US Open Day 3 - Top seed Zverev survives, barely

Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts convene to discuss a rain-affected day at the US Open which ended with top seed Alexander Zverev coming within two points of defeat before eventually winning at 1:55am.

Part one - Men. We react to Zverev’s win over Lorenzo Sonego, including the dazzling tennis played at times by the Italian, the lateness of it all, and whether Zverev has played himself into form or not. Elsewhere, we cover Flavio Cobolli’s first ever comeback from two sets down and a win for the incomparable Gael Monfils on his 40th birthday. 

Part two (28:51) - We discuss Coco Gauff’s first round victory over Zeynep Sonmez and how it revealed the tough viewing experience for tennis fans inside the Arthur Ashe stadium at night. Plus, a nervy opening win for Madison Keys, a better-than-expected performance from Elena Rybakina, a strong start for Alexandra Eala, and a big win for Yulia Putintseva over Belinda Bencic in a match where Bencic was fortunate not to be defaulted. 

Part three (53:54) - A look ahead to Wednesday’s order of play which still has some first round matches left to finish, as well as Jessica Pegula and Ben Shelton with potentially tricky matches on Ashe.
