I don't know what to make of the Rams, man. It does. There's no rule that says it. Just because they're, you know, they got these names on rosters. We've seen it before in any number of sports super teams that do not perform up to their snuff. So yes, Arizona respect. They could be decent. But there's going to be

8:35at some point of fundamental cardinalness about them. That's going to regress. So listen, I always thought the four hours were going to be in the mix for sure. I still fear that Seattle young defense. They're going to be good. But the answer question is, did my mind change a little bit about week one? Sure. I thought that the Rams, even with the bad travel plan did not look best. Stafford might have gotten a little older overnight. So yes, it's changed a little bit. Obviously, the far as we're considered to be the third best team in the West going in. I'll go ahead and say, take the damn West. Why not? Let's go. There's my answer. You know, it's hard for me to say that my opinion hasn't changed after seeing how the 49ers dominated the Rams. But I do factor in the travel schedule, the jet lag and the fact that the game was played in Australia. So I don't think I've changed my opinion on the Rams. I still think the Rams are going to be one of the best teams in football. I'm not going to write them out. You put it out, even if Drew Locks playing quarterback. Seattle's still going to be in the conversation because of that defense. The cardinals, I don't want to overreact because of one week. So I'm

9:37going to say, no, my perception has not changed this entire time. I thought the NFC West would, once again, have three teams head to the postseason. I still think the Rams, Seahawks and Niners are all going to be playing playoff football. So no, my opinion did not change, despite the fact that the 49ers dominated the Rams week one point goes to Merv because blank the Rams. There you go. Like the Rams. Plus I was do a point. Yeah, he's do a point after that Kono incident. Yeah, after the Kono. But I did, I did like that you that you threw Stafford under. He did look old. He looked old. I'm telling you. I can happen. So that prompted me to think, where does he rank in 49er history as far as the top defender? So

10:37here's the question is Fred Warner in your top five defenders in 49ers history. Oh, that's a hot and loaded question for the last 60 seconds on the show. Now off the top of my head, I start thinking about the Hall of Famers. Of course, you start that list with Ronnie Lot. Then you throw on Patrick Willis who will be talking to tomorrow morning. Got to throw BY on that list as well. And then you get into the conversation. If you do put Fred Warner above guys like Navara Bowman, Justin Smith, Alden Smith, Charles Haley, like the list goes on and on. Even if you want to throw D on on that list, even though his stint was short with the 49ers, but with all that being said, I have you Fred Warner as a future Hall of Famer. I've said that multiple times before. Is he ahead of Nick Bosa? Nick Bosa. I've also have on that list of a potential future Hall of Famer. He does have a defensive player of the year. Something Fred Warner does not have yet. But I'm saying when it's all said and done, Fred Warner will be considered a top five defensive player in 49er history. Man, so says the writer fan over here, dude. All right, Ronnie Lot obviously rules the

11:42roost. But though, as you mentioned Hall of Famers, you left out a couple Dave Wilcox, Paul Tonelli's favorite linebacker of all time. My old neighbor, Jimmy Johnson, the unbelievably classy cornerbackers in the off and you mentioned BY, you mentioned Willis, you mentioned Haley. That's six right there. Does Fred Warner crack that? The answer is yes. He's that good. He is phenomenal. He's getting better and better where he ranks. I'm not quite sure who I bump out. I'm not, I hate to do this to Tonelli and Dave Wilcox, but I think you got to put Warner ahead of him. I don't know what you do about a Charles Haley. He was here so briefly. Man, Fred Warner, I can't bump out Pat Willis, but Warner just passed him in the old time tackles this. So maybe I do bump out Pat Willis. They're going to try to chip away at that again today at 1240 at 1215 pardon me St. Louis time 1015 our time 915 pregame as play as Anthony Molina get to chance on the mound last night. It was played tidwell, but Mike on the UMA guest line first and foremost good morning to you. Great to have you and second of all, wow, Bryce Eldridge. Mike 461. We've talked to you about him at various times throughout the summer and even lately, but he just keeps doing things that impress us. And Mike, he's like joining these lists of giant greats Mel Oat, Willie Mays, Orlando, Subheda of age 21 or younger with that many home runs. And then last night, I think the longest non-cours field homer by any giant this year. So I'm just gush and Mike and I'm just telling you, are you seeing even more stuff from this guy as he plays deeper into the season? Well, I mean it's all because of the bad. And you know, we saw really at a pretty early

