He's walked 27, struck out 18, and has an earned run average of 4.95. But the Los Angeles Dodgers, they'll stand left-handed, Tommy John, who has now finished his warm up tosses and is in the Dodger dugout. John this spring is making his third appearance, his record all in one this spring, the Dodgers now take the field.

Send the LMR will hit seventh, and he'll play second base, batting eighth and doing the catching this afternoon, John Stevenson, and the starting pitcher for the California Angels, right-hander, and opening day pitcher Nolan Ryan. It will be very tough for the right-handed hitters to hit the ball with any distance at all the left. In fact, Joshua now moving in even closer, he's playing a pretty shallow left field for a right-handed hitter and a big swirl of dust is raised up behind home plate.

10:17A strike as an ease and Valentine, the whole day he could have hit that one, that big dust storm moving through the home plate where he had just as John delivered the ball. Cyclonic winds in this horseshoe stadium. Dick is very talking in the press room earlier before the game. Why this is the windiest day I have ever seen at Dodgers stadium. Never before have ever seen wind like this. And again, Valentine forced the back out of the batter's box as another swirling wind raises dust up around home plate. It was a circus during batting practice. The ball hit in the air and they'd start one field and end in another. John goes to first base for Barquets back easily. Johnny Rosebro touching it first and slowly bark it down a third. The end-fielder's especially will have to be alert on balls and normally would be routine flies to the outfield. There goes Barquets, the curveball inside, Yager's throw, not in time. Barquets feel second day.

11:19Grabby with a good jump. The pitch was the curveball inside. The kind of ball and a strike to Bobby Valentine. Grab Barquets with his second stolen base to the spring. So the angels in the first inning were the chance to get in front. John, blanky left hand, he looks back at second. Here's the pitch. Valentine looks at a ball O, two and one. John is working only two games this spring, official game. It's six-tening to loud, four runs and ten hits. So based upon that spring performance, John does not appear to be that ready to start the season. He's 6.885 pounds. Grabby with a good lead at second base. The two on delivery. Low three balls in a strike. John, a low ball pitcher, his ball sinks well. He is much like Clyde Wright however, he won't overpower you with his stuff. He has to hit the corner, his pick is fuzz.

12:19Last year, a fine ERA, 2.89. Grab Barquets away from second base. Bobby Valentine, a first inning going out. Three balls in a strike. John hands his sign. The pitch. Line foul into the lower deck down the right deal line. Final score, Boston defeated Detroit today, 6-5. Marty Patton getting the win over Joe Negro. The Dodgers got Arizona for games. Monday Tuesday in Wednesday, the angels back to Palm Springs tonight. And a little pit call, a little bit of an in this case, where Russell, the shortstop, ducks

17:31behind Grabakowitz and then breaks for a third and then they hope that the runner will take the bait and follow him and then a second basement loves breaking to the bag sharply, but Grabakowitz was alert. No play. One strike pitch, down low with a curveball, one and one and Tinson again was going to bun. The Angels trying to get a run on the board here in the first inning. After walks to Grabakowitz and Valentine, no, no, Doug Howard on deck. Here's the pitch, Penson squares and takes it low to throw by Yagan to second base and back head first, go to Grabakowitz ahead of the tag by Russell. Dodger Stadium right now, just like the big A down at Enahein, they brought in their fences here and it's quite noticeable being up here. It looks a little bit smaller. 395 now to centerfield, 385 in the L.A. 370 behind the Wrangler fielder. The pitch funded. And toward third, John has to play a third and he gets Grabakowitz. So, the sacrifice they held as John makes the play easily.

18:35Tinson did not hit the ball toward third base. He funded it sharply, but John had to move only a couple of steps off the hill to glove it and go on to third to McMullen for the fourth. Grabakowitz erased 1-5. Valentine to second base. Penson at first, one out and here's not field or Doug Howard. Adding 270. 10 hits, 37 at that. Doug, worrying number 4 in his back. Infield, set for two. John at the belt to pitch. Curbal, Ben's at the E. strike call. John, 29 years old. Oh and one on the spring. The runner goes, the pitch is inside to throw by Yagher's to second base and they got 10-5. Come up and that Penson gets in there. So, on the double field, Valentine was running, but Tinson didn't take it up quickly at all.

