Presented by Salango Law Metronoos Hotline is a three-hour audio tour Navigating the world of sports news, entertainment, tech and more From a mountain-state point of view Hotline is a no-politics zone You can join the conversation Text the show at 304-825-5304 304-talk-304 Here's the host for Metronoos Hotline, Dave Weekly All right, welcome back to the show Our number two, how do you do? Metronoos Hotline Keeping you company in the afternoon here in West Virginia Right up until six o'clock. Thanks for tuning in Some busy day or on the program Hey wherever you're listening to the show today Inside the state of West Virginia or beyond the borders Just trying to get a read on what's going on back home We hope you're having a good day We hope you're having a good one It's a little rainy According to coop two chilly to take a walk Here in Charleston 56 degrees At the moment we've got a lot of stuff to get into in this particular hour

We'll take a look as we always do at the top of the four o'clock hour What happened in the financial markets today? We'll reset our question of the day Dave Bryant's dealer depot We'll be here, you know the Stealer season may be over but Man the news never stops The stealers city of Pittsburgh will be hosting the NFL drafted about 50 days or so The franchise tag deadline has come and gone officially at four o'clock It looks like Trey Hendrickson was not tagged by the Bengals So he's a free agent Uh, that's an interesting situation Players of note who were franchise tag right at the deadline by their teams Included Daniel Jones by the Indianapolis Colts Breeze Hall by the Jets also got a franchise tag We'll run down some of that as we move along this afternoon Also, uh, we'll get into the entertainment report at 425 ish Oh, Matihana College basketball insider is going to join us in less than a half an hour Talking about WVU's basketball game last regular season road game of the year for WVU on the road at K state

um Tonight's game would probably be more devastating as a loss for West Virginia K state Not really good It would hurt WVU's chances to get in the conversation For an at large birth to the NCAA tournament They're floating on the outside with about a half a dozen other teams trying to get into the into the conversation But a lost tonight against a case day would probably be pretty devastating WVU does have another opportunity to get a quad one win this weekend when they host UCF on uh senior day can you have senior day in this uh era? I guess Got this sort of You know Can you still have senior day? I Think you can yeah, you can have We can talk about this. Yeah, you can have senior day. I guess you just may not recognize any of the people there The those were the people there that stayed for the education Ha Education that's funny. Right. I know. That's funny Five o'clock hour Anthony Lewis is going to be on the phone today on the phone today

And at 533 rich Rodriguez had some Comments that he made to the media about the opening of spring practice Marshall spring drill started today WV spring practice begins on Saturday rich run at a press avail So we'll hear primarily the uh the Q&A he had with the assembled media today About the quarterback battle. Oh man, we love talking about quarterbacks. So we will do that. That'll be at 533 today All right, let's go ahead and take a peek at what happened in the financial markets today This was an interesting day in the markets The Dow was down 810 so 1% lost 403 points Closed at 48,501 but the real story here is that the market came back about 800 points At one point today the Dow was down over 1200 points But it only finished down 400 points the S&P was down 1% today plus 65 points The S&P closing at 68 16 NASDAQ was down 1% today losing 232 points

22,000 516 at the close and one of the bigger stories today Is about energy where oil today at one point was up about 8% Well the president came out and made the comment that now the Navy is going to Offers assistance for golf shipping and escort tankers through the Straits of Hormuz Now when he made that announcement Suddenly oil prices started slipping down a bit slipping down a bit But as we mentioned in the the 3 o'clock hour Today was the biggest one-day spike in gasoline prices in four years In fact, let's do the oil prices first today before we get into the stock market Oil today up 3.6% gain two dollars and 54 cents WTI in the 9x closed at 73 dollars and 77 cents natural gas today was up 3.1% Tacked on nine cents three dollars and five cents per unit

Here's the thing though and I mentioned this yesterday This is just a snapshot because natural gas prices are essentially traded 23 out of the 24 hours a day So at the moment Natural gas is up almost a dime 305 per unit now Let's take a look at some of the stocks that are related to West Virginia that were big percentage gainers or losers today Caterpillar down 3.8% lost 28 dollars and 35 cents 7 23 97 at the close today to pot Likewise was down 2.6% lost to buck 30 48 35 at the close FMC down 3.2% 46 Sense to the red 1394 at the close today not a lot of not a lot of positives although there was a little bit of a flight To value and to dividend plays AT&T for example was up 2.4% today gained 67 cents 28 dollars and 68 cents and what about Bitcoin now Bitcoin looks like it's trying to Create a range here

