We will take a look at what happened in the financial markets. And if you've missed the market's news, the market has turned on a dime within the last couple of hours. We'll give you the details on that. We will reset our question of the day. Chef Paul Smith is here. And when Paul comes by every Monday at the top of the four o'clock hour, we talk about food, food prep, the restaurant business, the restaurant business in the state of West Virginia. And we're not overlooking the fact that over the weekend, Max Crosby went from the Raiders to the Ravens for two first round picks. Many of the best or the highest rated free agents

4:15in this class in the NFL have already come off the board. So we'll talk about that with Carl Lee when he gets here at five o'clock. We'll play in or out as well. Also in that five o'clock hour, we will run down the schedule for tomorrow as the West Virginia high school girls basketball tournament gets ready to a tip off here in Charleston. We'll do that. That'll be in the five o'clock hour and then more of your responses to our question and day and more. All right, let's go ahead and start with what happened in the financial markets today. Okay. So the markets, the futures were down about eight hundred nine hundred points and we were down most of the day. But the president has made some comments to CBS where I'm just paraphrasing here that he says the war in a in a ran is very complete. All right. So that got the market to turn on a dime and we actually ended up on the day. The Dow was up one half a one percent came all the way back. That's about a a thousand points swing today from the futures to where we closed at four o'clock. The market was up almost

5:15two hundred and forty points today closing at forty seven thousand seven forty S&P five hundred up eight tens of one percent gaining almost 56 points today sixty seven ninety five at the close NASDAQ was your big percentage winner today. Tech came roaring back up one point four percent gained three hundred and eight points twenty two thousand six and ninety five at the close amongst stocks. A local interest to West Virginia that were big percentage gainers or losers today caterpillar roaring back up three point six percent gaining twenty four dollars and twenty four cents seven oh five fourteen at the close today. CSX was up two point one percent added eighty five cents forty eighty at the close. Tech Google alphabet was up two point two percent tacked on six dollars and seventy one cents three oh five oh two at the close in the energy space. Oil was really just a rocket ship north when they closed the straight of Hormuz this weekend. Now we're still down on the day, but we've come way off the lows WTI on the 9x down five point one

6:22percent today losing four dollars and sixty five cents closing the session at eighty six twenty five this was they were it was over a hundred dollars for most of the day, but now it's turned turned on a dime. Natural gas down four point two percent losing thirteen cents three dollars and five cents per unit at the moment. That's just a snapshot. We continue to trade natural gas virtually twenty four hours a day. Also a Bitcoin today Bitcoin was up two point seven percent gained a little more than eighteen hundred points sixty nine thousand for coin at the at four o'clock Eastern time in New York. All right, here's our question of the day. Question of the day and it has to do with restaurants. When did you get a food question out there? A restaurant question out with chef Paul coming on the show today. So I thought this was pretty interesting. Fifteen percent of restaurants could potentially close in twenty twenty six. Overall eighty five to ninety percent of the restaurant industry remains resilient with only ten percent to fifteen percent of the operators at risk.

7:27A handful of chains, Wendy's, Papa John's, Jack in the box, Pizza Hut have already announced plans to close hundreds of underperforming restaurants. Casual chains, Red Robin, Denny's have closed locations in the last year. Red Robin said they could close up the seventy restaurants over the next five years. 8:29eating at a restaurant for my 15 year anniversary. Wow. That blast drove back and now we're back to it. I would say that my restaurants would hurt me the most. I'm sure that's true. I'm sure that's true. Hey, man, you know what, you're making it tough on the rest of our husbands. I mean, you're taking your wife, birthday trips, you're going to Raleigh for your anniversary, back it off a little bud. I mean, you're putting the pressure on the rest of it. I get it all out in like basically 30 days though. So the rest of the year, I'm pretty much in the restaurant for 13 to 15 hours a day. Fair enough. Fair enough. Hey, we got a lot of listener questions. I don't want to get to those in just a minute. But one thing I saw and essentially the link on this was a story about mistakes that customers make when they go to a steakhouse. And it got me thinking that maybe it's time to revisit from you some of the questions that a customer should ask the owner when they come to a restaurant

9:30for the very first time. And I'll start with the steaks. Do you think there's a tendency when we go to a steakhouse to always order rare when we really don't want rare? Yeah, I think so. I think too. You have to be careful because of true steakhouse. You know, it's going to be like almost a pool center if you order rare, right? And so you're going to, you're going to go, you know, if you normally eat medium, you know, the medium is going to be a little less probably in more of your normal restaurant mid-rare. So I think steakhouses tend to go a little bit like a half of a more rare than you order it. So I would probably order mid-rare, right? Or medium if you want a mid-rare. You know, also when you go to a new restaurant, sometimes it can be a little intimidating. You don't know really what the setup is.

