Karol Józef Wojtyła was a Polish Catholic priest who served as the Pope of the Catholic Church from 1978 to 2005. He was the first non-Italian Pope in over 450 years, elected on April 16, 1978. As Pope, he addressed global issues such as human rights and nuclear disarmament. Before becoming Pope, Wojtyła was a professor at Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