19:36Valentine had third base stolen so easily that Yagher didn't throw there, but he saw that Penson was very late breaking from first, so Yagher throw into second base and lobes covering. The ball bonded to him. Somebody was about 0-8, 19-feet in back of the bag and Penson was able to streak in on the blind side. Lobes didn't know he was coming. So, a double steel works. Howard is jammed and follows it on the ground pass for Dodger Doug out. You've got to say right there that was a very heads up play by the young catcher with a Dodger Steve Yagher. He saw that he had no chance for Valentine, but he did pick up Penson very quickly and had lobes maybe been a little bit more awake on the play. Why they would have had Penson trap between first and second. A ball and two strikes out of Howard. The pitch, Kerbal swung on a niff in one of the few times, all spring Howard strikes out and at the spot where you want him to make contact with a runner at third and only one out. That's only the third time in some 50 advances Howard is struck out. The runner sits second and third and Jim Spencer is the batter.

20:39John of course knows the angels well. While with the whites, actually 1-13 and lost 13 against the angels, but a ZRA was under two again. Kerbal looped foul out of play, back into the lower deck down the left heel line. So two walks and three stolen bases by the angels here in the first inning. But nothing to show for yet. Two outs, Valentine down the line from third, Penson away from second from the lineup. John's pitch Kerbal tapped up the first baseline. It is a foul ball. Foul ball just missed hitting the cone of the bag. Loved by Buckner and he had to use the out. Had it been ruled fair by first base umpire Don Deccanser. Go back to the play come Jim Spencer. Doug Rao getting in some work in the Dodger bullpen out in the left heel corner. Two strikes on Spencer. Tom John trying to work out of this first inning. The on field playing Spencer. That's straight away. David's a couple of steps into right center but John was hugging the line and left.

21:41The pitch Kerbal outside. One and two. John getting a lot of break on that curve sometimes when the wind is blowing in as strong as it is. It will flatten out the curve. John getting good action on it. The one two pitch inside with a fastball on the counter run even two two. Lee Stanton on deck. The wind just blowing very breastly. It's kind of shredded the California state flag out in center field. Kerbal low. Three and two. The Spencer with a full count Valentine claps his hands down a third base encouraging Spencer to get a base hit. Kensington ready to roll from second base. Yeager down the flashout to sign. John picks the ball out of his glove lines the three two pitch. Kerbal line drives center field base hit. Valentine's short here comes Kensington. Here comes Davis's throw to the plate. It's cut off. Throw to second base. The throw a buckner falls down as he tries to plant himself and fire to second and

22:44he angels lead to nothing on a line single to center by Jim Spencer. Right here. Spencer with his fifth and fifth star be eyes of the spring. Valentine's going from third. Kensington second base. Davis's throw would not have been in time to get Kensington. So Buckner tried to cut it off. But as he did so and tried to plant himself is a feet slipped out from beneath him. And he went to the back of the back of the ground. Spencer with the throw coming to the plate. Advancing to second. I believe Buckner would have gotten him had he been able to keep his feet. But when he fell to the ground, he had to just eat the ball. The Spencer at second base two outs to nothing angels. John with a count one strike. Stanton looks at way outside one and one. You get the feeling with the wind conditions we're going to have a high scoring ball game today. We haven't had that first high pop up yet. And I'm calling infielders hoping they won't be the first one. There's that change upstairs two and one.