Somewhere between 65 and 70 dollars per coin today was down 1.7% losing almost 1200 dollars a coin going at 68,000 dollars and change all right Here is our question of the day question of the day And it's far quite a bit of conversation in the 3 o'clock hour and I'd like to know what you think about this So Burger King is piloting a project now. It's an AI chatbot called patty That is in an employees headset to monitor customer service interactions and assist with operations the open AI powered system listens to what you say and it's listening for phrases like Welcome to Burger King Please and thank you to evaluate worker friendliness the AI assistant helps employees with meal prep Equipment guidance and inventory management through the bk assistant platform So the question the day is this and it's sponsored by a small angle law

Is AI impacting your job right now and secondarily how important is customer service to you is AI impacting your job right now And how important is customer service to you to respond text those in three oh four talk three oh four three oh four eight two five five three oh four Tweep me. I'm on exit weekly w e e k le y one word three ease w e e k le y and we're starting to get some pretty interesting takes on this We got into some of the responses on x in the in the first hour and we're starting to load up on some of these other responses to Uh, let's see did you get this collar marinas that just what's the deal on collar marina from the Arizona Cardinals released release release well that okay, that's another interesting situation because his name's kind of been linked to the Steelers as well. Yeah, there you go. Okay, but I mean, man, that's a big cap hit That's a big cap hit for Arizona, but look how worked out for Denver. Yeah, you know Denver

Just bit the bullet on the Russell Wilson situation got bonix and they had their car back up and running and back into the playoffs So I'm sure Arizona's thinking about the same thing, but they Arizona to be honest has been a grease fire for a while. Oh, yes So what's what's going on with Kyler Murray? That'll be the next thing and you know who we should ask I'm a Dave brine. He probably has a few thoughts on this. So let's talk some stealer football All right Dave brine joins me now talk a little stealer football None of the franchise tag has come and gone Dave. How you doing? All right happy Tuesday. We're getting closer and closer to the star of the new league gear We're starting to see the the annual kind of Flooding of the market with some of these cut served that are being announced most of these will take place right after the star of the new league gear and uh, yeah I just overheard you talking about Kyler Murray there a lot of people thought that was going to happen It is indeed going to happen after the started in the new league here. They're going to release him

They obviously owe him. I think close to like 37 million dollars in 2026 so and and I think you kind of hit on it there You could kind of see a repeat of what the steel you know what happened with Russell Wiltson He he ultimately signed for the minimum, you know With the the Steelers is a couple of years ago after the Broncos farted ways with him and I would expect whatever team Kyler Murray lands with It would be for the minimum as well because of Kyler Murray being due the rest of that money From the Cardinals and a lot of people already starting to speculate You know might the Steelers be interested in a guy like Kyler Murray Former first round draft pick obviously things haven't go up gone Well for him overall in Arizona. There was a lot of reports I think over the last several years about his study habits and his Game prep and and you know a few leadership questions at times as well too

So obviously the Steelers I think at this point are waiting to hear what happens With with Aaron Rodgers will Aaron Rodgers want to play will he want to play for the Steelers another season But at the very least you know there's going to be options, you know Kyler Murray potentially being one of those To to to fall back on should Aaron Rodgers decide to either hang him up or go elsewhere Yeah, I wonder about the you know, I just did a quick search on this about the Kyler Murray of video game clause You know he required requiring four hours of weekly film study Which mandated no or reduced credit if he was distracted by video games What are you going to do um, but so if the Steelers are interested in Kyler Murray now they don't have to really They don't have to trade any capital right they don't have to send any picks no players He's you just have to sign the guy there There's a lot of interesting stuff about the combine and speaking of quarterbacks and what the Steelers may be up to no really

