I am also super excited to do this because I think this is going to be our third or our trilogy are sequels of sorts. Some would say is that foreshadowing perhaps? Yes, because today in the episode we our main topic will be anime that deserve a sequel from our perspective and we're going to be reviewing prism rondo or love through a prism. So that's going to be exciting. Otherwise otaku, how are you doing my friend? I'm doing absolutely fantastic. It's a good weekend. Obviously here in the United States it's the first weekend for professional football today. So all of you and FL fans best of luck to your teams. I am in the B league because my team last year was decimated by injuries and so I was not able to get promoted to the A. League this year. They're actually okay. I didn't realize it was that intense. They run it like the Premier League format where the top I think it's three or four teams from the B league promote up from this year to last and the bottom four teams from the A. League get relegated to the B league. So, but it's a damn. Yeah, it's cut through. It's brutal, but we love it. All right. So let's get to the big news of the week. Oh, wait, actually, hold on. 4:08You know, podcast topic today. So yes, as as I talk to alluded to, we're going to be talking about the anime. Anime is that we think need a sequel. I will delve more into what we mean in the main topic itself and reviewing love through a prism. But before that, let's talk about the big news of the week and then big news of the week. Are big news of the week. Would you like to go first? Sure, sure, sure. It seems like all of my news of the weeks have been depressing of late and I can't help but continue that because the anime community lost another giant this past week as Mike McFarlane finally succumbed to his Geoblastoma diagnosis from 2025 and not unlike Peter Cullen who we talked about two weeks ago when I was on the podcast who was obviously Optimus Prime. Mike McFarlane probably

5:15had a larger hand in a lot of the younger anime fans. Growth, he was a producer, a director. He was best known as the English voice actor for master Rochi and Yajirovi and Dragon Ballinid sequels. He played Makoto Hiyuga in the Evangelion film series. He was Skymaster in Heaven's Lost Property. He just had a ton of really important roles but obviously the English role of Master Rochi is probably his most important and he was 56 years young and it's really really sad to have lost another voice acting giant but rest in peace thank you for the years of entertainment you provided us Mr McFarlane. We are getting to that point where well what is it every 10 years it seems on the six it is just a massive many many many legends

6:22generational losses I guess is what's starting to happen and it's always a little bit rough. The reefers putting in work lately and I'm not happy about it. Neither am I. All right my news of the week is a little bit a little bit shorter a little bit. I won't even know I guess it's a little bit more hopeful in a lot of ways. So there's this thing called the Tope Kyo Gap Financing Market that apparently helps project seek funding if they've met the original at least the minimum goal of 60% of their funding for something. So this past Wednesday at the recording of this episode the TIFFCOM which I assume is the Tokyo International Film Festival Committee and the Tokyo International Film Festival highlighted 24 film projects that needed to get I guess gap financing which essentially sort of as the name implies the last bit of financing

7:23you would need. It doesn't essentially it means you've done at least most of it and just that last little bit you just need and so they actually it's interesting I find it interesting that they have this sort of like they highlight projects that they think are good. So on of this one they're like five animated ones which are not all known but one come from OLLM's yeah so Prince have Zoneoff. I think the other ones include Brackage Zone which is that they're working title. There's an unnamed Toei project and there's one called Where the Wherey Burry the Pigeons and Wild Zero. So these are probably of higher quality in terms of story potential because these are for a film festival which seems kind of pretentious for me to say but I think it's actually interesting that they do this showcase so to ensure that these films can be shown probably at a future film festival. So yeah

8:24you know that that was a thing like I was always under the impression that once projects were greenlit they had the necessary funding to cross the finish line obviously we've heard about production issues which have caused delays in certain things but I always thought that on the whole it like I didn't know that they would have to actually go to benefactors I guess would be the best way to describe it and be like hey I have this project and I'm financed this much please give me money so I can finish it but I'm sure then it like kind of falls into like okay if you give us money to do this you'll get this percent of profits question mark I'm not sure how that all works but it's a very interesting idea. Yeah it's so I think this is actually pretty common so as shows like if you're able to get a good amount of investors then you can get like bigger

9:28investors so I assume these are for larger investors more often than not and even though we're seeing things like tow a entitled tow a name to a project which you kind of go to a has all the money you would think at this point why why are they looking for other investors but gap financing not like is something that is actually fairly common from what I remember I guess in this like film festival world now that I think about it but it's it's interesting to see and at least some anime projects are getting it so and also sometimes I think it is possible that some of these projects were had sponsors line up were 100% funded and then maybe one dropped out for one reason or another or like a one of the creatives left and so a sponsor left with that or something to that effect or there's like a falling so it's good to see that there are like at least five like a fifth of the projects that they're putting up for this gap financing are anime which it's I'm glad it's not more but it just probably means we're going to get some really interesting anime stuff in the coming

10:33years thanks to some assuming this works this this this event isn't happening until right around Halloween on October 28th for a bunch of these titles so I'm curious to see what happens I don't know we'll find out well I guess we'll find out when the movies come out or don't let's hope uh because we love having stuff to talk about so give us give us all the new projects so we can watch more more anime more conversations that's what I say here and if when I have to start looking because I haven't done the news break segment yet when I start looking for that I've I looked at already I had to go down a couple of days just to get this piece of information and it is I don't know what's going on in the anime industry guys you need to start pumping out some more news for us please because I'm sure some crazy things are happening but we need to know about them so we can tell everyone about them there's lots of video game announcements but the anime news has been very

11:33lacking oh by the way Andrew I would like to announce a personal achievement of mine I managed to be on the interwebs at the right time and have successfully pre-ordered a 40th anniversary Legend of Zelda switch to oh I'm so jealous I was able to do it I was able to do it I was able to very own a switch to but I so I can't justify spending that much money for a second one but especially you know I can and I did you know you have it because you got a switch to for Christmas of by it was a birthday present from my wife so she was like so what are we going to do I was like well you can keep one and we can play games together and and it'll be very very fun and cute she was like okay yes I guess also yeah that is also major news they released you know because we have a little bit of extra time let's go I'm what are your thoughts and you know this a little bit of video game use everybody and we could save it for hobby addicts but no so we're talking about Nintendo