23:45When you talk about wind conditions, you just can't overlook Rickley Field in Chicago. And that wind blows in or when it blows out, it is just unbelievable with that ball that wind can do with a ball. Another place candlestick. Two un-pitched outside three and one. And it has to bother the control of the pitcher too. It's very hard on a pitcher. So of course Tommy John here to this afternoon has not thrown that much this spring. As Jim Brewer, John had surgery on his elbow also. So he's been testing that out too. The three one delivery swung on and missed. The big cut by Stanton. Why the pitcher is half to 11 when you take up big swing today. Because it's on tone hitting a home run or very slim. If it happens, it would happen to right field where you would get a little boost with the wind. But the left field, I don't think King Kong could hit one out today. I'll back by Stanton three and two of the pitch. Here's the case right here with a left handed pitcher and the wind blowing so hard from the left field in towards the first base side. The left handed pitcher right handed hitter just so that change up up there and let them

24:47take their best shot to left field. Because like you say, I don't believe they're going to hit it out of here. Three and two. Spencer in second. The pitch to Stanton. Wayne Anderson was more or less in charge of all the pitchers working on their arms. And Wal in bad weather in Kendall's sick park in particular, he would never have you go out. He said no need to come out here and sit around in the wind. But we'd go back in the clubhouse and Wayne had the work on our arms. One two pitch outside with a breaking ball two and two. So you go down in the bullpen now and then just make brother next a little bit of those relief pitchers. Oh yeah, especially the night before you fit. What a mixture that they off. Get a good night's sleep. Feel good tomorrow. Two balls, two strikes, two outs, two on the pitch outside with a fast ball and three balls, two strikes, the runners will be going. John Stevenson would be next. It's Tommy John having a rough first inning. Nolan Ryan. This is not good for him either. It's been a long time since he threw his last warm up pitch.

29:55He said, he's had to sit down in that cold dugout. From that or now of almost 30 minutes since he finished warming up. John checks the runners and turns but no throw to second base. I had the feeling that Ryan may rely more on his basketball today. He told us that he was concerned that the curve ball would flatten out in this win. Ryan on the spring, this is his sixth game. He's pitch 21 innings, allowed nine runs and 19 hits. He's walked nine. So he's cut down that walk ratio.

32:59He struck out 15. That also is down from last year. The pitch, high and inside, three and o. And Loaf comes bounding out of the batter's box. Three and o. And Ryan hasn't come close to throwing a strike yet. Except his target from John Stevenson, here's the pitch. The high ball four. So just as John walked the lead off and rebuked with some poor pitches. So does Nolan. Loaf, lead off, hitter, baby loafs. Here's John Schoen, having a good spring, hitting three, eighteen. Ryan rubbing up a new baseball. John Stevenson, changing catchers' mittens. He's walked down toward the angel dugout in the way he's motion. He said, it might be, yeah, that's one of Wani's tips. And then he points us if they say go back on the clubhouse from my other gloves.

34:01So Stevenson back to home play. Ryan has walked a vlog so it's an outstanding runner, good base dealer. Robac was in on the grand to third base. Alamahar and Valentine looking for two up the middle, the pitch. The third of high, that's five on a roll, missed by Nolan Ryan. Bill Buckner, on deck. The pitch. Overall, the Angel took one nine times to dodge your six. Ryan with a count of all and two strikes. Joshua takes his time, plants himself in the batter's backs. Ryan the pitch, slung on, looped foul out of play. That went back into the second deck. As Doug out's go down in the national league, was there one that the players did like most? I would have to say it was one of the old cutting back stadiums, because you walked down into the dugout, but the roof was not very high. And you had to always duck to get down in there. 36:03And that's the first out. Rings up first, basement bill, black near a loaves, advancing to second place, based on the play. Buckner hitting 235. For a county-macked stadium, you had to get the sore back just to get into the hole. Well, you had to really bend over as you walked down the two stairs going into the dugout. Number one, it was some men, and sometimes your spikes would slip. But then you'd sit there and get excited, something that happened, you'd go to jump up, and there was many guys that cracked their head on that dugout. And I suppose this is about as big, and as comfortable as any in the national league, or at least when it was built, that was the case. Buckner swears around, the pitch is all the way to the screen. Loads takes third, even since coming all the way back to the screen, and you have to go a long distance. They get a ball, that's a buy-up. So, Loads, now in the wild pitch, is it third? So both pitchers were their troubles in the first inning. John, giving up two runs, and men that he had walked, and now I'll walk, and ground out in a wild pitch, and Loads in position to score, was only one hour.