10:31But you should, if you want, you really should be asking questions at that point as opposed to maybe when the meal is over in. And that helps the restaurant, too. Yeah, I always, too, would suggest look up the restaurant before you go. You know, look at the menu and depending on what it is, if it's a classic steakhouse, it's probably not going to change very much, right? So you're going to get the same thing that may have a feature of the night, but you know, if it's a seasonal restaurant or something that might be a little bit more local, you can at least look at it and get a little bit of a feel of what you're getting into and then come in with some pointed questions versus like, hey, tell me about it. I think one of the things that always is, it sounds really wonderful for, you know, and maybe the diner would think that it's, you know, great, but like, let the chef do whatever they want. Like, you got to, you got to lead them to the water a little bit. Right. You know, I would love to have, you know, something with this or something with that or look at the menu and see, hey, I would much rather the somebody order off the menu than something

11:37a little different. And with those same lines, if you, the chef has thought about the flavor profiles, the textures, all those things together in a dish and composed it, how it should be. So if you, you know, substitute things and then don't like it, well, that's your own fault. All right. One more question about this and then we'll get into listener questions because we've got a bunch. When you go to a new restaurant, if your server does not offer the specials, should you as a customer ask if there are any? You know, that might, I would say if there are features, then that should be something that is in the server's book. Okay. They should have talked about it in pre shift. That should come out. You know, if they're, if they don't have, they don't, if they don't offer it up, maybe there isn't any. All right. Here we go. Let's get into a couple of listener questions. And this one, you know, we've talked about a fruit prep at home,

12:39but I don't think we've ever had this question. We have a question about barley. We have a question about barley 304685. Chef Paul, what is your favorite way to make barley? Honestly, I don't make barley very often. You know, we use something similar. We use pharaoh a lot in our in our cuisine. So, you know, I tend to, I think, make it into kind of a similar to a risotto. Okay. So, you know, cook it down, you know, boil it, make it to worth kind of al dente, and then finish it with a little butter, a little cream, maybe a little bit of white wine, something like that, or, you know, cook it to al dente, and then make, you know, make a vented red, something like that, cool it down, and make it into a nice fresh salad. So, you know, these seasonal ingredients that are that are blanched and tossed together, almost like

13:39using it instead of pasta for a pasta salad. Just to follow up, I've done it in a rice cooker. What do you think of that, Beth? Yeah. No, rice cooker is absolutely great because you don't really have to watch it. You could do it in the oven, which is basically kind of the same way, almost like a peel off style. Gotcha. Gotcha. Hey, you know what, we've talked about your new location for bad happy burrito out there in Putnam County. We've gotten a couple of questions about that, about that in the past. But here's why I thought that was interesting. 304941. Dave, please ask Paul about whether bad happy burrito is going to use door dash or grub hub. And I thought that was a good question. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's a great question. Right now, you can order to go. We, you know, I like to control everything and crawl then, walk slowly, then, then speed walk, then jog, then run. So right now, we are taking care of the guests that are in house. Okay. Right now, we're not doing a lot of, a lot of anything other than that. You can

14:41definitely call in to get it to go order literally the first two weeks we were open. I don't even think we answered the phone because we were so busy in house that it got a little insane. And we don't want to overwhelm our kitchen. We also don't want you to have a bad experience when you come in. So it is a process. So, you know, when a restaurant opens, you know, if they are doing it the right way, they're trying to crawl, walk, run. So the short answer is, yes, we will be doing that. All right. One more holdover question. Then we'll get to the new ones from today. I thought this was pretty specific. I want to know what you're taking is 30441. Hey, Dave, please ask Paul. If he's had book week, uh, Donut holes with maple bourbon dipping sauce. I will say, no, I haven't had that. I've had a lot of book. I've had a lot of book. We pancakes. I've never had a book. We don't at all. But that sounds absolutely delicious. And if that person is offering 10 bridge rows, there you go. Uh, here's a question from Todd and Hedgesville.

