US Paralympians: No Funding, Big Achievements

0:00In Birmingham, it's March 19th, and here's what is going on. Team USA Paralympians just crushed it at the Milan Cortina Games in early March, grabbing 24 medals including 13 golds and finishing. Second overall in the world. Now eyes are on the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics, where three national teams based in Birmingham will compete. The Lakeshore Foundation has been their training home for years, hosting USA Wheelchair Rugby since 2003. Bocha United States since, 2021, and USA Paralympic Powerlifting since last year. These programs trace back decades at Lakeshore, which became an official US Olympic and Paralympic training site in 2003. Wheelchair Rugby boasts the most Paralympic medals in US history. Boxcha has exploded to over 50 countries, and Paralympic Powerlifting is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide. But here's the tough part. Unlike other nations, US Paralympic athletes get no federal funding, so they cover all training, travel, and competition.