45:29So the Angel 2 runs on one hit, they've had four walks from John. Don't you there's one run no hits as the man that Ryan walked eventually scored. There's our line drive back handed by Loeb. He throws the first double play. You can see the win, Crill that line drive right back to the second baseman. It started up the middle but as Loeb's broke to his right to win, Aided the flight right to the leather. He made a fine back handed catch and then the off balance back to first baseman and Stephenson halfway between first and second could not get back. So Gravacoitz blind into a four three double play and that's the second inning for the Angel 2 runs. Burles that one over the inside edge Crawford checks with third base coach Tommy. Let's order to see if he's swinging three and one Jim Gilliam down at first base for Los Angeles. The pitch. Right. Fastball. Put that one over the outside corner. I feel playing Crawford toward left center. The line down the three to pitch. Line foul out of play slicing back into the lower deck down in the left field corner.

That's one thing that any major league ball fair, any ball fair has to do. You have to check the element. You have to know what the element you're like going in. Proper goes, the pitch is blind to right field but standing at the line makes the catch about three feet in fair territory. So stand and playing perfectly for Russell, shallow and toward the line and the wind blowing it in that direction anyway.

56:51Valentine around first and he'll have to hold there as Davis gets the ball back in a hurry. So Valentine, as we've noticed, has been hitting that ball to the opposite field. And it could very well be an indication that Bobby knows that he's been in kind of a slump. And right now they say when you're in a slump that a lot of hitters will try and hit the ball back through the middle or hit it to the opposite field. And Bobby's been doing that this whole series. Veta Pinson now bunched up the third baseline. A good one. Ken McNeill is getting the handle. Valentine around second he'll stay right there. So the strong point of Ken McMullen, fair handing that ball down the third baseline. This time, Ken, not find the handle. That'll be a base hit for Pinson. Kind of dirty pool in a way. The angels know that McMullen has a bad back and they're going to see how bad it was. And he really just couldn't bend down that low. A mac swooping in with that bare handed pick up. He just couldn't get down to the grass tops and Pinson gets the best hit.

57:53Ken McMullen now doing a couple exercises over a third base. Infield and double play depth. As Doug Howard stands in, John's first pitch is a ground ball wide to McMullen. Rustle over to the hole. He goes to the lopes for one. Back to first, he'll be playing the dirt buckner knocks it down. But keeps it in play and Valentine cannot advance. The Howard on a fielder's choice Pinson out sticks to four. And the angels now have runners at the corner with one out. And the hitter will be Jim Spencer. While he was at Cleveland, in Chicago, 32 of them were as a starter. The first pitch to Stanton is a called strike. In 230 innings against the angels, his earned run average was 1.96, but his overall record was 13.13.

1:00:00There's a breaking pitch swung on a miss strike too. A 1.96 and 13.13 there was a little lean in those years, I think, with a white socks and Cleveland. John to the stretch, checks the runners at two strike fits just outside ball one. One ball two strikes now to Lee Stanton. And Finn goes back to Spencer at first base but Spencer did not get back to the bag in time. Had he done that, they very well could have had a play on Tommy John at first base. That's the first hit given up by Nolan Ryan.

1:05:14I can remember in Ebbetsfield many times Carl Farillo doing just that same thing. That short right field porch there in Ebbetsfield. Of course Carl had the great arm and he charged a ball and picked that thing up and fired it to Hodges at first base. And I'll tell you that was awfully embarrassing for a runner going down that line. Get a base hit to the right field now and send you a look up and you're throwing out. I'll go to the lead off hitter Dave Loaps who walked and scored the Dodgers only run. The first pitch is knocked him down ball one. Charlie Dresson used to say high neck in. Spencer not holding John at first. Here's the one open. It's curve ball drops in and over strike one call. Angel infield and double play depth. Grabarka which is third up in front of the bag in the cut of the grass. The one one pitch curve ball outside ball two.