15:44Hey, Paul, I'm making sweet potato corn beef hash for the first time. Have you ever made this? Any tips or suggestions? Uh, yeah. I mean, I, I think that sounds absolutely wonderful. I tend to kind of cut everything about the same size. Um, you know, we'll cook this. We potato's a little bit ahead, but not all the way. So then when you add all the other ingredients to it, everything isn't kind of mush. Uh, but all the flavors meld together. All right. Um, oh, you were just in Miami. You might be, you might have had some plantains while you're in South Florida 304 421. Dave, please ask Paul how we prepare, uh, prepares plantains. And in what dishes does he use them? So yeah, we have plantains at that happy burrito. So we take them, uh, blanch them, um, and then deep fry them and then smash them just a little bit to get them a little carnalized. And we do them with, uh, a little hot sauce and, uh, a roasted poblano crema.

16:50So also I love it with a little drizzle of like hot honey because, you know, make them a little bit sweet and then a little heat. That's my favorite. All right. And this is a nice general question, but maybe I don't, I don't think I've ever asked you this before. So we got it from a listener 304 685. Paul, what is your favorite dish if you could only pick one? Oh gosh. You know, I get that question all the time. My favorite dish to eat. Um, I know it sounds kind of crazy, but I am a big fan of just a grilled cheese. A grilled cheese that is done perfectly. That is, you know, nice amount of butter on both sides of the bun. A couple of different kinds of cheese in it. Definitely has to have some white American for, for my pedestrian bite. And then, you know, maybe a little bit of brie, uh, a little bit of gouda. Um, and then just really nice and

17:56toasty. Get that cheese pull. Oh my gosh. There's really nothing better than that. And then if you go the opposite direction that I love, uh, seared floggera, uh, or caviar. Yeah. So I can go, I can go with high end or as low end, uh, as we go, but, you know, I, I, everyone wants to know what chefs eat. Like I had an uncrustable for lunch. And I literally just had a grilled cheese for dinner. Well, man, those are two things that couldn't be more opposite in the spectrum. That's fantastic. Oh, man. Hey, somebody asked me this, uh, maybe you told me what I forgot. What's the status of your cooking classes at the, uh, at the Capitol market? When are they coming back? Yeah, they're going to come back in May. Uh, we're really excited about it. And, um, I cannot wait, you know, AARP is the best partner we've been doing it now for about 10 years. The House of Delegates has given unanimous approval today to a bill that increases prison time for some crimes in West Virginia, including extending the time of a murder with mercy conviction. House Minority Leader Sean Hanbuckle expressed concern about the cost of stiffer sentences during today's discussion in the House. Proceed with caution. This is a very, very costly bill. Years 24 to 25, we expanded our prison cost by over 75 million. And it keeps rising. The bill now goes back to the Senate after the House

26:19changed the original Senate bill. It's tournament time in the capital city. The WVSSAC High School Basketball Championships arrive at Charleston, Coliseum and Convention Center on Tuesday. And over the next two weeks, thousands of fans from around the state will descend on the capital city's hotels and restaurants. Charleston, CBV President and CEO Tim Brady says the tournaments highlight a busy month of March that provides local businesses with a new audience to entertain. All of those people are staying in hotels. All of those people are eating in restaurants and there's your economic impact. The WVSSAC High School Basketball Championships begin at 9.30 on Tuesday morning and every game of both tournaments can be heard on the Metro News Radio Network and online at wvmetrenews.com. 29:26of free agency. Now a lot of these deals, you know, they have rules against tampering but what are rules and what are rules. So we'll talk about some of the biggest deals today in the NFL as far as free agency goes when Carl gets here. That'll be in about a half an hour. Kristen Bird's got the Hollywood dirt today and I'd tell you what, we got some pretty interesting stories. Let's go out to Hollywood and talk to Kristen. How you doing today? Doing great. All right. Let's let's start with hoppers. Okay. Let's let's start there. In fact, we did a segment last week where the the rumors of Pixar's demise have been really exaggerated. It's been a while since they've had an original hit, but it looks like they've got one in hoppers. They do. And you know, this isn't the extraordinary like over $100 million box office, but this is this is good news for Pixar. It got a haul in the US of 46 million and 88 million globally. So that was the biggest launch for an original animated film since the studio's

