All right, class settle down. Today's lesson is on the ARCO Rewards app. Try to stay with me. The fundamentals are simple. Earn at least five cents a gallon in rewards, then redeem them later for up to a dollar off every gallon. Now, here's where it gets complicated. Oh, wait! It doesn't! It's as simple as downloading the ARCO Rewards app to get started! Class dismissed! The savings of up to $1 dollar for the gallon are being able to win rewards dollars in the lower of the account at participating locations, terms and conditions apply. Hey, from CNN, I'm a FOMA DK, with the five things you need to know for Thursday, September 3rd. Vice President JD Vance hosted the first White House briefing in more than 40 days. He touched on a number of topics like gas prices. The reason gas prices are so high right now is because the Iranians are shooting at commercial shipping. Gas, frankly, could have been much, much higher or were it not for our efforts. But I'm not going to make a promise about when it's going to return to $3.
Vance also told CNN's Caitlin Collins that he wouldn't call the conflict with Iran a war. Even as he acknowledged he didn't know when the fighting would end. Right now, there is no active shooting. I recognize there have been places where this is flared up. When you ask, when will this end? You're asking me a question, like, when will the Iranians stop shooting at ships? I think the reality is, I don't know the answer to that question. You'd have to ask the Iranians. The VP said he's not concerned that some Republican candidates are not planning to attend the GOP midterm convention in Dallas next week. He also defended President Donald Trump's supportive AI data centers while acknowledging they've generated some political backlash. An immigration and customs enforcement agent has been federally charged with lying about the events leading up to the day he shot a Venezuelan immigrant in the leg earlier this year. That's according to multiple people familiar with the matter. Charges against Christian Castro are not yet available to the public, but a person familiar with the matter told CNN that he's facing several counts
of making false statements. This is the first time the Justice Department has charged an officer for conduct that happened on duty during the immigration crackdown nationwide. CNN attempted to reach a lawyer for Castro for comment. Minnesota prosecutors alleged the shooting happened after ICE agents tried to pull over a truck that belonged to an undocumented immigrant. Prosecutors say 24-year-old Julio Cesar Sosa-Celice was shot in the back of the leg through the closed door of his apartment after his cousin who was driving the truck got out and was tackled by an ICE agent. He broke free and ran inside the apartment where his cousin Sosa-Celice was standing. Sosa-Celice says he was shot as he shut the door and was trying to lock it. Federal prosecutors had initially charged Sosa-Celice in his cousin with a tacking-and-ice officer with a snow shovel and a broomstick. But those charges were dropped after investigators reviewed surveillance video and other material from the incident that conflicted with Castro's account. A federal judge has blocked President Trump's latest attempt to limit birthright citizenship.
Trump issued an executive order last month that said federal agents wouldn't recognize the citizenship of children whose parents are not citizens. If either parent is, quote, an alien enemy, a foreign government employee, or engaged in so-called birth tourism. The judge said that administration couldn't enforce the new, more limited policy, but is allowing the agencies to continue to work on guidance on how they would carry it out. In the opinion accompanying the preliminary injunction, the judge wrote that the new policy was likely unconstitutional under the Supreme Court ruling this summer, striking down Trump's earlier attempt to end birthright citizenship. The White House slammed her order as, quote, just another ruling from an activist judge. Attorney General Todd Blanch set on Fox News yesterday that the executive order was crafted with an understanding of the Supreme Court's decision. We didn't expect this judge to say we were right, and so this is not something that is a surprise to us. If we have to go back to the Supreme Court, we will. Coming up, Fresh Pressure on Home Buyers.
Home shoppers and homeowners hoping to refinance are not going to want to hear this, but mortgage rates hit a new high this year. According to Freddie Mac, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 6.71%, the highest level since July 2025. CNN Samantha DeLuea tracks the housing market. Samantha, I know this has something to do with bonds, but that's about it. That's right, Afoma. This move is in fact related to the bond market. Here's the connection. Mortgage rates are closely tied to the 10-year Treasury yield, and that yield tends to move based on investors' expectations for inflation and the economy. Lately, investors have been signaling more concern about the economy due to the war in Iran, higher energy costs, and a ballooning national debt. That's helped fuel a sell-off across the global bond market. That may not be welcome news for home shoppers and those looking to refinance
their existing mortgages, because when bond sell-off yields rise, which can push up borrowing costs across the entire economy. In fact, the bond markets moves recently may also make auto loans and other types of borrowing more expensive in the future. In video has angst a nearly 13 billion dollar deal to buy AI startup hugging face. The startup has been in the spotlight recently after being hacked by OpenAI models that went rogue during a testing incident. CNN's Claire Duffy is with us, so Claire, this is interesting, considering that hugging face turned down in video's previous deal last year. Yes, this deal marks a big jump in hugging face's valuation. The company turned down an investment from Nvidia last year that would have valued it at $7 billion because hugging face reportedly wanted to stay independent. What's changed here is that hugging face has found itself at the center of a growing debate in Silicon Valley and in Washington between open source and closed source AI. Hugging face is a platform for people to host and access open source AI models. These are the
models that anyone can download and customize versus the closed models like chat to PT and Claude that have more restrictions on how they can be used. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and others have spoken in support of open source AI saying it will improve AI safety and increase the speed of innovation. So hugging face and Nvidia looking with this deal to try to increase access to and use of open source AI and of course for Nvidia being the leading chip maker, the more people using AI, the more its products are in demand. That as a for us, we're back tomorrow morning. All right everyone welcome to our go rewards orientation. I'm Hannah. Whoa is everything okay? That's a code green. Someone just earned at least five cents a gallon in rewards. Wow. Another one. Well that one's a code gold. The customer just redeemed savings of up to a dollar gallon. Impressive.