1:06:16Two runs three hits. No errors for the angels. One run on one hit. No errors for the Dodgers run the last of the third. The next pitch of curve ball up over his head and he falls out of the way to count three and one. Just sitting here in between innings watching Nolan Ryan warm up. He took his eight pitches and threw he threw one curve ball and didn't throw it very well. Now he's throwing three curve balls one strike to a ball. The next pitch pass ball called strike. I think that's probably one of the most well one of the biggest faults you would see of major league pitches. When they give you those eight pitches out there in between innings, you should go out there and take advantage of all eight pitches because you got to get yourself back in that groove again. A groove is repetition and just to throw it for no reason at all, doesn't make too much sense. Three two pitch up high ball four and low throws are based on balls. Second time, low throws is blocked. That's the third base on balls given up by Ryan. You can see Nolan on that pitch rear back and really try to get an extra on the fastball and what he did, he overthrew it and threw it high.

1:07:21And that again, such a common ball than not just with Ryan, but any pitch you try to throw a little too much and you don't succeed at all. Upon Joshua now, they hit her. Spencer up at first, Caparca, which is third. Joshua not funding the fastball, taking up high for ball one. Out Joshua, steps out. Looks down at his third base. Goed to Tommy Lasorta. And beta pitch and made a great catch going away right at the 3.95 marker in center field. Ryan to the stretch, the two hope pitch breaking pitch outside ball three. 1:16:49There's a high five ball curling back to the right over the angel dug out, it'll go back and out of play about five rows. Don Sutton will even throw it. I'm not too sure whether any of them have had the success with it that Jim Brewer has. But if they get half of the success, why they've got a pretty good pitch going for it. Get into in the first warning to this game and perhaps the sign of their hitting like they hit the ball pretty well last night and couldn't find the open spot. Nolan Ryan now will stand in. He was caught looking his first time at bat. He takes a curve ball a little high for ball one.

1:18:58The next pitch is inside. Nolan getting out of the way of that pitch, down around his knees to count to a no. Condect the lead off hitter, Bill Grewarkowitz. Ryan swings it a fast ball and misses strike one. The count now, two balls in a strike. John winds a two one pitch, ground ball tapped up the third base side, foul, solid Parker. Goes over, he'll just flip it back out to John and the count evened up a two and two. Ryan was one for two. This spring, they won for three at this time at bat. The second time Ryan has been caught looking at every tie as the angels in the fourth. 1:31:20But he's caught the ball and seems surprised that the runner was trying to advance and in that hesitation period lost the chance to get the out. It has ruled a double all the way, Crawford racing over and in left his feet and as he got his glove on the ball he landed on the turf and it rolled away from his grasp and Grobachowicz with a plan in front of him on the gamble made it to second base to double. Here's Bobby Valentine. A walk in a single, he bunts off home plate foul, Yeager gloves it about 10 feet behind the plate. Grobachowicz is at the ball hard twice, opens this fifth inning with a double, the angels leading to the one. That's five hits for the angels, the Dodgers have only one alooping single to right by the pitcher Tommy John, Othnall and Ryan. Rabby leads from second, John checks him and the pitch, tap foul at the plate by Valentine. Two strikes to count. Veda Pinson on deck, Pinson has made an outstanding defensive play.

1:32:22The Rob Billy Buckner of extra bases, fending straight back to straight away centerfield and reaching high over his head to glove a drive off Buckner's bat in the first inning. On that plate loath scored the only dodge to run. John sets the head on the count. Two strikes, looks back at second and the pitch. Her ball hangs high in a way. McMullen Russell loaths and Buckingwell try to cut off the run at the plate. The pitch. Swung on a ground ball foul pass Buckner and of course with that infield drawn in. If you hit the ball hard at all, got a good chance for a base hit unless it seems right at. One of the opposing infielders. The outfield plays Pinson straight away in medium depth. Two to one angels. Angels trying to add to that lead. Big story today is it's been an airless game. Some fine defensive play. Rabbyquat's leads. Here's the pitch. Swung on and foul back caught a thought of play. The John jumps in front of Pinson to strike. And that gets Doug Howard. Rabbyquat's at third base now with three hits in the series.

