Hey, wherever you're listening to the show today, inside the state of West Virginia, beyond the borders, just trying to get read on what's going on back home. We hope you're having a good day. We're doing all right here in Charleston.

1:01Thanks for asking. Operating out of our flagship 580 WCHS, here in West Virginia's capital city, going to be a busy hour. A lot of stuff to get into in this particular hour. We will take a look at what happened in the financial markets today, and kind of an interesting day on Wall Street, as you might imagine. We'll reset our question of the day about a very big sports anniversary. You may not be aware of. Chef Paul Smith will be here in just a couple of minutes to talk about food, food prep, the restaurant business, the restaurant business here in West Virginia. Chef Paul is one of our most popular guests. We love questions for him about any of those topics. You know the text line, 304, talk 304, 304, 8255, 304. And by the way, stuff that listeners sent in from last week that we didn't get a chance to talk about with Paul, we're going to try to fix that in this segment. So that's coming up in just a minute. We've got the entertainment report coming your way at 425, 433, Kristen Burtz got the Hollywood dirt, and she's got a variety of very interesting topics today.

2:01We'll get into that. That's about a half an hour. A little later on in this hour, we'll open up the on this date file, the five things to know at five o'clock. And at Monday, five o'clock, as usual, Carly, the former NFL all-prod offensive back of the Minnesota Vikings and the Saints will be here for an hour to talk about football and more. So let's go ahead and get this thing started. All right, let's start with what happened in the financial markets today. So you would have thought that with the US and Israeli attack on Iran over the weekend, that it would have driven the markets down. Futures were down, but you know, the way this bull market has worked every time the markets take a dip, people coming in by it. And today was no different. I mean, the Dow was actually down today, but not much. One 10th of 1%. It lost 73 points. The Dow closing at 48,904. S&P actually finished positive on the day. Not a lot, but it was positive. And that's pretty remarkable considering where the future started today on the S&P.

3:03It was up almost three points today, closing at 6881. And NASDAQ finished the day up one third of 1% gained almost 81 points today and NASDAQ closing at 22,748. Now we do have the news that the the Iranians are announcing that the Straits of Hormuz are closed right now. They are closed. And so they vow that they're going to hit any ship that tries to pass through. And that's going to have a big impact on oil prices and on natural gas prices as well. Although oil prices today, you know what? Let me let me do the oil prices before we go to the stocks. In the situation as far as oil goes, many people thought that oil was going to be down double digits today. That didn't occur either. It was a little bit all over the map once we started doing some futures trading on oil yesterday. The oil today was down 8% or I'm sorry, it was up 8% and that gained five dollars and 36 cents.

4:05That's a big hike for sure, but maybe not as big as some people thought originally. WTI and the NIMX closed at $72 and 38 cents. So we're as high on oil now as we've been since last June. And that is something and you're going to see that at the pump. Natural gas to a 4.3% today gained 12 cents. Currently trading still under $3 at $2.98 per unit. So we're still digesting all this information on how it's going to affect natural gas. And remember in the trading of natural gas, you can virtually trade it 24 hours a day. It actually traded 23 hours of the day. It gives you an hour break at 5 p.m. Eastern time. So the snapshot right now, natural gas is up 12 cents and we're at $2.98 per unit. All right, so how's this affecting stocks related to West Virginia that were big percentage gainers or losers today? Not anything really, really wild. Home Depot was down 2.7% today lost $10 and 25 cents.

5:06$370.48 at the close today. As you might imagine, military related stocks were up. Northrop Grumman was up 5.3% today, tacked on $38.48, sitting at $7.62.86 at the close today. And the big integrated oils were way up earlier in the day. Exxon at one point was trading north of 159. It settled in today up 1.3% getting a buck 95 and $154.45. And what about Bitcoin? That's been an interesting day in terms of commodities and crypto. So gold prices continue to rise. I don't have the final gold price today, but I did check it earlier today. And it was north of $5,300 announced. And Bitcoin is up today. And it's a flight to these types of commodities in crypto. Bitcoin is up almost 6% today gaining almost $3,900, $69,000 and change for a coin.

