InCharge Radio's Podcast — What is Asset Valuation?. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
0:00If you're having second thoughts or can't quite come to a firm decision about a major financial transaction, it may help to think in terms of asset valuation. This is a money minute from InCharge Education Foundation in MilitaryMoney.com. Asset valuation is the process of determining the current worth of an asset or company, whether you're choosing investments for a portfolio or financing a business. Knowing when an asset is worth and what determines that value is the start to making an intelligent decision. An investor should not pay more for an asset than its worth. This may seem logical and obvious, but it is often forgotten and rediscovered in every generation and market. Perceptions may be all that matter when it's a painting, but most assets should not be bought for aesthetic or emotional reasons. The price we pay for any asset should reflect the cash flows that is expected to generate. Asset prices cannot be justified by thinking there will be other investors around who will pay a higher price in the future. The problem with investing with the expectation that there will be a bigger full of sell-to is that you might end up being the biggest full of all.
