Robert Alter

Hebrew Bible translator and scholar

Robert Alter is an American translator and biblical scholar. He was born in 1935 in Brooklyn, New York. Alter studied at Yeshiva University and later at Harvard University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Hebrew literature. He is a professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. Alter has translated several major works from the Hebrew Bible into English, including the Complete ArtScroll Tanakh.
