The Eagles and Dallas Goddard have got themselves a deal for 2026. The veteran titan is coming back to the Eagles. His $20 million cap hit if you walked.

2:03If that contract boyded, that's not hit the books. The Eagles get their titan back for 2026. On a one year, $7 million deal for Dallas Goddard. I have a lot of thoughts on this. What it means, what it means now for the AJ market. What it's always saying about Dallas and how the Eagles can approach the NFL draft knowing that they've got some tight ends on this roster here. But the first thing that hit me when I saw it is it sets them up to trade AJ Brown. I think a lot of what's going on here the last few days has really been a matter of getting ducks in a row. When I think how he Roseman has really put the baseline down for the trade of AJ Brown. Whether it be the Patriots or the Rams now, and I think the Patriots still stand out as the most likely shooter. He has set a price. He has put a market out there. And what to me held things back was the Goddard situation. Because, well, I think these dead capits are mostly, you know, they're mostly calculus and numbers.

3:07They're not really huge, huge, huge detriment to how the Eagles build their football team. Because they build a lot of this in them and they welcome capits. They welcome dead capits. It's how they build their contracts. And then they do void years on basically every deal with these dummy years so they could lower the capit in the first year and play with future money, which always rises. The money in the futures always more than this in the current. Because that's just the state of how the NFL does their salary cap. It never goes down and always goes up. So if you could push, you know, give it $12 million contracts that paying 12 today and zero tomorrow. Pay four today, eight tomorrow because that eight tomorrow is really six or whatever it is. And you're basically barring against yourself for years to come because years are never ending in the NFL. So it's a brilliant strategy. It's worked really well for the Eagles, even though it looks messy. It looks dirty on the salary cap. It's not that dirty. Now, the Goddard retention, though, and I do think there's a limit to how much Eagles want to take in terms of one year salary capits and dead cap.

4:10We know the AJ things going to be about 40 that Goddard, they would have been out been about 20. So I think there's a reason the two were intertwined and it felt like if the Eagles traded AJ first and the Goddard thing that worked out by the deadline, well, then they were going to be stuck with about $64 million in dead cap. And I believe they had to be this order of operations because if the AJ tree was done Friday, if I'm Goddard's agent, I'm running the hardest bargain in the world because if you don't give me what I want, okay, well, it's anything and you got this $20 million dead cap on top of what you did with the AJ trade a couple days ago. Now you're at 64. So I think how he had to get this done first. It now lets them breathe. They have set a plenty of cap space. They could clearly absorb the AJ trade whenever they want. If they want to do it in June, great. I mean, if that works out and they can find the right deal in June, that is more advantageous. But unless the Eagles have a trick up their sleeve here for a highly priced player, they're going to bring in maybe maybe a Jonathan Thurganard, maybe another edge.

5:21Boring that. If the draft is really in a draft and just some small pieces is what's to come this off season, they have plenty of cap space to absorb the AJ brown trade whenever they want. They could absorb it now, they could absorb it. April, a draft night, they could absorb it on June 2nd. And that would be better, but they could absorb it now. So I think the Dallas certainly helps them with the AJ brown trade market. Now, second part of having Dallas got it back. They now can go into the draft with not desperate at the tight end position. Now, a few days ago, it was going to be desperation at the tight end position because they had a zilch. I mean, they had nothing. We were talking about an empty room when the start of free as he happened. Now, you have Dallas got it back in a one year deal. You have Calcutta and you have Johnny Mutt. Now, is that a long term tight end room? No, I don't think it is. I think that's a very, very short term tight end room. It's a band-aid as they install new offense. But we were heading to a point where if they didn't get this done,

6:25they were really going to be between a rock and a hard place to tight end of the draft because you don't want to overdraft someone just to have a player. But in real life, without Goddard, Calcutta and Mutt would have been the worst tight end duo in the NFL. So where is the rookie they're going to draft? You know, what would have been in the second, third, fourth round? And would that guy just have to have to start because he's the best player? Now, it gives them some options. They don't have to draft a tight end. I highly recommend they do. You could always cut Calcutta or Mutt to camp or whatever. And you could have that bridge here where you have multi-tied ends. You have Goddard. You have the rookie. I like the kid out of Vanderbilt. And you kind of let it play out for a year before the natural transition happens where Goddard leaves and whoever your draft takes over. So, you know, the Eagles always try to have something at the position. So they don't go into a draft at any position. So completely barren at the spot.

7:26Then other teams know and they tell a graph who they have to draft. And teams could jump over them. You know, how he likes to be, you know, make teams, keep seeing his guessing. And be able to take the best player. And I totally, totally think that's the right way to do it. And I think the Eagles use free agency in that way. Like this year, he feels like the user free agency to just patch some holes up. Get to the draft without a clear, overwhelming need. Like, if I had to say right now, they're clearest need pre-age a trade. Because they just go off the idea, age is still here right now. So, why do you receive her as is it as clear of a need? The number one need would be a safety. They don't have anything at safety right now. Next to McCuba, you feel great about. Lineback, they have players. Edge, they have players. Up front, they have players. Corners, they have plenty of players. O-line, they have players. Running back, they have players. Quarterback, they have players. Perceiver, they have players. Tight end, they've at least got the players now. It's safety.

8:26Safety is the only position I see at this moment. That is the, whoa, that's a hole. I mean, that looks pretty thin at safety. So, would it surprise me if they landed someone in the next two weeks? That's a really good one. Now, I thought Cicquan and Brisk are a bit of good signing. He ended up on the Pittsburgh Steelers. You know, there are some guys that have moved this off season that I've liked at safety position. And they haven't been on those. And there could be a safety in the first round. That is worth taking a look at. If the Eagles somehow could trade up with the Los Angeles Rams and swap AJ there. And end up with the number 13 pick. If Caleb Downs is on the board, I wouldn't, I wouldn't walk to the podium. I would, I wouldn't even run. I sprint to the podium to get Caleb Downs out of Ohio State. I think it'll be gone. We'll see. But this does help the Eagles strap wise to not telegraph how badly the tight end position is in me.