12:38Direct for this month I we all know me as the Nintendo fanboy on this on this podcast I will I'm not a sim from just the fanboy I saw the direct it was really funny because I was just awake at the time and I'm like oh the director's now let's watch it and so I watch the direct what did you think of how it looks the O'Grino time remake that they were shown it looks fantastic it looks amazing um I can tell that this has been in the works for a while because this was this was something they were always going to do and you knew just because there was years and years of rumors that they were gonna do an O'Grino time remake but people didn't know if it was gonna make it to the switch one or for the next generation console so I am floored by I was floored by the

13:41initial teaser trailer that they did uh two directs ago when they announced it and an entire generation of millennials posted reaction videos where they were absolutely losing their minds and crying yeah and all it took was three simple notes from an O'Grino and everybody automatically knew what it was and uh just some of the gameplay footage that they posted and everything it hasn't disappointed I am so excited for this video yeah I'm I'm actually really happy about this because it's very uh Nintendo tends to be very intentional with what they do but there's a lot of things that they showed in the gameplay direct that they kept that a lot of people would think are weird things to keep from quality of life perspectives so the one thing they added is like now you can instead of having to roll everywhere if you roll you get a little bit of a speed boost you know like things like they know what the community is like which is always funny when Nintendo is kind of doing their anti doing their capitalism thing which is kind of annoying because a lot of the

14:44creatives behind Nintendo are very like they know they're like they know what they look at what their fans are they care about their fans and they're very um like they're discerning but one of the funniest things I saw was when you go through like passageways there will be a loading screen um and that was by choice they didn't have to do that they said we're gonna keep it in to preserve the that nostalgia from that game which is so it's just like yeah and everything just looks so good I mean I'm a little still a little bit like Link's face kid Link's face is a little awkward compared to everybody else like all the other character models look really good but Link for some reason is just too hyper realistic I'm like I'll get used to it but it's also like I don't know man it's a little weird but also I don't think it's gonna makes the game look like trash I think the game looks like it's gonna be really good I'm also genuinely shocked and pleased

15:44that it is releasing in six weeks that's wild November I was just like what not just November November 5th yeah just crazy I was like what's happening so obviously they did the Zelda direct but then they had their Nintendo direct so what are you most excited for of the new batch of announcements that they were at least I can tell you mine I'm assuming it's Persona 6 well Persona 6 is up there we believe it or not I was most impressed by the open world Kirby game that looks like it's gonna be a lot of fun yeah everyone thought we were getting a Mario game that's true so yeah I mean they are eating and I think they are fully leaning into acquiring people that love physical media especially after Sony's made all their announcements so they are coming for everybody that's pissed at Sony everybody that loves physical media in the idea

16:46of owning their games I think that they're playing at smart and I know that there are I can think of at least five people in my own life who had no intention of owning a switch and when they announced the Zelda remake they got their switches make sense oh poor that waiting until after Nintendo smart move waiting until after the price hike all right all right enough about video games and let's get into the main topic so this is I actually this was actually very much a collaborative effort between me and otaku when we were thinking about what to talk about this week right yep I think you started with uh shows we should get the other people to watch and I thought about that one and you know you're hearing this live so I'm I didn't we didn't talk about this like super extensively but when you said that I was just like yeah that's that's a that's a fun idea but we all know they're never gonna watch the shows we suggest we're we're we're we're we all gonna find the time to watch extra anime more than we already watch extra anime right and so I'm like

17:50okay that's a good one I and then you know then you then you brought up you know store shows that should have sequels and I'm like that's really a good idea given the fact that like you mentioned so many season twos are coming out and a lot of sees like a bunch of these season twos there's like years different not like you're typical one year maybe one and a half years or so different so we're talking like several year differences between some of these which are like I didn't even think you were gonna make a sequel so I thought that was really interesting and then I said oh maybe shows that deserve a remake but we can also delve into that how did you cut is what was going through your mind when you saw all of these second season sequels coming up it always tends to put me in a place of frustration because I think about projects that are getting their second season and then I think about all the

18:52shows that I love that haven't had their second season and it makes me pissed because I'm just think to myself how the hell is Rene a girlfriend coming up on its fifth season and I can't get season two of show x and it just makes me furious because it's just I don't understand the rationale especially if you just look at popularity and things like that and then I also think about numbers games and I'm like okay I guess this particular show doesn't have enough white foos they can't market it the same whereas Rene a girlfriend is pretty much a harem white foo show and all they do is make body pillows and figurines and people just buy them up left and right and I'm just sitting here waiting waiting patiently and we will go through our personal lists of our season two favorites but like Andrew mentioned this fall season has a bunch of sequels some newer some not so newer the top of the list being black clover season two if I'm not mistaken we're coming up on

19:59five or six years of a gap yeah it's been a couple of years since the last the show first part ended um yeah reincarnated as a sword I think that is a personal favorite of mitzes and I think that is two or three years old now ramparts of ice is only I think a one season break because yeah yeah which is which is fine and I'm not mad about it getting a season two I like that manga because creations obviously between you and I are polar opposites and ramparts of ice both having one season break so clearly people saw the value in their works and wanted to adapt them quickly so kudos and they're well produced as well very well produced um blue your other favorites blue box uh I loved blue box I have red blue box uh from the start uh I was very happy with its adoption and er sorry adaptation and the other works and um the fact that they are so quick and I

21:06don't think it hurts that it's you know Netflix exclusive so they've got the Netflix money so obviously the production is going to be quicker and more efficient um I'll ask she's getting a second season did you want surprise me did you watch season one I like it it's a soccer anime I tend to watch those yeah I watched it I was I didn't think it was going to get a second season given how long it was because it didn't get the one year break I think it was like it's been at least two three years easily since I think the first season came out um one that's not on your list that I'm gonna mention um is a returner's magic should be special but that's right um yeah which I didn't think it was getting a second season it's been like four years I think since that show came out originally and you were right how she was 2022 yeah so it was just like holy cow I mean I didn't hate I didn't love that show in the sense that it's good I just enjoyed it because I like fantasy slop sometimes and I wasn't expecting it to get a second season because if it wasn't

