2:54Today is the second of September and we are here to catch up on the US Open day three at tennis weekly H.U. And we have had yet another dramatic late night end at the US Open. Alexander is very surviving by the skin of his teeth against Lorenzo Sonnego in five sets will be getting into that. Alexander E.Ala also had her first match in New York. So we'll be talking about that easy wins as well for Taylor Fritz. We had a caboli come back from two sets down and we also learned Serena and Venus's doubles opponents, including Maya joint who sent her out of the singles in the women's at Wimbledon. So yes, indeed lots to talk about and Kim for the first time. We have had some rain this tournament and it has caused some havoc with the schedule. We actually still have some round one matches that need to be complete going into what is

3:54it the fourth day of the tournament. I know we've got either Yovic still to finish but Dossa who is a game away. That must be so incredibly frustrating a game away. It could all change in its head. No, maybe because of Keena will use this break as a way to come back. But Frann Jones, Britain's Frann Jones is a set up over Goatnet, one of your faves Joel. So yeah, do check if you're watching on day four, whether it's around one or around two because there are a few outliers in there still because of the rain. Genuinely it's a nightmare. I think there's, I know it's always going to be a perennial question for listeners and fans on, do you like the three day format for round one at a grand slam that starts on the Sunday? And I think if you looked at this schedule and you saw the fact that we're having round one matches on the fourth day of competition, I think this is something that is really

4:54frustrating, I think, with how round one works because these players are going to be put at a big disadvantage and didn't necessarily need to be like this. But very easily could have got all these matches I think done in two days, given we have better conditions and they maybe could have four classes a bit better. So yeah, it's a bit frustrating, I think, that we're in this situation. I just hope he doesn't put these players at too big of a disadvantage. Yeah, and I'm not sure if the ongoing forecast, so maybe the tournament organised is new. No, a lot of the we don't and they're confident that it won't continue. But yeah, let's hope those players get their matches done efficiently today so they don't feel too behind those that go through. I mean, let's catch up on the night session, though, Joel. We had Coco Gough coming through. Didn't have it all her own way, but she did get a solid straightsets win over Zane at Sonmez in the opening round three and four. I mean, yeah, struggled a little bit.

5:57There's a lengthy match in the opening set and then Sonmez, you thought at one point she might be coming back, one three games in the draw in the second, but Gough doing very well to kind of stamp her out and come through. Were you sort of impressed with what we saw from Coco Gough, her run of form continuing? Sonmez is a very tricky round one opponent. It's still actually the way both of them played. It didn't necessarily feel like a round one match. Sonmez also just peeking out of nowhere, felt in the second set. As you mentioned, Coco Gough did really well to win this in straight sets. I think this very easily could have been an unnecessary three set journey for her. I think it's testament to how well her serve is working, her temperament on the court as well. She didn't panic when Sonmez was sort of playing very, very well. I would say earlier on in that second set.

7:00It's almost a different situation, I think, to like a really sabilecka. I would have been fascinated to see what would have happened to sabilecka with a peeking opponent. But Coco Gough just kept cool, kept focus. She came through in straights. Good victory for her. Definitely can raise it a few years, but she can't be too dishappy with her work on the court against a very dangerous Sonmez and Round 1. Absolutely. Another female player that all the eyes of the world seem to be on at the moment, Alex Ayala, she also came through over the night session out on Louis Armstrong. Straight sets, it was 6162 over American Qualifier, Mary Stoyon. Quite an emphatic opening round victory for Ayala under the light of New York City. Was she living up to the billing that she's now sort of been given, Joel, do you think? Yeah, I was very impressed with this performance, particularly on serve actually,

8:06because she defended her serve really well. And I think a lot has been made of her serve and the serve speeds. I was watching this match and thinking, she's got great change up between her first serve and the second serve in terms of the pace that she can play with and the pace that she doesn't necessarily have to play with. And her serve still be a threat. So I think that was kind of interesting to see. I still think that the ultimate game is probably to add some more pace. And I think that is what Uncle Tony is perhaps helping on. But yeah, I thought it was a very impressive win from her. The also the fact that she defended break points really well. I mean, her opponent, Stoyona, was 0 for 6 on break points. So she played the big points really well. So she kept very composed. And I think that was also part of the reason for her victory, because Louis Armstrong night session,

