Evaristo Carmona

South African politician and president

Evaristo Carmona was the first black president of South Africa, serving from 1999 to 2004. He was a doctor by profession and later became a politician. He is known for his advocacy of reconciliation and national unity. Born in 1937 in the village of Venda, he moved to South Africa in 1964 and became a naturalized citizen. Carmona is also a poet and novelist.