Next thing I thought of with the Goddard contract was the salary. One year, $7 million. That is a very, very tiny amount for a starting tight end in the NFL. In fact, looking this morning, is my research is correct. I think Dallas Goddard now is a 23rd highest paid tight end in the NFL in average annual value of those $7 million for the one year. Charlie Kohler, the tight end who was the former third stringer with the Baltimore Ravens. Now I'm going to go out and compete for 101A with Gadsden out with the Los Angeles Charter. It's got more money per year than Dallas Goddard.

11:29It is striking the market for Goddard where it's gone the last two years. The Eagles have been right. Goddard unfortunately has been wrong. And I think ultimately our eyes have been correct. Dallas Goddard's into the car. It's been easy to see that from the past few seasons. He's not the same player. He doesn't run the same. Certainly doesn't block the same. I mean, he does not block. I think it's been part of the issue in the run game that he just simply doesn't block the way he did when he was a young player. I think it's a product of his body being beat up. A lot of snaps, a lot of years. You know, this is at the NFL. It's very hard to say that that quality of a run blocker for that long in that many years. So I'm not surprised that Dallas Goddard's not that guy anymore. I am a little bit surprised that the league. I've seen it to such a strong degree that no one wants to pay it. I mean, anyone in the league could have Goddard. And I'm sure LA mentioned this on our show on at first town hall. I am sure that over the past week or so.

12:32While the Eagles and Goddard were pushing back this void date. I'm sure Goddard's age is out there, gauging the market. If the Eagles and Goddard couldn't find their way to an agreement. I'm sure that conversation happened. All right, guys, what happens here? Let's say we can't find our way to a deal. What do you think my clients worth? Where would this go? All that kind of stuff. So I'm sure that is a legitimate thing. And if Goddard and his agent knew that he had a three year, $40 million offer out there. They would have just sold the Eagles kick rocks when they were debating or going over the one year, $7 million. Yeah, they would have told him, no, absolutely not. There's just no way we're taking a deal like that. Now, the fact that that didn't happen and Goddard ended up back here, I think it's pretty telling. I think it's pretty telling that we're at that stage of Goddard's career where this is the market for him. And the market doesn't lie. That's what he's worth. And I think the last thing I thought when I saw the deal go down, the contract, the year, the reality of their depth chart now, the AJ thing,

13:38is we really got to stop getting fooled as fans by counting stats on the offensive side. We do this a lot with touchdowns. Touchdowns because the touchdowns, right? They're they're they help you win games and they're important and we play fantasy football. Touchdowns are sexy and touchdowns make you feel like the player did that. And he did, he did it in the context of the offense. I think touchdowns have become for front office people in the NFL. What runs batted in were back in the day for Major League Baseball. RBI's are great, but that's not how you value a player because they are circumstantial. They are in a lot of ways team dependent and they are moment dependent more than that. They measure the skill moving forward of the player. I was a kid, Joe Carter. He's not going to run a year. Joe Carter was not a great, great, great player. But he hit fourth. He hit third. The middle of the lineup. Guys got on base.

14:38He knocked him in. Ryan Howard was a better version of Joe Carter. But again, it was the similar to when he was putting up those big R behind numbers. Some more to put him in the upper echelon of all the players in baseball. And he was up. He was high. He was an excellent offense player. But it wasn't because of his runs that been. That just happened to be a feature of his game really because of where he hit in the lineup in front of all those guys that got on base that he knocked him in. I think it touchdowns in a similar way. You know, I think it touchdowns in a way that you have guys some running backs who just bolt your touchdowns on the goal line. They'll rack up 15, 15, 16. You're never here for them again. Dallas Scott at last year had a lot of touchdowns. He was a good red zone target. But I think a lot of that was steamed up. Could almost any starting tight end have done that in those moments? If you just put them on the field. Seemed them up. I think they could have. That doesn't move me as, oh, that's him.

15:38When you watch George Kitto, when you watch Tucker Kraft last year before he got hurt. When you watch a coast and loved one now, Kelsey, it is best. Those guys are getting open, winning with technique, winning with size, winning with strength, winning with hands, and making place. That is a transferable year-to-year skill. Those are transferable year-to-year skills. Got her to love and touchdowns. Clearly didn't move any of them. Clearly the market looked at them. That's great. That's cool. He's probably not going to do that again. That was more product of the scheme. The quarterback in that moment. The offensive line in that moment. The Tula in that moment. And the fact that the rest of the offensive guys, whether it be Jailin or AJ or Devonte or Safewater Tank, got them to the goal line. Got them to the four yard line. Got them to the five yard line. I think Dallas just kind of popped it in. I think when we looked at his touchdowns last year, we were like, how can we let that get away? Well, this is very little to believe and little reasonably.

16:40Got us going to have that many touchdowns again. Just because he's Dallas Goddard. He didn't really ever do it before last year. We know he's an older declining player. I doubt he's going to do it again. So that to me is not a transferable skill year-to-year. It doesn't stick. It doesn't go year-to-year because that's not who you are. That was team dependent on that particular moment in time in those games in that season. Got her back. I think it's that's how we have for the AJ deal. Don't we speak into us on what they think of his value? 23rd highest rates. I didn't in the NFL. And of course, just the seven million. And I think those touchdowns fooled us a little bit last year. And how much you'd get paid. How much you should get paid. And what a good contract you actually looks like in 2026. I appreciate everyone listening, subscribing. Follow the podcast.