6:11All right, here's our question of the day. Question of the day. It is a significant anniversary in sports. It was on this date in 1962 that Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a game. A pretty interesting answer there. Kip on X, Dave, all time home run MLB record without a nasteryx beside it. Well, there's not one now. But that is an interesting point. After Roger Mayors passed Bay Ruth for a while. Eventually, they did take that asterisk away and then Hank Aaron passed them both. All right, let's bring Paul Smith, Chef Paul Smith into the show. How are you doing today, Paul? I'm great, guys. How about you? Hey, man, thanks for coming on the show. We always enjoy talking to you. We have so many listener questions that we didn't get to last week. And I wanted to get into some of this stuff. I'm not sure what it was about the things we were talking about. But people want to know about pancakes. First of all, 30441, Paul, what are your thoughts about savory pancakes?

8:20Inner out. Oh, in. I love them. When we opened 1010, we had a, what we call a griddle cake. It was like a Johnny cake on the menu. And it was absolutely delicious. Kind of a cornmeal savory. It had like corn kernel. It had a poblano pepper and then finished it off with a little sweet butter and some, some chow chow man. It was absolutely delicious. I might bring that back. Thanks for Brent. Thanks for sparking that memory. I love it. I, you know, I thought those are pretty good questions as well. Here's another one. 304963. Hey, Dave, Jason here from Hurricane. How are you doing, Jason? Dave, I'm a big fan of pancakes. What does Chef Paul recommend for the best pancakes? Are you taking me through the process? The Chef Paul way to do it. Yeah, I think, you know, the key is all the normal ingredients, right?

9:22So, you know, you've got to add just a little bit of salt, the flour. I add in the egg yolk and then I do whip the egg white separate. You know, and then whatever else you normally put in your, crab or in your, uh, take, you know, milk, water, whatever. And then I will whip the egg whites, add everything in there together and then fold in the egg whites and it makes it very, very fluffy. All right. Are you big fan of like, uh, chocolate chip pancakes? Do you go for that? No, I don't necessarily go for that. I think a lot of things like the first one or two bites are delicious, but then you get to the fifth or sixth bite and it just gets to be too much. I think chocolate chip pancakes. A lot of those kind of, you know, butterscotch pancakes, uh, whatever it is, you know, I think I'm, I'm a pancake, you know, just a wonderful little bit of sweetness pancake.

10:25And then if you want to add whatever it is to it, you can do that on the side. So whether it's jam, whether it's, you know, uh, a compound butter of some time, whether it's banana foster, you know, whatever it is that you add on there, I think that is for the side. Get the pancake, the pancake. You know what? When you go to iHOP, um, they, they have the little, the little carrying thing that has like four, five different types of syrup. I think about that, but you know, when I end up going there, I never use it. I just go back to the old steady maple. Yeah, maple syrup is the best, especially if it's a little warm. I think that's the key, uh, it pours better. It just, you know, it, it, it, a warm maple syrup is, is the, uh, I think it's the peak to resist all for the top. You got to have warm maple syrup. All right. You want to go for another couple more questions because we're loaded with them today for you. Uh, here's another one. Three, four, two, three. Hey, Dave, this is Tim. How are you doing, Tim? He, he says, Hey, Dave, ask Paul what his favorite snow day stew is.

11:30So that's a good question. All right. What do you, you know, you're stuck at the house. So what's the plan? Well, unfortunately, I rarely get snow, snow days. Um, so I would say like your normal, like short rib, uh, just beef stew. I, you know, big chunks of carrots, chippellini onions, uh, you know, chunks of celery, maybe a little, uh, parsnip, something like that. You get your short rib, your boneless short rib, cut it into chunks, sear it up real good so it gets a nice char on it, deglaze it with a little white wine, a little stock, and just let it go until it smells up the house, until, you know, it's fork tender. And then that, you know, honestly is great for three or four days. By the way, um, we're, we're almost out of questions for Paul. Hey, Paul, what would happen if they made car fresheners that smelled like popcorn or fried chicken? Oh, people, we would probably do more work from our car. We would sit in the car. I would be doing this segment, segment right now from my car, you know, you might have people drifting off, uh, you know, pulling over just, you know, in that, especially in the afternoon, when you're getting that hangry on, you know, just go out to the car, take a whiff, come back in, you're ready to rock. Cooper, you know, I've, we've been doing this show together for 13 years and we've had questions like this and then are out, right? Yeah. That you're not a big fan of the food air fresheners. But this is just also positive. I really don't want to say anything like, nice, I couldn't smell that stuff all the time. I can't, I can't, I'll just leave what Chef Paul said, standard.