22:09getting an immediate one I just assumed it was dead uh I think also what is it another one I think you I don't know if it's the fall as well I think it's um the ice sword guy the ice sword oh yes is also another season two that that show came out also like four or five years ago how like oh they're getting a second season as well holy cow yeah it is crazy yes the ice blade sorcerer shall rule the world yeah and that came I think the first season came out a little bit ages ago I normally would be a lot better at researching this but I'm on a laptop as mentioned out of town so my researching skills are a little limited and I don't want to move too many things around in fear of breaking everything okay you got me I'll be I'll be your sister and the answer to the question is season one of ice blade sorcerer was 2023 winter and surprisingly

23:10not very well received it only has a 6.36 and it's the 1277th most popular anime so this is certainly a choice for season two yeah yeah I mean there's a lot of waifus in it it's it's one of those herm style shows which is why I never got into it um but you have some other shows on the list that I do I do want to mention as well togan anki is getting a season two and I think that's only a one season break as well if I'm not mistaken I want to say it was we should a winter a winter anime um and then the last one on my list that's also getting season two is the detective is already dead which I don't remember that one even being super special like I was when I saw that I was like wait a minute and then I looked in and I was like oh this is why it wasn't that special it's a 6.44 and it is from 2021 why a 6.44

24:13anime from 2021 is getting a season two I don't understand it is the 656th most popular anime ever but it's rating score ranks at 8,397th on now so it really begs the question why do they come up with these decisions like who picks what is getting its season two and why I don't understand don't understand well also just to before we get into our personal choices right other things that I found interesting shows like so apothecary diaries is getting a third season which I didn't think it was going to happen after the second season felt like it ended in a particular way there's the appraisal magic isekai getting a third season which also surprised me I didn't think that was actually going to happen as well and I mean obviously Rahn was getting its third season and

25:22what is Chitosekun ramen a both a Chitos say Ramone in the bottle it was a good part two I mean it's it was a very popular anime from I want to say it was a winter show and I mean it's another kind of I'm not going to call it a harem style anime it's like pretty handsome black-haired protagonist does things and is an overall good guy and all the girls love him which one will he choose it's it's kind of the basis for that show so it's nothing special um and just a piggyback on what you were saying not only is apothecary diaries getting a season three it's also getting a theatrical movie oh shit okay yeah I thought I was just getting a movie they also just announced a game an ace attorney style mystery game for apothecary diaries yeah I think that I saw that in the switch to rack and it's it's like okay I mean they have 14 volumes of light novel and the first

26:30couple of seasons I think have only adapted the first five or six so there's plenty of material to still go through and it's super super popular so that one doesn't surprise me also major one that you miss a season two that I'm surprised we're getting a season two but I'm also super excited for cyberpunk edgerunner season that's right out in october on Netflix so that's that's actually kind of crazy it's kind of crazy all the stuff we are getting as sequels I know we usually get a bunch but it just feels like a lot of things were from a couple years ago and we never you know usually if you don't hear anything for a couple of years it usually if it wasn't like immensely popular it usually means it's not getting a second seed so now we can talk about our complaints and make our cases for the anime that we feel are very deserving of a second season and yet here we are so I will start this and I feel that this candidate is at the top of a lot of

27:35people's lists so we are going to talk about my case for 86 and it's very simple this is the 279th highest rated anime of all time at 8.35 it is the 197th most popular anime based on people who have completed and rated the show it's critically acclaimed it's fan love it has 12 light novels of which only the first four have been adapted so there's more than enough material to keep going and if people want to complain about marketability you have robot tanks you have top tiered Y-Fus to include uh you know major Mili-Z so I am asking the universe why oh why do I have to have five seasons of rena girlfriend and I can't get a second season of 86

28:36Andrew what do you think about 86 deserving I've never seen 86 actually my god that is it is highly rated so I'm pretty surprised I haven't at this point because I think it's also a podcast favorite for a lot of the um a lot of people so I'm just curious let me just double check I'm I'm doing some uh psychic math okay it won't bring up the 86 it's fine um so yeah it is kind of crazy because given I think it was also fairly popular amongst people as well yeah it's member community on mall is over a million people oh here we go 86 it did again I got a part one in a part two but those are obviously you know the same season mm-hmm essentially yeah it looks really cool it

29:42looks really well set up it looks like the animation was pretty solid it was done by it was it done by again it was done by a one pictures one pictures so yeah it got it got the treatment I guess it just didn't make them enough money and DVD or Blu-ray sales which is kind of crazy maybe not enough waifu as I guess lies they're plenty you can pick they even have a little a lolly princess that that people can latch on to and it's not creepy in any way it's not ethy it's just a good military political story and it it continues on because I have read the light novels I haven't finished them yet but it's so much to adapt and it's so good and I don't understand how things like 6.44 detective is already dead are getting their second season and I can't get season two of of an absolute banger but I can't complain give it three more years

30:48arbitrary number give it three more years and we'll see the 86 anime project for it's okay maybe not three more years give it five more years for it's 10th anniversary animation project we've run out of ideas we're done with the whole webtoon bubble no more Korean well a manwa no more Chinese don't go all that kind of stuff we're doing we're going back to the good old stuff we're doing 86 so give it like five years it'll come back around we're due for a mecca style boom soon if the cycle works as it does right we just need that whatever the new reinvention of mecca is which by the way call back to our future what anime predictions episode me mason I think Caroline did a bunch of months ago okay so the anime I'm going to talk about all right let me just pull up my handy dandy list here and I just found another one when I was going

31:52through my anima list so actually before we do mine I was curious what was your thought process when picking the anime that you picked on your list I know you mentioned oh little bits here in there but like did you have a particular method you went about researching it or did you excuse me or did you just say I remember this show let's go for it I this is why I like it uh it it was more just the ones that are really close personal favorites of mine projects that I either continued with the manga or read more light novels so I know what is coming down the line and I wanted to see it completed and I just know that it hadn't been so these are just otaku's personal list of overlooked projects that should have a season two that he has pursued further down the line and that's pretty much where I got my list from what about you how'd you create

32:53choice yeah so as you know I do all of my planning in the last 15 minutes before we start the podcast always as one does and so I thought I would go simple go through my anime list and find a lot of the my nines and tens all right things that I really enjoyed and see which ones had a sequel or didn't I have some like honorable bull mentions that are kind of fun uh if you want I can go through that like I have an honorable mention I I really want to say or just a few like that yeah but uh and I went through that I'm like okay some of these got a sequel some of these have several seasons but like some of these are just mostly shows that I thought were really fun uh especially for the time and either just really should have gone a second season sooner but they just weren't doing second seasons or they didn't do as well or they just fit into my particular niche and I'm like I just want a second season of this even if nobody else watches it you know what I mean uh so I wasn't

