Thomas Doig

Thomas Doig was a British-Canadian naval officer who served in the Royal Navy during the American Civil War. He later became the commander of the British steamship SS Great Republic, which sank under mysterious circumstances off the coast of Oregon. Doig's involvement in the disaster led to his rebranding as a military man and his disappearance from public life.
