Wednesday morning. This is your town. This is your station. This is Waitley. The AFL Tribunal has spoken twice. In Lance Collard case, the young saint has been suspended for seven weeks, plus a further two suspended for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Collard is shattered in the saints who pleaded for mercy and argued for a financial sanction rather than a suspension of this morning considering appealing. And in the Zack butters case, the Stan in port skipper was found guilty of using abusive language towards umpire Nick foot. He's been fined $1,500. In career, he's pointed with a result tonight. I stand by knowing what I said and what I didn't say, especially what I didn't say. It's like I thank the club for the support. Port Adelaide is this morning weighing up. It's appeal options, but they can't yet decide given the tribunal findings are yet to lob in their inbox. What was abundantly clear was that

the slight discrepancy between wines and butters hurt Port's case. As did the shift between what butters told Zana McGuire from Channel 7 postgame to what he said yesterday afternoon when cross examined. The story has been divisive. Nick foot was consistent from the outset in his evidence, but butters wavered. There is a difference between knowingly lying and being mistaken. I don't think Zack butters knowingly lied, but there is a chance he got it wrong just as there is a chance that Nick foot got it wrong at the center of all this are two players who believe they've been hard done by the CEO of the players association is James Gallagher and he's with me this morning in the studio James. Good to see. Good to see you Tom. Timing is everything a strongly worded statement this morning. Did the tribunal get it wrong with Zack butters? I think yeah. Yeah, I mean we're really disappointed with the outcome. There's no doubt about that. I think it would seem pretty clear that there's been a misunderstanding here. I know I certainly have misheard many things in my life,

but I think it was pretty clear we're watching the 40 on Sunday night. You know, there was Zack and Ollie were obviously mystified at why 50 Meta penalty you've been paid. Zack obviously didn't interview immediately postgame. He didn't know at that point in time what the allegations were and he was pretty clear about what he'd said and then Zack and Ollie obviously gave that evidence again last night and I hear the point that there was some slight discrepancies but these guys are playing a highly competitive game of football and when it's come out of Zack's mouth he's not thinking anything of it because he knows he hasn't done anything wrong. So I think for a tribunal to find to be to be confident enough to find that all of those things don't point to the fact that the words weren't said. Yeah, really disappointed. Have you spoken to Zack? Yeah, I have. What did he say? I look, we just had a good chat and I think it consistent with he made a very short statement but he's really disappointed and I think unfortunately

the weight of evidence which was in his favour doesn't seem to have carried the day here and and that's concerning. Is he worried that he's been branded a liar? I think anytime a person gives evidence and it's not accepted. That sort of cuts quite deeply. I know Zack well enough, I know Ollie well. These are guys that are really highly revered, true to their word. I don't think anyone's ever doubted that and for the first time that's happened and I don't think that's a good thing for all of us. What about the role between umpires and players? Do you think it's been unhealthy? This last 48 to 72 hours? I don't think it's help but I actually don't think this is necessarily about players be umpires. I don't know Nick foot. I have no reason to doubt that what he said he thought he heard is what he thought he heard. He was focusing on umpiring the game.

Zack and Ollie were focusing on playing it. It's it's entirely understandable that that might be misheard. I think there's no doubt in my mind that that's that's what happened um and those two things can be can be the case and and the tribunal should have been able to say you know what we actually believe both of you but that doesn't get us to a point of um of understanding um and being confident enough to to our powder charge. Um I think ideally what we should see is you know good dialogue between players and umpires. I think that ultimately helps the relationship. They're they're operating um every every week they're out on the field. There's a lot going on. There's a lot of noise. There's a lot of decisions. There's a lot of emotion and energy and I think if that can be humanized and there can be dialogue between players and umpires that's a really good thing and and certainly our view is um you know put the tribunal decision to one side shouldn't have got there. Yeah it should have been dealt with in the aftermath of the game whether that's straight after in the next day it just should have been navigated um uh the the interest of party should

have come together. So given that Nick foot is not allowed to speak to Zack butters after he reports him how can it be navigated in the 24 hours after the game. Oh well that I mean that whether whether he can't speak to him you know on game day um there's ways of means to get around those things they could have been brought together. I understand there was efforts to probably try and do that um I think that should have just been made to happen. So both sides were diametrically opposed and they didn't want to move and they both still believe what they believe their truth to be and that's very hard to come together at that point. It appears to me that the AFL plays associations main concerns are procedural though more broad can you tell us about them? I think with this one um like when I first started in the role almost about six months ago now and it was really evident to me early that um one of the major frustrations of our current playing group was around the um match review tribunal um processes decision making and the like um and I think what we've seen here when you've got two players respective players give evidence

it's not accepted um it does start to make players uncomfortable you know about the um about the tribunal system and we've all got to have confidence in it and that's the most important thing um and I do think you know this decision has um has has impacted on that yeah. What about the the lack of audio and how surprised were you by that? I'm surprised but I'm not a technically expert so you know I take that at face value I actually think for everyone it would have been a lot better if the audio was available so I know there's been some conspiracy theories about that um I think for for both the players the umpire and everyone else involved I think it would have been better if the audio was available um I yeah I'm not going to bind to those necessarily I think it's just um fortunately the the ways of technology sometimes. To what degree are the players lacking confidence in the MRO and tribunal process at the moment? I think um there's a feeling that the deck stacked against them a little bit and um and that again it's it's not good that that that exists um certainly

had some conversations with the AFL uh around the MRO tribunal processes um through the offseason and uh and I think we've reflected in the statement this morning that you know we said we'd watch it closely and you know this is an example where again you know it it doesn't sit comfortably from a player's perspective so we need everyone to have real confidence in that process um uh we need the players to you know the the tribunal has a role to play um players we'll cross the line and do need to be sanctioned so this is not about how anytime a player's in trouble you know we just blindly um back them in I think what this is about is we're going to have confidence in that process and and the players have to have confidence in that process and I just think that has been challenged at times in recent times I think the tribunal has been used more than it should be yeah I think sometimes a free kick and a 50 meter penalty are the right approach the like um transgressing against the rules of the game can be dealt with in the game sometimes I think occasionally in recent years um there has been a rush to use the MRO and tribunal and the players feel that you'd be

aware that um cynics from the AFL and also clubland would sometimes believe that the players' association in many ways is agitating for the sake of agitating uh how do you get through this and how do you make an impact so that the league listens to you and the players are heard on these concerns yeah well I think it's um unfortunately for um for Zach in this case it's about using these examples and trying to shine a light on why that raises concerns and um and then for us I mean the the main way of navigating changes through uh collective bargaining agreement and we're about to um probably get started on that again later this year um you know and and right now it feels like you know the um this whole process and and system is a is a priority as part of that conversation now we'll see what we get to and we get to work through that with all the players but that you know that's the that's the main lever but but I'd like to think the the AFL has a has a real understanding um that the players have got that they're the the most important stakeholder in a game they've got a vested interest in the game it's health and its growth and I think they know that

we bring that to those conversations I'd like to think that um uh you know I don't necessarily want to be here agitating for change this morning I'd much prefer to be really confident in the system yeah um and uh you know and and and I have players that um that have that same view we're talking to AFL players association uh CEO James Gallagher who's only fairly new to the role it must be said he's been in football for a long time though we're to North Melbourne we're to the PA before that and plenty of other issues discussed as well we'll get to Lance Collard I want to ask you about salary cap the trade the mid season trade period possibility um and gather around the future of that as well are you concerned though on this Zach butters incident in particular that uh interviews post game will become um less available for broadcasters because butters was honest in his view um and then his story changed slightly and players in the future even after losses might be less willing to do so um yes and how much of a concern is that for the game yeah so one of the one of the things I did in in my first few months was I in sitting down with the players I started

to talk to them about what role do we have in growing the game it's it's really important we're partners in the game through the CBA it's really important for the players to play a role in the continued growth of the game so I asked that question and um and one of the things that was really strongly put forward by the players we want to give more of ourselves we're actually really happy to to show a little bit more of our personality to give a bit more perspective on the game um post game interviews particularly when you're in a losing team are one of those opportunities um the writer on that the major concern with that is when we do that there are examples where it's used against us um and and whether that's in the the broader media scrutiny or whether that's unfortunately now in this case I thought it was really surprising um that I think from a broader game perspective that that was used against our class night I don't think it's helpful because what we all want I think is for players to give more of themselves to grow the game and they're up for it but when we have incidents like this they second guess it and that's that's not good for any of us and it's certainly not good for the AFL as well um and that's a conversation we'll definitely

be having in coming days yeah so what does a competition look like where the players lose confidence in the media and the reporting around delicate incidents and then lose confidence in the tribunal and MRO process well it's it's not one that's um you know really built for success right and so I think it's it's incumbent upon all of us to make sure that we we get through those challenges and and and generally the relationship between the players and and the media the players and the and the game has been fantastic um we've got an issue here that we need to to work through and resolve I've got no doubt there is a solution that we can we can all um you know work towards um but there's got to be an appetite to do it you call Andrew Gillan today and and make these thoughts known to him in a more casual maybe personal way we talk regularly um whether that's today um I think I'm seeing him tomorrow so yeah um but yeah and we'll certainly have conversation about it um and I I think these are not necessarily thoughts that haven't come up in our discussions previously I think um we've just seen them play out in the last 24 hours or so you've got a legal

background as your advice to Zach butters and Port Adelaide to appeal I'm trying desperately to continually take the legal hat off um I looked out they'll consider it's hard without having seen the reasons and um and our team and our legal team I spoke to um both Zach and and Matthew Richardson last night and I made it really clear that they're going to have great legal support but if there's anything our team can do to help them we will and I expect our our guys will have a look at the look at the the reasons today and and form some thoughts and if they've got some ideas about you know a way through on appeal um we'll certainly play that role should a tribunal member beyond the the the tribunal call while he's driving and making a determination that has significant impact on someone's life I think we're a really professional game and we need to make sure that every element of that reflects it so that's a no uh the the last question I have on this regarding Zach butters is he surprised that it's taken this long to get the findings back from the tribunal we still don't have them and it's 9, 17 am the next morning yeah I think

ideally we'd have the the reasons pretty shortly after um I expect I actually don't know this but I know from my previous time at North Melbourne um quite often the AFL will be relatively flexible in the consideration of those decisions and the timelines for appeal I'd like to think that given there's a delay on the reasons that that would play out here um yeah I ideally we get the the reasons quickly but as long as it doesn't have a negative impact on the rights of the player I think we can work with that and last one on this story so um you're the plays association boss but Rob Kerr is the umpires association boss do you speak to him about the the dynamic in this situation? Yeah I haven't as yet um but I'll certainly reach out and have a conversation um and I think it comes back to ultimately what we wanted I touched on earlier um plays and umpires are working together every week and um and they're not always going to agree um and how do we create that environment where there's you know there's a really healthy respect and um I expect that that's largely what we've got um but we just need to make sure that we we aren't taking steps