13:34I tell you what, though, man, is there anything, is there a better smell, um, that's unexpectedly good than roll it into a KFC? Oh, gosh, it's so delicious. I mean, I'm probably more of the butter popcorn, uh, yeah, smell popcorn, butter popcorn all day. And the funny thing is I only eat buttered popcorn when I'm going to the movies, which is very rare. I do just the slightly salted or lightly salted, but Kerry is a, you know, butter, butter, butter, dip it in butter, you know, dripping down your arm butter. Yeah, and that's your wife. Hey, I wanted to ask you, I sent you a couple of stories today and I thought this was interesting about steaks for beginners, steaks for beginners. And this story I sent you today talked about the fact that the ribeye is basically the best place to start. Do you agree with that and do you have any tips for beginners who want to take the leap into making their own steaks? Yes. Um, I think that ribeye is a, you know, that, I don't know if that's the beginner's

14:39steak or not. I think that, um, I would probably go with a sirloin or something like that that might be not only a little less expensive. So if I mess it up and turn it into a hockey puck, you know, I'm out $10 instead of $25 or $30. But ribeye also, because it's got the fat in it, it tends to want to flare up on you on the grill. Whereas, you know, a nice sirloin steak, uh, is not a lot of fat, not a lot to deal with, you know, you can marinate it, you can throw it on there. It's not going to flare up on you. Flee is, is probably easy as well. But again, it costs three times as much. So I, I mean, hey, whatever it is that you like, if you go out and you order ribeyes, then do a ribeye. But yeah, well, just watch out for the flare up on the grill. I tell you what, we're coming to the end of the segment. I don't know what it is about the water today, but we're getting a lot of questions. Let's get back to the listeners. 301-221 here is Todd in Hedgesville. He says, Paul, I love old bay seasoning in my soup. Any kind of soup? Do you like old bay?

15:48I, I think I like old bay in moderation. I, I really like it in a little bit in a crab cake. Maybe a touch on a lobster roll. Definitely in a boil, 100%, any kind of like that, you know, Maryland crab boil. I do like it on potato. I had it on potato chips. I was a little weird about it. I did have a beer a long time ago that was, I think, at a game in Baltimore, oral stadium and that was unknown. All right, I got 90 seconds here, but I want to get one more question in 304-669, Paul, how do you make your chicken, Marcella, and do you serve it over angel hair pasta? I don't serve anything over angel hair pasta. I think in a restaurant, angel hair pasta is tough to do because you can't do it all in minute and it does break up on you

16:50a little bit. It's really hard to get El Dante as well. So in a restaurant, we kind of cook our pasta ahead of time and then heat it up in our little pasta cooker, just re-firm it. So I, I tend to stay away from that at home. Sure, absolutely. The chicken Marcella, obviously, Marcella wine. I do mushrooms a little bit of a veal stock and a, and a touch of just to hit it with a little bit of butter at the end or, and then your demi glazed. So that's kind of mine, but, you know, there's so many different ways to do it. I'd be interested to hear, you know, different versions of chicken Marcella. Maybe we'll mark that down for next week. That's a delegate's pausing today at the beginning of its floor session for a memorial resolution in honor of Berkeley County Delegate, Larry Cump, who died over the weekend. Born on January 27, 1948 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Larry Cump dedicated his life to the principles of integrity and honesty in public policy. Delegate Cump was 78 years old. House Finance Committee originated the bill Friday afternoon and passed it to the floor. Federal administration currently right now with their tariffs and the retaliatory tariffs have caused us a lot of issues and it caused a lot of West Virginia jobs. Let's start with this West Virginia true crime story that's getting a Hulu docu series. What are the details on that? Yeah, so on March 6th, so four days from now Hulu will have a three-part docu series called Friends Like These, the Murder of Skylar Nice. So some of you may recognize that that was a Margin Town West Virginia true crime story. Do you remember it? Oh, absolutely. Yeah, it was raging here a dozen years ago, a little more than a dozen years ago, 2012. Yeah, it was 2012 and obviously a sad story because she was 16. Obviously her friends

