Matsuo Bashō was a Japanese poet, writer, and artist of the Edo period. He is best known for his haiku poetry, which emphasized the beauty of nature and the fleeting nature of life. Bashō was born in 1644 and died in 1694. He is considered one of the greatest poets of Japanese literature and continues to be widely studied and admired today.
