1:02How you doing today, Carl? I'm doing good. Can't complain. Not a little. My allergies, which makes no sense at this time of the season, but my allergies are killing me today. It's allergies. Not a cold. No, it's not a cold. No, it's not a cold. My sneezes are like three or four in a row. So if I start one, I've got a finish. Okay, so we gave you such a hard time last week about your outfits, about your matching outfits. You don't match today. Well, how are you? Are you like going against the man or what's your story? My top has a little bit of blue in it. Okay. Blue, blue sweats and it's a little red down here on the leg. So I kind of tied it in. So for the people who are watching on the TV, it just doesn't have a team. Okay, all right. That's fair. So what's the hat? The black diamond. Oh, it's a golf course that I played in up in Minnesota. It's when there was a golf tournament and I got an opportunity to play. So I had to buy a hat. Cool.

2:02Do you remember the black diamond, the singer here in Charleston? Do you mean the mainstay at Monterley Parks all across the country? Yes. Yes. I remember the black diamond. The black diamond. When I saw that on Carl's hat, I thought somehow you would like been at a concert or you knew the guy or he was paying you somehow. No. Not the case. Not the case. The black diamond was pretty talented, right? Of course. Yeah. Who was his deal? He sounded like Neil Diamond. Neil Diamond. Yeah. The black diamond was Neil Diamond. Exactly. Yeah. Oh, wait a minute. Yeah. I should have put that together with the name. I should have done that. The name has no connection at all with a bit. Zero connection of it. No. That's exactly right. All right. We got a lot of stuff. Oh, Carl. I got so much stuff to talk to you about. All right. Well, let me ask you this. Before we get to far down the rabbit hole with it, did you watch any of the combine stuff? Did you watch any of that? Yeah. I did. It was really amazing to me just how athletic these guys are.

3:07I agree. And I mean, running low four threes, like everybody's running it. 300 pound lime running four or five and six and I mean, it's just unbelievable that that kind of athleticism is showing up now. But I still don't necessarily believe in the idea that it has to, it's going to transition into being a necessarily a great football player. You know, I want to talk to you about this because when I watched a little bit of this, and there were so many guys that were so impressive. Yes. One of the guys that really just jumped, jumped off the page was Jeremiah love the running button. He looks so good. My thing is sometimes when I see these guys play college ball and I know they're really good players, what they do at the combine is like just a confirmation that they're good, right? Yes. It's not a situation where you look at Jeremiah love and you say, wow, Notre Dame really

4:10misused this guy or maybe they should have played him more. We knew he was a good player. We just didn't know how good of an athlete he was. Well, and see, there's the tricky peaks to it to me because again, the good player comes to the combine does well. So it's an easy confirmation to say, oh, he's definitely going to be a great player, but it really doesn't always transition that way. I know. You're right. I think that's the, I mean, because think about how many great college quarterbacks went to the combine, blew the roof off of it, get to the NFL and just can't, can't pan out. They just won't, they just, just don't have it. And I don't, and I can't even try to say what it is, what, why that is, but those types of things happen and it's to a point where I, the combine, the numbers that you get at

5:13the combine, I don't know if it really, it necessarily transitioned over to you being a great player. Yeah. And in the quarterbacks throwing, that's the, that's the thing, right? You watch these guys. Yeah. Man, this guy's really good. He's a cat miss prospect, blah, blah, blah. I mean, I was watching a little bit of the NFL network this weekend and they were just going on and on about Ty Simpson from Alabama. Like, oh, man, the ball jumps out and blah, blah, blah, and he does this and, you know, they were talking about how good he is. And I kind of like him. I kind of like him, um, I, you know, there's been tons of analysis on the guy. So you don't really need me to, to, to, to lay out the case from, but, you know, the first half of the year, you, you could make the argument and maybe he was the best quarterback in the country. Second half of the year, suddenly Alabama's got problems on the offensive line. There's no running game. I know that's impossible to say, right? About Alabama, but that was truly the case. And then suddenly he came back to earth. Now, we don't know where this guy's going to go. Is he going to go the top half of the first round? Is he going to be available at the beginning of the second round?

6:13But I did hear one stat today that was interesting about him is in the last 20 years, Simpson only started one year at Alabama. He's a one year starter. Okay. In the last 20 years, one year starters who have gone into the NFL, there's only been one successful one, Cam Newton. Oh, and you know what, and if you remember, Cam Newton, when he was at Auburn and went into the NFL, it was like, he was, he was Superman, right? Yeah. I mean, he's just unbelievable arm and he was so big and he could run. He's it. He's the only example I know that he's the only one and there's been a whole bunch of these other guys, you know, the Anthony Richardson's and there's a whole bunch of these guys who were like one hit wonders and you thought, well, when we get him into the NFL, they're just going to continue to blossom. No, that's not the case. You know, that's the category that Simpson's in and Cam Newton's the only one. And when you start looking at quarterbacks coming out of college who've been, been talked

7:14about and may go first round, you don't see them jump into the league and just dominate the league right out. There's a lot of them who just don't, they just don't pan out. There's another thing, edge rushers, you know, so much talk about edge rushers at the combine and a couple of these guys did really well. Arville Reese from Ohio stayed, he, he looks like he, he's a can't miss prospect David Bailey from Texas Tech. West Virginia got more than they wanted to see out of that guy. So did everybody else in the big 12 for that matter. But man, edge rushers are so hard to predict, right? I mean, every year they're, they're, they're getting bigger and they're getting faster and then there'll be some games and you're thinking, well, you know, this guy was just killing them in the combine. He hasn't gotten remotely near the quarterback in this game. It's just, I really, I really do believe that the change from, I don't care what level