9:09packed crowd, noisy crowd, which she spoke about afterwards, not always the easiest environment to say composed in, particularly when all the spotlight is on you, surging ticket prices as well. That must have an impact. That must have a pressure. So to kind of handle all of that as well, I think it was a very good day at the office for Yala. Yeah, I almost hope she's not aware that the ticket prices are massively surging for her, because apparently they have surged 134% for her match. I guess once the schedule was announced. So if you want to see her again, now before they go, I'll be even higher, I guess. I mean, she's got a Alexandra O'Neill, Nicky of her in round two, who's a bit of an unorthodox player. Do you think she'll cause her some trouble perhaps? Well, she's already caused her some trouble this season, defeated her in Stradsburg. Earlier on in the year. So that will be an interesting one. And I assume she's going to get another big court assignment.

10:11And I do think that at the moment is it helps her. Again, I'm just so amazed with how she's just able to kind of take all of this in and not let it kind of impact her tennis. She's being playing great on the hard courts of late. So yeah, I think that would be a tricky one. But I certainly think that she can use the crowd to her advantage. She's playing players who won't be used to these crowds, these moments, the atmosphere. And I think with each match that she has, she's just, I think, getting into a place where she can actually use this to her advantage. So yeah, it's kind of, you know, E.R. Lemania is here to stay. I hope it does continue. I still hope that we get E.R. Yovic in round three, because I genuinely could see that as an Arthur Ash night session match. And yeah, that would be fantastic.

11:13But yeah, one certainly still one step at a time. Yeah, I don't think that'll be first on, you know, Grandstand will it? But let's see if that happened. I mean, he was two points from defeat at the hands of Lorenzo Sonnego. It feels like he's finished his match really. We finished at 155 in the morning. It's the great odds, isn't it? The dreaded... I mean, I sort of fear for Alchrist. It's the dreaded men's night slot, last on Ash, which it's just like... Yeah, it's just a worry, isn't it, in terms of the... I mean, to be honest, any match in that last session, sorry, the last slot on Ash is up to... Is vulnerable to a late finish. We saw that with Venus Williams versus Kennin. Yeah, now we've seen it with Zeraf as well. I mean, I'm all up for that when, you know, it's at the Australian Open.

13:18It's the other side of the world. We're in our day to... Kim, this is what... It's sort of weird because I know it's late. I know it doesn't make sense. But also, I'm like, this is what makes the US open. This is what makes it so exciting. We don't have these situations, these circumstances happen at all the Grand Slams. And, you know, I've been there, I've been there on these courts going super late. And there is an energy there. And I certainly think this match delivered as well. I don't think this was like Venus and Kennin, you know, struggling to find a victor. This was just... It was decent stuff. Decent stuff. Two good players playing great tennis at the same time. And I think at the end of this tournament, we'll be looking back certainly with this match being one of... If not the match of the tournament, I think. Well, it's at a high bar early on. Some naughty, nocturnal tennis, perhaps. I mean, it's very... Yeah, he was two points away from losing Fairfait Sona Go

14:20through everything at him. And it would have been pretty embarrassing for Sona Go. So maybe I've lost as the first top seed on the men's side to lose in the first round of a slam since late in the U.S. in Wimbledon 2003. It was looking on the cards. And I think I think I should sort of hint it. This could be the case. I mean, Sona Go... You did? He's not been in the greatest form this season. Yeah, he's always a tricky customer on his day. I think it's very... As I say, I think he will be happy with the fact that he was playing a good opponent. I don't necessarily think he was playing bad. You know, he was struggling. I think he did well to dispatch an opponent who was playing very well. He created lots of break-point opportunities. I think it was a case that Sona Go was taking his chances more than Sverive was. You know, it was very pivotal as well in that third set in the tie break.