You know Let me ask you this you think Mike McCarthy had like a wink wink agreement with Aaron Rodgers About his future plans before he took the Steeler job Well, I'll tell you this Obviously Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy have a long relationship dating back to the time and with green Bayon I heard Mike McCarthy when he was introduced as the head coach saying that he has had conversations With Aaron now Aaron still likes to be Aaron. He likes to you know Do things in his own time Period and all like that. I would imagine at best Mike McCarthy got out of Aaron Rodgers And this is just me speculating that okay if I if I decide I want to play in 2026. Yeah, I'll play for the Steelers and and and give it one more go there because look everything you know His teammates evidently loved him The offense of line, you know, I I think overall, you know, he fit in really really well

There was no distractions or anything as far as that goes and I I think Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers would be able to pick up Kind of where they left off several years ago in green Bay there now I don't know if there's a wink wink. I'm gonna take this job. I want you to come in But you know there have been conversations and McCarthy I think is stating contact with him and I think right now they're just giving Aaron a little bit of time A little bit of space, but in the same breath, you know, the start of the new league here is almost a week away now And the Steelers are gonna at least want to have a good idea of what direction They need to go at quarterback Because you got guys like Connor Murray hitting the market. We'll see There's any other quarterbacks that are released here. What's gonna happen with Anthony Richardson? I know the cult say that they give it him a opportunity to to seek a trade. I don't see the Steelers trading For for Anthony Richardson over there because he's got I think he's do like a little over five million guaranteed

That's a little bit rich for a guy that might potentially sit in the bench for you But if if if if you know the cults can't find a trading partner and release them out right Obviously he would become a much cheaper option that maybe the Steelers would take a look at him if If Aaron Rodgers didn't come back. So I think right now Dave They're just in wait and see mode over the courses next. I don't know seven to ten days To see if Aaron says hey, yeah, I'm good to go. I'm gonna come back I'm gonna play for you and then obviously if they get the word that he's not going to come back Then they're gonna explore other options and look I'd be calling the San Francisco 49ers about Mac Jones and just just taking the temperature to see You know what it would take as far as trade compensation to maybe get Mac Jones out of you know for at least one year He's got a very cheap contract In 2026 now here's the thing the 49ers are in a good situation They got brought pretty as their starter. They got a really good backup in Mac Jones on a cheap contract

They don't have to trade him But if they got a you know and offered too good to refuse Maybe they part part ways with him So that that that potentially is something else maybe for the Steelers to look at well a lot of chatter about Malik Willis Also as a potential stealer quarterback in the future. Hey at the at your website stealer depot dot com a couple of stories And one of them I thought was interesting about the the rookies that the Steelers were talking to at the combine We must we'll make this whole segment about cubies you and I I guess this will be the third segment in a row where we talked about Ty Simpson and I think most people feel like he improved his draft stock in Indianapolis And I also talked to to Drew Aller whose draft stock has been falling After a kind of a poor year at Penn State and Carson back probably Shined up his resume a little bit with what he did at Miami this year Yeah, you know, it probably wasn't totally unexpected that the Steelers were released kind of meeting some of these top quarterbacks Specifically, maybe some of the ones that did not attend

The senior ball or the Shrine ball They obviously you had yet in us fire. I think was at the Shrine ball So they got to spend time with him there So I think they're just getting to know some of these guys and look Drew Aller has been right around the corner there at Penn State So probably catching up with him because you look you never know which way this is and you know They're gonna have to have some sort of a plan specifically of Aaron Rodgers doesn't Come back obviously you got will Howard under contract. You've got Mason Rudolph under contract But what if what if Aaron Rodgers decides he doesn't want to play in what if they don't want to go down the road Of a Kyler Murray or something along those lines, you know, is there at least a decent chance that they might address You know the position at the very least to give Some younger competition to a guy like You know will Howard on the roster there now. I kind of doubt that this team would go Into the season with two really essential rookie quarterbacks because will Howard didn't play a snap last year

