That’s not random.That’s a pattern.
You’re not missing information. You’re ignoring signals.
Your nervous system flagged it.Your gut knew.
Then you overrode it.
Blindsided isn’t surprise. It’s what happens after you ignore the warning.

People think getting blindsided is rare. It's not, it's happening everywhere, not occasionally, not randomly, consistently. And it's costing people more than they realize. This is trust you that save your ass. I'm Professor Mike. And I'm Dr. Nick, Real Neuroscience, Life or Death Stakes, zero guesswork. And today we're talking about a pattern that's running through millions of lives right now, a pattern that shows up in relationships, health, money, career, even decisions. I know. And most people have no idea none that they're caught up in it. Not until it's too damn late. That's what happens. But by the time you finish listening to this episode, you're going to see it everywhere. And once you see it, you cannot unsee it. You can't unsee it. No. And that's when everything changes. It most certainly does. Wow, changes indeed.
So let's start with something simple. Listen to how often you hear this phrase, oh, I didn't see it coming. No, I didn't see it coming. Relationships, health, health crisis, financial disasters, career implosions, different situations, different people, same sentence. I didn't see it coming. And that statement assumes something appeared out of nowhere, no warning, no signal, no indication, just boom, blindsided. That's not what's actually happening. That's never what's actually happening because before we get into the neuroscience before we talk about how your nervous system works, we need to establish something fundamental. And that's the scale of the problem. This isn't about isolated incidents. This isn't about bad luck happening to a few unlucky people. It's a pattern affecting millions of people every single day. And the statistics prove it. Let me give you some numbers. Over 12 million people are misdiagnosed every year in the US alone. 12 million. And of those
around 800,000 lead to serious harm or death. That's not rare. That's not unpredictable. That's happening daily. Now let's look at relationships. 81% of people lie on their online dating profiles. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, 81% nearly half of marriages and in divorce. You'd wonder why. And people say I still didn't see it coming. Really? Within 81% lie rate and a 45% divorce rate, you didn't see it coming. Now look at business decisions. Only 4% people hire the wrong person. Long hires, bad decisions, costly mistakes that could have been avoided. Again, the same phrase, you know, I didn't see it coming. Well, 47% of the people make the wrong career choice almost had when it doesn't work out. What do they say? Oh, I didn't see it coming once again. Yeah, here's another one that really gets us $3.4 billion in damages due to financial scams. That was in 2024 alone. Who essay? Billion with a
B. That's grandparents, that's retirees, that's vulnerable, vulnerable people being targeted, taking advantage of. And in almost every case, there were red flags. There were warning signs. There were moments where something felt. But what happened was they overwrote them. They were overridden exactly. And there's the anxiety 42.5 million adults in the US are dealing with anxiety disorders. That's roughly one in five walking around in a constant state. Yeah, of nervous system, anxiety, dysregulation. Yeah. And you know, here's what connects all these stats. At some point, you got to ask, is this really bad luck? Is it really just random misfortune happening to millions? Or is it something being systematically missed? It's being missed. Yeah, it is. And not just missed. It's being ignored. Absolutely ignored, right? Because before every one of those outcomes, there was a moment, a signal, a hesitation. Something didn't feel right. Something didn't sit right. Think about medical
misdiagnosis. In most cases, the patient felt it wasn't right. Something was wrong. They knew their body. They knew their body. They knew something was off. But when they went to the doctor, the doctor said, Oh, you're fine. It's just stress. It's just aging. It's nothing to worry about. Wow. What? What did they do? They overrode their own knowing. They trusted the expert over their own body. And months later, when the real diagnosis comes, when the cancer has spread, when the condition has progressed, they say, I wish I'd pushed harder. I knew. I knew it. I knew something was wrong. And you did more than no. You were shown your body was screaming. You just didn't trust it over someone else's assessment. Yeah. You knew, you knew, you knew. It's called knowing this, the ancient way of knowing. And we're all worn. And this is happening in every domain, relationships. People ignore red flags because they don't want to seem judgmental. They don't want to be that person who's paranoid or difficult. So they give the benefit of the doubt to the dumb