15:55point in his career where, you know, he just relax and he has such incredible belief about his abilities. And you know, you're looking at this guy 21 years old and he does things that it takes time to learn. But what I think his foundation is is the inside part of the play. I mean, you just don't normally talk about that when the guy 6, 7. But he is really good at being able to pick or the ball that's on his hands and point or even off the plate in. So that's remarkable. I mean, that just makes everybody shake their head going, who is this guy? And he just takes it all and stride. I loved it last night. I mean, there was an opportunity where the runner on and he comes up, boom, to nothing. And it just kind of relaxed their body on the bench. I thought the advice that they had last night up and down the lineup really pretty solid. And it really was reflected in the score obviously. But you know, right now with Devers out, Eldridge has elevated into the center

16:57piece of that lineup. And everybody is pulling off this confidence. That's what a player that has the unusual abilities can do. Everybody looks and everybody sees why this guy is successful. But when he's doing it, it rubs off. It makes everybody better. It elevates everybody. And you know, he's going to have, I mean, he's having a great year. I mean, this is turning out to be a great year for this guy. I mean, and it looks to me like as the season progresses, I mean, he's got better. And I mean, you go to the numbers that will Clark had it in 1986, his rookie year and take a look at what, what else is his done? And will got hurt. He didn't play the last five or six weeks or whatever. But there's a lot of similarities to it. And then of course, we'll just go off and even have it. And I think the same thing is going to happen to Eldridge. I think he's going to be a monster in this game. Yeah. And that was one hell of a home run last night. And Mike, we all know that everybody loves the long ball. But you know that the morning show loves the bun. So moving on

18:00from Bryce Eldridge to Jonah Cox, who once again laid down a bump for base hit yesterday, the stat I heard on the radio yesterday is that he's five for eight on bunth attempts to seize him for base hits. He's also got 11 stolen bags. So just your thoughts on Jonah Cox, bring him back a style of baseball that seems like it's been missing here in San Francisco. Well, I think, you know, he's aware of his abilities and I think he's taking advantage of it. I mean, how many times have you seen guys that came up and had unbelievable speed that didn't know how to but and I'll give you an example of what we first saw Grant McCray. He had great great speed, but he didn't know how to well, he worked hard to become a butter and he still has a ways to go, but I mean, he's taking advantage of his abilities. And this is something that that Jonah Cox has realized, you know, that my legs are by strength. There's my strength on defense is my strength on the base pass and just by strength and being able to get on base when I'm in a cold streak. When I'm not hitting the ball, I can bump. I can push a bump. Now, you know, now he's learning how to drag a bump,

19:01depending on, you know, pictures and, you know, in situation. These are things that take a little time. I mean, I'd love to have him sit down with Dwight Kuiper who was a great butter. And you knew that he was going to bun at least once or twice in a game and he had excellent back control. We saw Taylor that ball play with Padre over the weekend. He's an excellent butter and what it does to defense. It completely disrupts the picture. It disrupts the concentration of a defense or the guy can do what the runners can do. And now that we're seeing Cox take advantage of it, I mean, I think right now you judge him with a lot of things in this game, but on base person, it's just going to be really big. Even more important than batting average for this guy. And if you can get on back, but with a base by because of walks and burns, I mean, you're going to play a lot of baseball. So I'm really excited for this kid. So I'm really liking what I'm seeing here. Now, Mike, I'm doing some quick math here,

20:04going back to after they got back from Boston. The giants are, if I do this right, they're eating their 10 and I think they're like 10 and 10. I mean, listen, it's five. They're right around 500 in their last 20, something like that. And, you know, nobody wants to be 500. That's what they were the last few years, but it's better than it was the previous four months, right? And they are energetic and they're stealing bags and they're bunting and they're, they're also, as you pointed out to us, I think the other day, they're coming back, even in games they're losing, they're coming back and threatening like late in the game, which they didn't do earlier in the year. I guess my big picture question is, is there anything the old vets, the Chapman's, the Adamisys, the, I'll throw Casey Schmidt in there. All the guys who've been sidelined. Is there anything they're seeing from these kids that they need to be better at next year? Oh, yeah. I mean, talent, let's try that with capital letters. Nothing makes a player better