33:56looking at things that are just good I was looking at things I enjoyed that may have also been good that I wanted to see more of so that is the thought process I went behind uh this one happened that I'm going okay so my honorable mention before I get into my like main one is for log horizon because I feel like that show first of all it was a miracle it got a second season because I didn't think it was gonna happen the fact that it got a third season was kind of crazy because that was a year's gap between them and the fact that the third season starts basically a much larger story and they just never give us a fourth fifth or sixth season is wild to me because that's also all to be fair you know why I didn't is because they didn't use database as the opening for the third season you should only ever use database for the opening to um to log horizon it's the only song that fits second season got it third season didn't uh for shame you've seen log horizon I imagine I have

34:56it's been it's been a little bit since I've seen it but I have seen it and I did enjoy it so I I think that's a perfectly viable candidate for getting more we need more we need more good stuff we need more good stuff yeah but my so the first show I'm going to talk about um it was one of the funny enough so it it was maybe first on list but it also one that jumped out at me that I felt deserved a second season for a long time and the manga I think is still running um it may not be as good at some point it gets a little drawn out but the show I'm going to talk about is skip beat have you heard of skip beat I have heard of skip beat yes so this is a fun little show show show from back in 2008 all right it was by a group called how filmmaker I don't even know if they still make things um maybe that's why but it's about essentially a girl who devoted herself to her childhood friend uh to help him become a uh a star and idol right and she basically believes she's

36:02in love with him and he believes he basically manipulates her and keeps using that to have her do all of his like house chores and take care of him and she basically dropped out of high school to go help him do all of this while he he went to become uh an idol or star or something to some effect right and so one day when she's just being nice after working multiple jobs as well to support him while he's doing the thing she runs into him talking to a one of his like managers and he basically says she's so stupid and she does everything for me and so she vows to get revenge by crushing him in the world of entertainment that he is in um and it's a really silly fun um at times very heartwarming you meet a lot of you know you there's enemies to lovers there's a little bit of everything and the show did end in like a nice spot but there was definitely more that could happen and would you

37:04like to know how much more there is uh the manga ran on for a while I think I don't know if it ended it's still ongoing the run I friend yeah but yeah that's the thing I want more it to be fair it is a monthly I'm pretty sure I don't think it's a weekly or if it's a weekly I don't know how they're still writing it and we've definitely gotten better shows on the entertainment industry but this one's a little bit more lighthearted it's a lot more fun it's definitely more comedy it's from 2008 so if you remember anime from that time period it's very much that that style uh if you look at the image on my anime list it looks very much like a show show in a lot of ways but it really does have crossover appeal for the most part and thus I think it's it's a fun show it's it's an 8.07 on mal it you know ranked fairly high I think people who watch it really will enjoy it and I think you know what either a remake of it with which with more seasons or a sequel to that

38:05first season would be amazing and just to further your justification not only is it ongoing it is a monthly manga it is uh licensed by viz and in english there are over 51 collected volumes so there's more than enough content to warrant oh yeah I kept reading it afterwards one of the few that I actually did well I think you've made your case very well for that one number two on my list I think it's one that is near and dear to me and I understand it's a tough argument to make because there isn't a ton of content however I would argue that if you have enough to release three OVA's and have acknowledged that there are parts that you just didn't adapt there is room and love in the fan base for this and I am talking about wo to koi love is hard for an otaku it's 7.91 and the 166th most popular anime of all time the first season if I'm not mistaken was

39:14in 2018 and was on amazon prime um it's just a delight uh it was one of the first anime that I watched that made me genuinely laugh out loud several times I thought it did a really nice job of capturing the japanese passion for cosplay while also demonstrating the hijinks and work-life balance of working with the person you're dating um and the the main couples are just chef's kiss I love this anime and I just even though there's not a lot more to adapt just just adapt everything that you got give us a solid season to tie it in a nice bow and call it a day but again I don't you know there are plenty of projects getting second and third seasons that I don't believe are deserving while you have shows that are in the top 200 of all time that can't get

40:16a second season just me and san yeah oh this is a fun show it's really silly it's very much it's always fun to see adults in anime uh or anime with adults in it sorry essentially because it feels a little more mature definitely while silly it definitely feels more mature it is what people tell me smoking behind the growth of the supermarket or whatever the convenience store anime is um I don't get that I get that what what I got what I want is more woa takoi and if we could have replaced which one we got I would have preferred a second season to woa takoi then you know smoking behind a convenience store but you know it was a fine anime we we passed it I think we passed it anyway it's it's a fine anime we passed it um but I think what a koi is just like a lot more fun

41:16and I definitely appeals more to the niche that we're in being otaku's ourselves and you know watching and you know finding love and whatnot I mean some of us have found love you know whatever you know but you know it's it's it's a fun show it's definitely it's very heartwarming it's very cool so uh I you're not gonna find any pushback from me sir all right so when you get next okay I have a list but also my list isn't complete because I have a bunch of things on things and whatnot but this one's funny because we talk about this one on the podcast every now and then it's always funny we all have our complaints uh for things that have happened with it post being done but it's yurion ice okay where's my second season first of all you never gave us the movie right we we were promised a movie we were promised a movie right that's fine we would have happily taken a movie but now that you've taken so long I want a second season okay this is on like this is I don't know I think a lot of haters got to the score on mal it's a 7.9 on mal which is crazy the show is

42:21amazing amazing the show is great it's a lot of fun it's a really interesting dissection on competitiveness in a high at a high level in a sport uh the characters are really interesting they're all also really funny and have their own quirks and are sexy also in their own way we're talking about a show that was done by Mapa so it just looked good we're talking about a show that like basically everyone on their mother's kind of watch even though it is still pretty low on the list that isn't just your typical um uh shown in fair it is uh uh it can come off as gay baby but that's just because of how the Japanese are sometimes and it's just like a real win show and we and season two doesn't have to follow you know the uh uri and victor relationship it just needs to do more in that world and if they pop in and out and they're not the main characters that's perfectly fine I