or putting things in place that potentially get in the way of that. We'll be taking your calls after the news on this on the lands collared situation anything else you want to put it on the agenda this morning please do so uh one three hundred seven three six seven three six is the hunt Hyundai open line enjoy early deals at Hyundai pre-o fees on now at participating Hyundai dealers in the 40 wings temper tax is zero four three three ninety eight eleven sixteen the difference is temperate you'll listen to waitly for Australian made when you buy certified Australian made your backing local businesses jobs and our economy right here James Gallagher from the PAs in this studio plenty more to talk about including the lands collared verdict which was handed down yesterday once I have your say ring Jared on one three hundred seven three six seven three six now back to waitly tom morris filling in for Jared waitly yesterday today and tomorrow and two red hot issues in the football industry right now uh the punishments handed to Zach butters who's caught a fifteen hundred dollar fine as poor Adelaide uh potentially appeal that we'll find out maybe later this morning certainly by this afternoon and lands collared we knew last week

that he was guilty of using a homophobic slur in a VFL match three weeks ago uh and then yesterday it was confirmed that he had received a nine week suspension from playing football two of those weeks suspended for the twenty twenty six and twenty seven seasons meaning that he will not miss anything more than seven weeks unless he offends again uh both players protested their innocence and in both cases their tribunal uh suggested that they were guilty and then have handed down their verdicts were talking to AFL players association boss James Gallagher who's been very generous with his time the lands collared verdict we've separated these two because even though they've come within an hour or two of each other they are very different cases how do you read what's played out with lands collared and st. kilter and the franksend dolphins yeah you you're right tom that they're very different um i think there's no doubt from our point of you you know we've been really clear that um the game we need to read the game homophobia it's as simple as that um and we've made some commitments around equality inclusion and safety in the most

recent cba we've really started to um to break through with some of that work with the afl and establishing that committee in in recent times we're we're completely committed to that and there's you know i just want that to be um to be very clear um but what we've seen again is a process that ultimately has um caused harm all over the place um i don't think we've got a process in place at the moment that's bespoke the the game in the in the nineties found a way to deal with racism on field between players um it it established a a really deeply considered consultative engaging process that made sure that those people affected the players affected but also more broadly the communities that might be affected by the allocations or the all the language used um would be heard as part of the process and i think you know that that's something that um we're really keen to to see adopted here i think there's an opportunity for us um to uh to enhance the way

we navigate these really challenging situations. Lance clearly um you know he's he's maintained his innocence um there's obviously country evidence to that um however like it's disappointing that his his um his perspective hasn't been adopted by the tribunal um however um it's it's actually more about how we're addressing holistically these challenges as opposed to just getting to the end and the and the disciplining and the such yeah so there's broader issues here but it's just a a couple of quick ones on Lance collard and the tribunal spoke about his uh disordered difficult upbringing you know the the notion of or the reality of um domestic violence in a home front um no male role model in his life um he's had to travel from where he grew up to play for St Kilda he's now living with the Si Wanganian Milera how difficult his life has been compared to let's say the two VFL players that made the allegations um against him uh have you spoken to Lance and um and how's he going yeah um i i haven't spoken directly i've reached out to Lance um and and i know

the team's had some correspondence with him um previously we've been um talking a lot to the club and and people around him um you know he might understand he is he's you know um whether devastates too strong work like he's deeply impacted obviously by this outcome um and and given he's um he's gone gone back to wadis when some time with family i haven't been able to have a chat to him yet um but um yeah so i think uh we've we've got an adversarial approach and it's i think the tribunal in um in its decisions last night identified that when you've got two versions of events it's not a great place to start from when dealing with really challenging issues that the game is facing um whether that be homophobia or racism or otherwise and and i think that adversarial approach um hasn't served the purposes of um anyone in this process i don't think it served the purposes of the lgbtiqa plus community i don't think it served the purposes of

of Lance um and that's ultimately what we're focused on moving forward so what is the right punishment for lack of a better term or sanction for a player found guilty of using a homophobic slur if it's not several weeks on the sidelines i i don't necessarily have a strong view on what the sanction should be i think what we've got to do is have a process that brings in the views of the communities we're talking about that are impacted and and get them to have a say in how we ultimately land at an outcome and um you know there there was some evidence given as part of Lance's hearing last week um by Hayley Conway from Pride Cup and i think it was really apt and kind of got to the heart of the issue is that sanctioning and penalty can't be their only response you know that it has a role to play but at the moment it's kind of being seen as the solution and it's not the solution has to start much earlier that's worked that we're really deeply committed to we're looking forward to working closely with the AFL to develop that

i think what we've seen here is another unfortunate example where you know this where it needs to be done and we need to quickly how concerned are you that Lance Collard either won't be able to get back to his best as a football or won't be able to get back at all from this because that was mentioned in the tribunal notes that this could be career ending was the quote um if the punishment of the sanction is too long um any significant time out of the game presents a challenge for players and we say that all the time whether that be suspension injury or otherwise St Cielder provided great support to Lance um and i think that needs to to be acknowledged um that gives me a lot of confidence that that um you know when he's when he's ready he'll come back to that football club he'll have a lot of support around him and that'll give him the best chance to um to move through this incident out the other side and you know and hopefully um return to 40 should the AFL adopt a framework that's consistent across various off-field misdemeanors i know you touched on it before and i know this was part of the negotiations

and written and agreed to in 2023 and it hasn't come forth yet i think we've got a bit of work to do and we've talked about a lot this morning yeah um the listeners have heard lots about process this morning yeah yeah i think we've got a lot of work to do to set up you know really bespoke processes that should lead us to the outcome i think having some clarity about what those outcomes might look like is helpful for the game i think we saw that through covid um that when there was really clear parameters around play behaviour but also the consequence of behaviour i think that was really helpful for the game and then that we were able to get through issues and incidents quickly um with clarity for everyone involved and um and people had signed up before the the issue was upon us i think there's a benefit to that and that's something we're we're committed to continuing working through with the afl and um you know i'd like to think we can find a way through that but i don't think you can have necessarily something that's so prescriptive as you know this equals x yeah but i think having an understanding of um of the parameters you're working in it would be really helpful for everyone the afl made the argument

in the case against lands collard that uh because he had um delivered a homophobic slur before he was more likely to have done it this time do you think that was a fair argument? that's a good good question um i think the evidence as i understand it was very much that he'd gone through an education process he understood the mistake of his ways um yeah yeah i mean you could argue that the the word has been in his vocabulary at some point in the past you could equally argue that he more than most should deeply know the impact of it given what he's gone through yeah yeah so again i said this before when we're talking about um the zack butters case you are the p-a-c-o so you are clearly um you have a lens from a player's perspective so you would agree i think the lands collard needs to take ownership for his own mistakes in the past but watch your message to the lgbtqa plus community that has also been hurt by what's happened not just here but also in the past with collard and other players yeah community of which we've got a lot of our members are part of that community um and

and that's why we have such a commitment to inclusion it's why we have such a commitment to the the voices of that community being heard when these incidents arise and um we know having heard from representatives of that community that's really important um we want the game to be as inclusive and safe for everyone full stop and um we think at the moment we've got some work to do and um we're really committed to doing that work because ultimately the game will be better off when everyone irrespective of communities but in particular the lgbtqa plus community feels comfortable and confident enough to come and be themselves and participate and perform and contribute to this game and i think um that's really important to us and as i said we've we've we've got plenty of members from that community like it's it's um it's right at the core and and that's why these issues are so challenging to navigate they're they are really tricky um to work through for everyone involved um and we recognize and acknowledge that challenge we're just saying um

let's let's deal with it in a slightly less adversarial way and make sure we're hearing from all the right people last one on this should some kiel to repeal the lands collard suspension they're considering it um and and our team again our lawyers have been doing a bit of work in recent times they they've worked closely um we've sent kiel to team in the last few weeks and i expect that um they'll all be sitting there and and having a look at the the reasons today and um and they'll consider their their options in that regard um and and our team will play role in in helping identify any possible options they may have james if you can stick around for a couple more minutes we've got some lighter topics to talk to you about salary caps and gather around midseason trade period uh and a couple more things as well if you want to be part of the conversation we're going to take your calls after that on one three hundred seven three six seven three six that's the he and a open line the new macafe drinks range time now for the latest news headlines with Nathan Gardner thank you Nathan tom morris here for jared lately yesterday today and tomorrow we're here for Australian made when you buy certified Australian made you're backing local businesses jobs and our economy right here just a couple more minutes with

james galega the afl players association c o uh what is your perspective on gathering and the future of uh what it's and the future of it and what it's become it's been a fantastic initiative there's no doubt about that um the players really enjoy it um i was lucky enough that i spent all of last week over there i went to went to a bit of footy spoke to a lot of players really positively received i think south astralis done a wonderful job under the cba there any extension you know we we need to be comfortable with and agree with and Andrew Dylan and i met last week um made it you know um i think we got to a point where there was a broad understanding of what that would look like um this probably still some some details to work through as they work through with the government but you know we're certainly supportive of it i don't i don't see us being anything other than um yeah helping bring it to life into the future years and you know i'd probably expect that that that becomes south australia into the future but we'll work with the afl that's ultimately they're cool the mid season trade period has been on the cards

for many years probably four or five years now and it's been written in that you've been opened and negotiating it and seeing if it can work but it still is not a thing despite support from some clubs why is that it's a good question it hasn't actually come up for me since i've started i know we've we've opened the door to it in the last cba that was a fair while ago now i think broadly more player movements a good thing for the game so we're certainly open to that conversation you know some clubs have some concerns about whether it would equally apply for all eight ten clubs i think there's ways to to navigate those concerns but that the balls in the afl's court and if they want to be sure we're we're certainly up for working through the detail of that with them a question on the salary cap do you think the best players in footy are being paid enough for the top end the superstars yeah i mean our job is to negotiate the cap and the minimum salary and then it's over the clubs to work their way through that in between i think what we've seen is some significant increases in in payments in recent times because the cap's gone up

probably want to see that continue to go go forward the other thing at the moment i think we're saying is you know i think more more movement ultimately um probably leads to you know a good balance in in where the money is being spent um and so i think there's an opportunity maybe to have um to have a bit more flexibility and freedom of movement and and that will necessarily balance out in the money spent is there a world where uh player contracts are capped at a certain number of years don't think so Tom ever i just can't i i play as a really restricted and and i hear um some concerns i don't see it as a problem i i know again i'll go back to my time at north melvin and i'm probably giving way too much of their stuff but like they've got luke davis uniaq niqlaki harry she's all all locked in long term there there's no problem with those long term contracts like more often than not they're a real positive for both player and club there's the occasional outlier where they don't quite work that's not like we shouldn't be making changes to the rules just because of a couple of outlier situations that don't work overly well and the other thing that the longer contracts do is they provide a really important safety net