21:05than talent coming up threatening to take his job. So what is, what is better in the eyes of a fan? 500 with veterans or 500 with a bunch of kids. When you see 500 with a bunch of kids, there's energy. When you're at 500 as a veteran team, the energy is, it's C plus rated. I mean, it's, it's 500. It's, it's, it's so, so. But when you're seeing it coming out of, of your young players, you know, you start to imagine the future with these guys because you know they're going to get better. They're learning to speed. They're learning this level. They're getting established and learning their, their, their opponents stuff. And you think, well, gee, they get that knowledge of how much better they're going to be. Well, they're going to be better. Well, they're going to be better than 500. Well, that means you're going to be, you're going to be worthy of a possible run for a playoff spot. So when you have this coming from your, from your organization, from your mind on the system, that puts enormous pressure on the guys who are there. Because

22:06there's not one guy in that, in that, in that clubhouse, that's a veteran. That doesn't want to be the guy that doesn't want to justify the contract and justify the numbers it takes to justify that contract. And when you have young players who are realistically threatening to take your job, that lights a fuse. And that is, there's nothing healthy on a big, great clubhouse and that nothing. Mike, last night we saw Blade Tidwell throw six and two thirds innings. That's the deepest he's worked into a game at the big league level. Did you notice anything different by the way that Blade Tidwell attacked the strikes on last night? I thought it was fantastic. And I thought he was really good at keeping it down. When he made, when he missed with it, he was below the strikes on nothing heard him. You know, when he's had problems with his stuff, that slider oftentimes has been lazy. And it lingers in the, in the strikes zone. And he gets hit. And you have to make the, the corrections. When you talk to a pitching coach after a game, they're going to value your stuff.

23:06And they're going to go back and they're going to be able to show you where you statistically put the ball in the strike zone. And if you're having a, a, a percentage of, of inefficient location, it's going to easily explain that you had an outing where you went forward a third gave up five or six runs. The other thing to do about, about when it always goes in and in hand, when you're, elevating, elevating when you're striking up, it's just like the slider or a sinker. When that thing starts to come up, you know, all of a sudden your EIRA starts to go up there with it. And then you realize, oh, wait, this isn't a good pitch today. I can't, I can't challenge. I can't throw it where I want to. And you start to nibble. Now you're behind the counter. It's just snowballs. So when you correct pitch, like he has done with the slider, and I'll say you get it back, well, now I said you can pitch that that that's his, he's, he's conscious of that slider. And that makes every other pitch you have better. I thought what he did yesterday was, exemplary. And you know, what he's done and a lot of us really good outing, he's given

24:11it a run certainly and then he makes a correction. The times when he hasn't been able to pitch well, he hasn't been able to make the correction. So as you go forward, I mean, this guy is, is making strides to be better to improve the pitch consistently and at least try to. And certainly yesterday was a good steady stone in that regard. For sure, he may get, I don't know, he might get two more stars, certainly one more. And he's somebody who needs to kind of earn that, earn that respect from the Giants brass as they evaluate him. Mike, we delayed to the most important question of the day. Marcus went down to San Jose last night, which is cool to see the San Jose Giants and their playoff and they won. And, and three pitchers through a combined no hitter. And Marcus was excited because he was there. And I was, like, he told me about it and I was like, yeah, nah. And it did, ignited a debate. Is it combined to no hitter in exciting and thrilling and memorable baseball moment? My argument was I would rather see a complete game to hitter by one man than a combined no hitter