But you know anything you've got to leave all your options have all the options on the table And that's why I think you you know, you you're hearing about them meeting with guys like you know Simpson and Drew Aller and Carson back at the combine so we'll know a little bit more Obviously a way ahead of the draft when we when we find out what's gonna happen with Aaron Rodgers But yeah, they did indeed talk to these quarterbacks in some formal meetings at the combine I gotta tell you whoever the quarterback is for the Steelers this year got about 60 seconds here But I didn't want to mention They're probably not crying any tears over the fact that Trey Hendrix and didn't get franchise tagged by the Bengals Absolutely Maybe he'll go to an NFC team, right Dave? I'd love it The very least let's not have him go to Baltimore or Cleveland Or any you know any other team, you know, maybe that the Steelers have on the schedule here That wasn't a surprise though They weren't going to be able to sign him long-term and they weren't going to franchise him back to back years

So out the door he goes. I don't know. It kind of feels like maybe he's gonna I don't know end up in Dallas or I don't know. We'll see where he lands, but he's good Trey Hendrixon's definitely gonna have a market as soon as that release becomes official Yeah, you're hearing the cowboys, but you're also hearing a little chatter about the Rams too Anno and Lou Anorumo was his coach with the Bengals and he's with the Colts now Moving from the Bengals to the Colts could be a potential move for Hendrixon as well Dave got to leave it there. Thanks for jumping on with us. We'll talk more Steelers football next week All right, we'll be in tampering period mode a week now So we'll talk a little bit about that. Thanks for having me on Dave. I'm working pemberton inside the 580 WCHS radio newsroom rain showers continuing in Charleston will have more on acu other after the news The bill that's gone the buzz for the last day or so at the state capital appears dead for this session There was a problem with the machine gun bill once it left the senate judiciary committee after the committee passed it last night Bill spawns serve moningalia county senator kris rose says it would take a special vote to revive the bill He says it's probably dead. I would say so unless the caucus comes back and changes um they're opinion on it I mean You'd have at this point you theoretically to get the bill out of senate in time you'd have to Spend constitutional rules which would take over two thirds of the senate to do so so I would say Traditionally speaking this bill would be dead at this time. I'm Joe Percato on 580 WCHS spring practice will soon open for the WV football team As Ritratory Giz begins the second season of the second ten year leaving the mountaineers Another almost complete roster overhaul has been done over the last three months Since the end of a disappointing four and eight seas I think in a ways you can correct some mistakes or get better In our hurry, but it takes money a lot of money and We have some we have more than we had a year ago But we don't have that kind of mess around money where you can make a whole bunch of mistakes

It doesn't matter because you're paying that guy just as much money you're going to be okay So it's a different dynamic check out more from Rodney Giz at wvmensionews.com Girls high school regional finals tonight in basketball on WCHS Jeff Jenkins will have the call of Winfield and Nitro at 7 p.m. With this update of sports on Joe Percato on 580 WCHS The voice of Charleston 580 WCHS All right, welcome back to the show 26 minutes till the hour You know you got conference tournaments Starting up this week that includes in the big 12 where later this week the the big 12 Women's basketball tournament will be tipping off and today the big 12 Announced its yearly award winners in women's basketball Olivia Miles is the player of the year from TCU WVU's Jordan Harrison was named as the defensive player of the year

Christopher Girlik from Texas Tech is the coach of the year Harrison so she's the defensive player of the year In the big 12 from WVU She is also the only member of the mountainous squad that made the first team Um on the all big 12 team that was announced today And kind of a little bit surprising that WVU didn't have any other players Mentioned on the second or third team but that's a congratulations to her That's breaking news Jordan Harrison of the mountaineers Is the defensive player the year in women's basketball in the big 12 And also a member of the big 12 first team that was announced this afternoon All right, and the tournament's coming up in Kansas City All right Speaking of basketball WVU's got a big game tonight at K state So bringing to the stage let's get Maddie Haunt or college basketball insider on the line To talk about it a little bit. How you doing today Matt what's going on Dave life is great. It's March and stakes are high baby. So uh we're ready. I hear you. I hear you So how do you see this one breaking down? A WVU is a two and a half point road favorite in the game tonight