43:22just want more uri on ice I want I want my pretty boys skating to really good music I want my king JJ I want all of that stuff and so yeah no uri on ice is one that I think as and don't get me wrong season one ends in a really good place and honestly if they did not promise us that movie I probably wouldn't be saying this I even though they did make that promise that's something my wife and I have been looking forward to for years and we were just as disappointed as everybody else when we heard that they weren't going to be you know making the movie anymore um I think that that world is compelling and intriguing and I am with you we both just want more uri on ice was that manga adaption or is it like an original type thing it was an original work I think it's an original work it was uh yeah it was original I think they made some manga maybe based off of it

44:25um well and they did like a lot of random little things like a special here or there but no it was original work uh yeah it was yeah okay so basically anything that they do or decide to do with it would be original again and something nobody's seen yeah I think if they put that out they could like that is the perfect thing for theatrical drop like make make a good two hour movie drop it in theaters you will make money you will absolutely make money on that project oh yeah so I thought that was a fun one I mean we talk about it I think yeah the the I don't know what we scored it but I think uh I know for a fact back when like keep me going Chucky around the podcast I think they gave it high score or something to that fact I could also be misremembering uh I will find out later at the point where somebody yells at me for saying the wrong thing so yeah it was yeah you were gonna ace that's that's my pick that's that's why I say um so do you want to do one more each yeah

45:34that'll work let's do one more each because I'm gonna skip to my last one which I feel particularly passionate about as to why we don't have a season two um so for me this is my personal favorite uh on my list too many losing heroines or machina I loved season one I thought it was beautifully drawn I thought the characters were all very compelling and funny and juvenile and the dynamic between Anna and Nukumizo is just top tier uh I also know that there's at least five more light novels that could be adapted so it's not like there isn't material there for them to adapt I need more of that world and I cannot in my mind's eye knowing how popular it is because if you go into look at it

46:36it is rated in 8.07 and I know that it was critically claimed everybody that I talked to that watched it loved it given me a season two of that show right now or else and that is all I'll say give it to me right now okay I haven't seen that one either as so no worries there uh you speak highly of it uh after we get through whatever it is I'm talking about in the uh well we'll talk about it in the hobby addicts so you know one one of the extra things you get if you become a member of the podcast a lot of interesting things will explain why I can't just start a new anime right now but it seems like what I might look into because you do seem a little bit very pat a little very passionate about it so that is awesome to hear all right my last show before we go into the I guess in show trivia question slash break uh as we call it on the podcast um

48:46engineer and his whole goal is to pilot mecha and then he becomes a mecha engineer he develops a whole bunch of things with with mecha and it's all in this fantasy magic based world it's really fun I really enjoyed it they set up uh there's definitely setup for more their light novels continue I don't want to read the light novels because I just don't feel like it feels the same but there is something about watching this mecha nerd doing the making robots in a fantasy setting that just tickled my nerves and I wanted to see more of it and it's a lot of fun I don't care what it's rated on Mal people are wrong I don't think it's highly rated I'm just gonna I have a look I don't know what a look I'm looking now I'm looking now I'm looking now it's a seven it's fine yeah that's not a terrible it means it's fine yeah so people thought it was fine uh let me tell you one thing off the break I've never seen this but let me tell you one thing I instantly appreciate about this

This week's mailbag is brought to you by Soul King Sensei, who says, Hey, addicts, I was wondering, do any of you have a hear me out show or character? One that you really enjoy, but most people don't like. For an anime example, there's Lazarus or my dear friend, Nookotin. Thanks, peace, love, and anime. Well, I will go first. This is a very, very easy hear me out. And I've explained my fandom runs deep for this franchise. As I've read every like novel put out,

56:09people hate the main character. The show has been called problematic, believe me, I get it. But, Mushoku Sensei, now and forever will be my hear me out show. And here's why, if you can separate the fact that we are dealing with a clearly disturbed individual who gets reincarnated into this world, Rudy is great at, he is a very imperfect main character. But at the end of the day, I also believe he is just trying to survive in this world he has been sent to. And the thing that I will die on, I'll be that meme of the guy in the painting in a town hall setting where he's standing up, saying something and everybody's looking at him. Mushoku Sensei excels at world building in ways that many franchises just cannot.

57:09Yes, I understand that there are problematic themes and some things in there that don't sit well with people. I get it, but I will overlook some of those things because the product as a whole is very, very good. And I don't want to get into spoiler territories because they're in the middle of season three right now. And there's a lot more to come. Whatever your issues may be with polygamy and the fact that he is a reincarnated soul and he's older than the body he's put into, I get all that. But you cannot deny that on the surface, it is first rate fantasy, the magic, the world, the creatures, the races. It does so much well that I can move past the flaws of Rudyas Grayrat. Andrew, what do you have to add? You know what? It does have a lot of going behind it.

58:09So, you know what, I have my issues with it. I'll leave it at that. I have another show that's also somewhat problematic in some ways, but just also stupid for the most part. It's Becca and Tess, some in the beasts. It is a dumb show. And ultimately it is unfinished, but it's a lot of fun. It's really silly. The concept is kind of ridiculous, where basically your grades determine your summoning's power and you go through a bunch of challenges and it is so much fun. It has very, I don't even know if I can, it's very problematic and unproblematic. I guess at this point it would be non-binary representation with Hideyoshi as the one that is a guy, but everyone thinks it's a girl. And when you look at his gender, it's just Hideyoshi. I remember that was a fun moment. I had an anime club where I'm like, what does that actually say in Hideyoshi?

59:10Oh, his gender is Hideyoshi. Lovely. So, it's a really interesting show. It's a lot of fun. It's very heartwarming. It's also at the same time. And you kind of root for these lovable lugs anyway. So yeah, back on test, it's dumb and it could use more seasons, but hey, I enjoy whatever we got of it for the little that we did get of it. Have you seen it? Yeah, but you have my interest. You know how to sell something to me. So when you come up, and I also value your opinion. So if you say this is something that should be watched, I take that and I actually will pick it up at some point for sure. Yeah. All right. So let's get into the main review. So today, today we're talking about love through a prism or prism rondo as it's known in some circles. This is a show that you can watch on Netflix. It was released in winter of this year, 2026.

