What to Do When Adults are Childish - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
About this episode
Have you ever seen a child get so angry and frustrated that they say something like, “you’ll miss me when I’m dead!” as they go stomping off? Feeling misunderstood, unappreciated, or unloved triggers a very primal need to be understood, appreciated and loved, and children often don’t have the nuances of language to adequately express what they’re feeling.
Is there someone in your life who uses dramatic language? When an adult over-reacts out loud to something that doesn’t go their way, that’s your clue that you need to either help them express themselves better or exit the conversation. If you’re their manager, a private conversation is in order to help you understand what set them off, and also to help them understand their reaction wasn’t appropriate. You could say something like, “I’m sorry you’re upset – can you tell me more about what’s bothering you?”
Trying to reason with someone in that situation won’t uplift them, it’ll just drag you down with them, and that’s not where you want or need to be.
