The state sits on huge, nor-slope natural gas reserves that could cut reliance on unstable foreign supplies. Leaders are pushing hard for the Alaska-LNG pipeline to tap into that resource, delivering gas to local homes, industries, military bases and allies. Overseas. Earlier this week, reminders surfaced of Alaska's track record and energy crises. After the 1973 oil embargo, the state built an 800 mile trans Alaska oil pipeline. That project has pumped up more than 18 billion barrels since 1977, proving Alaskans can handle big builds. Residents here pay 2 to 3 times the national average for energy, so this pipeline promises real relief. Independent projections show lower bills for families, thousands of construction jobs, and billions in tax and royalty cash for state and federal.