25:15by three men. Mike, where do you come in? I can't argue with you. The complete game thing is just, it's just sad. There's to what's happened to it. And you know the sadness is that this generation of players wants those complete games. They want to be able to throw a complete game no hitter. They want to throw a shutout. But it's been going on for so long now. I mean, you think, go take a look at, at Berländer. I mean, Berländer is going to be a first-bound Hall of Famer, in my opinion. You take a look, I was looking at the stats one day and I'm going, she, how many complete games does she have? How many shutouts? And I'm thinking myself, holy, I have more than him. How is that even possible? I mean, in the grand scheme of the, you start talking about Berländer and me and our abilities, and I can't even be in the same cab with the guy. But yet, I had more complete games and shutouts. And you're talking about a warrior. And the same thing can be said about, you know, Bumgarner, say, they just took away the ability to throw 125 to 140 pitches, which

26:18takes the complete game. And it takes away stats that were coveted, that defined pitchers. And God, guys in the Hall of Fame shutouts and complete games. And now it's no longer possible. But I think the biggest sin of all is that in doing all this and limiting the amount of pitches that they throw, you've taken away no hitters and perfect games. They just, and when you do see a combined no hitter, I agree with you. It's like, man, okay. We're rooting Marcus's night. You have a good time out there. My point is I agree with you guys. I love me a workhorse. I would rather see a no hitter or complete game at the major level. But it was cool to see at the minor league level where guys don't have the longest leashes and to see a young prospect like Arhenius Kymaya, who's a top 20 prospect in the giant system. They go five shutout innings with seven strikeouts. Then the combined no hitter was completed by two pitchers who were drafted this year in 2026 by Buster Posey and Zach Manassian. So I guess just big picture Mike, like, how important

27:21are those moments for these young guys in the minor leagues because you look at the San Jose giants, you look at the river cats and the flying squirrels. They're all playing playoff baseball right now. Like how big are these moments? Kono or no Kono combined. Well, they really are big and they're big for a number of reasons. Number one, you're aware of the no hitter. You're going out there and you're trying to get that note. That's a big point. When you're going into a deeper into the playoffs, when you have a team that puts out an effort like that collectively as a group, I mean, that's really valuable. So I think there's a lot of merit to it. I mean, I really shouldn't be as hard as I am on it. I'm just a little picture from a different generation, but this generation that they're doing what they're they're being allowed to do. And in doing that because of the new set of rules as to how far they can go and how many pitches they can throw because they're trying to protect these kids. When they do have a no hitter, it is a big deal and it's a big deal because the pictures in that game felt the pressure of the no hitter. And then you say, well, how did they respond to that?

28:25So if a guy can respond to that, well, he can respond to a ninth inning and possibly as a closure close enough again, or he can respond to as a as a starter who is capable of getting a professional hitter out to and three times a night. So those are there are big things you get to take out of a collective effort like that, but it certainly doesn't hurt their momentum going into the playoffs either. Yeah, it's fun to see what's going on in the young in the lower levels there. Hey, just because we love talking ball with you. This is a non-giants incident. I don't know if you saw it, but Pete Alonzo for the Orioles was it city field in New York, old Shay Stadium area and hit his 300th career home run. Now it happened to be a game tying home run against the Mets in the ninth inning. You'd think that would hurt a Mets fans heart instead. Mike, these fans, and you played against them. You were in New York. These fans gave him a road curtain call. That's pretty extraordinary, I think. And after the game, there's a really neat online clip of

29:26these three New York fans. They're in their late 20s. Two of them are wearing Pete Alonzo jerseys. They caught the ball. And Alonzo gave him so much time. He spent all this time with them, autographed all their jerseys, autographed all their bats, brought them out three cans of beer, and they all took pictures. Now it's kind of thinking, yeah, that could maybe happen in basketball or hockey, but not probably not football, but it might be only in baseball. So I don't know if you saw any of that or had any reaction to that whole thing with the fans, road curtain calls, and then Alonzo's a treatment of those guys. Well, I did see it. I watched this this morning and the good for him. I mean, 300 miles down. He's definitely going to get 500 in his career. Just one of the great contemporary sluggers. And he didn't want to leave New York. He loved New York. He was a Met. Broke his heart that he had to go. And it broke the hearts of the fans. And this was a guy who was enormously popular with the every man of the city. And yet, I mean, Baltimore embraced