for players that are putting themselves at physical risk every week and it's actually the best and i know there's been a lot of conversation recent times about insurance and support in the light the best support players have is that certain due of contract the upcoming collective bargaining agreement is going to be fascinating uh what's your number one uh point on your wish list what would you like the afel to listen to your most on when it comes to the upcoming cba we haven't worked through our priorities yet i've just got around to all the afl clubs and i'll do the same with the afl to w clubs shortly um having caught up with them just after i started but we'll go again in the next six weeks um and i think by late this year we want to be in a position we're really clear on our priorities but overarchingly the the players are partners in the game they're invested in the growth of the game and i think making sure that we're continually having aced at that table because we come armed with really um clear views about how we can keep helping to grow the game and i think that's the most important thing and that should be the philosophy that um overarches this next agreement um and hopefully the dynamic between us and the afl

ongoing and the clubs are you a fan of the the double headers um across afl w and afl that are coming in august we've been pushing for it really strongly for some time that predates me um i certainly was pushing for him when i was at north Melbourne as well i think it's a a fantastic opportunity to explore how this can help the growth of the game broadly um and and introduce a football audience to send fantastic afl w footy and at the moment that's one of the the the bridges we've got to get across so um thrilled the afl's heard the players wishes on that looking forward to um the the four of those that we'll see this season and potentially hoping they're really successful and we can look to expand that further james really appreciate you coming in some heavy topics but uh you've been terrific throughout and uh and we'll speak to you again soon thanks don't choose james gallagher the afl players association cio have you all say give us a buzz one three hundred seven three six seven three six enjoy early deals at heanday preo fees on now uh participating hunt heanday dealers waitly on s here tom morris filling in for jared waitly we've got some time to take some calls now in

fact we're going to go through the ten o'clock news and and take some calls after that as well on the zak butters case the lands collard case anything else from the chat with afl players association boss james gallagher which we've just wrapped up you can catch up on that on the podcast as soon as it goes up this is waitly for australian made when you buy certified australian made you're backing local businesses jobs and our economy right here the heanday open line was blowing up ross out the back has his hands full if you have something to say please by all means to give us a buzz one three hundred seven three six seven three six let's go to michael in pressed and to get things going morning michael yeah tom look it's just amazing with lance collard case in a court of law no one knows about your prize or previous convictions before you get sentenced so what chance did lance have whether he's right or wrong whether he did say it or not everybody already knew that he had a prior regarding the homophobic spirit yeah appreciate your call michael it was part of the the argument from the afl and we did

ask james gallagher about that a few moments ago as well oh let's go to thank you for the call let's go to jaden and caram down do you want to talk about zack butters get a jaden okay tell me how you go on well thanks yeah i'm the only three things quickly touch on um yeah i work with an official that was doing that game on sunday and he categorically says that um that but it's a hundred percent said what nick was saying not that it's any news that's also what's been said you know that yeah again did he did he hear it jaden sorry did he hear it or did he just say that because nick foot was categoric on it no yeah i think he's just because nick was categoric but they obviously spoke big um you know immediately after so yeah um second thing is with our audio the audio is only there for them to communicate to each other so it's only like a mic to pick up their own voice so sometimes you're able to get a little uh a little bit of outside noise but in that incident it's not designed for that so that's why we didn't pick it up um and the third

thing was uh did you end up you know the um the last nine and three sixty where uh raise raise brought up that an um uh do you know come up to them uh during the game uh yes that's something that i've been uh discussing with people behind the scenes this morning we'll we'll play that soon so stay tuned jaden we'll get to that audio in a few minutes time and then and then we'll discuss that appreciate you call three very valid points let's go to james in q morning james my name come um look i just found a very interesting how um you both think that the collard case and the buddhist case is different vastly different when you've got in both cases you've got two against one yep in one case they believe the two against the one and he copped his fair whack he got the full whack of the nine weeks in the other case they believe the one over the two and he got a slap on the fingers yeah if he's got a fairer guilty he's got to get given his fair whack and i'm not i'm not i'm probably more of an unpowered bastard like everybody else as much as football

but all we've been concerned about is uh nick buttas what about uh foots um he's he's name's been dragged right now to two so you know where's it concerned for him that's a valid point with foot and i have asked rob ker who's the uh afl umpires association boss to come on for a chat he hasn't got back to me yet but hopefully we can get him on today or tomorrow i said yes today james on air that i know nick foot uh personally uh and i really like nick foot and i really trust nick foot i think he's a good man and i think he's a hugely successful umpire as well he's invited grand final 270 games you could argue is in the best two or three umpires in the sport not just in terms of decision making but also he's manner with the players so i trust nick foot but i also know um people who know zak butters really well i've never met him personally myself and i'm entirely inclined to think that zak butters believes he's telling the truth as well so um i i i think there's there's a middle ground here there's a nuance where you don't have to be against either party you can actually support both parties if you the afl and reach a conclusion in the end

they've gone with the umpires word over the two players words and you're right there are similarities between the collard case and the butters case absolutely there are the two v one component um is is is is interesting the fact that it's both going to the to the tribunal um is interesting as well but i i guess the the biggest difference and the discrepancy that i was referring to before with James Gallagher is that one is umpire abuse or alleged umpire abuse the other is a is a homophobic slur from uh a first nations uh man that has uh that has uh that has transgressed in the same way before and and i think the latter is far more delicate and far more um concerning because of the community that uh is around that and the lgbti qa plus community um that uh that is clearly impacted by those sorts of words so as much as i as i feel for the umpires in this situation i feel for butters and port adelaide i i feel for that community far more because i think it's far more wide-ranging it's less about the football and more about uh

language and our society but i hear your point there are similarities in both thank you James for your call uh some text messages coming through the butters case will be thrown out straight away on appeal just on the basis of legal process let alone the flimsy evidence how can a juror leave the proceedings during closing arguments and reconnect while driving a car a clown show it was uh particularly short on that answer wasn't he James Gallagher morning time you need to get the umpires point of view the players are not angels they did not tend to forget what they say andrew from bendigo we are trying to get uh Rob Kerron hopefully you can come on at some stage in the next couple of days we'll continue to take your calls after the break waitly for Australian made when you buy certified Australian made your backing local businesses jobs in our economy right here once i have your say ring jerry on 1300 736 736 now back to waitly plenty of text messages coming through really appreciate your correspondence and from all sides of the argument as well and made uh in a really intelligent and um and thoughtful way so please keep in coming in on 043 398 1116 the 40 wings temper tax the difference

is temper find your personalized bedtime solution with our friendly neighborhood sleep advisors 40 wings serious about sleep just a reminder the Hyundai open line is 1300 736 736 if you ever thought on Zack butters if you ever thought on lands collard now's the time give us a buzz it's news time this is your town this is your station this is waitly if you're just joining us tom morris tom morris filling in for Jared waitly but joining us earlier was James Gallagher the CEO of the AFL plays association you can catch up with that extended chat regarding collard butters and many other football issues towards the very end on your podcast app i urge you to have a listen because he covered it really well i thought even if you don't agree with everything the players association is saying or doing you can't argue that they've got the best interest of the players at hard and of course the players are super important for the for the future of the game and the sport

and making sure AFL football is as entertaining as possible for as long as possible you're listening to waitly for Australian made when you buy certified Australian made your backing local businesses jobs and our economy right here we've got brats and erasing like new ball partner coming up in about half an hour's time Chris coals is going to join us from england he's going to talk about english premier lady i might have an ask him about rexam as well uh bit happening at the western bulldogs today as well uh harry as in prince harry is at the western bulldogs sentence i thought i never say is there for a charity event for november we're just uh trying to work out exactly what's going on and uh whether we can be part of it as well that's all for the new a cafe drinks range but just for the next little bit really keen to touch base with the waitly listenership and get your thoughts on uh the lance collard case the zack butters case and what james galagher said earlier so gives a buzz on one three hundred seven three six seven three six the hunday open line let's go to paul in balarat paul morning to you good morning tom good to speak with you you too um first of all as well put for afl is an extremely powerful entity and the different makes in so many areas

are people lives in this country amongst others um is really empowering so i think afl as a whole but the work they do in so many areas is really critical for how a lot of us live alive um and second point most importantly um tom i want to talk about lance now i'm really strong about this i'm a gay master of male um my father is extremely masculine male three of his children turn out to be gay men out of four god knows but he would have thought back to no so um and i think what's happening with lance is i don't think this is productive or constructive for him and actually that's the fact that my it's like a punishment what's going on for him he may be another one i don't know how lance it's thinking and i'm not lance but um taking away that possibly the one thing that he learns playing the game of afl football where for some footballers that football field in a sense of peace says he take way of getting away from other issues in their

life and for him taking that taking that away i'm not saying what he's done is right by any in unity or any right or wrong about but i think we need to be more constructive and productive with how we look at these these top of issues so maybe for lance's his environment his culture of how he's brought up is where he's at his own point today so i think maybe looking at um setting out not so much community service look as i can see it's seen as a punishment and a dilemma to him but maybe a link with um the gay community and some gay masculine males and having open his eyes i'm saying well guess what there are other gay masculine males out there just like just just just as much of the you are who happen to be gay and maybe linking within and open his eyes i'm set up a program with him over a period of time and others and i think that's the way we need to go um yeah not not pain not pain because we're i do we just don't isolate him and that's that's that's that's that's destructive for him yeah poor i really

appreciate your thoughts and um and and how consider they are um so that might work for lance collider might work for any player that's that's in the situation in the future i hope that there's not but if it does happen again um do you think the afl and the competition as a whole needs to worry or have a and i towards the optics uh setting an example for others do you think that is a consideration when handing down a sanction to players who have now offended more than once i don't i don't so i think when someone's sanctioned being sanctioned the third time we need to look at that and cut it right there so then we stop at the happening of second time so what's happened between lance and the outcome of what they are for um look i'm not saying they have all wrong as i said there's no wrong or right so they look from maybe from their point of view and i'm not going to put words in there they may look at the point point of view they need they have to be seen to be doing something about this that we can't accept this in the game but i'm not sure first time punishment date was given that hasn't been productive for him for food so it's

allowed this to happen a second time so i think they felt me to look at uh a program look at a model that we can work with players similar to himself or any any afl player that comes out with a destructive demeanor um mindset that comes out on the field and look at it as a whole look at you know and i don't obviously need to play it is different um and and just to get away of we can empower them to uh guide them support them encourage them help them to be more aware and open their eyes up i appreciate we yeah no no paul i really put i didn't mean to cut you off i really appreciate you call and again how considered it was i know um when uh i was sacked at fox for uh yeah more than four years ago now um tango hosh from the afl um actually set me up with a number of different programs that you speak of and i just wonder whether those programs have been available to lance collard and others who've been in the same situations and um and they were hugely beneficial to me they weren't just a module where you go on for 45 minutes and

