connor and without Nozum Kazoo will be here in a couple of days we'll play we're feeling we're feeling good yes bear says resilient win really guts you to keep fighting I like to see the power play starting score really hate stars goal song I don't again I think the the stars goal song is like Jamie Ben unless you're a stars fan like you don't like that you don't like it yeah you don't like it yeah uh soundcheck for bears Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh because this is how Colorado does it good call I like it love it uh and uh Christina says speechless I'm shaking two power play goals and a shootout win I screamed and woke up the kids but it was worth it uh started rough but ended exactly how we needed them to broke the stars win streak absolutely beautiful soundcheck

33:50from Christina walking on sunshine Katrina in the way all right um on the screaming note I apparently shot my wife a look because she took me off guard she screamed really loud when Val got that shoot out goal yeah I was not expecting it at all so I lived over her and the kid goes wow he just gave you a look just like this was not anticipating that scream so that's gets the people going um and then Zach are says hands down the best game of the season so far uh where she comes in and his nails monkey off the back for Val and apps and two absolutely filthy moves in the shootout two games against Dallas so far Dallas takes game one five four in a shootout abstract game two five four in a shootout I didn't even think about that yep so that's apparently the going rate for the abs and uh the stars are five shoot five four shootout wins hey this is a this is a seven game series like it's gotta be yeah 100 percent yeah

34:53and you almost feel like these are two teams that are just destined to meet in the playoffs um if I were a fan of any other team I would say it is the absolute most exciting must watch hockey of all time being a fan of the Colorado avalanche I will be nervous throughout the entire thing wow but it's still going to be some of the best absolute must watch hockey so let's wrap this thing up with our soundcheck and that's where we each pick a song that summarizes the game and put these songs up on a playlist over on Spotify and YouTube that you can follow along with LOA soundcheck volume number five is the playlist where you can find these songs so what do you got for this one so in the arena they kept playing a bunch of country music and I heard uh you know the Garth Brooks friends in low places was a pretty big one there and I feel Dallas is sort of embraced that country music similar to Nashville maybe not right the same but they've embraced

35:54that that country music sort of vibe sure uh so I'm going with a country song it's it's Eric church but the song I'm going with is titled stick that in your country song oh man are does he sing like is he like weird out of country songs or is that like a shit title for it's a legit title and I personally like the song um but the title just I was scrolling through trying to pick my song I saw that title I was like done that's the that's the one that's why I just can't take country music seriously like this just song titles alone uh just give me that reaction stick that in your country song yep I might actually have to listen to that one uh it's gonna throw my algorithm off over on YouTube music but uh sorry not bad oh my god that's brilliant uh games like this I I have to turn to to my my