30:30him and brought him in. And he's done well. And he got off to a slow start. He was press and he was out of, he was out of whack. He was missing his comfort zone. So when you go back to a city, and you get somewhat of an ovation, it's a big deal. When you get a standing ovation, when you get a curtain call, that's that's so rare and it's so cool. I just, it was, it was just you could just look at the look on his face. It was it wasn't satisfaction. It was just a renewal of a love that they have for this guy. And that meant that meant the world to him. And he'll never forget those fans. That relationship that he had that the career that he had New York, that'll never never never be forgotten by the best fans. They're great fans. And and Peter Lonson will always be a hero there. Great moment really for the game of baseball and for their fans. Did you when you went back to Riggly, did you get some old fans or remember you and give you a little special love? I did. And you know, it was funny because I was worried

31:33about it going in. But it wasn't my idea to get traded to the Phillies. I mean, and on the way out, I mean, I made sure that that I let it be known in Chicago as a house special. Chicago was, Riggly Field was, and certainly the fans were, because they were remarkable. And I mean, and it it always, even when I came back as a broadcaster and I got a couple times to be able to sing the seventh and stretch, take me out to the ballgame, you know, they gave me a good welcome. And I never forgot it. It was something you're worried about. And then when you do get a little bit of a motivation that feels really, really good, you know, I tell you what the hell it's, when you're on a, when you come in and say you, you open up the season there, when you're with another team. And now you're standing on the baseline and they're reducing you as a, as a, as a giant, out of cup. You really kind of worried about how it's going to be received because however you receive, you're going to get buried by your teammates, right? One way or the other, you really can't win. But when you do get a nice ovation, it does mean something. They are having a fun time, even though

I should say the odds makers don't think much of Miami. The Niners are 13 and a half point favorites in this game. And you heard Raheem Morris talking about Fred Warner. Listen, the whole year last year was defined by the absence of Fred Warner and Nick Bosa somehow. Someway they went 12 and five and won a road playoff game, which was a remarkable season. Robert Sulling got a lot of love, but right out of the gate, we heard it over the summer. Raheem Morris has a way about him. He won a Super Bowl as a

38:58decordinator with the Rams. He's been a head coach in the NFL. He's won a Kyle's oldest pals. And you hear him talking with such great authority about this defense, about Fred Warner, who Walt asked us in the wide world of Walt. Is he a top 549er defensive player of all time? And I think we both said yes. It's hard to say no. I mean, dude, this guy, and he performed right out of the gate in week one, the peanut punch. He was flying around the first play of the game as Nick Bosa tossing offensive linemen into the trash can. Fred Warner almost came up with a pick on the very first play of the game. And then to your point, he's just flying around, sideline to sideline, the peanut punch, the gang tackle with Dre Greenlaw. Like, there were literally plays where he was just throwing his body around the field, launching himself like a missile making plays against the Rams. And, you know, obviously, this is that time. This is that nineer defense there that, you know, has their guys back right now and it has where he playing the DB's a little bit better. I'm just going to fire a warning shot. I know it may not come in week two against Miami, although Devon Hane will break one on you. Watch out, he will.

40:00But I'm going to be watching the D line. I'm going to be watching the run defense. I told you, I stumbled this morning onto a situation where Ramello height clapped back at coach Yak, who's a popular aggregator and he put PFF's grade for Ramello height, which wasn't good and Ramello height clapped back at him. And I was like, come on, we don't need any friction after a 27 to seven win over the Rams, but the D line. And you heard Matt Barrow say it to us yesterday. He said, if you're going to look at anything, look at the D line, they lost. We forget. I mean, they lost Alfred Collins, they lost Sam Okawano. It kind of got camouflage by the fact that the nineers controlled that game against the Rams, but there was I'm watching. I don't know if Miami's going to be the team that tests it, but no, but somebody's going to test that defensive line just like the Rams and the Seattle sea ox were able to do last season. And that's why it was a big question coming into the season. And that was probably the moment where I was the most concerned after the Brock Party interception when the 49ers are down seven to three and the Rams are starting to rip off

