Hey, good morning, this is Strawberry, how y'all doing out there today? I hope everybody is doing well, if not doing well, let's find a way to get well, look well, and be well. Today we're going to start the day off with the word up today. We're going to still follow behind it. It's the Merriam Webster word of the day for March 6th. Today's word is vaunted, spelled V-A-U-N-T-E-D. Vaunted is an adjective. It describes someone or something that is often spoken of or described as very good or great. Here's the word used in a sentence from Den of Geek by Lacey Bauer. After much initial hype, the much vaunted new production partnership fizzled out after just two seasons, leaving the franchise scrambling for a new direction and without a lead actor in its signature role.
The verb vaunt has been used since the 15th century with the meaning to make a vain display of one's own worth or attainments, in other words, to brag or boast. Over time, vaunt developed the meaning to boast of a particular thing, as in the promotional flyer vaunts the natural beauty of the area, and that use gave rise to the adjectival form vaunted. The history of vaunt and vaunted leads back to the Latin word vaunus, with the meaning's lacking content, empty illusory, marked by foolish or empty pride. The word vain itself is also a descendant of vaunus. With your word of the day, I'm Peter Sakalowski. He's a great technique for you to make it so that you do the things you really don't want to be doing. When I was running the workshop, I was running earlier this week. We were talking about, how can you make time for yourself when it's really hard to do at work?
And this woman put up a hand, and she was amazing, this participant, she said, I do this thing. Where? When I need a break, I'll walk down to the bottom of my garden when I'm working from home. And often at the bottom of the garden, there is my neighbour, and I can see her over the fence, and we nod to each other, and she goes, fire drill, and I say, yeah, fire drill. What she's done is changed the environment here by giving it a name, calling it fire drill. It makes it something that, when she's not very good at going taking breaks for herself, it makes it something that she can do. The other way to think about this is, you know, you're coming to the weekend, and maybe you've got some stuff that you know you should be doing, and you're already thinking, how do I get out of it? What else could I do that means I don't have to do it? You know, things like clearing out a cupboard, washing the car, going through your finances, looking at a spreadsheet for ages, anything like that, where you're like, I really find this very boring. The trick is to give yourself the environment, change the environment so you can make it fun.
I remember when I was going through a phase of, I've got to make content for my business, and I find it really hard to sit down and do it. And so what I started calling it was content retreat day, meaning it was like a spa retreat. Same for, if you have old goodness, the ironing man, I think of it like, film watching time. Where are you then going at a film on, and I make it so that I can do the ironing? Your brain is an amazing thing, and your brain can be convinced, well, let me put it to you like this. If your brain can be convinced by all the negative thoughts and the stories that run through your mind, it can be convinced by you telling yourself that you've got to get out of the building right now for a break, because you know, basically it's like having a fire drill, or you can go and do your content and do all those jobs that you need to do, because actually let's make it like a content retreat day, where you sit, you go to a cafe, you sit there all day, and you do the work that you want to do, you make it fun. I tell you what, some of the best financial planning I've done for myself in my house
is taking the van, sitting by a lake, taking a coffee, and sitting looking at the view while I fill in a spreadsheet. What can you do with the thing that you don't want to do that makes it attractive? I'll be back tomorrow with another episode of Every Day positivity for you. In the meantime, have a great day and remember, you have 100% got this. From...
