About this episode
It's easy to give good advice to someone else.
We tell them to be patient.
We tell them not to overreact.
We tell them to set boundaries.
We tell them that one mistake doesn't define them.
Then our own situation changes—and suddenly we find reasons why the rules should be different.
Use the Same Sentence When It Is Yours explores the value of applying the wisdom we readily offer other people to our own lives.
If you would tell a friend to slow down before making an emotional decision, give yourself the same advice.
If you would tell someone else that they deserve better treatment, don't accept less for yourself.
If you would encourage someone to forgive a mistake and learn from it, don't demand perfection from yourself.
Consistency isn't about treating every situation identically.
Context matters.
But your core principles shouldn't disappear simply because you're the person affected by the problem.
Sometimes the clearest test of your values is what happens when following them becomes inconvenient.
It's easy to believe in patience when you're waiting for someone else.
It's harder when you're the one waiting.
It's easy to recommend boundaries when you're watching someone else's relationship.
It's harder when setting the boundary might disappoint someone you care about.
It's easy to tell someone not to let fear make their decisions.
It's harder when the fear belongs to you.
So listen to the advice you give.
Sometimes you've already said exactly what you need to hear.
You don't need a new philosophy every time the problem becomes personal.
Use the same standard.
Use the same compassion.
Use the same honesty.
If the sentence is good enough for someone you love, ask whether it might also be true for you.
Use the Same Sentence When It Is Yours.