1:34:26Couple of walks. The pitch outside the third base. Take it. Rabbyquat's picked off third base on a snap throw by Catcher Steve Yeager. They had Rabbyquat too far off the bag and a perfect throw by Yeager. And McMullen had the ball waiting for the head first line of Rabbyquat. So the angels lose this going to answer again. Careball inside two and two. Well that Yeager shot the ball down to McMullen. I don't know if that was a play that they'd worked out but McMullen playing in got over to the bag. Perfect timing. Outside three and two now to Pinson. One by John is three two delivery. Swung on bounce to the right side. There's Buckner to underhand the ball on to John and time for the out of the angels are denied in the fifth inning. No runs, a hit, no one left and a half way marking this one. Four and a half innings in the book. If the angel's two, the Dodgers won.

Ryan retires the dodges and orders the fourth inning the first time that he had mowed them down.

We are going to give our pitching vote to Nolan Ryan on the strength of his performance today. Stanton swings and misses strike one. They are going to vote for Dol Russell as the outstanding player, although it is just very tough to pick out one person that was a standout in this three game series. Dick just watching all the excitement in the three game series between the Dodgers and the Angels. You got to think that really it would be great if realignment ever came along. It would really add I think a lot to the game. You bet, fastball away three and two. Now the fan to the one shoot would benefit so very much. Now you can just feel there's a lot of, you can just see a lot of little wagers going here at Dodger fan against an angel fan. And I'll go back to work and argue about it the rest of the year. Outside corner says Salaco to stand. Alamar on its way to first place is called back by Salaco to strike call. So Rao gets stand and Alamar looking on strikes.

2:31:54And here's John Stephenson. He's walked line into a double play and drowned it out. And the fan would be true to San Francisco against Oakland. The Tusha Kago team. Oh my. The pitch. Fly ball into right field very high. Out goes the Sandefein Loaf. He wants it. He's got it. And Doug Rao worked a very easy ninth inning. One, two, three, the Angels go and out of the bottom of the line. And Buckner Davis and Crawford with the Angels leading to the one. One thing we've learned over the years at Standard Oil is to not put any heart and fast on that word service because we keep finding more and more things that it covers.

All in Ryan is going to attempt to become the first angel pitcher this spring to go the 9-0 distance. He's out there warming up with Cantor John Stephenson behind him, Dr. Barcois, Valentine, Alamar, and Spencer in the uphill Howard and Leavs, Vincent and Cetter and Lee Roy standing in right field. The two hits by the Dodgers. A single by Tommy John punched to right field in the third and a line single from Dull Russell to right field in the seventh inning. Ryan has struck out seven.

2:33:56He has walked four but has not walked anyone since back in the third inning. The only run given up without the aid of a lead off walk to Loafs. He's around out the Joshua wild picks and then Buckner's long sacrifice fly back in the first inning. And here's Billy Buckner just trying it off. He's over one today. He's sacrifice fly, a walk and a fly ball to left. So Ryan will have to get out the Dodgers best left handed hitters to win it for the angel. He's in the motion of the pitch. Right. 2:36:08So Buckner flies out to straightaway center field, one out and here's the inner fielder Willie Davis. Davis had his pen game hitting straight, snap last night when he went over five and he's over three today. So he's good, homeward on Friday night. Willie Crawford, who homeward last evening, non-deck. Ryan into motion, kicks and fires, hung on and foul back. Jim Spencer guarding the line at first face, trying to take away the extravacit and that opens up late. Area between Spencer and second baseman, Sandy Alamars, Stanton very deep in right field. Davis backs out. Ryan pitching from the shadows, they've turned the lights on now, a dodged stadium. As the infield area now pretty dark. And Willie Davis is going to make sure that that wind stopped blowing before he steps in there. Well, it's a gust of wind, it's taking a lot of that fresh red brick with it into the stands in the third day side.

2:37:13Davis got to really be hard for those batters up there now. The shadows have gone just past the pitcher's bound but still, they're trying to pick that ball up against the bright sun and center field has got to be tough. The pitch low, one and one. That has to be a pitcher's advantage for sure. Guess anyone who has involved in photography knows that that whole problem is trying to take a picture of someone in the shadows with a right background. And that's what the hitter is trying to do, focusing on that little white pill. Ryan's pitch, as long as I'm grounded to the right side, Alamars out there, skilks it and gets it over to Spencer for the out. And that's just down there final out here in the home half of the ninth inning and Willie Crawford's trying to the plate. Crawford, walk, calm it up and ground it out. Ryan went on away from pitching the angels to a three-way series title in 73. The angels then would keep the mayor's trophies as there was no series last year because of the baseball strike.