tick a few multiple choice boxes it took it took me literally hundreds hundreds of hours to to go through it and um and learn and educate myself on where i went wrong and i just hope lance collard has the same um the same things available to him paul appreciate your call thanks for jumping on let's go to albert in aston and albert welcome to the show hi tom just quickly if i make a few points um firstly the umpire had no way of knowing the audio device he was wearing didn't capture what butters said he's acted thinking that possibly there's a chance that it has been recorded so i believe that the umpire uh heard it and i believe the butters said it now i say say that not likely but isn't butters one of the most find plays in the competition at the moment and i'll be reading to suggest therefore that he can't control his emotions or his anger in the heat of battle on the field and this is just another example of that having said that i do believe the tribunal have acted inappropriately and given what we know i don't believe how they can put more weight in the testimony of an umpire than the testimony of a player i think they should have in

the absence of any evidence just warned both parties and and moved on from there but i i do believe and i can't believe i'm saying it that butters said it and the umpires were correct in this instance i think that's a pretty balanced take Albert appreciate you jumping on let's go to Adrian in sath maraing welcome Adrian hey you know and Tommy well thanks how are you yeah very well yeah just want to wait on the butters uh situation is the tribunal like isn't it like a court of law where it's sort of innocent until proven guilty because of the evidence unless unless there was other evidence that you know it wasn't broadcast to the public you know i tried to slow down the fox footy uh snippet and the channel seven snippet on you know instagram and i tried to slide down i'm like a muter and i just could it i could have make out anything that was said because their ground noise i would look at so i don't know if there's another snippet that we the public the fans haven't heard but i thought if you know if you're not proven guilty or innocent if that makes sense yeah and i hear you Adrian i think

with these ones in a barrister actually texted in yesterday in the absence of evidence often the tribunal or juries can make can make assessments on the balance of probability and they they clearly felt as if uh in this case the nickfoot's story or nickfoot's truth and reality was more convincing than that of zack butters and olie wine and you can make your own assessment about that appreciate you jumping on Adrian thanks for that let's go to mat on the gold coast mat welcome to the show welcome hey yay well thanks how are you good thank you again now i think the fairly gets lost in this is uh just prior to that that decision and what happened was i was as a poor elephant i was just really questioning the discipline of the port players or at least the you know sometimes you can have a 15-minute gameplay between a decision that an empire makes that's a contrary to another decision by another empire on the ground but when decisions at one end of the ground within two three minutes uh favoring just one side in particular and the locals are getting really really restless and you know it was really frustrating because if you even think

about that decision where jordan suede is not has not been holding uh then i'm sorry the number 10 player for a prosecutor for his name now but he he gets a free kick and that's the that's one of like numerous this poor decisions and it's where you know the obviously there's got to be some level accountability to the performance from the umpires and that's they they they had that already um and i just think maybe maybe nick was probably also a bit defensive and and uh it was aware that there was some poor judgment poor decisions and exactly he could have actually said something that was not to about payment but nick's immediately defensive understanding where of the heightened situation and and how you know that's why why would nick be so defensive immediately to think that better said that even if he didn't yeah that that is a thread that's coming through quite a bit on the text message of machine mat you're not the only one to bring that up i appreciate you giving us a call and uh i hope the goalcoast is uh is lovely today a bit jealous of the weather up there let's go to dacie and ashburton dacie good day

do they're dacie a time of yomi yes gotcha i don't want to talk about nick footbang soft or an overreaction this week i'll find a quite uh hot hypocritical from zackbutters to pay the man that's going to be paid 20 million over the next 10 years essentially crying on the news over a 15 hundred dollar fine yeah so i don't think it's about the the monetary value i don't think he really cares whether it's fifteen hundred dollars or five hundred dollars i think zackbutters cares about the reputational damage that he perceives would be uh on his back now that this um this this sanction has been handed down do you see that i don't think there's been any reputation damage to butters i think everyone's essentially supported him and nick footbang made the enemy look look i i agree with you that the reputational damage to zackbutters is negligible look at i think it's minimal i made the point to cain last night on locked in that leham ryan got fine fifteen hundred dollars for umpire

last year and no one remembers that daisy tomas got fine seven thousand five hundred dollars in 2019 for calling uh abandrum pire and effing cheat um and no one looks at daisy tomas and goes g's what a terrible bloke he is because he did this to an umpire seven years ago i think if you are a activist if you do it a number of times then you are at risk of reputational damage but i think the reputational damage for zackbutters has actually been overblown i i get why he's pushing back but i also don't think it's going to affect him one i owe to going forward um i think what we'll potentially affect him and put out ladies if and when nick foot does the next port power game all the put out late game i think that will be an interesting moment in time i i think you made some saline points darcy appreciate you call let's go to jack on the road get a jack time a lot of people are missing the point here now let's go back to the rockman who the discretion was all about look at he's demeanor whilst talking to nick explaining to him he was confused more than zackbutters about why the freak it was given against him and that was never

taken into account secondly zackbutters was so close to the umpire is that an explanation why it wasn't recorded thirdly until umpires become fully professional 100% and not have conflict of interest possibly conflict of interest for someone who is part of the sports bet team i cannot believe that nick i know he's on racing.com he's a good commentator bet to be an ambassador for sports bet is completely wrong iafl should be making all umpires completely 100% professional and have that job jack appreciate you call i think the the pushback from umpires is they believe this is their view that they actually better umpires because they're not fully professional they get a chance to switch off rather than think about what's a hole in the ball what's a push in the

back what's an insufficient intent all day i see both points i think it would make some sense for some umpires to be fully professional but i'm not sure it's actually financially feasible to make every single field umpire financially full time which i it has been a point for a while now and so far the umpires have pushed back on that uh okay jack appreciate you call thanks for jumping on uh let's have a listen to what razor ray chamberlain said last night at aafl 360 regarding uh player abuse on the field i had one more recently bliss before the end of my career a player made a comment that was in a similar vein about whether i was wearing an opposition jumper under my shirt right i asked him were you talking to me often in that set of circumstances that's enough because the player will go i've made my point but i'll pull up and he's given me an out and that'll look after itself um on this particular occasion the player thought he doubled down so he goes well what am i talking to um so i was really aggrieved to buy that actually because i'd given him the opportunity and he didn't want to take it i chose to take action

after the game it got resolved off field you and him got together or was there was communication right and and collaboration and mediation and and the ecology uh we we we came to an agreement that we understood we're one another stood on it and we've been kosher ever since i do like razor ray chamberlain on all platforms and he speaks some sense there as he self does uh some weather for city power melbourne's weather possible shout atop of 20 city power working in all conditions to keep your power connected essential as we'll keep this conversation going but at sunda rason is not far away my new ball partner he's in adelaide right now and there of course uh keen to have an ipl game at adelaide overlays early is next march it'll be followed by chris coles and then i'm actually watching fox sports news at the moment i'm seeing david zeta who's at esonan but beforehand at the western bulldogs there was prince harry holding onto a footy just the bizarre things that happen in melbourne's sporting landscape at the moment you'll listen to waitley for pay.com today you pay your business expenses with pay.com today you earn points and start getting rewarded today waitley on scn yeah brad's been amazing i think um he's really

been the beacon of of hope and optimism for our group um it can be really hard kind of preaching our same message over and over again when results aren't going your way but um brad has been unwavering in his approach he's full belief in us um we have believed in what we're doing all the way through it and through the really hard moments around that port adelaide game where the road out seemed difficult um but brad's been a beacon of inspiration and um he's kept his coaching philosophy is really simple he's inspired us to do our jobs on the weekend and um really happy for him that we were able to show some evidence on the weekend that we're definitely heading in the fantastic interview from gary line and tim Watson this morning on scn breakfast with escn captain andram agrar encourage everyone to jump on the scn breakfast podcast up and have a listen to that uh really open um really forthright in his views and uh and quite positive as well he attended 24 center bounces against melbourne andram agrar a roll shift um didn't get a lot of the ball but he certainly played a bigger role more in a defensive way uh just a tweet on reading

from oan lennard and we'll get the audio and play it soon from brad scott he's not far away but the s and and coach says he's waiting for an explanation as to how you can take one person's word over another it's totally beyond me regarding the zack butters case over rarely do you hear an afl coach make a comment about a tribunal hearing that has nothing to do with them but brad's got obviously felt compelled this morning to do so so we'll listen to him a little bit later on great interview on agenda set his last night with uh caro and kane and hoggy and daisy and jack ginevan who was the special guest and uh he spoke about his self belief and mindset changed over the last couple of years everything's um yeah falling into place nicely with football um off-field staff for relationship so yeah it's been a great start to 2026 um yeah just happy man i think the belief in myself that i can be a great footballer um i think probably in the past i thought that i could just be a good footballer and just kick goals say forward but i really believe that i can leave a legacy at Hawthorne and be a great player so yeah that's been a big mindset change

we'll hear a bit more from jack ginevan a little bit later on lucky niels also been asked about his future i'm looking forward to that uh the mccaffay new drinks range time now for the latest news headlines with Nathan Gardner Tom Morris filling in for Jared Wightley he'll be back next week uh just a just a text message coming through on brad scott Tommy that's just brad scott trying to get in zack but it's good books for later in the year when the bombers try and poach him not a bad move from brad i like that perspective from four four seven thanks for uh sending your text in that's the 40 wings temperate zero four three three nine eight eleven sixteen this man doesn't know this but a hero of mine uh going through university and growing up on the radio airwaves was mark fine fine his final final siren was appointment listening it still is and he's called in finally welcome to wightley what an honor it is to speak to you get a ton you should have been focusing on your studies not listening to my my rubbish well there's funnily enough the two went hand in hand when i was studying sports journalism and you're on the radio i was able to do both well it's all worked out perfectly because you're a great sports

care no thank you mate now thank you now what have you got for us on the zack butters uh point okay that's that's the um compliment now comes a little bit of a whack yeah full disclosure i actually umpire i'm umpiring in the amos this year on us doing doing be great reserves and i love it and i'll listen to your but listening with real interest this morning love your analysis certainly of zack dutters and where he stands on it in terms of his legacy couldn't agree more but i do expect exception and cancels went down this track with the success with the suggestion that there may be some issues with nick foot umpiring port adelaide games for the rest of the season that really questions the integrity of an umpire yeah so he would so he would go into he would go into any game completely impartial and decision by decision make his best and most honest call yeah i agree i agree with you on that i'm actually neither one way or another i was more referring to like would it be an issue and i think i asked