41:02chunk runs. And then for whatever reason, Sean McVeigh decided to have Matthew Stafford throw a terrible pass. Now it's Stafford that made the decision, but still even dialing up a pass play in that situation. 49ers got bailed up by Ronaldo Green making that play, but that still does not erase the image of the Rams. Move in the ball and running on them pretty damn easily. Now credit to Raheem Morris, who will implement more five man fronts. And there's also a little bit of optimism with the return of my kill Williams after the first four weeks of the season. So it should improve a little bit, but if there's a defensive lineman available on the trade market, that's something that the 49ers need to look into on my opinion. This is going to be a controlling story going into, I mean, the trade deadlines, I think probably in November, but this is going to be a case where if the 49ers perform as we expect and I'm looking at the schedule, it's not that hard guys. I mean, you pointed to third place schedule, dude. I mean, at Seattle, October 11, obviously, yeah,

42:02it'll be a tough. Yeah, all your division matchups are going to be tough. Even the Cardinals play you. Well, they have a road game at Atlanta. I mean, the Falcons look terrible in week one. Yeah, but I still get some concern about having B-John Robinson in the backfield. Not saying the Falcons are a better team, but like you look at B-John Robinson, you're looking at guy like Jeremiah Love with the Cardinals. Like they will face off against some good running backs. Now Game script is going to maybe take control and that's why the ramp stopped running the ball because there are down so many points, but still I think that would be one of the few concerns you have about this 49er team after week one. It's how that D line is going to hold up in the run game. What's looking like where the schedule gets real is December and really after thanksgiving November 29th, happy 19th birthday, Declan Murphy, November 29th, they play Seattle. Then they go, you all of a sudden, this is a game that when you looked at it in when the schedule came out, you're like, oh, yeah, no problem. At the New York Giants in early December. Here comes Cam. Well, John Harbaugh kind of made them look different in week one. Here, did you hear Mike Tomlin after that game where they

43:02beat the Cowboys? Mike Tomlin's not doing NBC Sunday night and he said, what did I see? I saw John Harbaugh football, man. He goes, I felt like I was watching the Ravens out there. You know, the toughness they had, the run game they had, all that stuff. The D line of scrimmage. I mean, it's crazy as John Harbaugh's summer video clips were. He still coaches hard-nosed football. Yeah, he's still one of the best coaches in the league. So that's a lot of sudden a tough road game. Yeah. And then the Rams come here. But then at the chargers, although they are. And then at Kansas City, you know, and then, and then the Eagles come here. So those are just December stat. Yeah. But that's what you want. That'll be the one that hopefully the Niles be playing their best and who knows they may have made a trade by then. Yeah. And that's when you look at that defensive line being tested because all of those teams are just named the Philadelphia Eagles, Sequan Barkley and Jalen Hertz, the Kansas City Chiefs. We just saw K-9 Kenneth Walker, the Super Bowl MVP run all over the Denver Broncos. You mentioned teams didn't even mention the Washington commanders and Jaden Daniels and what that running element from a quarterback will present a little bit of a different conversation. But yeah, to the original point, they will be tested

44:07on the ground this year. And it's going to be something that will keep an eye on every single week. I mean, we'll see what happens this week with Devon H. A. And three one says, it won't be the dolphins, but a trap game is looming with the Cardinals in week three. They got a crop crop, a good ball catchers, including I'm ad living here Kendrick born forever 49er. That's like Kendrick had a couple catches and a fresh rookie run by says I'm curious to see how Arizona hangs with the Seahawks this week. And that is an interesting game. Seattle without Sam Donald going on the road to place and play an Arizona team with a brand new coach, a La Flora who all of a sudden maybe they believe in themselves. I don't know. That'll be interesting. And Seattle's different away from Seattle. Yeah. And I would say like not to overlook the Cardinals because that would be playing into the trap game narrative. I'm actually looking ahead to that first matchup with the Seahawks and wondering if that would be a trap game against the Denver Broncos. Now the Denver Broncos could get their S together and look like a lot better team than what we saw Monday night. But the Denver Broncos are one of the team that has arguably the best offensive line in the entire NFL once again going back to the battle of the trenches. Yeah. So anyway, just wanted to get that Raheem Morris out there,