30:27cocoa was released in 2017. So yeah, pretty good. And Pixar has has done well with some of the franchises that they've launched where they've had sequels. I mean, inside out two was a monster toy story for, but it and it been a while since an original animated film from Pixar like Hoppers had had done pretty well. And this wasn't exactly a super easy weekend to launch. I mean, it was up against a scream seven, which really didn't do all that much business. And it looks like Maggie Gyllenhaal's movie The Bride is kind of dead on arrival. So this was a this was a good week for Pixar. Yeah, it was definitely a win for Pixar. And remember, we do have toy story five coming out later this year. And that's going to be a monster hit. We all know that it kind of goes back to its roots. So I think Pixar overall is going to have a really good 2026. Hey, you know, talking about movies, we didn't get a chance to talk about this couple of weeks ago, but I did want to ask you about weathering heights. The critics have hated this movie, but people are going

31:30to it in droves. This thing's made its money back, right? I mean, it's already grossed almost it's made over $75 million. Is it the story? Is it the stars? What do you think it was about weathering heights that got people into the theater to see this thing when the critics really didn't like it? It's Jacob. I mean, let's be honest. I mean, they launched on a good weekend. It was you know, February 14. So it was made for a good Valentine's Day movie. But Jacob, a Lordy is a hot young actor. He played Heathcliff, of course, paired with Margot Robbie, who's had great box office success over the last few years. Of course, we all remember the summer of Barbie. And I think the two of them together just made it critic proof. I think that's that's the good news. Yeah. It's just really unique to see a movie like this get into the theaters that's kind of savaged by the critics. And the public just didn't care. They just went out to see it anyway. That's kind of a unique situation. It is. And I think, but it's also showing that it's an underserved market because all we're doing are constant sequels to, you know, things like superhero movies.

32:36And, you know, animated movies and people are looking for something fresh. Now, you know, Weathering Heights is a book and there's been plenty of movies. But to this audience, it feels fresh as a romantic movie. All right. So next week's the Oscars. You know, surprises. What do you think? What kind of a week is this going to be leading up to the ceremony and Sunday night? Yeah. I think that there are going to be a lot of surprises. If you would ask me last month, who was going to win, it was going to be one battle after another with Paul Thomas Anderson, also getting best director. And also, this has been kind of a crazy twist of events. Timothy Chalamet from already Supreme and best actor. And the tide is starting to shift. And the momentum looks like sinners is going to win for best picture. Brian Kugler might win for best director. And Michael B. Jordan might win for best actor. So, you know, the ratings for these award shows have been trending up. They've been trending up. But it is kind of, it's kind of a touchy

33:36situation where we've got such a big worldwide event like the Oscars going on when you've got the war in Iran and you've got the situation in Ukraine. Do you think there's going to be a lot of shout outs to what's going on in the real world as opposed to what's going on in the movie world next week. And is that going to be, is that going to be noted? I think it should. And hopefully, and this happened during, you know, the war and when the war of Afghanistan broke out, you know, the celebrities kind of toned down their wardrobe and their fashions, you know, they weren't wearing the million dollar necklace. They kind of just kept with muted tones, like blacks and maybe blues and things like that for their fashions. And I think we'll probably see something similar going on this year. And that's also up to Conan O'Brien to set the tone as the host. He has been workshopping his material around town. And I bet that they've had to make a pivot in the last couple of weeks. How many, how many, it's interesting that Conan is going to be hosting the, the Oscars next weekend in light of his relationship with with Rob Reiner. And I know that they're going,

34:40there's going to be something special for Rob Reiner, right? Maybe more than one thing. I would, yeah, I would assume that they're going to be maybe possibly a segment about him then maybe leading into the in memoriam. And you know, it is very hard because Conan is aligned with that last night that Rob Reiner was alive because he was the one throwing the Christmas party where everyone saw them. But he may not be able to say too much just because there is a criminal case ongoing. So he can probably only talk about his friend. He can't talk about anything beyond that. Let's talk a little bit about Drew Barrymore. So the story today about Drew Barrymore is getting two more years with her daytime show. I mean, we've talked about this before daytime man, it is fraught with danger. Very few of these shows really survive. And it wasn't really that long to go that it was kind of up in the air as to whether or not Drew Barrymore show was going to continue whether it was going to get the ratings. They're coming off a really good year. And now that the field has kind of thinned, she kind of rules it, doesn't she? She certainly does. It's