1:00:12And it was in the impressions were done by lady Emory and Caroline who ultimately decided to pass it. So this is not a listener's choice. This was one of our picks from that season. This is done by Studio Wit. And it is an original piece of work as well, similar to, you know, Yuri on ice as well. So the synopsis that I wrote, because I couldn't think of a really funny one for this one. I just wrote, life as a foreign art student in 1900s, England. You did add to this in early 1900s, Lunden, Lili Ichijoen, a Japanese exchange student, travels to England to enroll in the prestigious St. Thomas Art Academy, determined to become a painter. She arrives under pressure, her parents expect her to rise to the top of her class within six months or return home. Her drive intensifies when she encounters hit church, a gifted aristocratic student known for his talent and detachment.

1:01:14While kiddos devoted himself entirely to painting, Lili's sincerity and resilience begin to shift something in him, the two share a little below beyond their love for art, yet their relationship quickly becomes central to life at the Academy. What were your thoughts going into this show? So I am a fan of period pieces. And when I watched the PVs, I really was thinking like, okay, so this is kind of downtown Abbey the Anime. I was getting very tense. Down to Nabi. I was getting down to Nabi vibes. I expected what looked like Noble Boy meets normal girl love story, hijinks ensue, because you know, a boy of his class couldn't simply just date or be with a girl of her stature and nationality. You know, so that's what I was expecting.

1:02:14It looked beautiful. I was very excited to give it a chance. I just wanted to watch something that wasn't two seasons long, because I was coming on vacation. I hadn't started anything yet. I was going to go on vacation. It's been really busy at work. I hadn't had a chance to start it. And so something. And I just didn't want to watch two seasons of a show where I had to watch season one. So I could watch season two and just be all that kind of thing. Ultimately, this was a 20 episode show. So it wasn't that much shorter than watching a two season. But I felt like, you know, 20 episodes in one show, let's go for it. Let's do it. And it involves adults ostensibly in a period piece. So it looks like it could be something very interesting when you think about it. Because I, other than the PV, which during the picks episode that we did, I didn't, I didn't watch anything from the show essentially.

1:03:18It was just one of those things where the show existed. So yeah, no, it was a, but it and it seemed like a decent choice. So yeah, it looked like a fun time. And and jokes on you, it actually was two seasons. Because if you look at the timing of the episodes, the thing that I appreciate about, like a Netflix exclusive project is they can do what they want with it. So some of the episode lengths are far longer than 22 minutes. So they, they basically decided where to end that particular episode. Like the final episode is 37 minutes. There's a couple of 28 minute episodes. So I think when it was all said and done, it, it evens out to essentially a 24 episode anime. So they, they pulled you in for two seasons, whether you want to do or not. You got me. So damn. All right, I have to go close a door. But while I go close that door, tell everybody whether or not you recommend the show.

1:04:18You got it. So spoiler for your recommendation. It is beautifully animated. I personally have been to London and walked along the river themes. It really brought me back to that little journey I took with my wife for our fifth wedding anniversary. It looked and felt like London. I was incredibly happy with the way that they portrayed. London, England and I think that some of the themes that they explore, especially leading up to World War One and the ideas of No Bless of Bleage. It's easy. Yes, for me. Yes. Go watch it. I recommended. I'm a little bit more. Man on the show. I don't think I would say like I would recommend it in this sense that yeah, you should watch something like original works more often.

1:05:21And not just because they do. They're usually there's no source material. They get to tell usually a more complete story in what they're trying to do. It usually works out a little bit better more often than not. Like I said, look at something like Yuri on ice. So I would recommend it in that sense. I'm not like enthusiastically recommend it because there are some issues. I think I have with the show from what I think it portrays itself to be in a lot of the early facets. That it doesn't ultimately follow through on which we'll get into in like maybe a spoiler section or something. But and I also feel like the show itself doesn't delve deep enough into I think the philosophical debates of producing once art. I think there's a lot of tag lines is the best way I could put it in that. But it also feels that it doesn't. I feel like it either needed to go deeper into like art philosophy or deeper into romance. And I think it kind of does a little bit of both that it never really cement itself into what it wants to fully be.

1:06:26And I guess when I look at it through the lens of it being a like a period piece and which is sort of a smattering of what life was like during that time, which obviously it's not accurate. Like to that particular regard. That's not an issue like that's going to like make me say don't watch something like this right because just like the backgrounds that they do in a lot of it the art choices that they make at points. Totally makes it worth watching. This is quality work in more ways than not. So yeah, it's it's I would recommend it. It's not and it's not a bad watch, I think, but I well, I did I think I have some I. It felt like there are pacing issues. So before we go into spoilers because I want to I'm saying this in like, you know, led before we, you know, just tell people spoilers are coming, which not yet. Not where the drop does. And it's I thought the pacing of the show was inconsistent in a lot of ways where it felt like a lot of things were moving either too quickly or too slowly, but it never felt super deliberate after a certain point.

1:07:48You know what I mean. So the first. Because there's also a lot of time jumps as well. So it's a lot of it happened off screen some of these things, but there are moments that it's like in the first couple of episodes like where they go looking for the things like episode two even where they go looking for the Lily cave. Right. Yep. And they that's like a nice well, I think that's like a nice well-paced episode that a lot of the rest of the show seems to look like. Let's just jump ahead here or jump ahead there and we'll talk about these things. So I don't know what are your thoughts on the pacing of the show for the most part. So even though it didn't bother me as as much, I will acknowledge the end is rushed, especially the last three episodes because. You know, I think the hardest part for them is they're making a show that's half art, half romance and.

1:08:55War war one is just kind of there and they couldn't really focus on. That because trying to make a word war one epic is just too much having said that though the last three episodes did feel kind of like okay it's five years later and go and. You know just avoiding spoilers I could I could see people having issues with how those last three episodes went partially predictable but also it was just kind of like huh so that's how you decided to end it. But overall I still didn't really. Have many complaints about the show on the whole but yeah pacing pacing is definitely something I could see somebody taking issue with especially towards the end. Perfect so let's dive in deeper with a spoiler section I am vamping because I'm trying to write this time down.

1:10:12Sorry that was not that was all that was in fact not the soundtrack. So spoilers there's one thing that I feel I would be remiss if I didn't lead our discussion with the English voice cast was incredible. Everybody knows that I am a subtitle snob I prefer original Japanese voice actors so when I first watched this as it aired like as soon as it dropped my wife and I benched it all loved it but I told myself on the rewatch especially leading up for the show's discussion. I wanted to give the English double chance because I didn't know how they were going to do it but every single actor that they used was British English. The accents were exact like everything looked in sounded the way London is supposed to look in sound and I give them kudos and a ton of credit that they made sure to stay appropriately with accents matching area.