30:25deceived her and wound up being the ones who caused her death. You know what? I'm going to guess that once this premieres, we're probably going to get a lot of people who remember this who knew these girls and will be talking about them again. So it begins on March 6th on this week. Yes, absolutely. All three episodes will drop. So I just wanted to kind of alert everyone because I have a feeling that this is going to be a water cooler moment for you guys. Yeah, I think you remember the story. I think you're right. This series, it's a three-part series, it's going to cover the late night outing, the initial disappearance, the eventual confession, and the investigation into why her best friends committed this crime. It's a grizzly story. It really is a grizzly story and I always wonder, especially now that you have one that is local to you in West Virginia, I always wonder how the families feel about this. I know some families want to get the story told and really have people remember Skylar. Other people, you know, when it's other true crime stories, they don't want to talk about it at all. And they

31:25feel like it's an invasion of privacy when date line or 2020 or any of those shows go and do an investigative report on a murder. So let's talk about a couple of other things. So the actor awards just made the Oscar race more exciting. You know, in terms of this, man, it just looks like sinners is going to be taking home a lot of awards when we get to the Oscars. Now this depends. If you've looked at the run-up to this, it's been one battle after another. Or, you know, if you look at Best Actor, it's been Timothy Chalamet for Marty Supreme. And last night, when they gave Michael B. Jordan the award for Best Actor for sinners, the apple cart was upset. And so I'm sure Timothy Chalamet was probably surprised. Michael B. Jordan was shocked to get it. But you do have to remember that a lot of the SAG members are also Academy members. So they will be voting again for Michael B. Jordan. In fact, it's matched up 24 out of 31 times in that category. Wow. Wow. It's a good stat. Hey, you know, I got to ask you, you know, we,

32:29we have a situation going on right now in Iran, where the United States and Israel attacked Iran over the weekend. That continues to rage. Now normally when that happens, there's usually some episodes on television that get shelved or, you know, there's the networks usually make some sort of moves in in relation to the breaking news that's been going on now for days. Have we seen any of that yet? I haven't heard of anything being pulled just yet. So we will see how this plays out because this obviously looks like it's going to be at least a few weeks of conflict if not longer. So that may impact some of the spring season for television shows. If they have a topic that maybe sort of crosses the line with what's happening with the US and Iran, we will see how this plays out. All right. I got to ask you. Did you get a chance to watch Marshall's last night on CBS? I did not because I was covering the actor award. So that was, that was the big one. Yeah. Well, I mean, my wife watched it and I watched it too. And she had some pretty interesting questions

33:32about it about the timing of these yellow stone offshoot series. This is the first one that's really made it to air. Was there any rhyme or reason about why this one came came first? As far as I know, it's honestly been what finishes first because Taylor shared in has his hands in so many different cookie jars. And I feel like the the Madison, which is coming up soon with Michelle Fiker. Right. That one has been in production or I should say in pre production for over two years because they had to finagle some of the situation. I think around Kurt Russell's schedule. So it's been really, really interesting how these all sort of like land in our laps. And I don't necessarily think there's any rhyme or reason. It's how do we get the schedule? How do we get it out as soon as possible? Here's the thing also about Marshall's last night. I mean, it is in the prime spot for CBS. It's right after 60 minutes. And it's right before hacker, which is like I mean, tracker, rather, which is the number one show on TV right now. You know, that can be a

34:35blessing and it can be a curse too. Because if you don't really pull the numbers in that slot eight o'clock after CBS has 60 minutes and football in the fall, you're not going to be you're not going to be in that slot long. No, you certainly won't. And it would be probably pretty embarrassing to Taylor Sheridan, who has a great track record. I will say that we are going to see the ratings within, you know, the next 24 hours or so. I have a feeling that this was a great success for them. That's my guess. We'll see. I, you know, I think the reviews have been on it have been kind of mixed. I wasn't all that impressed, but I'll probably watch it again. All right. And people will at least check out the first episode. Yes. Yeah. It's, you know, it kind of set the scene last night. All right. So now that we know that Paramount Plus is taking over Warner Brothers discovery Netflix is out of out of the, out of the running. This thing's coming together very quickly. And we're getting a lot of very big news. So now we, we're finding out that Max and Paramount Plus are going to be

35:36the same app. They are going to be in one streaming service. And you know, I was thinking about this day, even if we've been together long enough that streaming services became a thing. And then everyone had one. And now we're just seeing them all merge into a couple of apps. So we've been together a while. Yeah. I think it's like 12 or 13 years. So it's kind of crazy to see the evolution of all of this. And the fact that Paramount Plus and HBO Max will be one streaming service once the completion of the merger between Paramount and Warner Brothers discovery happens. This could take up to 18 months altogether. So don't panic just yet. But Paramount has been very, very specific saying that we are going to put the two services together. But we are still going to make sure that HBO, the HBO brand will operate with independence because it has such a legacy of prestige shows. Okay. So when Paramount Plus launched the app eventually rolled the showtime into it, right? So showtime is already in the Paramount Plus app. Now HBO Max will be there as well.

