Who's the Cubs' stopper?

How do they keep winning? These guys are a bunch of turd nuggets. Yeah, I get this kid with his dance. The throw is 130 miles an hour. But all of a sudden, Dan, Dan, what is it? I mean, what is it? What do you want? It took him forever to figure out he's got two pitches.

1:01Yes. Okay, you'll pick one of the other. Really? Really good, though. I love the emotion. The kid, the big kid with his head. The way he plays with emotions. I love that. But position players, so who are you going to take? I'm taking Tureo and I'm taking Tureo, so what we got? Yeah, I think he's got a pretty clear complexion now. Doesn't he? You know, you can get zits into your 40s, people. The combination of zits and gray hair isn't any fun, either. He's probably got the zits because he's grinded. That they're grinding. Also, when you work out for a living. I was too busy grinding my absolute face off. You might get some pimples when the humidity is a billion percent. I got a zit right now on the right side of my cheek and I'd saw my brother. Could let, leave it up to your brother. It's a nice zit mark. Big, bloody zits. It's great what did you do to your face? You look like a raspberry pizza. It's the zit off. Something was happened when it homogenizes. Whatever it touches, it turns round. Did you try scrubbing it off? I've even tried running through a car wash.

2:01Laila Rahini, Mark Grote, midday's 10 a.m. to do on Chicago Sports Radio 104 3, the score. We are absolutely blessed here on the Rahimi and Grote show on 104 3 to score to have what is an absolutely gorgeous day in West Lake View. We are broadcasting live today from Cody's public house. This is just such a great scene out here. We are outdoors on the patio as the stage is set right now on this lovely day at this classic. Is there a more classic neighborhood style bar than the one we are broadcasting from today? Cody's public house. Laila, I know that you have spent plenty of time here at Cody's public house because it's a great place to spend time. Yeah, and with former score employees. So I'm glad to see current score employees too. I've done shows here with MEC Sports Chicago. It is one of my favorite spots. You have a beautiful beer garden.

3:05You've got popcorn. You've got dogs. We have pops. The good puppy dog hanging out with us today. It's just a great spot to hang out and watch football and enjoy the weather today. Can't really complain about the assignment today. No, I could probably do this every day. It's absolutely gorgeous out here. And unfortunately, it was another rough night for baseball for both of our teams. The white socks lost to the pirates four to two. We will get to them. But the cubs, they get swept. They got swept by the brewers. They were swept by the brewers in Milwaukee. Brewers beat the cubs eight to six. We could probably say the score probably wasn't even as close as it actually was because it was a blowout until the ninth inning when the cubs did score five. Can't take that away from the cubs, but too little too late for the Chicago cubs. And it was an unfortunately an absolute dud for Kevin Gossman for innings six runs eight hits six strikeouts.

4:06A couple of walks gives up three homers. The yellow home run, which just gets over the wall in the first inning going Oppo. But Layla, you were so smart to bring this up in one of our meetings earlier this week. And that was you kind of threw your arms up and you said, who's the stopper for this cubs team right now? As in who's the starter that's going to come in and you know that they are going to give you a strong six or seven innings every time. Well, that's my point is when you consider what the cubs are doing right now and the bullpen stopped Matt Boyd from being the stopper the other day. Matthew Boyd gave it as all, but unfortunately it just didn't shake out. You can't say to me that any starter right now and you want to you want to say Clay Holmes, you want to say Matthew Boyd, you want to say Kevin Gossman. You want to say David Peterson, given the price that was paid for the three pitchers acquired by a trade. That was the whole point, the whole damn point. And when you can't say that the guy who is the white whale that Jed Hoyer and the O Epstein were obsessed with for so many years.

5:12I'm sorry to always think of the phrase Kenny gets as man, but when you're obsessed with somebody for a long time, they're going to be different than who they were the year before and unfortunately we've seen Kevin Gossman not be consistent in his start so far for this cubs team. He's not your stopper. Matthew Boyd is as close as I can get Clay Holmes got teed up the other day. You know, we've seen David Peterson unfortunately. You can have a great outing, but if you only go for a third, that's not the guy either. But I just don't have a lot of confidence not only in the cubs starting pitching, but obviously in the bullpen either. And that's what makes this so tough. Don't have a stopper. Don't have a closer right now. I had this start for Kevin Gossman a little bit different, but it reminded me of bits just the way he got hit up and the approach that the batters had the dud that he had in Washington, which was different because he was really good. It was Gossman in that game for three innings. He had a no hit or going and then then they just got punished or Gossman got punished by Washington. Gossman was the last time he played against Milwaukee. He was fantastic. You want to see him follow that up.

6:17He was great against at Arizona, but he said, Duds at Washington, a dud against Cincinnati. And we must listen to Jason Kipness, who by the way is going to be on this show at 1125 today. Can't wait to talk to Jason Kipness who's doing the pre and post game shows on marquee over the last couple of days. This guy like like more than anybody over there really tells it like it is. He is critical when he has to be complimentary as well, but very critical. And Kipness was again, 1125 here with Rahimi and Grote, but last night on marquee in the post game, he discussed how the brewers had a game plan against Kevin Gossman early in the game. Take a listen to this. I'm not even going to say the pressure got home. They didn't wait for even pressure to get to. They knew something was coming. They're game plan watching all these first inning, second pitch. Next highlights we're going to show all these highlights are the first or second pitch of the bat. They had a clear game plan for this entire going and second in first pitch of the bat.