the question to james galiga um i have no issue with james with uh nick foot and his ability to make you know fair decisions in those games i don't think that is in question um knowing the man myself and also understanding is one of the best umpires in the game my issue is more the media circus that would be around it there's eight other games of the weekend is it is it worth it for the afl to do that i personally think they need to sort of be on the front hey this this will sound funny they need to be on the front foot and be completely impartial and not just impartial but do their appointments as they normally would if the rotation has nick doing the port adelaide game nick does a port adelaide game and we all move on because it'll only be one game later that we realize that nick foot is a very good umpire and we'll be umpiring regardless of the jumper the same way no matter which of the nine games the umpires finally i love it last

question for me to you have you ever copped any umpire abuse like this oh yeah and i and i can tell you i'm quite liberal in allowing players to have their say blow off steam but once and i remember it clearly somebody turned around and said you're a cheat and that ram calls that is absolutely that that's the vilification of an umpire and it was a 50 meter penalty and really if i wasn't on radio at the time and had appointments at night i would have reported it but i couldn't afford to go to tribunal because i had the evening program as you do so often funny hey i love talking to you i look forward to catching up soon and who knows i might be driving past Elston Park or or Melbourne University in Carlton i might just see you you're uh you're you're in a you in a you know what he called like a lime a light green shirt and and blowing your whistle and um that would be a sight to behold appreciate you joining us and you can tune tune in for finally

final siren this Friday 11 11 p.m thanks a lot Tommy and don't forget the man in lime is always fine you're listening to waitly for pay.com.au pay your business expenses with pay.com.au earn points and start getting rewarded today my new ball partner but at Sundaracen is up next want to have your say ring jerry on 1300 736 736 now back to waitly i can't escape but at Sundaracen in the summer i certainly can't escape him in the winter and that's exactly how i like it you're listening to waitly for pay.com.au pay your business expenses with pay.com.au earn points and start getting rewarded today we did the new ball last night with bass which was a heavy cricket chat you can catch up on that on your podcast app we'll get to a few cricket topics in a few moments time but for now bass welcome to waitly good to see you again how's Adelaide? I guess Adelaide goes through a few withdrawal symptoms this time every year or it has

the last three four years tom when you know gather around comes to an end and not to forget I mean there's a bit of a break between the end of fringe and gather around but that's just what around a couple of weeks so we go headlong into the fringe festival everyone's excited there's warm Adelaide and then straight into gather around and then when gather around finishes you get a bit of oh what next when's everyone else coming here but you know the people of south australia you know me we do like a bit of a break from all of you Victorians in particular but everyone helps as well and then just get get our own city to ourselves for a while before we go looking for the next one thing to do. Oh the imposters like i was last rake i was there for six days bass gather round is just it's becoming even better every single year strength of strength how's your gather round? It was busy tom but i mean i'm one of the best things i love about gather round is just the joy in people's faces and you know i mean wherever you go people are just just happy to

be in Adelaide or people from Adelaide are just happy that they get to host such a fun event and not just Adelaide all around south australia and you know i guess in the world we are in the more things we can do which may make people happy and put smiles on faces the better and i think that's seriously something i love a lot and also getting to talk up my adopted home which i'm so grateful to be in and to have settled in so that's that's another you know really good part of it the foodie itself i mean we didn't see too many close games i mean free mantle calling would was like watching a t20 game on a wet pitch tom you know except that there were no rain interruptions there was a lot of rain but i guess we've ended up gather round with the big controversy and like my co-host on stumps and bumps famously said controversy creates cash absolutely does but as a bit of a controversial moment from you and gather round you listed your top five

gernesies on channel seven can you bring us up to date what's the what was the best gernesies i've got because i think next year there'll be 18 gather round gernes he's not every club did it this year for sure yeah no i'm i would be surprised if there are 18 jerseys or like you know 18 gernesies i should say you said jersey even there was a slip up and then you come after you as they should and now i've been very careful with not saying jerseys but no i mean my top five was you know number five was not melvin i went for not melvin purely because of the the conviction and the commitment to the kangaroo right and and honestly like you know if you are selling this as australia sport to people who are moving here or to people overseas like you know just put the kangaroo front right in center on a jersey and i thought not melvin did that really well and you know me i like clashing colors and the fact that their their shorts had nothing to do with the top is what made them number five and then when then we went through i think i had adlated four which was very controversial ahead of west coast at three port at two and you know me and pink i think

pink is the color of power and i spoke about it on seven as well i mean when the west indies were flying in carry pack a series or carry pack a created world series cricket the second season if you remember when they went to colored clothing the west indies were in coru pink and you know they looked at it they thought it was kind of a joke on them and they just turned it around and became even more powerful from there so no goal course one the gun v battle for me love it bass love it some cricket issues going around our overnight and i think i just get the feeling you and i are going to be talking about this all year until he gets back into form at camera green failed again into north for thirty from two overs he made a dark which followed his thirty two not out and one for twenty eight uh in his last game um he hasn't exactly set the world on fire in this uh ipl and he's on big money um how can how real are the concerns around camera green now in t-20 cricket to add to his red ball was oh no i mean it is a big concern that and a few factors right

here he's now i mean he was bought for that significant sum of money which always brings with an extra pressure it didn't help that his lead up was not the best i mean the pressure on him during the ashes and then not making any runs during a failed t-20 campaign for australia and then he goes to calcara first game his captain rajin karahane uh in a form a test battle for india walks out and says we don't know why he's not bowling you should ask cricket australia uh when he was asked why cam green wasn't used to the ball and for the first few games he bats it number three doesn't make really much of an impact um and then they start pushing him down the order even last night i think about it five or six and got out first ball opened the bowling went for thirty runs and it doesn't help that you know when when a franchise like kkr war former champions they have spent so much money in bringing you in and they have yet to win again i mean that's not purely on cam green but you know far i think five games in

they had to wash out so they're they are riding on four losses now and it doesn't look good for them so all those things i'm sure will be weighing on on cam green and the irony is you know when that whole uh incident with tom d sent our good friend happened yeah uh in in Sydney we spoke about it on the new board and at that point even just speaking to uh some other australian player ipl bound australian players they those just feeling that the ipl would be a bit of a safe space for cam green i mean because you know i mean the franchises are very good at not protecting their players but controlling how much media exposure their players get over there um right i mean they'll be add shoots and all of that but you know in terms of interviews and all of that so i also thought that oh this is a good two and a half months period for him to just focus on his cricket just you know focus on um his eight twenty cricket and um not worry about doing too much media and all he had to do was perform but unfortunately for him that hasn't happened and that's brought in a lot of scrutiny and then because of where the ipl is now tom there was a time early on when as a foreign

cricketer you didn't perform you didn't perform but now there is this whole indianization of the ipl where if you are a foreign cricketer and you have been paid a lot of money and you don't perform they all come after you and i mean not the franchise themselves but the former cricketers all the experts on tv and um in all the regional stations as well so it can't be easy being cam green right now no it wasn't easy over the summer you're right if you want to go anywhere to avoid the spotlight yes you can avoid this train spotlight in india but you certainly got lots of eyeballs watching you and he's going to be under pressure for the rest of the ipl largely because of his pay packet and and the expectations placed upon him as a result of that but as you educated us last night on the new ball uh please do so again to uh this audience about this teenager that could be playing for it india not just a teenager a 15 year old tell us about it i know i mean look he's been quite the sensation in the last uh a couple of years the first time we heard of bible studio when she was last year when he got picked in the ipl or he was bought in the auction a year and a half ago

when he was just 13 years old i mean that it itself was very ridiculous i remember putting a post out there say what were you doing when you're 30 don't ask me and i'm not going to tell you it wasn't anything good uh but you know that's and you know and at that point a lot of cynics obviously felt like maybe it's a gimmick maybe it's just like and how could good kind of 13-year-old be easy even 13 years old but purely if you focus on what he's done with it but yes he failed a couple of nights ago went to sell first ball but he's just gone from strength to strength last year we saw glimpses of him hitting sixes of some well-known international fast bowlers and just doing it very clearly i mean there's nothing funky about his batting and i think the first time australia heard about him was when the australian under 19 team went there a couple of years ago and he made a big hundred against them in Chennai when he was i think 12 or 13 and just speaking to some of the coaches and the players who were in that team they were astounded by a

Karl Hooper was batting coach of that australian under 19 team and i remember him saying he was just astonished with how good this kid was already at 12 or 13 and then he's just gone from strength to strength like i said then the IPL last year and then the under 19 uh workup hero it's what we made 170 in like 60 balls against England in the under 19 workup final which these days you know it's on primetime television or uh here it's on amazon prime but you have the best commentators in the world he and bishops always there there's a lot of um exposure you get when you play an under 19 workup these days and he just um once again this showed that uh he was a star and and even before the start of this IPL i mean there was a bcci award and just the presentation of bible of suria once she had 15 or i think it just turned 15 or maybe you're still 14 as the next superstar of indian trade you can see that even the external forces around indian cricket the sponsors and the brands uh basically were saying all right i think we are ready for this game um and then uh all he needed to do was uh show what he's made off in a second

IPL uh whether he would have second season blues and then his first four innings he's made 200 runs it 18 sixes which include sixes of boomerang and bolt in the same game josh hezoboot mad henry and many others boomenay shwar kumar some iconic test bowlers or international bowlers and now it looks like he's going to be picked uh in this t-20 i squad to Ireland which i think india go there in june if i'm not mistaken and that'll make him the youngest ever player to play any format for india such in general called famously made his debut in karachi at the age of 16 in 1989 yeah quite ridiculous and and what a prodigy to have at their fingertips the next 20 years are going to be very fun watching him play and staying in if you can play red bowl cricket as well if he's half as good as what he's a white bowl cricket wearing for a trait as we did a story on the new ball last night about atelate oval looking to bring a regular season IPL game to the venue you live only a few minutes away from the venue you've had a night to sleep on it uh what you'll take this morning on that well it's blown up in india uh so modest um and um you know well i guess for the

second time in the last few months you are on um everybody's lips and on indian cricket uh or your name i should say i mean the last time it happened when you um you know called the World Cup final moment on scn uh when you and i uh called it with price again a few uh last month a couple of months ago but yeah i mean it has kind of rot in indian cricket or at least in indian cricket media because it took them by surprise and obviously some people have pointed out that hey but did you see that he said the bcc i haven't been approached yet or did you see that it's it's like you know it's just a very very preliminary which is what you said as well it's very early dose and it is very ambitious um but no i mean look having heard from a couple of people here in atelate um post your story being made public there is excitement i mean there's excitement they said oh look we got the um the super bikes i think we got obviously gathered around two down under the test match and our non sporting events as well a lot of them