heads. They rationalize away the inconsistencies, explain away the lies. 81% of dating profiles contained lives. That means if you're dating online, the default assumption should be this person is not being fully honest. But what do people do? What do they do? They take everything at face value. They believe what they want to believe. Then six months later, six months in the truth comes out. And then they're shocked. Oh, same pattern with hiring decisions, 74% of people hire the wrong person. And in almost every case, there was a moment in the interview where something felt off a reference that was vague and the answer that didn't add up. But the hiring manager needed to fill that position so bad they were under such pressure. The resume looked good. They ignored the hesitation and made the hire. And then three months later, yep. You're dealing with performance issues, culture problems, or worse career decisions. Same thing, 47% make the wrong choice. And they almost always knew it felt wrong. They knew they felt it in
their gut when they accepted the job offer. Something about the company culture, manager's communication style. Maybe the way they were treated in the interview process, it didn't feel right, didn't sit right, but the money was good. Or the title impressive. So maybe they've already quit their last job so they move forward anyway. And now they're stuck in a position that's draining them, misaligned with their values, going absolutely nowhere. Financial scams targeting, you know, the vulnerable. This one is particularly painful because in every single case, the victim had a moment, had a moment where they thought this seems too good to be true, too good to be true. A moment where something about the caller's urgency or the deal's pressure didn't feel right. They were lonely. They were trusting. They didn't want to seem paranoid. You know, so they gave their information out. They wired the money. They signed the documents. Right. And then Poo, it's gone. How about anxiety disorders? 42.5 million people. You know what anxiety is that it's core.
It's your nervous system trying to get your attention, wake up. It's your body saying, hey, something's not right in the environment. Something's out of alignment. Something is not safe, maybe. But instead of listening to it, people try to shut it down. They take medication, suppress it. They distract themselves. Tell themselves are being, oh, I'm irrational. Maybe anxiety will go away. It gets worse, actually, because the signal is still firing and it's still being ignored. You know, let's talk about what's actually happening in those moments. The moment before the bad decision, the moment before misdiagnosis is accepted, the moment before the wrong hire was made, the moment before you say yes to something your gut is screaming, no, about what's happening in that moment is an override. You know, your nervous system sends a signal, the body registers the threat, the misalignment, the incongruence, it fires a warning, then the prefrontal cortex steps in. And what does it do? It talks you out. And it uses very specific scripts.
Oh, I'm overthinking. It's probably nothing. Don't worry about it. I don't want to assume the worst. Everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. I'm being too sensitive. I need to give them another chance. These all sound reasonably sound mature. Oh, they're mind it. But what you actually are doing is rationalize it. They're your brain trying to explain away what your body already is telling you what it already knows. Yeah, all the time. And here's why it's so dangerous, y'all. Your prefrontal cortex, the thinking, the reasoning part, it operates slowly. It needs time to gather data, analyze patterns, construct logical, construct logical arguments. It's methodical. It's deliberate. Your nervous system operates in milliseconds. It's reading micro expressions, vocal tone shifts, energy patterns, environmental cues, all beneath your conscious awareness. And when it detects a threat, it doesn't wait for your conscious mind to catch up. It fires immediately. So you get this disconnect. Your body is saying danger, danger wrong. Get out. Your
brain is saying, wait, let's think about this. What evidence do we have? What proof can we point to? And by the time your brain finishes analyzing, you've already overridden the signal and committed to the decision. You've hired the person. You've entered the relationship. You've accepted the diagnosis from the doctor. You've wired the money and it's gone. Wow. It's overwhelming, really. You know, and this is where the statistics, the stats start to make sense. 12 million misdiagnosed, 81% lying on dating profiles, 74% wrong hires. These aren't random. These are predictable, predictable outcomes of millions of people daily, overriding their gut in favor of their brain. Wow. Let me give you a real example. We had a client, successful business owner, intelligent guy who was interviewing candidates for CEO position high level higher critical role. He narrows it down to two candidates. Canada has, it has an impeccable resume, MBA from a top