35:43been kind of amazing, you know, with the exit of Kelly Clarkson. And then we know that we know that the Sherry show got canceled. We have two is still in existence. So you have Jennifer Hudson who got renewed for one year for the 2627. So she's got another year on her calendar. But Drew got two more years. So she is going to run at least their season eight and 2028. So that's a lot of confidence in Drew Barrymore and what she's achieving in daytime. I'm looking at this story about this in the Hollywood Reporter. And I had no idea she had so many daily viewers. I mean, the Drew Barrymore show gets like 1.6 million a day. That's a little bigger than I think a lot of people realize. Oh, I completely agree. Now her clips from her show show up a lot on my social media feed. So I do see a lot of the clips. And they always seem to do very well. And she has Valerie Bertinelli there with her. Like she's added contributors along the way, which I think is very interesting.

36:43So it's not just the Drew Barrymore show. She kind of likes to share the spotlight. Would you have believed when she started that she would be still going? I mean, it was kind of a surprise that she even did a talk show. Yeah. And there seemed to be some pushback for a while because you know, she's a very close talker and gets in people's spaces. The Martha Stewart was like, okay, you're little too close. So I, you know, I wondered if there was going to be a bigger resistance to Drew Barrymore. But I think that she feels very relatable and very fresh in that space. Kind of the way Kelly Clarkson also felt very fresh in that space. So I will be curious to see if she does even decide to go beyond 2028. And for that success continues. All right. Let's wrap this up by talking about the Brady Bunch House. So, okay. Now the Brady Bunch House has gone through a lot of publicity over the decades. In fact, I didn't HDTV do a renovation of the Brady House. What is the story with what's

37:44the latest with what is going on with the Brady House where they had the TV show from the ABC series decades ago? Yeah. So there was only the exterior that they used for this original TV series. HDTV purchased the house in 2018. It's in studio city. They purchased it for $3.5 million. They used it on the series a very Brady renovation. The cast members came back to help renovate. So now the interior also now looks like the exterior. And it was bought in September 2023 for $3.2 million. So someone got a bargain there saved a little money. But it was bought by the wife of the former HBO CEO. And she is now like made sure that all the decorations stay the same. They rented out for events. They have hired some of the Brady cast to come in for some of the charity events. And it has now been designated a Los Angeles landmark. So it's in the same league as Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Bowl, which is amazing. So what does that mean exactly

38:46that they can't tear it down? Or if you wanted to buy it, you had to jump jump through additional hoops. I'm not sure I can understand exactly what that means that it's a protected landmark. It's a protected landmark meaning that there can be no changes made to the outside. Now of course you can upgrade it. You can renovate it if you need to do something structurally for let's say earthquake retrograde type of situation. You can do that. But you have to keep it original to the exterior in terms of the architecture of how it was protected here in 2026. Hey, Coup, jump in here on this. I got a question for you. I mean back back in the innocent days when we were watching the Brady bunch, what percentage of viewers really thought that that's where they lived that that that the show wasn't actually done on on a set that the house that you saw was the where they actually filmed it. I would have to think that I don't know what age I was when I learned about set filming or whatever. I just taught my daughter about it last week as a matter of fact, that was shown are some different things that we were watching and explaining to her. This is an

39:47interior shot, although it looks like it's outside and they used to make more movies like this. But it was a family show and I would imagine most of the kids probably didn't understand that there was like a sound stage that they did most of that stuff. I mean, I definitely didn't when I was like nine or whatever, you know. So there's probably a good amount of people that thought, hey, that's just the house, right? I mean, when you see the home alone movie, I mean, you see the outside of the house, you just assume the inside is what they show, right? Yes, exactly. It's not the same house. Exactly. So Kristen, if you and I got in a car and we drove over to 1122 Dilling Street in studio city and we saw that house, would we think, wow, it's big for the neighborhood or it's really small or what's it like next to the other houses in the neighborhood? What would our feeling be, do you think? Well, I'm going to tell you that that neighborhood is adorable and it's a lot of mid-century modern ranch houses. So you would actually think, oh, that fits right into the neighborhood. You can stand on the sidewalk. You can take your photos in front of it. I've done that myself and it is kind of a cool little part of TV history. So I'm glad that it got the

40:49Los Angeles landmark designation because we love to knock down historic buildings here in LA. We do not preserve them. So I'm glad this one got it. Gosh, would you like to live next to that house? No, I'm done. No, because there's constant traffic over there of people taking photos, but it's cool just as a tourist or even as a so-called local.