15:21The fact that he came down from two sets to one, I think, will give him a lot of confidence. And that's certainly, I think, something he needs at the moment. He's not had the greatest form of late. And I genuinely think this is almost like the best thing that could have happened to Sverive. You know, winning in five sets against a tough opponent, playing good tennis from two sets to one down. I think that could kickstart his campaign. And maybe get him back to the levels he was playing at at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. I do think in a weird way, him as a best of five set prospect is a much different prospect to him in best of three. I think, given the format and the added time it allows, it inevitably lets, I think, Zoeve find his feet a little bit more versus best of three where, I say, we've seen more recently because of it being more compact. I think it affects his play a bit more.

16:22Well, to quote Sverive, he said that it was exactly the kind of match that he needed. So I think, yeah, I said this last time, all was well that ends up. He got the job done. He won through. Maybe he's, it's helped him find that kind of major inform that he needed to progress through. So we'll see how he gets on in his next match. One player I'm delighted that we will see more of Joel is Goemon Feast. And his final USA pin, he was up against the Leihau. And he came back from a set down to win to reach through to the second round. I mean, he bagled the Leihau. He bagled, yeah, bagled the Leihau in the fourth set. I mean, it was, yeah, lots of firsts that pretty comfortable. I thought, oh dear, where are we going here? But really turned it around. One, two and love in the last three sets. What a fantastic victory on his birthday as well. Turned 40. So that's pretty, pretty cool going for your birthday. And he's got Learner team next. So I'm hoping that will also be a night time affair. And I hope we get some more classic one, Feast as well.

17:24I hate the run and can continue somehow. I know, Goemon Feast loves to, I almost feel like he loves to lull the crowd into a full sense of security just to kind of bring the entertainment, bring the popcorn. But if I'm being honest, those, though, that sets two sets, three sets, four. That was one of the best tennis I think he's played this year. It was absolutely clinical. It came absolutely out of nowhere. And yeah, I was, I was very impressed if a little bit surprised. I mean, the fact that he's still doing this at 40 years old. Yeah, is very, very good, particularly, you know, particularly at the net. I thought he was, he was very decent. I think he covered his second serve as well. A lot better than than the layho did. And he generated a lot more break points as well. 19 in total. So, you know, his return game was on court as well. It was, was sound as well. And he kept that unforeseen account down somewhat after that first set.

18:28So yeah, good performance from Monfice does give me a bit of confidence that maybe he could go on a little bit of a run. But yeah, learner 10 next, that is going to be a tough one. But I think it's, it's a 40 year old versus a 20 year old. It's like playing someone, well, it's, yeah, playing someone half your age. That's not, yeah, it's not going to be easy. But at least we're going to get Monfice at least one more match. And some more points probably for the highlight reel. Absolutely. Well, he's now in the 40 club and two, two people who are well into their 40s. Venus and Serena Williams, we, we know who they will be up against in the women's doubles because the draw has now been made. They have Chan Halging and Maya joint. So Serena up against Maya joint again. Obviously that was a big match at Wyden. Do you think Maya joint would be thinking, oh, no, not again. Or do you think she'll see really be like, what, what a thrill I'm going to have to face.

19:30I did not think the, um, the Serena Williams comeback would be so entwined with Maya joint career. Maya joint career, Maya joint law. But yeah, very interesting one. There are the 14th seeds. I think there would be huge motivation from Maya joint site to say that I've defeated a returning Serena Williams in singles and doubles. But at the same time, I also think there'll be huge motivation from Serena and Venus is side. I think, you know, Venus Williams won't, you know, want to be remembered for that match against Kenan, you know, her singles prowess. I think, you know, from her point of view, I think she will feel like she's got a point to prove and she can prove that on the doubles court with Serena. And I think, you know, Serena won't want to lose to Maya joint again, plain and simple. So I think that could be a very interesting matchup. Oh, I'm trying to think who I would still back. Well, I still lean with the 14th seeds.