1:11:22So the English voice cast was a 10 out of 10 fantastic and did you have any thoughts on that on the dub. I only listened to the dub for a little bit because I was curious to see how they were going to do that whole thing and when I realized it was going to be. Because that's also I think I think I have an issue with the subtitle portion is that. You never get the impression that she's not a native English speaker right and you hear through there's also parts where they don't imply that they're either talking a different language or anything to that effect. In the Japanese version that they're all just speaking Japanese but the subtitleers didn't go to like in Japanese or whatever to show because otherwise it's just from in context like when later on they're on their way back from rescuing kit from imprisonment all in quotation marks.

1:12:31She says something in her sleep in Japanese and he's like. I you know I don't speak Japanese kind of thing and then you get things like where she shows up in a later like pretty early on he shows up pretty early on and the show to be fair and they're like oh your English is so good and they all sound like they're just native speaking all in Japanese. So I want to so when I listen to the dub for a little bit just because I was curious how Dorothy sounded how few of the characters sounded it all sounded like they all were it was like the Japanese version where they all sounded native so. I I didn't also the the Japanese dub was actually pretty solid and the characters weren't so out of place that it felt like I needed like there was a dissociation so I don't know if you've seen rising impact. No the golf show yeah so that one I started sub titled I had to switch it to the dub because when I was watching it there was characters from many different countries but they all just sounded Japanese and I just couldn't deal with it and the dub and it was another Netflix show the dub which is based off of manga but the dub itself gave everybody like some pretty racialized accents which I kind of.

1:13:51Appreciate it so the Americans sounded like they were from Texas the Chinese person sounded like Bruce or Jackie to add like but like a little bit thicker oh just enough to not be fully racist but just on the cusp so I didn't feel the need to but it did sound like the British like the British came off natural so I'm glad to hear that the dub was actually pretty good because you know we have a bunch of dub. There's a lot of us there's a lot of dubbers in this podcast that's right looking at you raggedy. But just production overall I thought the show looked beautiful. I have had the opportunity to grow up around the Smithsonian museums so I've had ready and free access to some of the finest museums. I have also been to the Louvre and I have been to the British Museum of history and I really do feel that this project is a love letter to the world apart.

1:15:10Maybe not in the sense of kind of like how Zen Shu is very focused around the idea of art integrating into the world that they're in because it's more of the isa guy but it does discuss a lot of the characters love for art in general and finding their own individual voice in the world of art be it as a painter as a drawer as a sculptor whatever it is. It really felt like a genuine love letter to the world of art that they kind of incorporated a pseudo love story in with it and I think they did a good job of creating magnetism between lily and kit. It's clear from the jump that they're interested in each other and kit is kind of trying to juggle being who he wants to be while being noble and lily is just like I have to be number one because I got to go back to Japan if I'm not number one and then it kind of moves from that to just finding their individual voices in the world of art and I thought it was done pretty well overall.

1:16:22What about you anything that stuck out to you? So like overall like I like like I mentioned in impressions, Carter and recommendations part. Overall the art is really interesting like all the art pieces that they show you look really nice and really like I really like how they look they look really good when you you believe when you they say this person is like a top tier artist. I believe it when you see the art that they pull out and it's really looks really good the thing you brought up the thing about romance right and I feel like that's a misleading tag in a lot of ways and it isn't it isn't because there is and you know we're in the spoiler section right so one of the funniest things and I really when I finish the show and I get to it is that at no point in this show do they ever tell each other that they love each other. And it's not like in like the like I get that they do like I get it. But it's not in the way where they see it in other ways which you kind of do in other ways but it's always in like this frustrating like you know that's not what I want to say I'm going to hit you in like a thing right you fool that that's that's not I love you.

1:17:36He's literally leaving on a boat to go to war and you in your parting word is you fool. Yeah so it was just it that it didn't like bug me in a particular way which is I kind of funny and the romance element really only ever comes into play for realsies during the Catherine arc who. Goes from being not my least favorite character but even then like my least favorite character only in the sense that all the other characters are pretty likable to begin with even like in general to being one of my favorite characters because there's like a ton of growth in her arc and you kind of you do get to see that happen she does question like her her thing. So yeah I really did like the characters a whole lot they felt. In an interesting way they felt as 2d as they did 3d in terms of like development they felt very.

1:18:38Propy and one note but there was just enough. To make it 3d almost like the to bring up something in the show the painting that she paints for her final thing with the the variations of white that when you hit some specific like see the image that's what the character sort of felt like a lot of the times like they felt. Sort of one note until they weren't one note which was kind of nice. I also liked how she pretty much her her project that really got people's attention was she drew the first cartoon essentially like like the motion like just drawing after drawings if you flip the pages it creates a moving picture and people were just blown away by how that was and just the fact that. Kit was the one who submitted it on her behalf she wasn't even planning to turn it in and. I'm with you I'm a little frustrated that it's an anime with adults and you don't get a kiss until the very very end of the show like literally the end of the show is when they finally kiss but it's nice to know.

1:19:54That they end up together in the end and they travel the world together to look at look at art and like when they do that little flash forward again at the very end after the credits and you see everybody in the future like or you know kitten will be coming no there somewhere in the asias and i'm just like. Yeah I could see that that's the life they live is they just travel world finding stuff that they want to paint or draw like I was satisfied with that part. Yeah and ultimately the end they bring this up as the thesis right for the show partway through is freedom is like the main thesis right what do you want to do what do you want to paint right what do you want to do in the world what do you want to exist as right so for some people like Peter one of the you know I like. And honestly this is another thing I like the representation of England that they did it like you mentioned in terms of like character designs you get a little bit of everything Peter's darker skin right he clearly is probably from one of the commonwealth countries or one of the former British colonies kind of thing and and he's a darker.

