AI: One Camas Resident's Wow and Yikes Moment

About this episode

Camas resident Anna Miller asked ChatGPT to explain itself, then shared her reaction: equal parts amazement and concern. She argues that legislators alone should not regulate AI, and proposes a broad national advisory council that includes researchers, ethicists, defense specialists, and workers. https://www.clarkcountytoday.com/opinion/letter-ai-artificial-intelligence-wow-and-yikes/ #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #ChatGPT #AIRegulation #Opinion #ClarkCounty #Washington #NationalSecurity #AIEthics #Technology

This letter to the editor was submitted by Anna Miller, Camus resident. Editors note, opinions expressed in this letter to the editor are those of the author alone and may not reflect the editorial position of carcounty today.com. I asked chat GPT, what are you and how do you operate? Here is the response. Chat GPT is an AI language model at its core. It has learned patterns from enormous amounts of text and other data. I don't look up a pre-written answer. Instead, I process the words in your conversation and generate a response one piece at a time based on patterns I've learned and the context of our conversation. It's much more sophisticated than simply predicting the next word though. The model has learned relationships between concepts, language, reasoning patterns, facts, styles of writing, etc. My response, wow, and yikes. The wow is how amazing chat GPT is as a tool for everyday life. It has helped me fix, navigate and learn from questions I've asked on dozens of subjects. The yikes, well, that is the magnitude of its capabilities and how it can be used for good or evil.

There's a lot of talk about regulating AI. I'm in favor of a National AI Advisory Council. Legislators are not AI specialists, a serious roundtable with an emphasis on national security could include members of Congress representing both parties and relevant committees. AI researchers and engineers, including people from major AI companies and independent researchers. Small and medium sized AI companies, not just the largest technology companies. Cybersecurity and national security experts, defense and intelligence specialists, business owners and workers who will be affected by AI, ethicists and constitutional and legal scholars, economists and labor experts, consumer and civil liberties representatives. The AI companies shouldn't be allowed to dominate the table. That's my take on the situation. I wonder what the status is on the subject. Oh, I know. I'll ask chat GPT and a Miller, Kamis resident, fan of AI.