K state uh they've already had a coaching change there They've lost three in a row. They've lost nine of their last ten Uh, how do you see the matchup? What do you think? Well, if you go off the first game it has the potential to be a rock fight Yeah, that was a low scoring game. It was 59 to 54 and Uh, WVU tough that one out And I think the biggest thing tonight Dave is as you know, coach Hodge has to find a way to get those guys To play loose and not feel the pressure because I know they all know and they all see Uh, that you know if they win a couple more games and one in the conference tournament They're right back in the thick of things for the NCAA tournament And so that's gonna be a Distraction that has to be eliminated. They have to focus on the task at hand And then find a way to get this one on the road Yeah, Jerome Tang was coach in K state when West Virginia and the wildcats met for the first time earlier this year in Morgan town And if you remember that game, I mean That probably was a game the K state should have won

They had the ball and a two possession lead At the under four media time out in the game and ended up blowing it Yeah, WVU that was one that they miraculously pulled out of there there at the bag there and uh He had some key stops in case they took some questionable shots there at the end and WVU found a way to win that one I think that tonight, you know, it but scares you a little bit about Kansas State, you know, Jerome Tang's not there anymore But Matt dress school he's a uh, you know, he's a coach with the experience. He was a head coach in North Florida He's been assistant at Baylor and assistant at Clemson. He's been doing it a long time And they have experienced guards bays, you know, PJ haggardy a lot of people don't realize that he's a third leading scorer in the country And he hasn't gotten much attention because they've had such a bad year But he's average in 23 points per game He's very squeaky and he's really excellent again to the free throw line So I think WVU really has to be aware of haggardy tonight and they have to keep a map of the foul line They came tough take tough contested shots

Yeah, these guys Case State can play some pretty good basketball. I mean their most recent win After Terran after Drum Tang's dismissal was against Baylor. They're they're coming off a loss at home to to TCU But that was a game where you know, it's a one possession game with five minutes to go It's just been a situation and this has been a prompt for case state all year long where they just they have just faded at the end And haven't been able to put wins in the barn You yeah, you kind of hope the wins out there sales a little bit You hope the crowds not what it not isn't normally a brand-witch cow. You know, you know They're 11 18 and 2 and 14 the league So you're hoping maybe they don't bring the energy in doozyaz and they're the winning team playing for The equal games in March will bring but you can't count on that So WVU's got to go on the on the road and they've got to be clean and their execution And they have to continue to improve upon like they did in BYU where they out rebound BYU that was the key in the game because in the previous losses They were getting crushed on the glass by Utah TCU and Oklahoma state

They corrected that that friend has to continue because defense and rebounding travel You know it it always helps to play at home a team is better at home and in case state has won the majority of their home games this year Despite the fact that they had to change coaches in the middle of the season in there in their last time out against TCU They shot 50% from the field But it was just turnovers that did them in I don't know the shoot sheet in front of me when I was looking at last night They had 18 turnovers in that game and the frogs turned that into 28 points That that sounds like a pretty good Path to victory for West Virginia, you know the mountaineers defense now You're gonna have nights where you can't shoot the ball But if you're a good defensive team you should be able to get a consistent effort on the defense win I would think so. I think that's been WVU's bread and butter all year. They are a strong defensive team They do a good job with forcing turnovers If they can find a way to convert off the turnovers get some easy baskets where they're not bogged down

Just run and have core offense. I think that will definitely benefit the mountaineers That's something that has happened against the Oklahoma state and BYU They turn some defense into offense So if they can rely on the defense and the rebounding and find a way for a few of their guys to get hot and make a few shots They should be in great good shape. Yeah, you mentioned that Oklahoma state game West Virginia losing Oklahoma state and over time and you know Oklahoma state was a bad defensive team But what they did they were able to to force the tempo and get West Virginia to play in an up and down kind of game A lot of teams haven't been able to do that and if you take a look at the the average possessions these teams are getting I mean a K state on average is getting almost 10 more possessions per game They're they're getting 75 possessions a game WVU's averaging 66. So man tempos a big thing Obviously K state wants to run WVU does not Ross Hodge knows that and he's got to adjust to it Sure, I think you know WVU's got to be selective