20:30I'm still, I'm going to back Serena and Venus actually. But, um, yeah, quite a interesting dynamic when you've played, I think, someone, so recently on the singles court back again on the doubles. I think Serena might just be having her knee holds up this time. So let's see how they get home. But we're taking a quick break now. Do join us in the second half. And it's time now to look back on the day session action from day three at the US Open. Joel, we had on the men's side the two top seeds, I guess, from from this section of the draw,

22:34Taylor Fritz and Flavio Caboli in action. They both won through, but in quite different fashions, Fritz getting the job done in three comfortable sets in Caboli, having to come back from two sets down to win in five. And let's start with with Taylor Fritz. He was up against fellow American Darwin Blanche, who many listeners may not be too familiar with. He's a young, young American named after Charles Darwin, I think. Got quite an interesting backstory, but yeah, Taylor Fritz getting the job done quite easily over fellow American. How did you rate his performance in his opener? Yeah, I thought he looked very sharp, hard to know too much, hard to read too much into that performance, but I think if Taylor Fritz is going to go far in this tournament, he is going to need his big weapons working well for him. And certainly today his first serve was so good. He won 91% of points off of his first serve. And to be honest, I think Taylor Fritz, I mean,

23:40I mean, this is probably going to think I've given the who do on him in my predictions. But I still believe that he is the most complete of the American men. And I think we've seen flawed victories from the other top Americans, Frances Tiafo, Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul, you know, lapsing, concentration, you know, in that first set. So for me, Taylor Fritz showed why, for my point of view, I think he is the top dog in terms of a potential male champion. So out of the opening round matches from the likes of Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafo, maybe Brandon Nakashima, do you think Fritz is looking like the American to beat that the one that's going to stay in the longest, you know, just based on that opening? I think so. And I also think his jaw as well. I think he would have been very happy if he had seen Kabali, you know, go out, which was very, very close to happening. But yeah, I mean, between him, you know, Nakashima did have a good win against buyers. But yeah, I think Fritz is looking very good.

24:43Certainly a very good platform for him to build on. And he's had, you know, he's had great memories here before. So I think he's in a very good position at the moment. Yeah, that sort of lost, you know, to Rante, I think it was in Canada, losing to Nakashima in Cincinnati, like that, you know, that can be put behind him. He's got a bit of practice before the years. I think he might motivate him as well, because, you know, there's been all this talk around potentially. This is like the best chance for an American male champion. It's almost a question of like, well, if that is the case, who's it going to be? And, you know, I do think it has been, as we keep talking about, the summer of Nakashima so far. But I don't think that all matters until you get to the US Open. That's the thing that people are going to remember. And I think Taylor Fritz did have a sticky result against Nakashima in Cincinnati. And I'm actually probably should have won having gone a breakup in that third set. But I think that he, it still put him in a good place for New York. Yeah, it's all about

25:46the slams. No one apart from maybe a path to court still that you're going to be running in a few years time. No one needs to know what happened in Cincinnati, 20s, 20s, 20s, maybe. But yeah, and Darwin launched, we will see more of him, perhaps he's only 18 years of age. And we impressed it all with him. Do you think he's a future prospect or is he just one of the many young Americans out there? He is one of the many young Americans. And I always think that is a bit of a, you know, we just have to be a bit kind of cautious. I certainly think there are aspects of his game that can be weapons in the future. But I think at the moment, he's still very green, still very rough, I think, to you know, the top levels of the tour. You know, his, his first serve was way down. You know, he has a great, great forehand, but didn't necessarily have the, the consistency, I think, to trouble for it's today. But I mean, he's 18 years old. Great experience for him. Yeah, he's certainly got the weapons, but I still think, perhaps a few more years it's going to take, I think, maybe on the

26:51challenger circuit, maybe, maybe back in college, I'm not quite sure. But I think before he, he's ready to be a threat and potentially go further up the rankings, it might be. Yeah. And with this, the day session on Arthur Asher, it finished pretty early, didn't it, because the women's match was done very early. Taylor Fritz was very comfortable, you know, two very straight sets wins. And there was rain, obviously, in the outside courts, they couldn't play for about four hours or so. Some speculations to, oh, well, we've got time to maybe move the women's match onto Arthur Asher before the evening session would begin. Do you think that was a missed opportunity that the organisers decided not to make the most of that sort of empty slot given the weather? I do think so. I think there was an opportunity for them to put an extra match on Asher. If you've got the roof, you're using it, and you've got the time as well. And I do think they did, they did have the time to complete a women's match before the night session. I think it would have

