He is pushing to let Ukrainian refugees stay in the state for good. These families arrived nearly four years ago and have since built solid lives and careers here. The big date is coming up on May 21st. That marks almost four years since the first Ukrainians fled to Alaska after Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Back then, the state swung into action fast to help with evacuations and resettlement. Alaska stepped up big time from day one. Volunteers, churches, businesses, and local groups all pitched in to welcome the newcomers. The governor set the tone early by condemning the invasion and offering Alaska as a safe spot. These refugees are now working everywhere from schools and hospitals to farms and construction sites. They're filling key job shortages and even helping reverse the state's population drop.