school experience at major companies says all the right things in the interview checks every box on the paper. Canada has a solid less impressive resume, good experience, good references, but not quite as polished as a. So what happens? Well, in that interview with candidate A, our client felt something off. Couldn't put a finger on it. Nothing he could point to specifically, but just a feeling. A feeling something was not quite right. The answers were too perfect. The confidence felt performative. Something about that eye contact was even off. But on paper, candidate A was clearly the better choice. So he ignored the feeling. He hired candidate A and within six months he discovered the candidate A had been inflating revenue projections, hiding operational issues from the board and positioning himself to take credit for other people's work. Oh, it was a mess. He had to let him go. It caused the company hundreds of thousands of dollars. It damaged relationships with the investors. And when we talked to him
afterward, he said, damn it. I knew it. I knew it. In the first interview, I knew something was wrong, something's off. But I talked myself out of it and rationalized. Oh my gosh. You know, that was a disturbing day for sure. And you know, that's the override and it's costing people everything. Some people listening might be thinking, okay, but what if I'm wrong? What if I trust my gut and it leads me astray? What if I pass on a good opportunity and a relationship because of the feeling and it turns out to be nothing? And here's the answer to that. What's the actual cost of being wrong? If you trust your gut and it turns out you're being overly cautious, what's the worst that happens? You don't hire someone who might have been fine. You don't date someone that might have worked out. You don't accept a diagnosis that might have been accurate. But here it is. If you override your gut and you're wrong, which statistics show happens all the time, the majority of the time, the cost is massive. Years of your life, hundreds of thousands of dollars, your health, your safety, your
peace of mind. So the math is not even close. No, no, no. It's not even in the same universe. Trusting your gut and being wrong costs you a missed opportunity overriding your gut and being wrong costs you everything. Big difference. Huge. You know, plus it's an experiment. That way you get to really fine tune your skills and know how you operate personally. You know, so why do people keep making the mistake? You know, why do they keep overriding the signal when the stakes are high because they've been trained to? From childhood, childhood, we are taught to ignore our gut in favor of external authority. Don't be rude. Say hello to the stranger. Give them a hug even if you don't want to. The doctor knows best. Respect your elders. We're socialized to priority. Prioritize other people's comfort over our own safety to prioritize social harmony over internal knowingness to prioritize being nice over being protected. And this is especially true for women.
Women are taught from birth to be accommodating. Don't hurt anyone's feelings. Give people the benefit of the doubt and not be difficult or paranoid or dramatic. Uh, I know. It's just all the cliches. You know, so when a woman feels uncomfortable on a date, but the guy seems nice. What does she do? She ignores the discomfort. She doesn't want to seem rude. She doesn't want to overreact. Then later, oh, oh, when the situation escalates, she blames herself for not seeing it coming. But she saw it. She did see it. She felt it. She just entrusted over her socialization to be polite. So men get a different version of this programming. Same, same. Really. Men are taught to be logical, rational, unemotional, to not trust feelings because feelings are weak to make decision based on data and strategy and reason. So when a man feels uneasy about a business deal, but the numbers look good, what does he do? He ignores the uneasy feeling. He trusts the spreadsheets over his gut. And then when the partnership implodes, he gets blindsided once again blindsided. Wow.
You know, but here's what people don't understand. Your gut is not emotional, okay? It's not being irrational. It's reading data that your conscious mind does not have access to. That's all. It's that simple. Micro expressions that last less than a second, vocal tone shifts that your ears register, but your brain doesn't consciously process energy patterns, body language cues, environmental signals, all of it is being processed by your nervous system in real time. And when your nervous system detects a pattern that matches a past threat, maybe a past negative outcome, it fires a warning. And that warning shows up as the feeling of sensation instinct. It's not random. It's not mystical. It's a pattern recognition operating at a speed. Your conscious mind doesn't recognize. Doesn't match. Doesn't know. Yeah. Can't match. You know, we're taught not to trust it. We're taught to wait for proof to need a logical reason to justify our decisions, you know, to other people. And by the time you have proof, it's too late, man. You're already in the relationship.
