Jones and Keefe — Will Christian Gonzalez play in Week 1?. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
Have an idea if you are going to play week one. You know I'm focused on today. Right now, it is practice. How do you focus on today with the contract still lingering? I mean it's football, it's my job. I gotta do what I gotta do so. What in your mind sticks out when you think about a rematch with Seattle? Yeah, I mean just, that's a great team, a great organization. You know they've built pieces, they've kept their team and did what they've done. You know respect the organization and their players and I know we look forward to it. Do you have any impression of whether or not the contract will get done before Wednesday? Not sure. I don't know. Jones and Keith right now on WWEEI. Alright, welcome into Jones and Keith, WWEEI. Jones today, Mego is back, Mego how are you? What's up?
Oh you know. Big holiday weekend coming in. Huge holiday weekend, you got any plans? Working. Working! Yeah somebody's gotta work, somebody's gotta hold it down. That's a good point. It'll be me if you paint me. Alright, Big Dog Show. Big Dog Show tomorrow. Okay good. And then I'll be in on Monday. Alright, very good. Who you working with on Monday? Please, Dan Ball. Dan Ball, alright very good. Very exciting. We're only a few more sleeps away for our Patriots season. We are sneaking up on Patriots season. Yeah. Wednesday night, you ready for it? I'm ready for it. Okay. I think the question is whether the front office and Christian Gonzalez are ready for it? Yes, the good question. That doesn't have a whole lot of movement. No, it doesn't. Not at all. And it's funny. I don't know if you believe this. It seems like local reporters, Tommy Kurnin's, Mike Reese's of the world seem to be more confident in a deal getting done than the Adam Shepters, Jeremy Fowler, some of the national reporting that we've gotten. Does that your sense as well? So I don't want to like, I don't want to source guests because I find that to be very rude. I don't source shame. Well, not a source. We have one person at the station that does that, but I don't.
It's not about source shaming. I find it to be in port taste to source guests. Source guests. To say, ooh, I think they're talking to so and so or they're getting, they're being tipped by so and so. Well, sometimes it's obvious. Well, I do think with the national guys and gals, I tend to lean towards they're probably talking to agents. Yes. And so when I hear somebody like Adam Shepters say, oh, they're still pretty far apart or Jeremy Fowler say that. That makes me guess that it's coming from Christian Enzalysis camp, which makes me much more worried. Because I think Christian Enzalysis, the one who is the roadblock here, not because like, not in like a stubborn way, but because he knows what he wants. And it seems that he's asking for particular language in his contract. And the crafts are sitting there going, we don't really do that. And we're not really going to do that or should but should they? So that's right. We should. Okay. So that's why I would say they're more the roadblock. Okay. But I mean, that's how I would view it. But we don't know the exact particulars, right? And we set it up the time when Robert Kraft, what going on like a month was like,
we offered him the highest contract for a corner. And you're like, well, what does that really mean? Welcome to training here. Yeah, that was the beginning. What can I make Christian Enzalysis the richest man in the world? And you're like, okay, like based on what? They're like the highest contracting team history. And you're like, what? 29 month. Who really cares about that? I know that doesn't. That's not what we're talking about. We're not in 26th and cash spending. We don't really care if he's the richest guy on the team. A little strange. Christian Enzalysis spoke yesterday. Now, this was not a planned Q&A. No. He got kind of ambushed, I guess, in the locker room. Hey. But good job by the reporter from I believe it was Fox 25. Yeah, Lauren Walsh. So she got right over there. And he didn't give you the, I'm not going to talk to you. No. I feel like if Rich Keif came running up to him, he would have been like, no thanks. But he answered a couple of questions. And Nick, we have this. And we can start and stop this, too. It was only a couple of questions. But I do think it's fairly telling. So he was Enzalysis yesterday inside the locker room. Have an idea if you are going to play week one. You're on focus on today.
Right now. This practice. How do you focus on today with the contract still lingering? I mean, it's football. It's my job. I got to do it. I got to do so. What in your mind sticks out when you think about a rematch with Seattle? Yeah, I mean, just, it's a great team, a great organization. You know, they've built pieces. They've kept their team and did what they've done. You know, respect the organization and their players. And I know we look forward to it. Do you have any impression of whether or not the contract will get done before Wednesday? Not sure. I don't know. Okay. Kind of a lot in there. So once again, just not confirm whether he's going to play on Wednesday. Do you do that as just sort of like a leverage play? He did say football is my job. Do what I got to do. Do what I got to do. Meaning if I feel like I don't play. I'm playing football is his job.
