A Two-Minute Way to Finally Look at the Number You're Avoiding

7 Good Minutes

About this episode

If there's a bill or an account balance you've been avoiding, this episode gives you a two-minute way to finally look at it.

You'll pick one account or one bill, decide in advance exactly what you'll do no matter what the number says, then open it, read that one number, write it down, and follow through on the small step you already chose. It's a simple way to turn a vague, heavy worry into one known fact and one completed action.

Clyde Lee Dennis here with today's episode of Seven Good Minutes Extra. In this morning's episode, I talked about why we avoid checking a stressful balance or bill and why the dread of looking is almost always bigger than what we actually find. Here's a small way to interrupt that avoidance today. It's called the one number look and it works in four steps. First, pick one account. Not your whole financial picture, just one. The checking account you use most or the one bill sitting on the counter. Second, before you open anything, decide your next step in advance, no matter what the number says. Keep it small. Something like whatever this says, I text my partner one line or whatever this says, I write it down and I'm done for today. Third, open it. Look at exactly one number, the balance or the amount do. That's the whole task. Fourth, write that number down somewhere,

a note on your phone, a sticky note on the counter. That step turns a vague dread into a known fact. Then do the small next step you already decided on. Nothing more today. A few minutes later, notice how you actually feel compared to how you expected to feel before you looked. That gap is usually the whole point. One more thing, if the number turns out more serious than expected, this exercise isn't meant to solve it on the spot. That's a conversation for later with someone you trust. Today's job was smaller, just to look and to know. Until next time, I'm Clyde Lee Dennis and this has been seven good minutes extra. Hi, this is Dave Roberts.