8:15of college that you're playing at from, from collegiate sports to the professional ranks is not like high school college. I just think it's, it's a completely different animal that requires way more than just talent. You know, learning to playbooks, understanding all the terminology, all of these kinds of things and, and walking into a camp and being, you know, a young kid and you've got these grown men out there that's been playing 10 or 11 years and, and know all the tricks and, and you're looking at them, you, you maybe have seen them on TV before. How do you not be a little bit intimidated by that? You know, it's funny. Some, did you watch the DB's? Yes. Okay. Well, I'm sure you saw this, right? As we were talking about this last week, you can practice for weeks to, to run through these obstacle courses and oh my goodness, look at the way you, you run backwards and

9:16get around the cones and all that stuff. That's almost like a, a performance in the, in the winter Olympics, in skating is like, oh, he didn't handle the cone, right? That's going to cost him at least 200 grand. But that doesn't have anything to do with what happens when you play a game, right? You don't, you don't do cones when you're covering a guy and again, I never thought about it until well after my career, the things that we, the things that they have you do. Like, for example, the cones. I don't know necessarily where that comes from, where, where does that tell you that I can be a defensive back? That can be a good one. Do I, is it just the footwork piece of it? I don't, I don't really understand because I'm not doing that footwork. That's a whole different footwork going around the cones and all that. That's a whole different thing. If I, I don't have any issues, let me ask you a footwork question. Okay. Literally by the time you had played at South Charleston and you were a star at Marshall

10:18and then you got drafted and you were with the Vikings, you had literally gone through like hundreds of practices, right? You've been involved in hundreds of practices and I'm going to, I'm going to guess, I don't know this for sure, but the majority of the time you had already devoted your time to be in a corner back, right? Yes. Okay. So what happens when your position coach, when you get to the Vikings is Pete Carroll who would go on to be a wildly successful NFL coach guy who would win a Super Bowl. What did he tell you about the things that were in your game that you needed to, that you needed to tighten up, that you didn't even know you were doing wrong? What, what, what was interesting about Pete was when he came in, he was on the, he was, he was the first one to kind of top man to man a certain kind of way. So we were still playing zone and being off in your back pedal and your planter foot and break to the ball or planter foot break in or out and it was just, it was simple, it was

11:18simple, but it wasn't aggressive. So Pete comes in and all of a sudden footwork is a step in a punch. Okay. And so when he started teaching a step in a punch and I was like, okay, I can, you know, my coordination, I can kind of do this and I started to think that like I can, if this is the basic part of it of me being good, I think I can do this. And it became the basis of what we needed to do to get the hand on the guy and so I, fortunately I was in a situation where I never thought that I was, that I couldn't do it, that it was something that I couldn't do. What he brought in fit me like a glove. That's awesome. And you can, yeah, you can't, you can't beat that. Some of the guys struggled with it and I don't even know really why, but for me, that step punch was like, it just came natural to me. How long was, how long would speak Carol, your position coach?

12:20Um, I want to say, I mean, five, four, five years. Well, I'm at that point, you know, he's probably, as it fair to say, he was probably the most impactful assistant coach you're involved with. Yes. Yes. He's, he's actually the most impactful coach on to me in teaching me something, in changing, changing everything that you know, going to do something totally different. He made it so easy for me to me that, yeah, I have, I'd have to give him all the credit for that. I may have one, we may have to take a break and, and continue this after the bottom of the hour. But when you saw the legion of boom teams that he had in the great defenses, he had in Seattle, did you see some of the characteristics that Pete Carol was teaching us a DB in the, in the amazing secondary they had in those days? I think what he really teaches you is he teaches you confidence, and I think you could

13:23see that in that defense, like you could just everybody thought they were a bit, they're good. Right. And they're not even maybe good, maybe great. You know, I don't get breakfast at McDonald's a lot, but when I do, it's the Egg McMuffin, so I'll be in for that. Now today it was a situation where through the app you could have got one for a dollar, but one for a customer, it normally runs about five bucks now. That's a little bit of food for five dollars. 28:51it's not as rare as you might think in high school basketball there have been twenty seven verified occurrences of a player scoring a hundred or more points in a single game twenty by boys seven by girls danie heater from west virginia hundred and thirty five points for burnsville still holds the boys high school record he made fifty three of seventy field goals during a game against widening nineteen sixty now in a recent addition in january Adrian stubs of mary veil high school in Maryland scored a hundred point i'm sorry in the erosona scored a hundred points in three quarters three hundred points and three quarters that's unbelievable crazy right so that broke a long standing erosona state high school record there are seven one hundred point games in college basketball bival frances has two of them jack taylor did it right twice for granelle college and i will within the last decade but will remains the only nba player to reach triple figures in a single game so the question of the day is

32:04looking for somebody to break it so if i was gonna break that i would want to break that one and i do think it's gonna be broken really i do wow because i think the way guys play today you know there's not a whole lot of teamwork if i get into a game and i'm somewhere around 60 points i'm talking to my players and saying hey guys i'm going after it okay so you're saying most points not in a career but in a game in a game yes in a game all right koop what do you thoughts on this if what would uh which of the records that have never been broken would you say you'd like to have because i got two man i don't know that's uh that's it's so tough i think that uh i mean the the big one of of all is his career home runs right that's what i'm thinking being a home run king man i mean i think that's uh and i think that that's probably the one i think we had one earlier that they were talking about that with the asterix and not the 61 season with maris but i think that that would have to be a pretty good one