True. But break down word by word. The very little mumbles that Christian is always. We are sound like a little Jones and Keith interview right there. He did. He's reverting back to that guy. Yeah, I don't love that. Feel the frustration. But also it's not lost on me that he said Seattle like has retained their players and has brought their guys back. So that's a shot at the Patriots for not doing the same thing. Much nice. Yeah, right. Oh, it's exactly what he's saying. I mean, it's his friend Devon with her spoon and Jackson's with the jig, but same draft class as him. He's all got monster contracts ready to go for Wednesday. He's not. Do you view him not confirming whether he's going to play just as sort of like leverage gamesmanship? Or is it like I'm not going to say no, but because my stance all along is he's not playing without the contract. Really and yeah, 100%. And the way Rabel and Gonzalo spoke this week. I feel like it's more evidence to that. But I mean, we're going to have to wait and see. So the way that I read it is that he is still pushing for that contract and if he can use game one is some kind of deadline then he's not going to tip his hand and say I really really want this done but you know if I have to I'll go out and play this game and see what happens because this is the Super Bowl rematch and from raples point of view I just think I get the sense that even in the building variable isn't completely transparent with everybody about what's going on with that contract that it is so so
siloed of a conversation because there's this I know you could say paranoia about leaks and information getting out that it's like nope everything is so buttoned up that he's not going to he's not going to tip his hand either way. You can dial some if you want on the Gonzalez conversation that won't be our only conversation throughout the day 617 7797937 coming up at 1 o'clock our coordinator series continues you know we have a coordinator on when Jones is out. Yes, scared third straight coordinator we've had where he is not going to be a part of the show. He doesn't want to talk to Jeremy Springer now who we had on a couple years ago and was great and then Mike on when also right around the 1 o'clock hour here from both. Springer and Mike on when who as it is a Patriots Friday Robert spleen was on earlier today Mike Raeble was on earlier today Drake may on later today. Oh boy this is going to be the first time that we've heard from him. Yeah long time. Tommy DeVito all preseason long so there hasn't been a Drake interview and he was asked earlier in camp about Gonzalez's contract and if you like thinks about his own future contract and he gave a very.
PC answer you know what he really should because we heard about the cash budget when Elliott Wolf was asked that same question like yeah there's a lot of considerations including the cash budget what. Well I don't know if he's going to be asked today or not but one of those like you see around the league and even in other sports right with Victor one but you know I'm going to be like it's an unfair question but it'd be like you know are you willing to take less to have a better team yeah Tom Brady did he should say no he shouldn't have to do that Tom Brady doing that shouldn't affect all these other future contracts and yet you know it's going to be brought up. Are the two questions with the Gonzalez I guess would be do you think a deal gets done between now and Wednesday and if the answers know do you think he plays. I don't think a deal gets done but I do think he plays. I think I for Jones is that I think that's what Jones is that Jones thinks he's going to play week one but we're getting closer and closer without a contract I maintain he's not. And clearly I don't think they're going to get a contract on it I don't know what the actual sticking point is it seems like it might be upfront money maybe that's what I think it's I think it's the money at signing everybody is just.
In on the guaranteed money but I think he's looking at truly like the fully guaranteed money and looking at what we're Devon witherspoon God with those first two years and I think that that's probably the kind of language that Christian's all is very interested in. But in terms of him playing week one or not I just followed the trend that we saw in training camp where I did not think that he was going to be in those practices in pads going up against AJ Brown and he did what about the joint practices and then he eventually he sat out I think week one he will put his effort forward and play and if this contract is still not getting done. Then we see him pull back a little bit and say you know what I got something going on with this hamstring this so Trent Mcduffie last year we brought this up I think last time you were on he didn't have the contract that he wanted. Played the season and then at the end the chiefs are kind of out of it and he went out and missed the last four games of the season so I traded that got traded and then got his money elsewhere. So the longer this takes it feels like at the very least 2027 is going to be Gonzalez on another team.
If he's on the team here in 2026 I just wonder how much he's going to play how many games he's going to play what kind of performance what kind of effort are you going to get out of them. You were at the press conference with Raeble yesterday. He had a weird comment about Gonzalez where he's like he's like pretty like comfortable he's not lazy. I didn't say he's lazy and you're like nobody accused you of saying he's lazy. Well, doesn't that make you feel like there are some bunny ears about what a rabbit ears about what. Boney ears. Like I'm sorry it was a little bit before my time that people used to have a. And tennis up from Mike Raeble hearing that oh, Christian's Alice he's not a physical tackler. We have heard that from at least one insider down there. But I don't really agree with that. But I think that Mike Raeble is with this Christian's Alice situation like analyzing his own words so closely because he doesn't want to offend the player or make it seem like the team doesn't believe in him or anything to the point that he's like he's a comfortable guy.
No, I mean he doesn't just sit back there is a way to say he's even killed. Yeah, he doesn't get super stressed out.