27:56made sense. I think we saw on the TVs that the, because of the rain, actually, there's more people in these roofed arenas on Asher and also on Louis Armstrong. So why not make the most of it? Why not put another America on it? So I was half expecting either Yovic's match against Fritz to be put on there, because it would have been a great opportunity, I think, for them both open up Yovic to a wider audience as well. So I think it was a little bit of a misstep. I can understand why they didn't do it, and the rain obviously did clear off. But I think, yeah, I think there was time, and I think it was a misopportunity to bring another American onto a big court. Yes. Well, when the weather's doing all in summary, the organizers want quick matches, don't they? One player who didn't give that quick a match was Flavio Caboli. He was giving the fans the money. The opposite, yes. Yeah, four hours and 13 minutes, it took him to come back from two sets down to Francisco

28:58Kommissana. This was most notably the first time in his whole career that he's come from two sets down to win. So that's another like ticket in the box for Flavio Caboli. But he does love a fifth set, doesn't he? But he, you know, he's not done it from two sets down before. He loves the fifth set in New York. I was looking at his record. He won twice in five sets here last year. In the first round to another Italian and then to Jensen Brooksby in round two. So, yeah, and I mean, also, I mean, this year as well, I mean, he's had five setters, you know, he had that five setter against Verreve at Roland Garros and then also against catcher Nov at Wimbledon. So I guess it just shows that he can go walk about. He is very good when he is on. But when it's not, it's very ugly. And today, there were times, I mean, I don't think he served well at all through the whole match, but his forehand was so off the large parts of it.

29:59I think he was very fortunate by the end that, you know, he was able to find his forehand. And I think that was the, it was ultimately, I think the shot that won him the match. I do think Comisana dropped the ball somewhat earlier on in the match and he would be very devastated. I think that he couldn't get it done because I don't think Caboli was playing at a level that he would have walked off the court and thought, you know, what I could have won that. I think he would have said to himself fair dues if I'd gone out in round one. So I think Comisana will be disappointed from that point of view. Yeah, perhaps not the performance of a number five seed, but, you know, it's, it's, it's winning ugly. You've got to just get through first. I wonder if he was going to book end his grand slam activity. This season with another round one exit because he lost it. Round one at the Australian Open and it would have been kind of fitting symmetry parallels. And if you'd gone out in round one here, but yeah, he lives to fight another day. Absolutely. And on the women's side in the day session, we had a Lena Rebacchina

31:03up against thea Froden of the states three and two. She won. It's absolutely an hour. Thea Froden. It is. Yeah. She, I think mentioned this on yesterday's podcast briefly that see a Froden starred in King Richard as a, you know, not stunt double, but like bodied tennis playing double. One of the Williams sisters in that film. I think Serena Williams. And that was five years ago when that film came out. So she's she's 18 now. She's made her debut here at the USA Open with a wild card and you know, respectable performance against Rebacchina. Actually kind of kind of about serving her in terms of speed at least. But you know, good experience for her to be up against a top seed. And on Rebacchina's side, you know, her her battles to become the world number one. You know, it's off to a good start. What did you make of her performance, Joel? Yeah, it was an it was an interesting one because you know, the build up to this has been around is Rebacchina even going to take the court. So I was curious to see how she was going to shape up.

32:08And you know, from my point of view, you know, she played she played very well. Didn't see many kind of lasting impact from that injury that she suffered against against Sviontech. And I think she'll just be relieved that nothing reed its head no and no, you know, she was able to get on the court, play her tennis and get off the court without any more drama. So yeah, it's a good, you know, it's a good first step for Rebacchina. We know that she loves a hard court grand slam. I think this is the eight victory in a row for her on hard courts at grand slams. And yeah, perhaps also, you know, you know, they may have been a time when she was like, should I play? Should I not play? And I remember me and Chris talking about, well, you know, she could not play and still be the world number one. But I actually quite like the fact that, you know, she's I think she would want to kind of do it herself, you know, she wants to go out and play the tennis that's going to make her world number one as opposed to being it being handed to her. So perhaps

