The Adelaide father of three plummeted up to 25 meters while riding with his wife Shannon at Cape Tribulation on October 22nd, 2019. Midway across the 86 meter cable between towers, the couple suddenly lost speed after a loud bang shook the structure. One survived with serious injuries that kept her in hospital for 10 days, but Dean did not make it. Shannon testified she felt the sharp drop during a fast descent and screamed, while her husband initially believed staff were just messing around. She woke up on the forest floor, called for him with no reply and waited minutes for help. A nearby tourist with ski patrol medical training rushed in first, grabbing equipment like a defibrillator that young staff had never used. He took over the scene since they seemed unprepared.
