Robert Fortune was a British explorer, collector, and writer. Born in 1812 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Fortune worked as a botanist and collector for the British East India Company. He traveled extensively throughout Asia, collecting plants and documents related to tea. Fortune's travels took him to China, where he spent three years exploring the northern provinces.