You're already in the job. You're already dealing with the diagnosis. You already locked into the decision, dealing with the bullshit. This is why the stats are what they are. 12 million diagnosis, billions in scam lots of 74% of wrong hires. These aren't fluks. These are predictable outcomes of a society that trains people to ignore their most reliable guidance system. And the people, the people who exploit this, predators, manipulators, con artists, they know it. They rely on it. They absolutely know it. And they know that most people will override their gut to avoid seeming rude. So they create social pressure. They make you feel paranoid for questioning them. They make you feel guilty for not trusting them. And it works. It works incredibly well because most people would rather be taken advantage of rather than being risked as difficult. Oh, wow. I'm not difficult. No, you know what? Please be difficult. Please be difficult.
You know, let's talk about what this actually costs. Not just financially, although the cost is staggering $3.4 billion from scams alone. Medical misdiagnosis costs, the healthcare system, billions more, wrong hires, cost companies, hundreds of thousands per mistake. The real cost isn't even financial, you know? It's the years of your life that you lose. The relationships that drain you, the health conditions that progress, that progress, because they weren't caught early. The chronic stress of being in situations, your nervous system knows our wrong. And that stress that disconnect between your brain and telling you and what your body is experiencing, that's what creates anxiety. That's the epidemic. 42 and a half million people dealing with anxiety disorders. That's not the chemical imbalance. That's not a mental illness. That's your body trying to get your goddamn attention. Your nervous system is screening. We're not safe. This relationship's wrong. The job is killing us. The situation is dangerous. And you keep telling it to shut up.
You keep meditating it. You keep ignoring it. You know, and it doesn't go away. It escalates. Because the signal, the signal is still firing and it's still being overridden. So, so your body turns up the volume, panic attacks, increase, insomnia, digestive issues, chronic pain, autoimmune, all of it is your body trying to force you to pay attention, trying to get you to stop ignoring, ignoring the signal. There's a people need to understand every day of decision you've made, every relationship that went wrong, every situation you said, I didn't see it coming. You did. You saw it coming. You felt it. You knew it. You just didn't trust it. You overwrote it. You talked to yourself out of it and you paid a very big price. Huge, huge, you know, in the locker, the longer you do this, the weaker the signal gets. Because every time you override, override it, you know, you teach yourself not to trust it. You weaken that connection. You condition yourself to ignore the very system that's designed to keep you safe.
Until eventually you can't hear it at all. And that's when people say, I don't even know what I feel anymore. I can't trust myself. I don't know how to make decisions, but you didn't lose the signal. You just trained yourself not to listen to it. No, no. So, you know, what's the solution? How do you break this pattern? You stop overriding. You stop waiting for proof. You stop needing a logical explanation for what you feel. So really you start recognizing your body is giving you the data. Real, measurable, physiological data. It's not in a format. Your conscious mind recognizes it comes as sensations, maybe tightness in the chest, not in stomach, restlessness. Maybe an urge to leave a feeling that something's wrong, something's off. It's not right. Nope. And that's the signal. And when you learn to recognize it, you know, when you learn to trust it, everything changes. You don't hire the wrong person. You don't enter that wrong relationship. You don't ignore the health symptoms. You don't fall for the scam. And because you're no longer waiting for external proof,
you have internal knowingness. You know, you know, you know. And that knowing is more accurate than any resume, any dating profile, any doctor's assessment, any sales pitch. It's based on millions of years of evolutionary survival machinery. It's based on pattern recognition that operates way faster than thought. It's based on data. Your conscious mind doesn't even know it's receiving. And that's the people who trust this. They don't show up in the statistics. They're not part of the 74% who hire the wrong person, the 81% being lying to and believing it. They're not part of the 12 million this diagnosis that get their butt kicked. All right. No, you know, they catch you before it becomes a problem. They see it before it unfolds. They trust the preview instead of waiting for the disaster. And that's the difference between people who get blindsided and people who navigate life with precision. Yeah. Big difference. Huge. Life does not blindside you. It shows you first every
single time. So the real question is, are you paying attention? Are you awake? Are you in the moment? Are you trusting what you're being shown? Or are you overriding it and adding yourself to the steps somebody who just got blindsided? Yeah. Hey, trust your gut. Save your ass.