If they have something easier early you always want to take that because it's hard to score sometimes and half core offense But if they don't they have to trust their sets and trust their execution get the ball to the right guys You know get on her huff some open three-point looks and and mix in some inside offense Hopefully from Brendan Laureant is coming off a big game against PYU I think if they can get a little inside out offense going early and slow that pace to something they're comfortable with Again, they should be able to dictate the pace and and Really impose their will in this one all right We're talking about madhon our college basketball insider about West Virginia's game tonight at K state Mountainers are favored by two and a half points the total on the game is 142 and a half WVU Trying to get you know reasonably into the conversation for an NCAA at large birth We mentioned this earlier in the hour, you know, they're playing at K state tonight You're not getting here's the thing If you beat K state it really isn't going to help your resume much

But if you lose this game tonight, it's devastating Yeah, Dave. I was thinking about this today I'm a I'm a big fan of like old gangster movies and there's a scene in good fellows We're in the whole cruise in the prison and they have access to a big dinner and they're cutting garlic with a razor And that is WVU's margin for air right now. It is razor thin They have to take care of this this tonight and then try to get UCF At home and hopefully one of the conference tournament and then we're really talking about a potential chance So it's one game at time. I know that's cliche They have to find a way to just focus in for 40 minutes tonight and get K state and then worry about the next one You know what stop me if this sounds like a broken record But West Virginia's left some wins out there on the board this year that they could have had if they had just been a normal Free throw shooting team West Virginia is one of the worst free throw shooting teams in the country You were you were a division one assistant for more than a decade

I mean you are what you are at this point This is going to be WVU's 30th game of the season tonight But let me just ask you about when you've got a player who's a really poor free throw shooter Can you change his form in the middle of the season? What can you do? I mean if you're a bad shooter you're a bad shooter But it shouldn't you at least be trying to to Get some repetition go on or or make some changes in a way that the player shoots at the line Yeah, I think it's more of a medical thing at this time of years It's really tough to change somebody's form and technique during the course of the season That's something that's usually done over spraying the workouts and in summertime You can really reshape somebody's technique But you know during the season It's mind games So you start doing things like making some of your poor free throw shooters make a certain number in a row after practice and You know show them a point in their career where they made a big free throw And I think you try to play with the mind because right now you're not really doing anything with technique

Now strategy wise there is that you know if you're in a close game That's when you start thinking about sub and offense for defense and rotations and who do you want at the line down the stretch So you will definitely consider those things as a coach But this late in the game I'm individual basis. I think it's hard to really change You just have guys You mentally tell them you can do it you can make these and then it belongs to the player They have to own that responsibility, but it's it's also like a recruiting question, right? I mean you see the players that you want to bring into your program and you may have a style of play like Ross Hodges style is defense at least it is for the moment of West Virginia And you're looking at a player and you think oh wow this guy's really athletic. He's got all the analytics He's a poor free throw shooter. Isn't there something inside every coach that says you know what he's a poor shooter He's a poor free throw shooter, but you know what if we get him into our system we can fix him Yeah, I think you can fix that. I think you can fix that, but it's a process Dave you know you you really go through and

Technique and work on a follow-through and hand position on the ball and alignment with the the nail in the free throw line So that's a tough thing to work on consistently during the season But I think you know if you recruit guys with toughness that might not be able to shoot as well as you want I think shooting is a skill that can be learned and it just takes a little bit of time Yeah, it's just funny. I mean there have been some outliers In some of the final seasons for Hodges You know, traditionally what's Virginia has just not been a very good free throw shooting team And this has happened under a series of different coaches seems it's good. It's really tough to figure out It's mind-boggling it drives you crazy, you know, I'm a fan these days. So I get furious when guys miss free throws. There's a reason they're free My wife gets mad at it too. I mean she screams at the TV. So at the end of the day I think you know in press or situations the guys have to be able to deliver and that's just part of being a college basketball player

If you're on the corner crunch time, you know step to the line and make the free throws Hey, you know what sometimes you just get lucky We were talking about this on the show yesterday the yesterday was the anniversary of Will Chamberlain's 100 point game Will was one of the worst free throw shooters Ever in that game against the next race scored 100 points. He was 28 to 32 from the line So sometimes it just works out So maybe it works out for West Virginia tonight. We'll see. Matt. Thanks for your time today. I do appreciate it Always a pleasure Dave. All right, Matt. Honour college basketball insider WVU case date tonight eight o'clock. It is an ESPN plus game.
