Why has Washington sanctioned the Palestinian leadership?

The Trump administration accuses members of the Palestine Liberation Organization and officials of the Palestinian Authority of undermining peace efforts. It comes as more Western governments are openly criticising Israel -- calling on it to end the war on Gaza and move towards a two-state solution -- and as more countries announce their intention to recognise Palestinian statehood. Among the discussions is growing support for Hamas to disarm and for a reformed Palestinian Authority to govern Gaza. So what's behind the US sanctions?
