Vegetarian Couple Charged in Daughter's Death

0:00On March 23rd, a vegetarian couple in their mid-30s faces murder charges for allegedly starving their three-year-old daughter to death on a diet, mainly a butter, lentils, and yogurt. Manpreet Jatana, 34, and Jaskirit Singh Uppel, 36, both of Indian heritage, are accused in the death of little Penelope Chandel. Penelope's body turned up at the family home in Hayes, West London, on December 17, 2023, after her mother contacted a funeral. Medical experts determined the cause was severe malnutrition, along with ketoacidosis. The parents showed up via video link from separate prisons, wearing large blue turvins, and pleaded not guilty to murder, as well as lesser charges of, manslaughter and child cruelty. Prosecutors painted a picture of an isolated family cut off from relatives in the outside world, with neither parent working for a long time, and relying on their restrictive vegetarian diet.