33:11that was part of her thinking as well. Yeah, I respect that. She's got to be in it to win it, but maybe also, yeah, the angle is fine. And she's, she's, you know, she's, she's here for the fight. So she moves on to the second round. As did Mira Andreva and Madison Pease, they came through in straight sets today as well. Keys was up early against Alina Cornaver, managed to get the win. This time, last year, she lost in the first round to Zara Zua. So I think very relieved to avoid it that fate this time as well. I mean, we know Madison Keys matches our roller coasters. Typically, I'm like, they're, they're three set roller coasters, but this was a, a straight set roller coaster. 10 of the 22 games went against serve. It really was, yeah, it was, unreliable in counselling. Yeah, it was chaos at times, but, uh, I know, final, final person coming over the finish line, just regardless how you get there. But I was intrigued by this matchup,

34:13because I genuinely thought it could have been on, on round one, up set alert, because Cornaver has had some good victories this season. She's had a, you know, she's, she's done well in some of her tour level events. So, um, yeah, I thought this might be a bit of a banana skin. So I think, Madison Keys did well to wrap it up into. I think, Cornaver, she hasn't won a match from a set down in those tour level wins. I think almost all of them, she has, you know, she's won the first set. She's consolidated. So she needs, needs to work on her fighting back qualities, but it's difficult to put it in. You know, Grand Sam Champion, Madison Keys. And one player though, Joel, you'll be pleased to hear came through Maria Sakari, one against Robin Montgomery. The Greek Renaissance continues him. Both her and sits pass through. I mean, yeah, this was a bit of a battle Sakari in three over Montgomery. She's just six to four love down, um, to Montgomery.

35:14And I think did Montgomery win a grass court tournament earlier, earlier this season when Bob or I want to say, Bob or a Craticaver didn't take to the court and you tipped Montgomery to do really well at Wimbledon. She lost in the first round of Paulini. Yes, that's right. That's right. Yeah, she won the libema open. That was it. But yeah, a good, good, very good win for for Sakari. And yeah, very, very promising for the Greeks at the moment. I mean, Sakari did well post Wimbledon in I think Athens also involving Bob or a Craticaver actually in that final. So, you know, she's had a bit of form on the hard courts of late. But yeah, good victory against Montgomery. And yeah, the Greek, the Greek Renaissance, it continues on from Cisapas. Well, if they go deep, I might have to, you know, cook some Greek food and have a bit of a platter while I watch them. Because there's any excuse to eat Greek food and I'm there. But let's have a look at the schedule for day four. The order of play is up in the day session. Joe and on Ash, we've got Pagula and Kenan,

36:21all American affair, followed by Shelton against her catch. That could be quite an interesting encounter. And we've got Medvedev Gorgni and Kostok Stevens out on Louis Armstrong in the day session. I know where Chris will be watching. And the night session, we've got Saba Lenga, followed by Alkaraz on Arthur Ash. Not a surprising lineup with that one. I don't think. And then Armstrong, we've got TFO and Noscow versus the two, you know, Hallmark night matches there. So, yeah, where are your eyes drawn to? What do you think will be match of the day on day four? Oh, that's a tough one. I still think Alkaraz is, I mean, Alkaraz is naturally box office. I think I've got more questions than answers after his round one match against the Foulin. Is the nipple going to be freed again? I think it is. Serious questions. Serious tennis questions. But, um, but to be honest, so in terms of the tennis, I mean, it doesn't get any easier, I think, for Alkaraz. I mean, Faria has been on

37:22some good runs of, of late, you know, in Cincinnati. Had that straight sets win over Shelton. Made the round of 16 and lost to Noscow. So, you know, he could be another dangerous opponent. I think Alkaraz is going to be, you need to be just wary of the threat there. I think that could be difficult. And I also think Ben Shelton needs to be wary of a few, but her catch, particularly how he started in his last match against Halon Grykspur. I think her catch again poses another potential banana skin for him. So, I'm quite curious about that. I'm less worried about JPEG against Kenin. I know you love a bit of Kenin, but sorry, Kim, that match against Venus Williams. It wasn't pretty, was it? It was giving teams very, very, very open final at times. I'm sorry.