36:42I guess the $64,000 question is how much? How much a month? Oh, you're definitely going to see a price increase. You and I both know this, of course, even without them announcing anything like that just yet. And we're unclear too what the setup is going to be. Is HBO Max going to be like a tile within the service? Or will it be completely integrated? Because I think at a certain point like we're seeing with Disney Plus, we're eventually going to see who go away because it's starting to become completely integrated into Disney Plus. I have a feeling at some point that will those lines will blur and HBO will finally blur into Paramount Plus. And don't don't forget with HBO coming into the Paramount Plus app that they're not only bringing series and they're bringing movies, they're also bringing sports as well. I mean, there's college basketball, there's hockey there, there's the NCAA tournament. So, you know, for some people who don't care about movies and TV, but they love their sports, suddenly they have to start carrying about this story because that's where it's going to be.

37:45One more. Tell me a little bit about this Tilly Norwood situation and AI. What's happening there? So you may have heard it. I think this is about six months ago. They talked about the first AI actor Tilly Norwood. She has social media accounts and everything and they are going to be doing TV projects and movie projects with her. But now we are seeing a real development into the Tilly Norwood universe or what they're calling Tillyverse. It's going to be a dynamic and constantly evolving digital universe. Get a load of this. We're Tilly in a new generation of AI characters will they'll live, they'll collaborate, they'll build careers and we're going to be able to watch all of them as entertainment, whether we like it or not. But remember, these are all AI digital actors. They are not real people. All right. So what's the next move? Well, will the actors guild be pushing back against this? I'm imagining they will be. Yeah. I mean, we've been pushing back big time and in fact, let's go back to 2023. Remember,

38:48we had all of the strikes with the writer's guild and the actor's guild. We are back to contract negotiations. The actor's guild goes up first this time. We are hoping to avoid a strike because I don't think anyone wins in a strike in a situation like this. But AI is the number one topic with all of this. So we'll see how it all plays out. The Tillyverse. I mean, so I guess there will be characters that will interact with her and she'll have her own. Will this be a series? Will it be a music videos? What are we looking at here? What's going to happen in the Tillyverse? I think it's definitely going to be things like probably TV shows or we're seeing all these vertical shorts. So maybe like small like one minute versions of what's happening in Tillyverse. But they're saying they're very committed to this. They're like, she's not just an AI character. She's a brand. She's a personality. And they say she is the future global superstar telling stories through a narrative arc. What about could she be potentially a spokesperson

39:48for a brand? Oh, absolutely. And that's how they're marketing her. I mean, they already have an agency representing her. So she's got a talent agent, even though she doesn't exist. So there will be brands who will probably align with the Tilly Norwood saying, hey, we'd love her to pitch this soda brand or this movie or this vacation. It's really mind-boggling when you really think about it because this is going to be a game changer for Hollywood and not necessarily a good one. All right. Coup say, for example, you've got a product that you like. And suddenly you see Tilly Norwood is the is the sponsor, the spokesperson for that brand. Would that turn you off? I don't know. Would it impact whether you would continue to support that product? I don't think I get grand that I'm going to get that granular into what a company's using or not. It all depends. It's hard to make a blanket statement on something like that. I'm

40:48generally unimpressed by this sort of thing. And I think that maybe it doesn't have to be well because they're using an AI actress. It may just be generally because I'm unimpressed that I would be unimpressed with the ad. I don't think it has to be for a specific reason. I've seen a lot of this stuff and people think we've reached past the uncanny valley and we definitely haven't. People just forgot what reality is. And I think that when more and more people try to force unreality on us, pretending it's reality, there's going to be a little bit more of a pushback. And I think I got we got to leave it there.