coming um our way here in south australia so why not get an ipil game now how the logistics of it work i'm not really sure but like i said last night i put all these things i mean the fact that there is even the even talk of an ipil match being played here because even if they haven't approached the bcc i directly yet after you broke it last night on the new ball everyone in the bcc i knows about it now right they'll be getting calls from indian july saying what is this what is south australia talking about and even the possibility of the other story that you broke i guess a few weeks ago of a bbl game being played um in inchenai or in india which seems to be forming up more and more for what i hear uh i think that this i put all of that into that you know the same basket of privatization of the bbl happening right i mean they i can't see all of them being isolated events if that makes sense yeah that's right they all got they all linked together don't they and um yeah i'm with you i think it's far more likely a bbl game goes there than ipil

game comes here but you never know you've got to be in it to win it don't it bad hey we're about 30 seconds um what would be the best time zone for a game in adelaide oval for from from an indian perspective oh that is going to be the big concern because we are one at the when march we still for a five hours ahead of uh in adelaide five hours ahead of india so you're you're saying like um so so an eight eight p.m. game which starts in adelaide or a seven p.m. game is is a afternoon game there because it'll be a one-off i mean let's fantasize here if it because it's it's a one-off um i don't know i'm it's it wouldn't take too much to convince Virat Kohli to come to adelaide so who knows maybe it would work out yeah so it's not that illogical if you think about time something an afternoon game in india maybe make it a weekend everyone will watch and who doesn't want to watch cricket at the ad little as love talking to you about cricket you know that we did it for an hour last night you can catch up on the new ball on the uh scn cricket podcast app and uh i'll speak to you again next Tuesday but uh in the meantime stay in touch you're a

great man oh i certainly will Tom and uh you will be back here for gathered on next year and for a few more years i do love adelaide absolutely and i love spending time with you that's but at sunda rason joining us from adelaide talking all things cricket uh quick break and then we've got Brad Scott on zack butters and what a win over Melbourne means for the club but this is waitly for pay.com today you waitly on scn so good message is coming through uh this one from four four seven i think cam green needs to get in contact with emma muri she has the reputation as one of the best high performance mind coaches on the planet because i think cam green's problems are above the shoulders at the moment and emma's track record track record speaks for itself i mean that's an app that's a that's a great comment if you can track down emma muri she's uh she's certainly done the work uh for a long period of time now particularly with richman when they won their three flags in what was it four years uh some more message is coming through regarding nick foot and zack butters tom understand this is content for the media but seriously

why would nick foot and make it up and butters not sure what he said imagine if afel didn't back the umpire i sort i tend to agree on the last point the afel needs to back the umpire uh mostly um but it's not content for the media for the sake of content this is legitimate tribunal story uh back up the news this is your town this is your station this is waitly well essence snapped a 17 game losing streak last week zack butters is in the news for all sorts of reasons and he'll continue to be this year before he makes a decision on his future and Brad Scott didn't shy away from his views on the verdict of the tribunal last night when he spoke a few minutes ago i agree that players shouldn't have a forum to talk to umpires post game i think it's a very very dangerous road to to go down that one regardless of whether you're captain i know in some sports the captain can approach the umpires but that being said i i mean i'm probably like every footy fan and person waiting for an explanation as to how you can take one person's word over

another um there's apparently no evidence other than what one person said versus what the other person said so how your former conclusion based on that is totally beyond me i like that from Brad Scott i think that probably encapsulates the views of many people who are texting in and calling up and following this case along the journey whether you believe zack butters or you believe Nick foot is not really the point anymore it was the evidence enough to charge zack butters and find him with abusing an umpire and i think that's going to be a discussion point going forward particularly if uh port adelaide appeal the decision and we're still waiting to hear that in fact we're still waiting on the afl tribunal come back with its findings and once they come back with its fight with their findings then port adelaide will make a decision as to whether they take it to the next step or not and they do so they'll have to do so pretty much on the grounds that the decision was so unreasonable in the circumstances that no tribunal could reasonably come to that

conclusion maybe there's an error of law that will be for the lawyers to decide but either way it's a very high bar to clear plenty of round ball news as well let's head to the UK to chat some english premier league well the english premier league is reaching a torturous climax for tottenham with six games to go spurs well they're outright third last it's april 15 and then last league win was december 29 of course we have a vested interest in spurs because vans poster cogluz stint there but at the top of the table Arsenal had a slip up to born with they're still six points clear on top followed by Manchester City Manchester United and aston villa to run at the four with Liverpool in fifth to bring us up to spade is a very good friend of scn BBC broadcaster Chris Coles Chris where do we find you this afternoon? Hello Tom I am right in the middle of the country just outside just outside nottingham and looking forward to well I'm actually watching forest quite a

bit over the next few days watching them at porto in the in the european league then I'm watching a big game for them against burnley so yeah it's it's going to be a fascinating final few weeks isn't it? Well I say this afternoon it's actually morning here it's probably evening for you so I appreciate you joining us to have a chat about the round ball game can we start with tottenham as I said we've got a vested interest in what's going on there we know that there is a drop zone at the moment we also know that their league form has been horrible for the best part of four months what's your prognosis what's going on? It has been a staggering story this Tom as I'm sure many of you guys have been right across because of of Angie's links and and really you can pinpoint spurs downfall to arguably the moment that angipostercoglu left because he left spurs as Europa league winners as we know now they didn't finish particularly high in the Premier League last season but it was thought that with the appointment of Thomas Frank who at the time seemed the very shrewd appointment the former Brentford manager he would guide spurs to karma waters and it just hasn't happened they've

lurched from one disaster to the next Thomas Frank just didn't work I think fans by the end of his tenure were a bit frustrated by his negativity they didn't like the fact that spurs at home in particular weren't playing on the front foot they weren't playing the kind of football that ang had spurs playing which was this really entertaining front footed attacking football but then what happened next was was just a disaster from a from a spurs perspective with the managerial appointments that just that just weren't working and most recently ego chewed is coming for four or five games and and had an appalling time at Tottenham and now they're in this position where they've got what four or five games of the season to go and they've brought in Roberto Deserberi who on the face of it is a very good appointment but he's got so little time to turn around this is juggernaut of a football club who could be facing relegation which would be catastrophic for them financially bear in mind this is a team that will Europa League winners they were champions league

finally it's not so long ago perennial top five top six challenges in the Premier League one of the best stadiums in world football and they could be playing in the second tier it it is just been a disaster now spurs fans will point to a few things injuries have not helped so there'd be no day and two at Kulasiski no James Madison two key players for Tottenham and throughout the season they've been without some of their key players aside from those two there's no Christian Romero now for the rest of the season big player at the back so they've not been helped by injuries but they've certainly not been helped by decisions off the field and for whatever reason that the hierarchy have just not been able to to find a direction of travel that everyone is happy with and it's why they're in this perilous position with so few games to go yeah so they haven't been relegated from the top flight in England since 1976 77 I remember a few years ago when Newcastle got relegated and it it's in shock waves through the football tiers there and I think the same would apply here they still have a fighting chance they don't they they've still got what six games to

go so it's it's largely in their hands at this point but without looking to the revision mirror too much that the decision to sack and post-acogal and we are biased here and he was on the show a couple of weeks ago Jared Waitley um how's that viewed now have people changed their minds is that now seen unequivocally as an error or is that still seen as you know probably the right thing for that time this is a a question song that I think you could probably ask every single spurs fan and I think you'd probably get an answer that went both ways I don't think Angie's 10 year here will ever be unanimously unanimously agreed upon as a success or as a failure which on the face of it is a bit ridiculous because of the success he clearly had winning the Europa League and that was a massive deal for Tottenham we talk about perennial top five top six challenges that they were perennial underachievers in cup competitions and and you'll be fully aware of the spursy line that always came Tottenham's way when they kept on on failing to win trophies now and delivers a

massive trophy the Europa League is a huge European trophy and and obviously then gets jettison because of the league form now clearly looking looking back and you think well Angie's 10 year was clearly a success because of winning the Europa League and the club didn't get relegated and Angie's eat as I'm sure he did on your program as he has done in this this country when he's been on podcast has said listen there's a reason we finish so low down the table look at the teams that I played in the last few games of the season I was obviously focusing on on the Europa League title um I I suspect that most fans will look at the the angi sacking and think it was probably and maybe looking at the table now harsh and it would be seen as the right thing to do had Thomas Frank come in and steer the club to a to a mid table position but because that didn't happen and because the managerial appointments post and and post Thomas Frank and post eagle chew there just haven't worked then I think you look back and go um maybe they were a bit premature in

in sacking angi post economy but as I say you speak to spurs fans and you will get I think a pretty 50 50 opinion on whether that was the right thing to do or not which to me is just remarkable a club that has been crying out for silver and they finally get it and they sack the manager but again put my hand up on bias we're Australian here and we support our people and um and just came to get back into the Premier League do you think there's any chance that that happens anytime soon or at all well I think what probably didn't help was was the Nottingham Forest stint that that Angi had that that that I think even he would probably admit was wrong place wrong time this was a club that that were in desperate need of of someone that probably didn't have Angi's vision of football this was a team that probably needed a bit more of a the pragmatic approach to to their football because of the perilous situation that forest were in so Angi only lasted I think what eight games he didn't really have much of a chance now that's not obviously much of a barometer to judge uh and when it comes to his his second job in the Premier League my my

hunch is that he will have to go elsewhere before he gets back into the Premier League I just think there's a little bit too much baggage with Angi at the moment because of what happened at forest but if he goes elsewhere and has a really good time then I suspect that they will be chair chairman uh that would look at Angi and think here's someone that has a track record of winning trophies he's got a track record of attractive football um he's going to bring some headlines with him so he's he's definitely worth uh he's definitely worth a look but my hunch is that after forest I think it I think he's a little bit damaged in the minutes but that could easily change yeah particularly because he always said everywhere he goes he wins then notting forest ended in the blaze of glory I think it was what 38 days or something ridiculous at the time yeah um at the other end of the table it's just starting to get a little bit tense isn't it Arsenal six points clear of man city but man city had that game in hand and they also play each other so uh the loss that the Arsenal's most recent loss is quite significant there massive Tom absolutely huge this game coming up sunday hour time so so what early hours of Monday morning for you it this is it this is the

title decider which looked unthinkable a few weeks ago with Arsenal serenely progressing and Manchester City wobbling and it looked like finally Arsenal would would win this Premier League first time in over 20 years they would they would banish the memories of the last few seasons where they finished second either behind Liverpool or behind Manchester City and then all of a sudden they have just had this massive wobble where they were wobbling in the Premier League then they lost in the FA Cup to Southampton in the championship they only just got past sporting Lisbon in the Champions League one and in the first leg they play their second leg tomorrow and they lose as you say against Bournemouth and suddenly it's in Manchester City's hands because of the game they play at the Etihad on sunday so the gap is six points but Manchester City have a game in hand that game in hand comes in a couple of weeks away at Burnley who were 19th in the table you fancy Manchester City to win that so if they beat Arsenal on sunday and they beat Burnley then you expect them to be level on points with Arsenal but probably ahead because of the goal difference which