1:21:14Like skin tone it yeah I got the vibe that he was like Indian that that was that was my. Yeah or you know Dorothy with her orange hair and joffrey with his red hair being a minor noble and you know it was kind of nice to see those kinds of things I liked a lot of the character designs in that regard but just like how dorthy freedom. And it's really nice so when they go back to dorthy's hometown dorthy's like well i'm going to marry a local guy and like and and Lily goes well I thought you were in love with joffrey yeah I am I am it's just can you ever see him living a life here. And no so I think for the what's best for both of us is this and i'll always kind of love him in that particular way which is like a very mature thing to say to do and you think it's going to be a crux for what and what part of what annoys me about is that you think it would be a crux for Lily to finally admit her true feelings and then she does it and so you're like well that was a really nice mature scene and then you kind of don't follow up on it and I think that plays in a little bit into the pacing.

1:22:27Into the pacing issues I felt with the show more often than not yeah so yeah or Peter not what what realizing he's at he's plateaued he is at the limit of what he can do artistically so he'd rather support art in a different way I like that all the characters were kind of different joffrey is a noble kid he he's just doing this for shits and giggles he's going to go do whatever he wants afterwards you know not everyone takes it as seriously as like the three prodigies in the room. Essentially lily shin and kit but it doesn't make their art or what they want to do or their version of freedom any less valid and I thought that was like a really fun nice message of the show. I actually very much agree with what you just said um I I appreciate the fact that the show was able to kind of give us each of the side characters like.

1:23:27Where they wanted to go where they wanted to end up and and but we also got to actually see it in action at the end I thought it was a nice little. Like I said when they do that little after credit scene it was just a nice kind of parting gift like where is everybody now and it's very rare that we get an animation project. That gives you a beginning middle and and. Pacing issues aside I enjoyed the fact that there was like a true conclusion and you can kind of run with what everybody was do would do from there but you kind of got to see the culmination of what they became as adults and it was just. A pacing aside I still think it stuck the landing when it was all set and done which is why it's such an easy recommendation as a yes for me because not only is it a romance story with adults but it's a completed romance story with adults and it's just something that is so rare in the anime like.

1:24:30It was just really refreshing to be able to sit down and watch a show and not have a beach episode a student council arc class class project arc it like just the normal tropes that we get sucked into in about 80% of the shows that we have to watch it was just such a refreshing change of pace and I think that that's really why I walked away from it enjoying it as much as I did. It was an enjoyable show I think at the end of the day there is a lot to get out of the show and I think it is a fun slower pace show it's not super actiony and it does a lot of nice things and there's like a lot of nice beautiful artistic moments which is what you hope for a show about artists and art so that is ultimately good. Is there any other themes in the show that you found fascinating or thought you wanted to delve into?

1:25:35I think it definitely touched on one's place in society like talking about the class system that exists over there you know and bringing up like when they're at the dinner party at kids childhood home you know they're some of the boys want to try and talk to the women and they're like who they are. Who are you and they're like oh I'm a you know this is my family name and they immediately dismiss talking to them and it's just like yeah they really kind of captured the the royalty and class system of England pretty well I just really enjoyed that kids dad was such a kind soul. Well this older brother was just this massive dick who was all about no less of these like you you are a noble you should do X and Y and Z and you shouldn't do this this this and this and it's dad's like he likes to draw I'm okay with that I'll make sure that he can do that so it's just a nice dichotomy between older brother being so firmly entrenched in that culture and that part of English society.

1:26:48And his dad you know being a count or a duke and he's just like the kid wants to draw a lot of them draw. It was it as somebody who has watched Downton Abbey I've watched some of Bridgerton with my wife and I've watched almost every period piece that I can get my hands on between like sense and sensibility and pride and prejudice and all of that stuff. It was just it was nice to see that they not only touched on it but they portrayed it accurately so it was it was a nice bonus for me for the period piece. Awesome awesome awesome. I feel like I oh yeah okay so before we like and let's talk about the ending. Yeah so one of the funny things I found about the ending was that it was simultaneously rushed and slow at the same time. It felt plotting in a way that either this needed to be more episodes for this to feel like it fits but mostly it was more like actually didn't need to be more like the show itself needs to be more episodes for it to fit in.

1:27:59It felt like it probably could have been done in make two episodes maybe even one episode and it felt and I like the choice that they did to make it black and white. Well or at least put a black and white filter over it. But ultimately it just felt you could have reduced this down a little bit to make it feel more appropriately paced with the rest of the show and then have an epilogue episode if you want to or like a longer epilogue or something to that effect which yeah it was it was interesting. I was going to say like I wasn't sure if they were going to pull an oki doke on us and actually have kid killed at war and then she just ends up marrying shin at no point did I ever see her like shin is a real option for for Lily like she he was just kind of hey there's this Japanese boy who's here but I never saw him as a viable match for Lily.

1:29:06Because the show never attempts to become engaged just because yeah essentially and you can tell he's mostly doing it out of his own sense of duty and he's like he does love this girl and her art and he knows that if he ultimately understands that if there was a choice he was never getting picked. But he still cares for this person which is it's lovely it's lovely but yeah. All right well I don't think I really have anything more to add so I think we can score this do you want to go first do you want me to go first. I'll go first because you're going to give it a probably a better score than I will okay not okay so the show ultimately is awkwardly paced but that's why art is a very mutable crazy action. It's a so teric thing while also being a very tangible part of life to quote Shakespeare insert Shakespeare quote here because I don't I can't quote Shakespeare because I don't know Shakespeare enough to quote it but you know and we can go on a long diatribe about it like a professor brand.

1:30:17It's a really interesting look at freedom through art and with the backdrop of night early 1900s England right before pre and post war with a bunch of artists who for the most part in most context would have just enjoyed a nice care free life had nothing crazy it ever happened but they might be a lot more interesting. It's a really crazy it ever happened but they might have ultimately been sadder but ultimately found the way that they were going forward all to say that this show was really beautiful in a lot of ways really basic in a lot of other ways I did enjoy the soundtrack behind it it was subtle yet and present but without ever feeling overbearing which is why I guess I said subtle in the first place so I will give it three and a half. White lilies out of five.

1:31:20Okay I that's higher than I thought you were going to give it to be honest I thought it was going to probably land at about a three for you but I think I've pretty much touched on the strengths of the show. Great dove aside it's a lovely project that has finality it touches on mature themes and if you like your period pieces if you like your romance resolved and you enjoy something that is not the normal tropes of anime this is definitely the show for you I think it does a lot. Right way more than it does wrong and because it does have some pacing issues and there are some frustrations around how they get to the conclusion I am going to score this for missed opportunities to say I love you out of five.
