WA Family Violence Crisis: Gaps in Support

0:00On March 19th, here's the latest out of Sydney. A new report in Western Australia shows big problems in how agencies handle high-risk family and domestic violence cases. It looked at 388 families who got help in November, 2024. More than half were at serious risk of harm, but only 2.5% got multi-agency support. Family and domestic violence offenses keep climbing there. Police chased 20% more suspects this year compared to last. The Australian Bureau's statistics counted over 11,900 offenders, with men making up nearly 80%. Assaults from these cases have more than doubled in the last 10 years. The state Umbudsman says these gaps leave victims, especially women, facing extra danger because the system isn't delivering the help they need. Experts from women's safety groups call it alarming. Warning at cost lives and stressing the fear, women and kids live with daily. Their review found kids were involved in 40% of cases, but many lacked tailored support.