will almost certainly be better than Arsenal's which makes this game on sunday colossal and if Manchester City win it then they become type of favourites Arsenal are still I think the favourites you would still much rather be in their position you speak to any manager and they always say give me the points on the board yes games in hand are great but it matters not if you lose them leads to feet over Man United was significant particularly given Leeds position on the table because they're in a bit of a relegation dogfight themselves they've only won now eight games for the season so that was two one at Old Trafford as well away from home but there was a flashpoint in this match and Australian sporting fans would be I think quite shocked at the way that some managers speak about referee his post game I was going to quote Michael Carrick who is the the manager of Leeds he said I'm sorry I've mentioned United he said worst of all this is about a hair pulling incident we've got to be careful where the game is going it's a shocking decision absolutely shocking you know like

it's it's a it's such harsh criticism but what what are your thoughts on that red card and what were your thoughts on the match itself because it was such an important win for Leeds well firstly on that massive for Leeds who I think are all but safe now they were in the in the relegation battle but that that victory has has given them a level of comfort now and and such was the manner of the victory I think that will do them the world of good that they deserved it I think even before the red card they were they were by far the better team they were tuna leopard at that stage and could have been further clear Manchester United were flat Leeds were very good so great win for them yeah the red card has as as again really divided opinion here my my hunches is this I think this probably shines a light more on VAR than than the air pulling incident the rules are quite clear you pull anyone's hair and it's a it's a straight red card so the rules were applied correctly in this instant but they were only applied correctly because VAR spotted the infringement the referee didn't now with VAR it's it's sadly it's black and white the moment the technology

spots it it's a red card but the action was was was negligible Tommy it was such a little brushed Lissandra Martin they sort of sort of glide his hands through Dominic Calvert Lewin's ponytail there was no real intent there it was almost like he was for me grappling for balance and just made contact with Calvert Lewin's hair he post matched Dominic Calvert Lewin said I didn't really feel anything I I was made aware of it I said to the referee this has happened and it's not really up to me what happens next I kind of see where Michael Carrick is coming from because I think it does set a dangerous precedent but also I think his comments are a little bit over the top and I suspect he'll be getting a letter from the FA about it because that they were he to the moment stuff so is that what happens they just get a letter and everyone moves on well that he'll get it well it depends on the the severity of of what what was said and if it's if it's not too bad and in this instance it probably was a little bit over the line he may well get more than just

the letter may will be he may get a touch line ban he may get a fine it all depends on how generous or not the FA are feeling but normally if it's your first offense which probably is for Michael Carrick because he's he's not too outspoken then he might just get a a wrap on the knuckles but yeah it'll be interesting to see how the rule changes if it changes at all because it's not the first hair pulling incident we've had in the Premier League this season and I don't think it'll be the last yeah and and there was only just a you can't even tell looking at it whether it was deliberate or intentional and yet the VA gave him a red card so that will be a talking point in the coming days for sure now I'm looking on the BBC website as as we speak right now I know you work for the BBC we're talking to Chris Coles and I'm reading an article from Johnny Coleman who and the headline is this when could wolves be relegated so I click on that because that's a great great headline and I think when they can be relegated and their season is an utter just debacle isn't it 17 points from 32 matches their 15 points from safety with six games to go is it one of the worst Premier League

seasons we've seen in recent times well no question no question I mean that the headline when could wolves be relegated I think if you spoke to most wolves fans they would have said probably December was when we were relegated it has been it has been disastrous for them they've they've not won a single away game all season it's been it's been coming I think for wolves sadly because they've they've they've been a club over the years that have tended to to buy young players sell them for huge profit and then be quite fortunate that they've been able to replace those young players with with more very good players so they used to have some I mean some world stars Ruben Neves Jamutino Ryanate Norrie who's now at Manchester City all of these guys who were brilliant but they've not been able to replace them so this season has been long overdue it's not quite the worst season ever Darby still hold the lowest ever points total and that's 11 so wolves have comfortably got past them but it's it's been it's been horrible for them Robert was that the relative new manager basically has to try and end the season as well as they can and rebuild next season it's been an

example of if you let big decisions just get away from you in the transfer window if you don't really look too far ahead and you're very reactive instead of proactive then this sort of thing can happen and it's happened to wolves it could happen to top them it could happen to West Ham there is some big signs that we're playing in a championship next season but it's not been great at Molinu the wolves fans have really endured a an awful season and yeah not winning a single away game from home it's not been great for the fans on their travels either so yeah they've got they've got lots of work to do next season pretty grim are too more for you at the two best football documentaries or soccer documentaries I think in recent years have been Sunday until I die and welcome to Rexham so let's ask about Sunday because they're not too far off from a European spot which would which would quite remarkable given where they were when that first season of the documentary is made all those years ago and they couldn't even I think they're in league one at the time yeah well well the the the best part about that documentary Tom is that the Sunday until I die documentary was very much there to document Sunderland's they got relegated

to the championship and the documentary was meant to showcase Sunderland's big fight back into the Premier League instead they documented their relegation to league one yeah and obviously it made for great TV because we're all watching a club in absolute free fall um it if Sunderland have had a bonkers few years and actually they've been an example of what what happens when you get it right off the field and yes it was it was awful six seven years ago but they've they've had their time in the lower leagues but they've got it so right this season they they've got an excellent manager and Regis Lebrisse who is tactically very shrewd he's a great man manager fans love in players love him but they were so good in the transfer window in the summer they they'd strengthen really really sharply and acutely and they did everything right so they're they're reaping the rewards for that and they've had a great season they've had a brilliant season whatever happens from here on in it's been great at the stadium of light and yes because of the way year at works there's possible that there could be eight even nine teams from England in Europe next season so

Sunderland could even be one of those so great for them and it's it's a massive footballing hotbed the northeast we've got Newcastle up there we've got Sunderland there massive clubs and it's great to see them well Sunderland in particular absolutely thriving this season in the championship Rexham a seventh four points off six now that's a fairytale that is that is a fairytale waiting to be written and a bit like what you said about Sunderland when they're making documentaries we don't really want mid-table plotters we want other teams to get relegated and blow up for teams to go up and at least reach the the playoff stage talk us through the process there and how Rexham can get up into the Premier League next season yeah well Rexham are four points outside of the championship playoff places now this is a side that has had an an absolutely incredible rise up the ranks and this is mainly down to the the the influence of the Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and and Tom McLeanie who who have invested in this club they wanted a club to to invest in

and they had a quite a few on their radar actually they had the likes of York I think were on there and Rexham and they wanted a club where who they felt had great potential but had been completely derelict and run down and Rexham absolutely one of those sides that have been floating around in the lower league they've been non league for an awfully long time once a very good club and a very big club but have been left to left to die sadly until Ryan Reynolds and co breathe new life into it huge investments huge interest in what the Rexham story is and they've gone through the leagues National League to League 2 to League 1 and now they're on the the brink of the championship playoffs to get into the Premier League if Rexham get there Tom it would be just a unbelievable story now listen there will be those that are quite cynical and say well yes you pump any club full of money and they are going to rise up the leagues very quickly and and that there is there is an argument to say yes it's not quite the the fairytale like for instance when Luton Town went up a few years ago because they had no real budget but still it'll be an interesting

story and it'll be something that the world will be very interested in if Rexham get into the Premier League because as I say this was a club five six years ago were getting gates of sort of one thousand two thousand and were playing in in real low level football in England so if they do get up it'll be a story one way or other and yeah and even if they don't do it this year it won't be long because as I say the the interest they have and the money there they are they are primed to to get into the Premier League well it makes me want to go to Rexham was I think I'd never heard of it before I saw the documentary and even after to be fair even after seeing the documentary I wasn't sure I wanted to go there but yeah but now they're playing so well it looks like they've they've jazzed it up a bit hey Chris really appreciate your time it's reaching a very exciting climax to the Premier League season and also the championship and other leagues around the world I'm sure we'll speak to you again soon. Look forward to it Tom take it easy BBC Broadcaster Chris Coles joining us on Waitley. Want to have your say ring Jared on 1300 736 736

a setback for player umpire relationships and that's from five one two let's go to news time and then we'll take a couple more calls and mop up the rest of the days news including Stephen King who's spoken at Melbourne a few minutes ago thanks Nathan great job as always let's go to a call who wants to talk about spurs Rob is in Strathmore welcome to Waitley Rob. Well thanks how are you? Very good thanks oh they did to me you do with the gosh everyone um I know this is all news but well I found it amazing that at 50 50 with spare supporters that and should have got sacked them and it was plainly obvious that he had his deflates so many lasty that he was nursing them to get to that European cup final and then he loaded up with players that were fit again and that's why he won't let him in the sacrifice of Premier League to win that these morons for his supporters 50 50 wanted in fact I mean I just can't believe it Rob um I don't

think I could have said it better myself uh it staggers me I'm not a soccer expert I do like the sport I did follow Tottenham and and plus to Coglu when he was there more more closely but I just I just can't understand another season um who knows what could have happened but it wasn't to be appreciate you call uh plenty after the break we want to get to as well Stephen King is speaking uh at Melbourne I want to play some audio from Locking Neal when he was asked about his future I think the Locking Neal sweepstakes are pretty big and Dan Bredick who's going to join us tomorrow uh he's the chief cricket writer for Sydney Morning Herald on the age him alongside Tom Decent have broken uh a pretty big story regarding the potential for uh the BBL franchises to be sold so we'll get to that in a few moments time uh no more calls are on the uh metro patrolem and mr wippy competition Lee answered correctly salted caramel is the correct answer so what are to Lee uh metro patrolem and mr wippy are giving back to the community bringing happiness and support to every stop this is waitly for radio telematics fleet managers and business owners it's time

to take back control get radius GPS trackers plus integrated dash cams all live on your mobile Apple desktop visit radius dot com waitly on se and that's the plan we've got main trainings morris so um I think it will take too much of the twisting of Chris's arm but he was um he was bit reserved today and he's pressed so thanks Scotty um but that's definitely the plan so the plan is for patrolem jane jafield to play on Friday night against the western board dogs but he stopped short of 100% confirming of danger fields only played one senior game this year that was against frio uh in round one he missed the games against goal coast out of laid Hawthorne and west coast to understandably he's desperate to get back out there uh locky niels future is going to be a talking point all year already is I think at one at some stage if he does have a good year there's a sweepstakes forum there's a there's a group of clubs who are exploring bringing him in because he's a free agent he's a dual brown line metalist um and he is still playing some really good football whether it's in the midfield or even on a flank uh no one knows where he's

