Your kid gets caught on video calling another kid “a loser nobody likes.” Dr. Becky Kennedy's first move isn’t punishment, it’s asking herself "what would make my kid something that mean".

Punishment is a “me against you” framework, and she’s never once wanted to punish someone she likes. She just doesn’t like them in that moment.

Kids respond to the version of themselves you reflect back. Call your kid bad and then demand good behavior, and you’ve basically asked them to act good while feeling bad inside. That never works.

Never ask a question you already know the answer to. “Did something happen at school today?” isn’t curiosity, it’s a criticism wearing a question mark, and kids feel it instantly.

The line that changes everything: “You’re a good kid.” Not as an excuse, but because you can’t reflect on bad behavior without a good, centered self to do the reflecting.

If bad behavior collapses into “I’m a bad person,” learning literally shuts down. Identity and behavior have to stay separate or nothing changes.

Sometimes the bullying isn’t about the other kid at all. It’s a kid who overheard nasty words between parents and is quietly carrying that stress into the hallway.