7:20They knew that he's been throwing his fastball and other teams will too. These scouting reports in the playoffs, they know these been thrown his fastball more. They know that his split is a great pitch and a great secondary in an out pitch. Watch Contras right here. Spurs pitch of the bat. They said we are going to come into this box swinging and swinging early and swinging hard. We're not going to let him get to this change up. They attacked him early. This was a game plan by their offense. Yeah, and an adjustment from the game last week where Gossman was absolutely lights out against the brewers in that 2-1 win, which was a rematch of the pitching match up. We saw last night Logan Henderson, who was again very good last night for five shut out endings for the brewers. And Layla, isn't it just so indicative again of the brewers just having the cubs number outskimming the Chicago cubs if you want? 8:22Well, that's it. I always think of the you-darkish rays, you know, don't question cubs data because it was so sound for so long. But you can't argue with the brewers right now when it comes to the results that they have against this cubs team. I had no faith. None. When I walked into the office yesterday after what I had seen in the first two games that said to me this team wasn't going to sweep. I hated it. I rage quit watching after six to nothing. I had to go back and start watching again when I saw it was it was seven to one at that point. And then we start to see them slightly chip away. Then they get the five run, I think against a reliever at that point who I think the brewers are saying, Oh, that's somebody we can bring in low leverage. And for the cubs are like, well, we had a five run, nine thinning. You know, that's the other part of this is how are they talking about this series versus how the cubs are where we're searching for answers and positives. And meanwhile, they're like, Oh, we got the tie breaker. That's neat. They don't care. They have the best record and baseball.

9:26And they showed you yet again in this season series where it shouldn't have even come down to this much given what happened to the cubs. And I mentioned this before in the previous series I had against Arizona, the road trip with Seattle. Yeah, there are so many opportunities where we can go back and say to ourselves, was this really how this should have gone? Four and nine against the brewers in a series where you wanted to really see your teams shine. And instead it was one of the wins was was against a pitcher who thought he was tipping his pitches and told everybody how and then fix the problem. And then not enough when you needed your team to come out and actually produce. It's just frustrating. And then the the concession attitude that I think is losing your home field advantage now against the feelings, the Phillies. I just I can't get my head around any of it. Yeah, looking at the numbers right now, the cubs are 10 games behind the brewers in the division. If you like to look at such things and they are now a game and a half behind the Philadelphia Phillies for that top wild cards, about the Phillies beat up on Houston last night 11 to 7.

10:36There he was again, Kyle Schwarber, the Swarabino with a grand slam in that game. They will play Philly will play Houston again today and then the good news is well, Philadelphia goes on the road. They're at Atlanta. They do play a struggling Washington team and the Mets all coming up on the road. Should we talk about that night thing a little bit more because five runs were scored and then things kind of halted. Didn't they? The cubs were still threatening in that 9th inning and there you go. Carson Kelly is due to come up to the plate. But no, instead Craig council decides to go with the wide eyed rookie B.J. Murray Jr. at the plate and council talked about that 9th inning last night. Nothing really happened that good for us, but we did put together a very good night thinning and you know one pitch away from getting peed up there. And we got the time run up to the to the plate and one one pitch away from getting peed up with the chance to take the lead.

11:37So down seven going into that inning. That's that's a pretty good inning and we put together some really good at bats. Okay, how many times have we seen guys off the bench or they get the call up whether it was Pedro Ramirez at first or whether it was B.J. Murray or Kevin Alcantra not see any time. You know, they don't get to start. I mean Pedro did eventually, but you don't get to start. You're getting the call up even that shot in certain situations. You don't get the significant consistent at bats, even though they called you up. And then suddenly your number is called in the 9th inning. When the game is on the line. As if that's the best situation to ease in a young hitter. And then because of a split or handedness, theoretical handedness, you're the one up when when Carson Kelly who got the double off of Trevor McGill the night before. On H eight, eight, eight pitch at bat. And this was a seven pitch at bat by B.J. Murray.

12:37But are you putting your young hitters in the best position to succeed there when you're not giving them consistent bats and other spots and then you're like, oh, games on the line. It's going to be up to you, kid. I feel like that situation has repeated itself too many times. Yeah, that's just not the right guy in the spot. I get what he's saying about handedness and all of that kind of stuff, but then and the numbers and the OPS. And he almost hit a devastating home run that could have tilted that entire world series.

13:39I mean, when I saw Jason Kibness for a while, it was very scary. It was like VJ Rajee seeing him very scary still. There was a certain reaction I had to to him, but he can't hurt us now that he's a broadcaster. But he was an excellent baseball player as well. We'll talk to Kibness coming up at 1125 today coming up next right here on Rahimi and Grote, which is taking place from Cody's public house right now in Lakeview. We had the benches clear in the white socks pirates game last night because of Sam Antonacci's collision at second base. We've got to talk about that.
