Victoria's plan to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games got scrapped back in 2023 over massive cost overruns, jumping from two. Billion $600 million to around $6 billion. Regional spots like Jalong, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Gipsland were counting on lasting perks such as upgraded sports venues and affordable homes. The state government stepped up with a $2 billion fund to push those projects forward anyway out of 17 sports upgrades promised. Three are finished and 13 are in progress, including new shooting ranges and more well gun club, and Balls facilities in Bendigo. Local folks have mixed emotions about it all. Club leaders appreciate the shiny new gear that strengthens their setups and draws more players, but they're bummed about missing the huge spotlight.