own intentions are whether he'd like to go back to Perth where his family is uh whether he'd like to go back to Adelaide of course he's from south australia in the first place or whether he's happy to stay at the Brisbane lines and sign a one or even a two-year deal or maybe even come to Victoria we don't know what he's thinking what we do know is that his future is going to be a hot topic of conversation throughout the year. What I want to do decision-making for you next year you're out of contact with him this year I thought what are you supposed to do next two months didn't make it this year. Oh everything family football and my own happiness and yeah there's a lot that we'll go into that and yeah no I need it. I'm making a decision yet and but what I do knows I love this football club I'll probably try and do everything I can to stay but if if not then that's the case but um that will weigh all that up over the next three or four months. Does that add to the shoe that it might be last year if you're lucky being one man? No that's no drive in fact we're not. Our own in-premise ships every year and yeah that like

next year or this being my last year whatever and yeah that doesn't come into a go and hopefully it's not. I feel I mean the Brisbane jump is well on 36 now it's all just 37 for so yeah we go. I like that line from Locking Hill I want to win Premise ships it just makes me think that West Coast isn't maybe in the picture as musters what we thought based on family issues that have been well-publicised over the summer. He's the sort of guy that wouldn't want to just go and be a gun player to bottom team. I think he probably wants to win and make the most of the last few years of his career. Carlton are struggling to say the least. They're one and four. Harry McCoy has it to mix feedback. I was on fireball on Monday morning and Cain Corns was fairly critical of his work, where David King was probably a little bit more balanced and said that he tried hard. He brought the border ground against Adelaide in wet and windy conditions, but this is his view on the team's performance and where Carlton's going. To be really honest, I think we played some pretty solid footy just for the out like a hundred of 120 minutes. I think we played a hundred solid minutes

and then that 20 minutes saw that small 10% as killed us. Obviously, win loss would be great to be in a different spot, but that's the nature of footy and we've only got ourselves to blame. I do think on the weekend or last week, we played again pretty solid footy for three and a bit quarters against a pretty good side, so definitely heading in the right direction. We would have loved a couple more wins, but inside the four walls it feels different to maybe historically last few years. It feels very stable and very sound and even though, as I said, the results haven't been ideal. The way we're going about and the trajectory seems pretty clear, so it's still got a good feeling about it. It's exactly what you'd expect, Harry McCarty, to stay in this situation. He was on AFL 360 last night, of course, in a pretty wide-ranging interview and he's always pretty honest, but as I mentioned before, his own form has been a subject of much discussion and it was always going to be the case, given that he is the big banana down there now without Charlie Kernow, who of course moved to Sydney and with that comes more responsibility and more attention and a sharper spotlight

on every game that he plays. He's never too far away. I think, as I keep forward, the margins are so fine. I guess, overall, my main job is to compete in the air, bring the board around and keep launching the ball, more will stick than they won't. I think over the five games, this is sometimes a result of what happens at other fields and forwards always would like a bit more better ball movement, but no, all you can keep doing is keep showing up. I think ahead of the ball, we're competing pretty well and scoring relatively well when it comes in, but yeah, it's always like to stick a few more games, but yeah, keep going. Keep going. That's all you can do in these situations, particularly for at Carlton, when the pressure is hot and there's scar tissue from several years of, well, I don't want to say no success. They might have prevailed in the played finals, but they certainly haven't really been close to winning a flag or beat up by five goals against Brisbane in a, in a, in a prelim. So maybe they were closer than what we thought. Regardless,

the pressure is on Carlton against Collinwood. This Thursday night, Jack Genniven is a play that has matured tremendously on and off the field. He was on the agenda set his last night. Yeah, when I saw a million dollars, it sounds weird. Like, I still think I'm, you know, this kid from Kasman and it all doesn't feel real. You know, I mean, like one million dollars is a lot, but, you know, I've loving my time with Hawthorne. I love seeing. Hopefully, he signs very soon. So if he signs, I might sign as well. We're joking about it today. I saw his face in the paper and he's a million dollars then. So I asked him for a coffee today, which is good. So, yeah, I want to be a Hawke Hawke for, you know, the next five, six years. Five, six years, maybe 10 years, as well. I think Jack Genniven's Renaissance or evolution from being a small forward who got eight touches in a game and kicked a couple of goals to being a genuine forward-running flanker and occasional midfielder, picking up 25 and 30 is actually amazing. And he's the first to admit that he was, and this is not his word, but essentially a passenger when Colin would won the flag. He was frustrated to be traded. I remember that day clearly. I was sitting in this exact SN studio with

Sam Edmund. Couldn't quite believe what was going on later in that trade period. The club was done with him. The pies were, were for whatever reason, fatigued by Jack Genniven. Sam Mitchell saw something and he's created a player that we think is even better than what we could have imagined at the time. So well done to Sam Mitchell, the Hawkes and Jack Genniven for that trade. Brad Scott had the pressure eased on him following the win over Melbourne. Andrew Welsh then went, the president went on a, I guess, a media spree or an interview spree with the Harold Sun in the age confirming that he wants Brad Scott to be the club's next premiership coach. And this morning he spoke about what that win over the demons meant for the club. It's reward for all the effort because when you're putting in the effort, the effort that I see behind the scenes, the work that goes on throughout the week, when you're not getting some reward from the result and the scoreboard, it can, it can be challenging. And we work really hard on sort of separating the result from the process, but the reality is after a while you need some reward for the effort.

And so I was really pleased for the, really for the players first and foremost to get that, that reward, but also for our fans who have been through a really difficult times. Just a brief change of pace now, Dan Bredig and Tom Deeson are writing for the age in the Sydney Morning Herald too. Very good cricket journalist that Queensland will join New South Wales in pressing the pause button on cricket Australia's plan to sell stakes in big bash league clubs, leaving the governing body without nationwide consensus on the float. Now there was a board meeting on Tuesday night, Bredig reports where Queensland made it clear that it will seek further clarity from CA about plans for the partial side of the club. They don't need it to be unanimous, but they'd like there to be more of a consensus. So we'll have Dan Bredig on tomorrow talking about all that. It is a vexed issue. Some states would love their franchises to be sold, some aren't so sure. And I'm sure there's more to play out. So I'm looking forward to speaking to Dan Bredig about that tomorrow. All right, let's have a listen to Stephen King who held his weekly press conference earlier. First up, he was asked about the review following the loss to the Essen and bombers on Saturday

at Adelaide Oval. Yeah, the review this week was, I mean, all phases were pretty poor, but our contest to start the game was off. Our urgency around the footy wasn't at a level it needed to be. And then that steeped out into the other phases. So when you're getting beaten around the ball, you're not quite as sharp as what you have been. You're sort of chasing Taliban a bit. And then when you win the ball back, you lose a bit of energy to get after the game. So in a way, there's never a positive out of it, but we get to have a bit of a deep dive in into our game and a few conversations as a group. And then we get to go and train it and improve on it. So for me, these performances are going to keep happening at times. We'd love them to narrow the gap between our best and their worst. And that's what we're trying to do. But yeah, I think when the contest doesn't go your way, it makes the game pretty hard. Did it feel like a bit of a reality check, even the result from the week before? Not a reality check. I think we've had a pretty emotional month. We've had some milestone games. We've had some come from behind wins.

And our history against SFN over in Adelaide wasn't great. So we didn't walk over there thinking, I think everything we said was about process and that work without the footy. But yeah, it was a different week. We've got some young players who are still finding their gap between their best and their worst. And as I said after the game, we're full credit to SFN. I thought they're outstanding. They got after the game and they brought an energy to the intensity that we're trying to chase ourselves. Just on the S&D. I mean, a lot of Melbourne fans look at that. What's the deal gather around playing S&D? Yeah, obviously you weren't a part of the other team. But what's the psychology behind that? Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not a psychologist. I'm just the coach. It's five games in. I try and motivate the group, but I was aware of the history, so I didn't tap in the two much around the right boys. We have to now back up Gold Coast Meen and Beat S&D, because it was more about playing in that gather round at the Adelaide Oval against another opposition. And I think if you look too far back with a different group, with a different coach, it's dangerous game to play. And I'm more about you learn from the past, but you don't look back good or bad. That's irrelevant now. It's about moving forward and

creating your own path with a new group. And that's what we try and do, and obviously you can get reward. Just on Brisbane, obviously a lot of midfield, you know, Depp Guns. Colton tagged earlier in the season. Yeah, so much last couple of weeks. Do you sort of look at that potentially? Yeah, there's lots of things you could look at. They've probably got about 12 players we can tag. So they're not only in their midfield, they're forwards. They're a good team. We did a bit of op-o just before, and without, you know, I don't think you can go through every single player of theirs, and I think our players understand how good Brisbane are and how good they've been for a long period of time now. So, yeah, we'll get through T1 today and train, and then have a bit more of our strategy meeting this afternoon around potential matchups and what we can do. Which, which in any midfield has kept you up another most? Oh, geez, I mean, they've, yeah, you look at the inside, it's, you know, Dunkley, Neil, Ashcroft's elevated, he's going on another level, McCleggie just come back. Then you've got Rainer and Baylor that come up at Stoppage when they please, and there's a lot there. So, I think, yeah, we can't just be a club that reacts every week

and changes our game the way we play the opposition. We've got to understand what fuels our game and our belief, but also what can maybe you could tweak some things to extinguish some of the opposition's strengths, and that's what we'll try and do, but we've got to, as a young coach, I still want us to play our game and get after it our way. I've enjoyed the competition today. Plenty of juicy topics to get out teeth intervals with some heavy topics as well with James Gallagher. Off the top, you can listen to that chat. The AFL plays association CEO on your podcast app, as you can with, but at some derasin, even Mark Fein called up, Fein is final siren. What a pleasure it was to speak to him. Your calls were a major feature. We'll take some more tomorrow on the Hyundai Openline 13736736 enjoy early deals at Hyundai pre-ofeast on now, participating Hyundai dealers. I just want to read out this text message. I got it 9.38 this morning on the on the text message on the temperate 40-wings temper text. Tom, I'm from a small country town. My wife is a primary school teacher. The school has respectful relationships and disability and inclusivity programs at the school. These are targeting targeted at educating young children to

prevent against domestic violence and prejudices such as racism and homophobia. These are small steps but may take years or even a generation for it to become practice behavior. It is very hard to change behaviors that are ingrained in children through generations of behaviors before then. Really good text from 5.3. I appreciate all the people who messaged in today with their thoughts and there was a variety of thoughts. I can tell you that. Adam Simpson's with me tomorrow from 9am for the eye of the coach. Up next is Dwayne Russell, Midday Madness will be mad as usual. Your calls.