2:38:18The angels wanted two out of three in 1971. It's by Ryan, high with a fastball. Ryan certainly has not lost his velocity, he's finished strong, trying to close his own deal. And a motion he kicks and delivers. High again, 2-0, both pitches over the plate but above the shoulders of Willie Crawford. Ken McMullen would be next. And I had a feeling he'd rather pitch to McMullen than Willie Crawford.

Well, that's probably one of the things right there, Jim Spencer was telling Nolan Ryan at the mound to keep an eye on Crawford over here because they'll try and get that runner-in scoring position but Nolan's got everything going for him, a right handed hitter, right handed pitcher, win going in from well. I was with the meds. I pitched here ever series we came in, and for some reason I had some good games here, but I never could seem to win. And there was another one of those kind of games today where it was low-scoring, and we really had to battle for what we got. At times it looked like I was really going to have a bad game. The first four or five innings I really struggled with. I struggled with my rhythm. My arm was somewhat stiff now, but I just couldn't seem to get it going. Did you have any thoughts at all at the start of the game that you would like to go 90-thinks of possible?

2:51:58Well, I indicated earlier in a week that if I felt good and I didn't throw too many pitches, I'd like to go ahead and try to get 90-thinks under my belt and never have done it in spring training. I know that from past experience when I do go 90-thinks on my first game in the season, I seem to have an awful lot of stiffness and it takes me a lot of recovery from it, so I felt like if I could go ahead and get one in with the five days off on my hand for the opener that I felt like I could work a little harder this week and get ready for the opening day. So let's get that straight then. This is the first time you've ever won a Dodger stadium, and this is the first time you've ever gone 90-thinks before the start of the season. Right. And the final question regarding Freddie Frederico's appearance at the mountain in the ninth inning, what was that about? Well, I had a blister come up on my middle finger on my right hand, and he came out with a needle and we went ahead and punctured it and drained it so I could go ahead and finish the game. Nolan, looking at you this afternoon, and it looked as though you mentioned you were struggling in the first four or five innings. It looked as though you were having a little trouble with your breaking pitch.

2:52:58I was a Don for some reason, I was either over trying to overthrow it, or my rhythm was off where I was having trouble with my stride. I don't know exactly what it was, I was fighting myself and awful lot during the first four innings, and mainly with my curveball, it was hanging on, and I was trying to put a little action on a fastball and doing so. I was having trouble getting it over. Now that you have four days off right now between the opener, and you mentioned you do get a little stiff in the spring going along distances, what will be your plans now to do the rest of the week in Palm Springs? Well, Tuesday, I probably throw batting practice and doing a lot of extra running these first couple of days to try to work the stiffness out early, so that my arm will bounce back. I think it seems like it's still going to be a little stiff Tuesday, and I'll probably come back and throw again Wednesday. Do you have any kind of preparation done to your arm now after you've pitched what is your routine? Well, as far as after the game, I'll just have it melt down and have you put alcohol on.

2:54:03I really don't ice it down or any of these type of things, and I just wait till the next day and start my program all over again. You mean what you're trying to say is you still have youth on your side? Well, if that's what it is, then yes, that's what my procedure. I know that you see a fair and osky on the table and getting his arm stretched, and so far I've been fortunate not having to have ready to do that, but I'm sure someday I will. Nolan, Don, Driesdale and many of the Dodgers were commenting before the game, they have never seen it so windy at Dodger Stadium as today. How much of a factor was that in your pitching performance? You know it affected any ball hit in the air, but in terms of your pitching, what's that effect? Well, naturally it just makes it tough all over the pitching, and I think that the hitters were more to the disadvantage, and I know when I had my self, I had trouble seeing the dust blowing up around home plate. I think also it may have the tendency to make the curveball ride a little more,

2:55:06it didn't have a good break on it. I don't know if it affected a fastball in here or not, if anything, it might have made it road a little. Now Nolan, congratulations, a great night ending performance.
